If you didn’t have enough confirmation that the Android 2.1 OTA update could start arriving to your devices tomorrow, the Motorola Facebook page has now added their two cents which hopefully leaves you as an official believer…
Motorola The Android 2.1 upgrade for DROID by Motorola is being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow afternoon. It is expected that the broader phased rollout to all DROID users will begin shortly thereafter—we will keep you posted. A list of enhancements included in the upgrade is available here: http://bit.ly/VZW-DroidEnhancements.
Yes this is the same Facebook page that attempted to break Droid update news back in February. It’s actually been a smart move by Motorola to remain pretty silent until today while the blog world was off spreading the news like wild fire. The last thing they need is another “Oops!”
Their idea of “release notes” or “changelog” is laughable. I'd like to see which bugs were also fixed… they never seem to include that information.
my only question is whens it hitting the uk or is it just sticking to verizon for now??
The main question is, will Droid users still be stuck with just 3 screens, or will we have 5 like the Nexus One, for widgets, etc?
there are 7 with cyanogen's mod
You can also get 7 with the Helix 1 launcher which does not require root access.
I went back to OTA so hope 2.1 is good if not back root and CyanogenMod 5.0.4.2 i go. that is if they dont block me with the 2.1
Me too, I gave in and went back to stock. If this update turns out crappy I am gunning for somebody LOL.
This almost makes me sad. I do not know where my smiles will come from on Moto pic Mondays comments filled with “2
Also Google Maps is being updated tonight to 4.1 on all Android versions. It's a nice touch for a good weekend.
Judging from the roll out schedule, the majority will not start receiving the update until Saturday. Hopefully the first 10,000 go fine so everything stays on that schedule.
Please don't leave me out to dry because I'm a laker fan, but I LOVE THIS SITE!!! My girlfriend is quite jealous of my droid phone and nick named it “DROIDA”. When I'm on my phone, she says that I am cheating on her, lol. She's just about due for a phone upgrade, and now she's talking about getting one…THEN SHE WILL SEE WHY I LOVE MY DROIDA…uhh…I mean, DROID SO MUCH!! (as well as this site) Thanks for the good work, it is really appreciated…(by me, not my girlfriend as of yet)
I have the exact thing going on with my girlfriend and my Droid. I'm afraid to leave the two alone in a room together. On Valentine's day she was asking me what I was gonna get my Droid. I told her I was buying it a beautiful widget screen. She thinks I'm nuts! Just wait till I get her one though ha!
Still not sure if i want to go straight to it, love the root access.
I was actually believing this new OTA rumor but now that it's on Motorola's Facebook page I don't believe it.
Haha
LOL. Damn it feels good to be right.
This came from PC world “One thing that the Motorola Droid won't get in the Android 2.1 software update is the new 3D application launcher found on the Nexus One, though despite this, most of the new features have made their way to the Droid”.
Can this be installed via the helix launcher? And is the 3D launcher just the scrolling where the installed apps go up and into the backgorund of the screen?
Yes the 3D launcher is exactly what you mentioned. I have heard a few reasons why they aren't including the 3D launcher. I am not claiming any of these to be accurate, they are just what I have read on different forums. I've read that it has caused the Droid to lag too much when its installed, people have speculated that its just something exclusive for the Nexus One, I have also read that android phones with a physical keyboard wont receive the 3D launcher (not exactly sure why that would matter but I'm sure there is probably some technical reason behind it.) Hope that may have answered your question, if anyone knows something else please post.
Thank you, that's what I figured, but if the 3D launcher can be included in stable roms like cyanogen's I wonder why not in the Droid update since most are 2.1 variations?
Honestly to me the only reason that makes sense is the 3D launcher is just something exlusive only for the Nexus One. I wish I could verify this but to me its the only reason that would seem plausible. Hopefully one day we can get our answer from Moto or VZW. Or maybe its something to come in a future update. We shall see. Cant wait for the update!
The 3D app launcher was designed solely with portrait in mind. Which means it is buggy in landscape. Which is why it won't show up in official releases. All the mods put it on, but that is usually a source of problems and bugs because it is not designed for that. Does it work? Yes, but not well, and why would Motorola put a buggy feature on a stable release? They would have to reprogram the 3D app launcher entirely, which would take far longer than would be appreciated. This is also why it will show up on non-slider Android devices, but not on devices like the Droid.
