Anyone else see the newest Verizon ad which features a mom and her daughter in the mall? Cute one right? Did you happen to notice the quick view of the mom’s Motorola Droid running what appears to be a custom ROM? At the 16 second mark, she pulls up her Droid which definitely has a black notification bar with white clock and 3G notifier. Looks like we had a sneaky rooted user slip one by the big wigs at Big Red. Awesome.

Where can you see this ad, this video is not working
I use family locator and the screens that I have look nothing like that… When I locate my son I get an icon over a Microsoft map and when he is in a mall I get the icon over a map sometimes… if GPS is working in the building. Plus the app continually logs you off so to find again which can take 2 minutes per find requires constant logging on… More hassle than its worth I am canceling the service…
PS: I use a droid for locating and my son has an LG enV Touch

Can anyone here do a cyanogen tutorial on the new 5.0.5 build? I know it is new and just came out today but i have heard some pretty amazing things about it. Since this is the preeminent site for all things droid I figured i would ask, thanks!
just follow the video kellex made for 5.0.4.x it is the same install process. also yes it is pretty sweet, i feel pretty confident calling cyanogenMOD/Koush the best custom ROM for droid available.
Are you a Mac user???…if so you may want to check some of the settings on you computer and make sure your .zip files are not being unzipped and placed back into the their folder without you knowing…it makes sense 99.99% of the time to have this feature…except here where u want to have the update.zip file still zipped when you put it into your droids root folder

K im getting annoyed im trying too root my phone, and everytime i go to apply the update.zip in the phone it keeps getting aborted and doesnt install. What the hell am i doing wrong lol

It does work on Droid, it can be used as a locator but not a locatee, it does exactly what the commercial shows it does.

Thanks for the clarification Syntakk. It's interesting that Verizon's site doesn't show it as being compatible though. I suppose it simply means there's no application for Droids or maybe it's a reference to the lack of locatee functionality. In either case, it seems like the add is a bit misleading to me.
Since you're familiar with Locator, can you see any advantage in paying $10/month versus using Latitude for free?
The devices that say they are family locator capable means that they are able to be used as a locatee. All devices are capable of being a locator.
As for reasons for using it, there are several things it can do that Latitude cannot. You can setup certain locations for 1/4, 1/2, or 1 mile radius and be notified when someone enters or leaves that area. You can also get scheduled updates of someone's location. It's pretty much the ultimate stalker tool 😉
Thanks for the info. Sounds like a good tool. However, the stalker references seem a little strange. I am assuming the locatee has to permit the locator to track. Is this correct? If not, this seems a bit scary.
first you need to get your stalkee to agree to get a phone on your Verizon account 😉

LOL nice catch, but I suspect it's just a PhotoShop job. Also, Family Locator does work on the Droid, set one up yesterday 🙂 It's a web app.
I am guessing the entire screen was just a photoshop job inserted into the commercial, and not likely a photo of a real Droid (rooted or not). As with tv commercial lighting there would be glare issues. 🙂
