It’s Official: Flash Coming with Froyo

This announcement has me feeling like singing a song…(Insert Michael Buble melody) “Andy Rubins, he’s the man, he just dropped a Flash 10.1 release date bombshell on all the Android fans.  Bam.”  Wow.

Andy Rubins, the VP of engineering for Google had a quick chat with media members last week and casually tossed out a Flash notice…

He also promised that full support for Adobe’s Flash standard was coming in the next version of Android, code-named Froyo, for frozen yogurt (previous Android releases were called Cupcake, Donut and Eclaire, and are represented outside building 44 on the Google campus with giant sculptures of the desserts). Sometimes being open “means not being militant about the things consumer are actually enjoying,” he said.

He also likened Apple to North Korea…

Mr. Rubin also addressed many other topics—like whether consumers actually care if their mobile phone software is “open” or not. He insisted that they will, comparing closed computing platforms to totalitarian governments that deprive their citizens of choice. “When they can’t have something, people do care. Look at the way politics work. I just don’t want to live in North Korea,” he said.

Awesome.  I would say that the Google I/O conference will most definitely be the first sighting of both Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 working happily together.

Time to celebrate?

    Flash a-ah
    Savior of the Universe
    Flash
    He save everyone of us
    Flash
    He's a miracle
    Flash
    King of the impossible

    He's for everyone of us

He save with a mighty hand
    Every man every woman
    Every chill-he's a mighty
    Flash

    Just a man

This is awesome news! Hopefully Moto and Verizon will push this out as soon as it is available. This will be the biggest selling point in android and moto history.

i decided to just let 2.2 come out when it comes out….last time I made a big deal of an update I got 3000+ emails.

    1. rals

You were the infamous person that showed photoshopped 2.1 update on the screen lol?

  20. jerbush91

I do believe I would love me some Froyo and Flash… thanks for the BAM!!! Now that is what I call some shock and awe on Apple!

  21. jbfickler

WAHOO! My pants are on the ground as we speak….

  22. palomosan

Nice, how soon before we see it port it to 2.1.

  23. aarynk

EXCITED!!!! Bring on 2.2!!! (Sometime soon please VZW/MOTO)

  24. Angel

Nice…who is gonna be the first to start porting 2.2 custom ROMs…cant wait!!! =)

    1. gonzo319

that was my next question, I hope we (those who are rooted) have to go back to stock 2.1 to get the 2.2 update. I never went back to stock and decided to stay rooted, because of all of the custom things you can do to the droid. I sure hope they'll start porting 2.2 as a custom ROM as soon it comes out.

      1. gonzo319

sorry typo….Don't have to go back to stock.

  25. rals

I think we need a video on how to go to stock 2.1 I'm ready for the next update lol

    1. DroidFan

I think you can do it pretty simple in Rom Manager.

      1. rals

Really? I actually have had some problems with Cyanogenmod. My memory has been eaten up all the time, and can't seem to run a few apps like 2.1. What's worst I couldnt do both google maps and Pandora at the same time.

How do I do it in ROM Manager?

    2. DroidFan

just to help you when it does come out.

    3. Ray

just go into rom manager and hit download rom and there one for returning to stock

  26. kulz

    keep the good news rolling~!!!!!!!!

  27. teejaytm

So any dates flying around yet or no?

    1. kellex

No idea on a consumer date. We're thinking May for developers though.

      1. teejaytm

Wish I was a developer HA

  28. bildo818

I JUST rooted my 2.1 and don't know what to expect. I still have yet to block my OTA updates because I am still reading into this. But what is the consensus since i am new to the rooting scene. Do I block the OTA updates or what for a ROM that will handle the flash? Or is that even possible?

    1. JimK

I also just rooted my Droid and now I wish I had waited…*sigh* well, at least there's an easy path back to stock if Froyo turns out to be made of awesome and win. 🙂

      1. bildo818

Yeah…I am one of those types (which is good in this case) where I read and read and read before committing to something. I waited a while to do my Droid but I am happy now that I did – However, I am hard over Flash. I want it like Cindy Crawford when I was 12 — I don't wish I waited, because I know rooted has awesome capabilities….But if I don't block OTA updates, and Froyo comes out, that will just get rid of my rom and update me right? Wont' mess my phone up right? Thats what I think you meant by your comment of going to stock.

I just am now reading into blocking OTA updates and over clocking. But I still don't know if I can OC without using these kernels Im reading about. I purchased all the best Root Apps out there to support the devs. Now its just finding time to utilize them correctly. I wish this site has forums. I really appreciate Kellex's hard work with droid-life. It is my go-to site. If it had forums, I wouldn't go anywhere else.

        1. Cameron Summerson

If you're using a stock kernel, you can't OC. You can get a custom kernel from ROM manager for whatever ROM you're running – I'm stock with P3Driods 1000Mhz kernel right now and it runs like butter. There are a few other options, too – like ChevyNo1's kernels, which also work on stock. If you're running something like Cyanogenmod, there is the bekit kernels, and Rummys ROMS come with OC kernels out of the box.

          Hope that helps.

          1. bildo818

I have jrummy remix the red one —- So you say it comes with them out of the box, but how do I access them? Do I need to go into SP Recovery? Or Rom Manager? I like Helix 2, but it is very unresponsive and I think over clocking may help it speed up a little.

BTW…I really do appreciate your reply. Any help and direction is much appreciated. Its always good to get support from the community.

    2. Ray

its prety simple block the update then when the release date gets near just unroot and you will be good to go. Returning to stock is really simple so theres no worries

  29. maizekidstill

Nice. Let the developers get their hands on it and we will have it in no time.

  30. US_Marine_beta

Best news I've heard all year. HOpefully the update to 2.2 stays on track once an official release date is announced.

  31. Mrpicolas

Oh boy were gonna have a bunch of flashers running around call the cops!!! Lolz….

  32. anDROID4Life

That's brilliant! Now all that remains is the hope that the next update isn't a complete debacle like the 2.0.1->2.1 update turned out to be.

    1. Mrpicolas

snt froyo beeing pushed by google and not your respective carrier? I thougjt that was what was beeing aimed forI

  33. DroidFan

I love the comparison of Apple to North Korea even better than the flash announcement. LOL

    1. kellex

Hah was almost thinking the same thing.

  34. kellex

Oh my, I just hit 1,000 comments. What a day, what a day.
