Just the other day, we showed you how easy it is to go from one custom ROM to another using ROM manager. And since then, ROM manager has added almost every major custom ROM out there to its list giving you the opportunity to jump back and forth between them with even more ease. You can also use it to upgrade to the newest version of your particular ROM of choice which is what our video today is based upon. Oh, and we’ve tossed in a little SetCPU session for those still a little confused by its power…
*Warning* – As always, you are performing these tasks at your own risk. We are not recommending that you do ANY of these, but simply providing information to you. There is a chance you could brick your phone, do other permanent damage and this will more than likely void your warranty. Please do as much research as you can beforehand. We are not liable for any of your actions.
*Note 1* – Just a reminder that this process can only be done if your phone is rooted.
*Note 2* – In this video, after clicking “Download ROM,” my phone goes immediately into the installation process because I have already downloaded the ROM. For you, it may take up to 20 minutes for everything to download before you get to the installation process.
*Update 1* – I finally purchased premium ROM Manager and all other ROMs are available with upgrade options. Well worth the $3.99 price.
With another delay announced yesterday by Motorola and the updates to custom ROMs coming in daily, are we sure that this 2.1 update will ever be worth it?

I am still trying to get ROM manager to work, I really want to purchase it to support Koush but if the free version is not working then why would I want to waste my money…
No OTA updates from the market. Is this one of the bugs to expect from CyanogenMod 5.0.5.3?
Runs perfectly….received an update for CyanogenMod 5.0.5.4 but it has a download error through ROM Manager Premium. Is this a problem for anyone else?
Did you update the rom manager proly
I did. Should I reboot?
try it reboot and flash it again and try it again its not gonna hurt anything
are doing it as and upgrade or download rom if ya get an error through upgrade try the download rom one
Thanks
Hey everyone, I have a problem with my ROMs I can't figure out. I can't play or save mms video's sent to me when I use the new roms. I installed the newest version of cyanogen, ultimate droid, and bugless beast and encountered the same problem with all of them. Everything works fine running droidmod but not with any of the roms on rom manager. Any idea's would be appreciated!
I have tried to install CyanogenMod 5.5.5.3 all day, but I keep getting stuck with the screen alternating between the alien eye and the word DROID. I have let it run for about 20 minutes so far and no luck. How long should I let it run? I can recover reboot and restore the backup version of DroidMod 1.0 and I am fine. I just need to know if I am doing something wrong.
Do I need to install CyanogenMod 5.0.5 before installing 5.0.5.3?
I have tried to add CyanogenMod 5.0.5.3 all day to my Motorola Droid. I get all the way to the reboot and it gets stuck alternating between the alien eye and the word DROID. I have let it run for up to 20 minutes on two different occasions. How long should I wait?
Fortunately, I have been able to recovery reboot and go back to DroidMod 1.0 and regain function.
Hello kellex love your site. Rom manager still not working for me or sundawg. Can anyone tell us whats going wrong? I've tried unsuccessfully 3 times to upgrade from droidmod 1.0 to cyanogenMod. Thanks to sundawg, I was able to restore back to a working phone each time using the recovery. Each time I try the upgrade, my droid boots up, but then get caught in a continuous loop between the red eye and droid symbol that can only be stopped with a battery pull. Then I start the phone pushing “X” and the power button to get to the backup and restore. As far as I can see we both have faithfully followed all instructions correctly. Any thoughts?
Thanks, russwolanin
kellex Hey bro I also payed for premium ROM manager.. I am using the newest cyanogen rom and have switched to ulitmate droid once to check it out.. I am having a major issue when i go into the download roms section When i try to download ultimate droid8.1.1 or try to update the rom from 8.0.1 to 8.1.1 it gives me a download error… I also get download error forNexTheme and KangxKxMod what do you think the problem is

Round 2 had the same results :o( what could I be doing wrong? My phone is rooted, I have the DM updater and I downloaded the ROM manager but I have never downloaded the cyanogenmod(i know spelling my be wrong) so do I have to start with the first one and work up to the most updated or can I theoretically (cause I've watched this video over 5 times and tried twice and failed) go to the most updated mod of cyanogen? please help this noob…
BIG SIGH OF RELIEF!!! well I had to remove my battery and pull the power to stop that loop and reboot in recovery mode, messed with the menu and got lucky… Nandroid then restore and after that there was only one file to choose, my phone took about 5 minutes but I go it back to the way it was before I started this mod… ROUND 2 Wish me luck :o)
Thanks sundawg! Read your post and did the same thing and got my phone back to the Droidmod 1.0 where I started before the upgrade. Don't know If I want to try CyanogenMod again given the fact that it looped like that for 4 hours. Whew!
I'm glad my blunders proved helpful, if you do get it working let me know how.
umm I was following the instructions and all was well but when it tries to boot up it goes on this loop from the moto icon, to the droid, then black and repeat. I recently moded my droid to get a rooted with that DM located on one of these posts. I downloaded rom manager and followed the video but something went wrong PLEASE HELP!!! Sundawg102@gmail.com

Kellex, I tried a bunch of different ones, had to uninstall go back to stock. I was having problem with video messages coming through, u-stream, and latitude working. Are you having the same problems? Anyway I just wanted to say that I love your site, keep up all your great work!

Just wanted to say whaaaaat,s up kiiiiiiiid! LIVE IT, LOVE IT, DROID-LIFE!
Like others, much appreciated. I paid for the Premium app, and still, the options are greyed out for the ROMS. I cancelled the order, repurchased, but it's still not showing any difference from the reg and premium edition.
I do not know if this is the problem but I know they do updates all the time. Sometimes when they make those changes it halts the Rom Manager ability to do its thing. I have had this happen before and I just tried it later. You probably have this done but make sure you have the 3rd party apps area checked to accept those non-market apps.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, it's checked.
Has anyone had a problem with the new cyanogenmod where you cannot receive MMS messages correctly. You receive them, video only shows the first frame, and it shows that it continues to play. Is there a fix for this. I have been struggling with this for a while now.
From what I know that has been a problem for cyanogen. I swapped over to Ultimate Droid via rom manager and BlackDroid posted a fix for that for his rom if you would like to switch and check it out.
How has it worked out for you? Do you like that ROM?
I really like both, they are equally useful roms. I personally like Ultimate Droid for a few reasons.
1. MMS was recently fixed and I believe cyanogen still has that problem of not being able to open and play MMS.
2. Using Ulitmat Droid in both gmail and yahoo I can click on links and it will load up whatever browser I have set at default. Last i checked with the cyanogen rom you could only do that in gmail.
3. Ultimate Droid gives you a lot more options as far as what kernel to install as well as different music apps, live wall papers, etc that cyanogen does not.
Both run extremely well and with Rom Manager you can effectively switch back and forth to whatever one you like. If you do a good nandroid back up of both you can restore to either one very easily.
Hope this helps!
It helps tremendously. You have me sold. Only thing I think I remember not liking was the little black robot for the menu but I am sure I can download Helix Launcher 2 to fix that. Again thanks for your quick response.
Not a problem,,,, I forgot to mention that you can go into Rom Manager and go to download rom>Ultimate Droid>Ultimate Droid Customizer and that is where you can load specific apps and settings and it will do it for you. One of the things you can install is either helix launcher or launcher 2. If you do not like the little black droid at the bottom just go into your manage applications settings and clear defaults of whatever launcher you have and then hit the home button and it will give you the option to use lancher 2 if you installed it. That is the laucher without the little droid.
Long story but just giving you the help those on this site gave me, take it easy!
The Helix Launcher was like misery on my phone, with Cyanogen 5.0.5. I'm using GDE which I find amazing. Still mesmerized by the cube rotation with the 7 screens.
i get a error when i try the flash recovery, what am i doing wrong, can someone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same issue, all you have to do is go into your market and update your rom manager then flash it and it will be successful..hope this helps
what am i missing
i keep getting a error message, when i try that flash thing.
What a sweet site. Thanks Kellex. Im trying to decide if I want to do all this. If I am coming from stock how many of your videos would I have to follow? One for rooting, this one and any others? Also any news on meeting up in Portland? I live in Wilsonville and would for sure meet up with some of you guys. Plus Kellex you could devirginize my un-rooted phone..hahah.
What about if Im running a smoked glass-esque theme via metamorph on 5.0.5, will that affect my install if I dont wipe data and cache, I want to upgrade but dont feel like restoring all my widgets and programs with a full data wipe
Awesome, A big thank you for showing us a vid on ROM Manager. Had no idea that it was out there.
What live wallpaper is that, I want it!
Cyanogen nexus
sweet, thanks for the response!
Ah I thought he had one with solid black background, I suppose it just looks darker on the video. Although if anyone knows of one with a solid black background with the Nexus style lines that would be awesome!
Good job bro, digging the upgrade. 5.0.5.3 does seem to running a lil more smoother! Good site no drama and a lot of good videos bro, keep em coming
I agree…great site for everyone ranging from the new to the seasoned. Other boards run off the new people who have legitimate questions and concerns…My fav droid site by far.
any trouble with the update yet?
Cyanogens a really good rom but it tends to lag coming out of applications, or turning it back on from sleep which got annoying. Im running ultimate droid which is a lil smoother and doesnt lag so much
i did the upgrade when it was 5.0.5.3, if theres another could be better
Thanks I'll give it a try…
Hey Kellex, I think you got it backwards on the governor. I think performance makes it so that the processor is always running at the top speed, and on demand makes it so that it goes up only when you need it to. So performance uses more battery. Also a quick tip, i made my sleep profile that its min and max are both at 250 and it helps save battery like crazy.
That actually makes sense…hah thanks for pointing out.
And love the sleep profile. Might have to check that out.
yupp and u might want to get juice defender and ultimate juice
ultimate juice is not free however…yesterday
my battery life was multiplied by 2.2
crazy….and now its only by 1.3 but still
wtf~! i lost the app for the Market. it's nowhere to be found!@~!@~!@!
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here with SetCPU, but my 'max' slider only goes up to 600MHz.
You have to “autodetect” your device.
Never mind. Figured it out. I didn't autodetect when I originally opened the app. Uninstalled, reinstalled, followed your directions. Works like a charm. You're the best, Kellex!
Nope I don't think I'll ever go back to stock, just purchased the premium ROM manager from Koush and it's awesome. Running Ultimate droid 8 its sweet, wanted to check it out. Maybe later I'll try bugless beast or the others Nextheme and KangxKxmod which I never heard of.. More options for me if I stay rooted..
Kellex,
I have read when changing kernals (or ROMS that include a different kernal) it might be a good idea to uncheck “set on boot” on setcpu. I even like to choose autodetect settings again.
damn dude…is there a tutorial you don't do? i honestly gotta say you cover all the bases…big ups to you bro!
Kellex you're awesome! Thanks for your help last night on twitter upgrade worked like a charm! 5.0.5.3 is much smoother for me than 5.0.5
Question: I downloaded rom manager and just installed the newest blackdroid as the instructions said on the blackdroid forum. If I wanna switch to cyanogen is it as easy as going into the rom manager(premium) and downloading it just as Kellex did in that video. Kellex, this site rox. I was a complete newb to rooting as of about a month ago, but after I started coming to this site religously it made it very easy to do. THNX!!! Keep it up.
Yes you should be able to just go into ROM manager, download new Cyanogen and install from there.
Dude your on top of the videos and responses. Thank you very much. Awsome. U da man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you did a nandroid back up of the rom you can just go into the back up area of rom manager and restore that back up of the rom that you like and it should restore it back with all your apps and settings that way you do not have to reload everything.
Hello Kellex,
I erased by mistake my sd card on my droid, now when I turn it on I have the Moto logo but it does not want to boot up anymore. When I go in recovery mode the phone says that the clockworkmod is missing. So, I was wondering if you could help me on how could I put my droid back into the factory setting. I am very upset…..Thank you for your support.
If your pc has an SD reader i'd pull a dump from someone else's card.
Yes, I have a card reader on my pc. I don t see how it could help me.
what happens when you boot into recovery (hold x and power button at the same time to turn on phone)?
Thank you guys for your help I figured it out. I put the update.zip onto my sd card and install from it. Thank you I really appreciated your help.
Thank you again
Yup! that is the idea, put the file on your card, boot into recovery, and choose to install file. Glad it worked out for you.
Your the best thanks again.
