Itโ€™s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but thatโ€™s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • When i try to turn my phone back on it gets stuck at a battery ok page what do i do!

  • I am unable to reach recovery mode. I hold “X” and power and get the white M logo…and the screen freezes on that logo. It stayed like that for over 5 minutes until I pulled the battery. Anyone have a fix for this? Any other ways to reach recovery mode?

  • ok this sucks real bad! i didnt do the manual update, i just okd the notice i had on my phone to update. now the thing has been going from red eye to droid for 2 hrs! helppppp i have no way of contacting anyone! i need to get this thing working ๐Ÿ™

  • hey when i try to do it says file not found unable to open am i doing something wrong but question do i need to download all the alt links too

    • You only need to download 1 file. The “update.zip” file worked perfectly for me.

  • Hey, I keep getting an error when I install FlashworkMod Recovery “An Error occurred while attempting to run priviledged commands!” Do you know how to fix this?

  • I've updated the software and although it says it installed correctly it keeps cycling between “Droid” and the Eye

  • If i do the manual update, what should i do when the official update comes to my phone?

  • I'm getting a force close loop in the Gallery every time I open it… I can see it at first, but as soon as the photos start to fan out I start to get the loop. Any suggestions?

    • This was posted a few hours ago maybe it will help you. “I don't know if anyone else had this issue, but I applied update.zip (from the first link) to two different droids today and the gallery failed to work after the update. i reapplied the same update just to see if maybe that would work. no luck. then i downloaded update.zip from (alt link) and applied to both droids and it worked after that.”

  • Guys…How are you backing up all your apps/data. I would use titanium, but the problem is once you un-root titanium no longer works! Is there an app like titanium that will back up market links/app data without requiring root access??????????????????????????????

    • Ok, I did it. There's probably an easier way but here's what I did. 1. Flashed/Un-rooted back to Stock 2.0.1, and wiped data (I was coming from cyanogen) 2. Re-rooted through DM Updater 3. Restored all my apps/app data/market links using titanium backup. 3. Un-rooted (again) 4. Applied update to stock 2.1

      • I tried installing the update to 2.1 and it has been stuck on the Motorolla symbol for over 5 minutes now…..HELP!!!!! What should I do?

        • Nothing like having a conversation with yourself…but…if this will help anyone else her ya go.
I was stuck on the Motorolla symbol for over 10 minutes. Finally did a battery pull, rebooted again into recovery re-installed the update.zip again and walla, the second time she booted right up.

  • Been trying all day to get ANY ROM to work on this. I think my ROM Manager is bugged. But i tried this 2.1 update and BAM! It works great, Love the Live Backgrounds. Thanks for the heads up.

  • i am confused indian 2.1 update has 5 home screens
Hong kong 2.1 update has 9 home screens
and USA 2.1 update has 3 now whats going on and i have no idea about the features of European update

  • Just updated to Android 2.1 by following the instructions. Works perfectly!!! Thanks

  • I installed 2.1 last night and installed helix launcher and evey thing was working fine. I get up this morning and I am in an endless loop of helix doing a force close. how do I fix this/

  • I don't know if anyone else had this issue, but I applied update.zip (from the first link) to two different droids today and the gallery failed to work after the update. i reapplied the same update just to see if maybe that would work. no luck. then i downloaded update.zip from (alt link) and applied to both droids and it worked after that.

  • All I get is a Triangle. I hit the camera and up button and nothing. Do I have to hold it in? Hit it multiple times, or just hit it once and wait?

    • This guys post got it.

you r not hitting the volume up an camera at the same time. It is actually kind of challenging to get them at the same time. The trick i used was hit the volume up a millisecond before the camera key

  • ok so when are you gonna post the milestone update on here, somebody must have it, or are europeans not allowed to join in on this site?!?

  • just letting you know, for those of you who SUCK at getting into recovery mode like i do. if you go to the Security settings, and do a Factory Reset from there-it does the same thing and Clearing the Cache / Data wipe

  • when I try to apply the update it says it can't verify the file and cancells out of the update tried several download file same thing happens??

  • Thanks Kellex! i got it installed, and it fired right up. i had the eye thing for a few minutes, but then it came to life. this sight rocks!!!

  • I installed the 2.1 update, but know I have the superuser permission ninja in my app drawer. Is it supposed to be there?

  • is it possible to uninstall the update.zip after updating to 2.1?
I would like to go back to the old update and wait for verizon to send me update notification.?

    • The update.zip you installed is the exact same file Verizon is going to send you OTA. I personally don't know how to go back to 2.0.1 but I'm sure there is a way if your really set on waiting for Verizon. I just wanted to let you know though its the same file. Your just installing it early before they send it to you.

  • Mine worked but i still have 3 home pages and i dont have the new app launcher. whats the deal?

  • I don't think this is the official update from VZ. Because, if you have noticed, there is no Yahoo email account option available on this update, that was mentioned on the leaked VZ 2.1 update…Is this correct or am I missing something?

    • I have to agree.. I did a Mod Recovery to my Rooted Stock 2.0.1 and installed the update. System now reads as 2.1 update1 and I am still rooted.

    • See if you can set up a Yahoo mail account easier now under the regular email program from the app drawer.

  • Manual update worked fine. After reboot, I did lose all the phone information (number, PRL Version, MIN) and had no network. A second reboot cleared it up. Thanks Droid-Life !

    • Connect to your PC via USB cable. Pull down notification and touch USB connected notification. Touch Mount. Droid should show up on your PC as Removable Disk. Then copy and paste update.zip.

  • YAWN…..that was a lotta hype for nothing…still love the phone but that was so rediculously drawn out for a few smallllll changes. I knew what was going to change but somehow I still had higher expectations.

  • when i boot into recovery mode and hit the volume up and camera button nothing happens. please help

    • keep trying it takes a while …just hold them down and if nothing happens for like 10 secs stop and try again.

  • I and 4 of the guys I work with all followed this and it worked without a hitch for all of us! Awesome update by the way…

    • How long does it take your droids to boot up after the update? My first boot up took forever after doing the update, but then doing additional reboots now, it still takes mine like a lil over a minute to completely boot up.
      Thanks

  • Install successful! and I'm a newbie. But could use advice on making my POP3 email account send reliably. It's my own domain, hosted by GoDaddy, which uses a Yahoo SMTP outgoing address — Verizon support told me there would be problems until the update. But after the install, I can't get a test outgoing message to send from my Outbox, either with 3G or WiFi. Do I need to remove and re-enter account settings? (as I've done before to get email unstuck) Or am I likely to keep encountering this issue even with the update? If so, I'll probably have to return the phone (I have another week), as pretty as the new wallpapers are!

    • What is a Motorola Droidt ?? lol just seen myself in title heading ๐Ÿ™‚ Proves we are all way to busy to get this update than actually read something, lol.

    • After updating, am I still supposed to have the superuser permission ninja in the app drawer?

  • Ok, here is some good news for those of you who want the update now and don't have immediate access to a computer to move the file. If you copy it from downloads file with astro and paste it up one folder, it will work. When prompted, chose install update zip from sd card, right after the volume and camera button step … it does take some time, as someone else has said, on moto logo screen and driod eye screen, but be patient.

  • Ok downloaded 2.1 and phone info says it has 2.1 instead of the 2.0 before. So what is different about my phone now? My concern was wanting the voice to text. As in my manual. I called motorola before and they said it was in the 2.1 software. anyone try it yet?

  • Perfect, simple and it worked. Thanks kellex, this is why this site is my source for all things droid. sure I could troll forums but I'dd rather wait for the proven methods to hit here. Thanks again

  • oK I downloaded the 2.1 and when i check phone info it sayd 2.1 where it was 2.0 before, so now what has changed?

  • Ok, here's some good news for those of you who want to install the update, but don't have immediate access to a computer to move thefile from downloads to the root directory. If you use astro to copy and paste the file from downloads to the regular sd card directory, you can then follow the instructions posted by Kellex and

  • my gallery stopped working, it said “application is not installed on your phone” how can i go back to stock 2.0.1

  • I found a way to complete the update without a USB cord. Download Astro File Browser from the market open to associate it with zip files. Then open your browser and navigate to http://androidoverdrive.com/trident/update.zip. Download update. Go to astro file browser and select your download folder. Long click on update.zip and select edit-> move. Navigate to root of sd card select Menu->Edit->paste. Then follow the procedures above.

  • Just finished the update. Was worried for a second, it took quite a while to boot but it's up and running great now.

  • My device has sat at the droid eye for an hr now and manual udpate…what can I do to fix this?

  • Attempting update….just wanted to know if I do it from stock or from rooted droid??

  • Thank you Kellex and the rest of the team. Successfully updated using your instructions – any problems I ran into were self inflicted.

  • super user ninja in app drawer…how do i get rid of it? i updated to 2.1 successfully

      • I did this…I downloaded the update file and renamed it update.zip. so it would read “update.zip.zip” so I can differentiate. When I went into bootloader, I applied the update.zip from sd card and it performed the install. When it restarted, I realized I applied the root update file instead. So I went back and applied the new update zip file on my sd card, replacing the root update file. I went into bootloader again and applied the update.zip file and this time it took a few minutes to install. Up and running now, I opened my app drawer and lo and behond, the damn ninja is still there. I checked “about phone” and sure enough I had 2.1 update1 with ESE81….but I still have the stupid ninja. how do I get rid of it???

  • Kellex,
Last night I check ROM Manager and they had Ultimate Droid V9.0.0 available for installation. So I did and it says Firmware Version 2.1. Is this a rooted version of 2.1? The last version of UD had a Firmware version of 2.1 updater 1, if I remember correctly. Is Verizon 2.1 better than the UD v9.0.0?

  • Guys, will this process to 2.1 update work on a Brazilian retail, 2.0.1, rooted Milestone?

  • got it working. looks great so far not as many features as cyanogen but i think cyanogen was killing my battery a little to fast for my taste anyway. the speech to text feature on the stock keyboard is a sweet feature

  • Will this work for me?I still have a file still on my sd/card from when i unrooted that's named update. Do i need to delete this from my root?

    • Had I the same issue earlier this morning. I had an update.zip and a stock-update.zip in my root. all I did was just move those 2 files off my SD card and into My Documents on my desktop, just in case I might ever need them again in the future. After I did that I took the new update.zip file and placed it in the root where the other 2 update files had previously been. After that I simply followed the directions given here on DL. It work flawlessly and went smoothly.

  • I wish I could just download it to my phone but download crutch doesn't seem to be avaialble, stuck at work and can't find a work around with these computers at work to transfer myself the file anyone have any idea?? Email me!! DX0695@gmail.com I even tried emailing it to myself and can't download the file to my droid cause its a zip…

  • OH MY GOD THERE'S ONLY THREE SCREENS AND NO 3D APP DRAWER? !(@*#)!*@#)(!@)( FUKASLKDKK!!!

Just kidding I'm not a god damn retard.

    Thanks for the file bros!

  • Kellex you are the best! Worked perfect first shot, thanks for all your work and now I don't have to wait, HOORAY!!

  • Ok, noob question, how do I get xscope to save the update to the root folder instead of download folder, or is there a way to move the file? I have astro, but when I hit move, it does nothing … help! Thx

  • I am thoroughly enjoying this update and using voice recognition to type this post yes

  • i went back to stop and it seemed to be working now that i am rebooting it keeps going in a loop from droid to red eye from droid to red eye……

        • Apparently someone is running it on the update (posted above).. Says its a great combo..

          • Agreed, ran the “official update” from link above, and just re-downloaded Helix Launcher V1 (NOT V2).

haven't tried to break it (yet) but appears to run fine, even with live wallpaper (grass).

            Kaufkin

  • Will this work for the Droid Eris? I SOOOOOOO want 2.1 – have been putting off rooting….

    • no because only 10,000 people have received the update you will probably getting it tommorow

    • no just manually install it. i did it and it went flawlessly and im to tech wiz by any stretch of the imagination. Just follow the instructions above and you're golden

  • Totally painless install. I was afraid I would have to fix all my home screens and what not again after just reconfiging post-unroot yesterday, but everything stayed and HelixLauncher (not 2) is working fine. Soft keys, speech-to-text, market all functioning. Probably still go back to root though just for the kernels. Man, I was loving that battery life.

  • I have my facebook contacts to sync with my regular contacts but for some reason 1 or 2 of my facebook contacts does not sync up and one of those contacts disappeared from my normal phone contacts altogether. Anybody having an issue similar to this and did you find a fix for it?

  • help i keep getting the note “failed to read footer from /sdcard/update.zip” any help from any one would b awesome

    • I was getting the same error message. What I was doing wrong was renaming the file “Update” after i had transferred it to the root of my SD Memory Card. I then had a copy of it on my PC desktop, I renamed that to “Update” then I transferred it to the root of my SD Card and everything worked. So try that too….

  • Ok, probably a question that's been answered, but do I *NEED* to unroot to get the update, or can I just restore my saved standard ROM (rooted, but other than that stock 2.0.1) and run the update?

  • Blackdroid is suppose to have an UD rom based off the official 2.1 sometime today from what he said on the forums last nite im looking for it to be UD 9.1

    • I'd like a solid build on the ESE81.. Don't know if I'll go with the first one out (no disrespect to UD) but how stable can a build be in less than 24 hours?? Any input? Kell, I take it your running the 2.1 update now??

      • Hmm… It would be as stable as the stock 2.1 update since that is what the UD would be based on…. LOLOLOL

  • To be honest I thought I was going to be a poo pooer when this update came out. But I think it is good. The only reason I wanted the 3d app drawer was cause I hate the normal app tab at bottom of screen and also the bland gray background while your scrolling through apps. Helix launcher fixes that. Ya no 3d but that dont bother me. But it gives you shortcuts and gets that stupid pull tab off there. Win Win in my book. Now flash and we are good. Bring on 3.0. ;D

PS: As always,Kellex, your on top of it. Link 2 worked like a charm. Droid-Life is the one stop spot for all things Droid!!!!!

    • Helix launcher 2 has 3D app drawer but when i installed it, it went into a force close loop, can you try it and comment how it went because i am having problem with 2.1 apps i have downloaded like Nexus mod LWP and Helix launcher 2

  • Disappointing! The gallery and live wall paper is nice, but stuck with 3 screens still? How about some functionality instead of the eye candy! I waited to root thinking I'd get my more home screens w/ 2.1 which was my major desire. I'll be rooting ASAP! FU devs for letting the UEs have the screens and not us Americans!

  • Hey mine want boot up, it keeps going back and forth between the droid and the red eye somebody help me please

  • I downloaded successfully, but I still have the super user permission icon (ninja) on my app drawer..how do I get rid of it?

  • Is anybody having trouble downloading 2.1 apps they wont open for me, force close loop. (ex. helix launcher 2, Nexus mod LWP)

    • yea helix launcher 2 FC looped on me people were saying it was the fact the the builds of the two 2.1 update 1's are different but i cant really say. i heard a bunch of other people have this problem with the HelixLauncher2 and their 2.1 droids

  • mines said E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

plz help been waiting on 2.1 for a while now

    • 1) are you rooted
      2) do you have any other files named Update.zip
if not re download the file and try again

  • I thought this was suppose to have the 3-D app drawer? It says “2.1-update-1” under firmware, and i have pinch & zoom with the new gallery. So I guess its 2.1? I ran into that same error where it says
    E:Can't open/cache/recovery/command
but it still installed, and I rebooted. Was I suppose to do a reset to factory settings or is there really no 3-d app drawer. I thought I saw it listed in yesterday's posting

  • Installed, everything is working awesome except for can't download or update any apps from the Market! Help!

  • I downloaded the file posted up above and put it on my MobileMe site. Just open the link and it'll download. Enjoy. Feel free to repost, but the link is only active for the next 15 days.

    files.me.com/rossmd/wqmsnf

  • Getting error messages? Here's the fix….

So, I did get this message every time:
    E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

And the first try, I got this:
    E:Can't open/cache/recovery/command
    –Install from sdcard…
    Finding update package…
    Opening update package..
    Verifying update package…
    E:signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.

Then I realized, I DID NOT PUT THE FILE IN THE CORRECT PLACE. Threw it in the root directory, and it went through. Check your files before ya freak. Now that I just booted to 2.1 for the first time, I'm gonna go play.

    • I'm getting the same thing. How do I know what/where the root is? My Mac opens “No Name” and I just try to drag from my downloads on the laptop and drop it onto the No Name. I see it show up in the list of files, I can even rename it. Thanks!

      • By the root, we mean drop it in the first directory listing you get when you're looking at your card. You can also try a file manager for your phone, like astro.

  • Had to completely uninstall Helix Launcher and re-install to get it to work, and in the process lost all of the customizing of 7 screens I had before. But its up and running, better than ever.

  • Using “alt link 2”, I definitely just bricked my phone. It won't boot farther than the Motorola logo.

What's really bad is that I can do Power+X to get the triangle, but camera+volume up doesn't even work, and so I don't think I can even do a factory reset! Looks like it's totally dead.

I don't know if it's “alt link 2” that is the problem or something like all of the hacked 2.1 apps I have installed. Looks like I'm headed to BestBuy today to cash in on my black tie protection…

      • I was able to get the debug menu back (I guess I didn't press camera+VolUp simultaneously enough the first few times). So I re-applied update.zip. That gets the boot screen to the DROID eye… but it doesn't want to go farther than that.

        I guess I'm headed for a factory reset. ๐Ÿ™

        • TED CHILL OUT.

My red eye sat there for at least a couple of minutes. Let these things load. Be patient. Stop jumping to conclusions so quickly.

          • My Moto logo sat there for like 15 minutes with no activity. After update #2, Red Eye wasn't doing much better.

Just starting fresh. Holy crap — after doing a factory reset, my Firmware version is “2.1-update1” and my build number is ESE81. Well, that was easy.

  • I fixed my issue all I did was erase ALL other update files on my SD and used FireFox to download file NOT CHROME,.then I mounted and put the file on root of SD renamed and presto we got 2.1.1 people so don't give up just keep trying. You can rename it before you put it on the SD root too if you want.If you have a computer do the steps manually and your problems should be solved. Also I re-downloaded the file too erased the one that failed so do that and good luck:)

  • I am having trouble keeps saying install aborted do i have to go back to stock first?

  • Android 2.1 doesn't seem to be booting on my phone… Just see Motorola logo forever. ๐Ÿ™ I guess I better try to get Android 2.0.1 back on my phone.

      • No other update.zip's. Only the one on /sdcard/.

I did manage to get the debug menu back (phew) so I guess I can factory reset if worse comes to worst.

  • Thanks! The download and install completed. Followed instructions exactly. Step 6 was a little tricky as you have to press the camera button only half way.

  • this might be a really dumb question to ask for most of you but……where is the “root of your sd card” located at?

      • still dont get it? lol….. sorry
do you mean just add it into the phone folder by itself?

        • ok so you open up your phone's files on your computer ok, now you need to put it at the very bottom and make sure that you dont put it in a folder, so make sure you can see the file without opening a folder, do you get it?????

          • got it… thanks brendan. really appreciate your help. ill let u know how it turns out

  • I made the mistake of installing the 2.1 update which un-rooted my phone… Is there a way to root it again now that I am running the “official” 2.1 unrooted or do I need to wait until droid 2.1 is rooted?

    • You are stuck with it for now. You will have to wait until they find root for this new build, no idea on how long that will be.

  • can you post a video for those of us that are watting to get the update starting tomorrow???? Just dying to see what it looks like and how well it works?

    Thanks

  • i cant get it to work, when i got the file i was in a zip folder named update, i named it update.zip and i think i put it in the right place. i put it in where all the rest of the folders are…….

    • Just name it update if your using windows. It will recognize that it is a zip file and add the extension for you. Place in root and then follow directions. Takes about 5min tops.

    • dont rename it zip is referring to the type of file so just rename it update and it will automatically put a zip behind it. otherwise it would be update.zip.zip

  • Wow, do I ever suck. I don't even know enough how to “put” it on the SD card root, even though I DO have Astro. I'm not even sure where the root is to “put” the downloaded file there. Amateur!

    • Charles,
      Download file.
Plug phone into computer via USB.
Mount Phone (Use pull down menu and click on the mount option)
Drag file onto SD Card (The root is the first level of the file structure so basically after you open up the phone when it's connected you'll drop it right in that first place)

  • KELLEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You da Man! Once again. Wow, Thanks, Really, Heading up to Oregon April 24th. Love to meet.

  • I get to step 7… and it fails to find the file. I put it in the root of my sdcard like it was explained, but it says it can't verify the file and aborts the install. Anyone else having this problem?

    • I just posted this about 4 mins ago and I'm having the exact same issue, I followed everything exactly to a T, at the bottom of my thing its saying Installation aborted, I'm stuck now. Someone know what is wrong?

      • Looking through the comments over the past 15 minutes, quite a few people are experiencing this.

        • are you still stuck at that screen? what happens if we select reboot system now? will it reboot back to how we had it before we tried to update?

          • Thats what i want to know as well, just want to make sure my phone will go back to normal.

          • apparently it works if you don't rename it .zip just leave the file as you downloaded it. its installing for me right now

          • I didn't rename anything, just kept it the same. I wonder why it is happening on some while others it works fine. I am still at the System Recovery screen, do I chose “reboot system now”

      • E:Can't open/cache/recovery/command
        –Install from sdcard…
        Finding update package…
        Opening update package..
        Verifying update package…
        E:signature verification failed
        Installation aborted

        thats all i keep getting…
        i believe it is because of:E:Can't open/cache/recovery/command
if so how do i fix it?

  • I had originally used DMUpdater to root. I then installed ROM Manager but no custom ROMs. I was rooted. I then went through your steps to return to stock but only to find I was at stock but still rooted and with the SPRecovery images still on my SD card. I went ahead and did the manual install of 2.1. IT WORKED and all the while rooted ๐Ÿ™‚ Did I do something wrong somewhere (probably many places)? Am I at risk of anything being unstable? All seems well with all the new features…

btw…GREAT WEBSITE AND INFO DAILY!!! KEEP IT UP!!!

  • Anyone having problems getting Helix Launcher to work with the new 2.1?

It shows it as installed, but it will no longer run. I had restored the main home screen as the default before the install, but now I can't open it. It will not show up in the list of applications? Some sort of issue with the build name maybe?

    I need Helix back!!!

    • I'm reas that hellixluncher doesn't work in 2.1, so that is why you can no see it in your app list, but hellix has a version that works on 2.1 hellixluncher2, search it in the market

    • Helix is working fine for me including Live Wallpapers. I left Helix as the default launcher before installing 2.1.

  • quick question, I put the update.zip file into the root of my sdcard, booted into recovery, selected apply update.zip and then it is now saying E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

    • Same thing here

Umm. everything went fine until I went to apply sdcard:update.zip

      It says:

      E:Can't open/cache/recovery/command
      –Install from sdcard…
      Finding update package…
      Opening update package..
      Verifying update package…
      E:signature verification failed
      Installation aborted.

What do I do know? i followed every step but now this comes up. Can I turn off the power and restart the phone or do i have to do something else now? I dont want to ruin/brick the phone. Any help? My phone is not rooted or anything.

      I should have just waited…
      nick

      • thats exactly what mine says, now I don't know if I should reboot system now or what? anyone have an answer to this?

          • I'm having the same problem, tried factory resetting and going back to 2.0.1 but it seems like its refusing to run any kind of update.zip file now

  • Is the HTC IME weird for anyone else now with the update? It's putting the suggestions lower than normal, making the top row of keys half-covered by suggestions. It's really hard to type this way. It's a shame, that's the best keyboard around!

    • That's how mine was for a while. I think I was running Cyanogen when it was like that. Now I'm stock 2.0.1 and its fine. So maybe its something with 2.1?

    • Long click on that suggestion bar and just drag it up higher or put it anywhere you want to ๐Ÿ™‚ gl

  • Thanks Kellex. Works great and looks great. I appreciate all your hard work on this site. I check it everyday.Jon

  • I need a review or a video. I feel like this is becoming one of the biggest decisions in life HAHAHA

  • I need a review or a video. I feel like this is becoming one of the biggest decisions in life HAHAHA

  • Nice. I'll be sticking with cyanogen for now though until 2.1 gets rooted. Also, I was reading the UD9 thread on droidforums yesterday, BD said he should have a working copy of UD built from ESE81 sometime around noon today.

  • I don't know why but I think I'd rather wait for the OTA to come to my phone

      • Lol. I can do it. I'd just rather receive the update OTA from Verizon so if it f's up somehow, I can blame it on them. They probably can't even tell but I guess I'm being paranoid(even though I've rooted before) lol. And I have no problem waiting anyways

  • It appears that the amazon mp3 application doesn't work with 2.1

It disappeared from my applications and refused to reinstall from my Astro backup on the SD card.

    • Try this. Go to settings-> applications-> manage applications-> hit menu-> filter-> all. Then go down and look for the applications that start with com.etc…. and find the one that is for the amazon mp3. If you find it, click on it and click uninstall. then reboot you phone and it should work

      • settings-> applications-> manage applications-> hit menu-> filter->

That path revealed the MP3 Store application, but when I went into it there was no uninstall button, just clear data and force stop.

        • Um… That appears to be a problem, the only way that i know how to fix that know, it to flash a rom with the application. That requires the 2.1 to be rooted which it isn't yet. Hopefully someone else knows how to fix it without it being rooted.

    • just checked my Amazon MP3 store and it worked fine with 2.1… I ran it from my App drawer

      • I take it back, it's now under m for mp3 store instead of being under a next to the regular amazon store app.

        • LMAO!

I didn't even think to look there. Thanks for the tip! I feel much better about the update now!

      • If you have Astro you can find the apk in /system/apps and even run it and it will work fine, but there is no link in the app manager.

        Haven't found a workaround yet.

  • just going to wait for it to be rooted or until Cyanogen/koush use the ESE81 build in their releases. Seems like the smart thing to do….

  • Dumb question – what happens when Verizon tries to push the update OTA over to a manually updated phone? Will it go, “oh, this phone's already got an update” and move on? I'd love the update but I'm willing to wait for the OTA (plus I just think it's way cool for it to update on its own) and I was just curious. Just how many Droids are out there anyway? Knowing my luck I'll probably be in the last batch to receive the update.

    • That's what I asked (probably in a dumber way lol). Hope someone has time to answer this.

      • It was already answered. If you manually update…. you already have the update and the there is no reason for the official update to update itself again… lol

Either way it's the same thing. Either update now and be done, or wait. Just depends on if you want to wait. Once you have updated manually, the system will see that you already are updated and that's all. No worries guys, if you want it now… go for it!

  • Uh oh… what am I doing wrong? I downloaded the zip file, put it on the root of my sd card, turned my phone off, rebooted with Power + X, but when I get to the exclamation point and hit the volume up & camera buttons at the same time, nothing happens… How long do I wait? Do I need to leave them held in until something happens…? YIKES – THANKS!

    • you r not hitting the volume up an camera at the same time. It is actually kind of challenging to get them at the same time. The trick i used was hit the volume up a millisecond before the camera key.

      • NICE! Thank you VERY much – it's installing now. I'm going to have to eat at my desk this afternoon so I can play with this stupid thing now… ๐Ÿ˜€

      • .. or like someone told me.. HOLD DOWN the volume up key and then TAP the camera button.. the screen came up instantly…

    • Make sure you are only pushing the camera button to the first click – half way. And make sure you are pushing the “up” volume switch. Try it several times gently until it works if it doesn't work on first try.

    • Just keep trying. I think it's a timing thing with those 2 buttons. It took a while to get mine to display the menu too.

  • Ok here is what you have to think about, before you install the update. If you only rooted your phone to get you phone to look and be 2.1, then install the update. If you rooted your phone to try many custom roms, don't install the update, until you know it can be rooted. If you rooted you phone because you push and pull apps and make backups, don't install the 2.1 update. Finally, if you rooted you phone because of the wifi tethering and over-clocking, do not install the 2.1 update. Overall, do not install the update unless you want the stability and a 2.1 software.

    • Thanks for everything Kellex. Very fast download and easy to install. I'm currently updating as I type.

  • Yo Kellex, If I go against my gut instinct and unroot and install the update.zip will I be able to re-root with DM?? I could care less about the update but just wanting your opinion.. Thanks

    • I'm no expert by any means, but wouldn't rotting with DM as it currently exists put you back at 2.0.1?

      • True.. Well I guess I'll just stick with my current Droidmod 164, 2.0.1.. That is until the 2.1 is built and polished..

        • If you load the official 2.1 update you will NOT be able to root again in any way at the moment. They have locked it up. You will have to wait until it gets rooted again, no idea on how long that will take.

So if you take the update, you will no longer need or be able to use Dmupdater or Rom Manager.

  • what if we download and install this and the real update comes to prompt to update, what should we do? Cancel it or ignore it? btw, what is the advantage of rooting the update as opposed to the official one they send out? Thanks!

    • When I manually installed the 2.0.1 update, I just never got an update notice. I think you only get the notice if the version of the software on your phone is out of date. Once you manually install this, your phone will just think that Verizon is the one who gave it to you and won't bother with reminding you that an update is available.

  • Anyone else stuck in a reboot loop? I actually booted into recovery again and re-applied the update again

    • This happened to me once when I accidentally pressed the “down” side of the D pad instead of the center “enter” button.

      • Actually ended up doing a factory reset, but when the phone came back up, I was showing 2.1update1. No to reload most of my apps….

  • The 2.1 update plus Helix Launcher is really a great combo. Just FYI my fellow Droidians =)

    • Whoops, replied to wrong comment. Should be here … Agreed. Everything appears to run snappily. Just want root now for overclocking and Titanium backups.

      • After installing Helix L. Push the home button and select Helix, then press Menu and slect Configure. Then at the top it sais Screen Size select desired amount of screens. I have mine at 5. Dont need 7 and it works great.

  • I don't even want the 2.1 update.. Really happy with DMv1.0.. Gonna wait for a build on the ESE81.. Standing by for sickness..

    • Agreed. Everything appears to run snappily. Just want root not for overclocking and Titanium backups.

  • Works good! Anybody rooted yet? Want more screens and overclocking. Wish I had the know-how to help with that.

  • How about a review of the official 2.1 update for those of us that are on the fence about unrooting?

    • I agree. I unrooted and everything but am now skeptical about it and I want to see it or know what its like before I do it

      • Still same 3 windows, app drawer is the same, but 3d gallery, live wallpaper. Runs smooth so far no f/c. Camera has icons on the side of the screen that I havent seen before i.e. no flash, Mountian view stuff like that. I am also able to see videos that I couldn't before…

      • I agree!!! I don't know if it really want 2.1 stock….I don't know the benefits, if any, outweigh my cyanogen configuration right now.

        • I'm with everybody else, want to see 2.1 before I or even want to install it. Thank Kellex for your generosity, just install Black Droid V9 and I like it so far forgot all about the OTA.

  • Please remove my DropBox link, DropBox has asked me to stop hosting the file

  • I hope this release is rooted soon for the benefit of the poor souls who are doing this update.

It's pretty much certain you'll lose the ability to root. This means you'll have to wait until this 2.1 release is rooted before you can go back to doing all the things you did before.

Maybe I'm jaded. Maybe I'm just spoiled. But I see no real benefit to going to an “official” 2.1 when the best of it will inevitably make its way to the rooted custom rom scene within a couple of days.

  • Is there any information on file types for the live wallpapers so I can create my own? Or a place to download more?

  • Joy!

Worked flawlessly. Now I can't wait for all the posts to begin … “Huh? I whined for a month over THIS?” ๐Ÿ™‚

    BS

  • Kellex I already have 2 update.zip files on my root. one just says update and one says stock-update. I think they are the files from DMupdater. do I need to remove any of these update files before I put the new update on my root?

    • good question… i have the same two files and want to know what, if anything, i need to do with them before installing… can anyone chime on this and help us out?

      thanks

  • Kellex,
Have you done this??? Is it safe, or should we wait. I have the file and am waiting on your guidance! Thanks so much for this site. Without you I would have never even tried to root and see all the possibilities our phone offers!

  • firefox tells me that the site is untrusted and is going to steal my identity….

I really want to put this on my lady's droid so she can stop complaining about all the greatness of rooted rom's. she just wants the basic phone functions “like everyone else” SO UNAPPRECIATIVE OF WHAT SHE IS RUNNING!!!!

    • Kellex, did you do it? Is it worth it? And, if I do it, I wont be able to root or anything until someone comes out with something new?

    • thanks, pal… I'm sitting in 2.1 now and it's fine.. I mainly like the speech to text input….

  • It keeeps saying error not found when i try to goto the link you left for the fileplease send it

  • I cannot find the “golf” button :P!!! Thanks a million for all you are doing Kellex!!!!!

      • kellex i need help, hope i didn't destroy my phone. he goes between droid and the eye but no farther

        • Pull the power boot into recovery of you have android go in it and boot your recovery file

      • See, now, what sucks is that you apprently fixed it and now the rest of us have no idea where the “golf” button was! And I so want to play golf today!

  • did it this morning. I was kinda disappointed though… only 3 screens?

The only good Live wallpaper in my opinion (which isnt too distracting) is “Neutral Network”

    Everything else does run smoother…

  • At 7 AM Pacific time, the file above is not on that site..

PS, are we driven or what? I'm the same way.. hope you get some sleep.

    John

  • Be Prepared to reinstall Swype … tried the “Swype Fix” of changing the Input method back and forth, but no go; had to do a complete reinstall; also, Live wallpapers does not work with Home++ … until they fix it, that is …

  • Not worth the wait at all!! dont even have the 3d icon thing.. now i cant even go back to 2.0.1 and root my phone
