Giant Rumor: HTC Thunderbolt Will Have 1.2GHz Dual-core Snapdragon, Gingerbread, 5MP Front Camera

It feels wrong to even report on this, but even rumors this ridiculous sounding need a little attention at times.  The HTC Thunderbolt (our 12-pic gallery) has apparently started to pop up in German retail systems with a set of specs that make almost any device on the planet sound like an unfed infant baby.  You ready for this?  According to the screenshot above, the Thunderbolt will have a 4.3″ screen, a dual-core MSM8960 Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.2GHz, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), an 8MP back camera, 5MP front camera, 16GB of internal storage, an SD card slot expandable to 128GB and an 1800 mAh battery.  Wow.

Where do we even begin with this?  First of all, the screenshot looks like something out of a cheesy used car forum, but who knows, maybe Germans run retail websites like that.  Second, 128GB expandable SD card slot?  Yowzaz.  5MP front cam?  Will we have a front hump to mock the Droid X’s back hump?  Oh and then there’s that dual-core Snapdragon…you know, the chip that Qualcomm just announced a month ago?  I guess it’s ready for prime time!

I have nothing else to say…you guys run with this.  Fake?  Faker?  Fakest?

Oh, I should also point out that the tipster who sent it was from Germany and had a broken email address. Hello, giant hoax?  Please be real though?

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

launched a number of new fashion items! ! Fashionable
and welcome everyone to come buy. If necessary, please

  • Maybe HTC bought way too many 5mp sensors at some point that are looking a little dated now and they are just dumping them here on the FFC?

  • This can’t be…..i would love it too….except add some hdmi :)…..but there is no cdma radio for calls…..still if this comes to verizon even with a lil lower specs….goodbye droid x…

  • In the picture where it states the processor power that is not a period in between the 1 and 2 as in 1.2 GHz, that is a comma as in 1,2 GHz. If this means 1.2GHz someone please reply.

  • Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not terribly impressed. It’s just a bump up from last season’s specs. I’m waiting for something revolutionary not more storage space. But regardless, it’s still a great handset and makes me feel bad about my Droid X.

    • You must have missed the part about the stupidly fast processor. It’s ok, it happens to everyone once in a while.

  • HTC did say that the Thunderbolt wasn’t “the next great smart phone, it’s the one after that”. (paraphrase)

But, if they stepped it up that much. i will stand in line for this one. And, the Verizon iPhone can bite it! LOL

  • Have you ever thought it might have multiple micro sd ports to plug in like 4 to get it up to 128?? the only thing i could see it missing is a 3d 1080p screen and a micro blu- ray player lmao 🙂

    • Since the specs say “slot” and not “slots”, the assumptions are founded. However, something could have been lost in translation…

  • Does no one realize some things? The reason the e-mail is fake, is because if he had put this info out on his personal e-mail, he’s most likely be fire for LEAKING INFORMATION THAT HASN’T BEEN RELEASED. When people get information, it’s only a small group, and people working for these companies sign wavers saying that they can’t release info that hasn’t been Publically announced, therefore making this phone a great possibility, since it is in Vodaphone’s(who is part of Verizon) inventory. Why else do you all think that HTC has been laying low for a while. They want to release a great first 4G LTE phone on the fastest 4G network. I will own this phone no matter what.

  • I was already planning on getting this phone. If it had those specs, I would stand in line way longer then someone waiting for an i*hone.

  • IF those are the actual specs for this phone then it will set a whole new standard for high-end android phones coming out in the future. And I say that with a big hesitance because as good as it sounds, its almost too good to be true like Kellex said in the article. BUT, IF it is real then it will be my next phone as soon as it is available no matter how high my ETF is!

  • Shhhhh, dang it, I was just daydreaming I was out fishing in my new Ocean Kayak Trident 13 when my wife video called me to tell me my new waterproof tablet just came in. P.S. I’m gonna have to call this nicht wahr 😉

  • May have already been said, but those specs wouldn’t be SO outlandish if the top of the page said HTC Scribe.

  • A thunderbolt sent by the gods themselves. Thank you Thor. Thank you Zeus. Thank you Jupiter.

    • C’mon now. Everyone knows that Chuck doesn’t drop calls, calls drop him…and run…out of fear.

  • Don’t play with me. I just wet my pants. This would make me sell my DX now so I would be first in line to grab this sucker. This is verizon right?

  • Well..I mean its possible for all of those except the front camera and such a high expandable memory.

    There’s no way.

  • Really impressive if so but I’d rather have a Motorola with their better quality hardware, screens and an OMAP 4430/40. The SGX540 is still faster than the Adreno 205. Just replace blur with LauncherPro or a custom rom anyways.

  • Only a 1.2 ghz dual core….we wanted a 2.5 ghz dual core…with AMD 6870 graphics and a nuclear battery. Oh and a video camera that we can shoot 4k video on. Come on now you phone makers get with it!

  • Quad band radio doesn’t mention CDMA. Just says LTE – which is data only.

    It’s a shoop…

  • If it does all pan out like this, it will immediatly become my 4th phone.
but im not gonna get my hopes up, I just really dont believe it.

  • Maybe it has the MSM8660, which is most certainly dual-core, and would enable the Thunderbolt to have global capability. Since the 8660 was announced on June 1, I think this could possibly have enough time to get out there.

  • Sure sounds fake to me. I mean, where do you go from here if it’s true? I sure would like to be wrong though! If I am this will be my next phone & finally a worthy replacement for my DInc.

  • Dammit. I was just excited about the prospect of getting a 4.3″ Verizon phone that didn’t run MotoUggghhh

  • Going based on this rumor alone, I’d say the price would be somewhere about… oh, $1K-$1200USD with no contract (given the amazing jump in specs from current tech to this).

    That being said… in for 3. =D

  • Please, oh please let this all be true…I’d love to snag this beasty ass, spec’d out, monster of an effin phone come February when im due my upgrade. I tell ya, I’d do bad things to good people to have a phone like this 😉

  • I was stationed in Germany back in the early 90’s to the mid 90’s and thier TV commercial advertising is well ahead of ours. This is a someone ‘s wet dream of a new phone lol. If it’s true I will join the Circus 😛

  • for all you saying the specs are to good to be true, we have seen lots of phones overclocked to above 1ghz.

“Oh and then there’s that dual-core Snapdragon…you know, the chip that Qualcomm just announced a month ago? I guess it’s ready for prime time!” this may have only been announced last month, but i do remember seeing either here or at android forums, that some of those snapdragon processors shipped out back in like june or thereabouts.

the 128gb number seems high but hey, who says they are not looking forward to affordable high capacity micro sd sometime soon. the 5mp front cam also seems high but really, i mean we see these leapfroging tech and quality improvements all the time.

i hope to got this is a legit add and that this is the phone we are waiting for at ces next week. cuz if so, i found my og droid killer.

    • Dude, we just got 32gb chips where not just going to make the leap to 128, that would make no sense on HTC’s part just wasting money on chips that aren’t going to be out for a couple of years when most people have a new phone already. And the 5MP front camera that’s not even in the ballpark, do you see how tiny the front camera is, the 8 on the back is probably right though. And yes Snapdragons have shipped a while ago but not dual core they were announced a couple of months ago. They aren’t even close to production ready and for something that is supposed to sell by the millions it wouldn’t be ready til 2012. I hope you weren’t serious cause I to hope for it but I live in a land of reality and that’s just not happening

      • nope, the report i am talking about, specified dual core chips. i wish i knew exactly where i read it, but it was on this site or android forums. it has stuck in my mind since then because that became my benchmark for a new phone when i replace my droid.

        • just read this on pocketnow.com

Currently, microSD cards have a maximum capacity of 32GB as this is a limitation imposed by version 2 of the SD Specifications: “High Capacity SD Memory Card: More than 2GB (This version of specification limits capacity up to and including 32GB)”.

Don’t worry, there’s a new standard coming soon, called (micro)SDXC – XC stands for Extra Capacity while HC is for High Capacity, which also has its limitations: 2TB. The upcoming (micro)SDXC cards will have a storage space between 32GB and 2TB. As far as speed is concerned, they will be labeled UHS (Ultra High Speed), “the fastest performance category available today, defines bus-interface speeds up to 104 Megabytes per second for greater device performance in SDXC and SDHC host products”.

Now, tell us, what would you store on a 2TB microSDXC card in your Device?

  • It seems every flagship android phones gets its specs exaggerated right before official announcement.
This does have all the markings of a hoax.

  • If those are real, we can say hello to the new big kid on the block. Goodbye Nexus S, iPhone 4, Evo 4G, Epic 4G, and myTouch 4G, we barely knew ya.

    • Seriously, this is just not right as it has been pointed out. We are going to be lucky to see a phone with this kind of spec 12 months from now! Here’a also an article that analyses MSM8960 – http://bit.ly/aFSS1D .

      • No way they would come out with a phone like this within 30 days of Christmas. Everybody that purchased a phone within 30 days would return it to get this.

      • A 5mp front facing camera? To costly for the phone…Is there even an sd card that freakin’ big?! Do they mean standard, not micro sd?

        • The component price difference between a 5MP camera sensor and an 8MP camera sensor is probably only a couple of dollars anyway.

Also… as more cameras are now using 8MP cameras… there are probably a lot of older 5MP sensors left over!

I welcome a better front-facing camera. Not only for video-chat… but also for taking self portraits or a picture of yourself with someone else.

  • I doubt the validity…but one can hope. It might keep me from migrating back to WP7. I demoed the WP7 phones tonight – the interface is sick. Far better than anything else out right now.

  • Sounds nice. Don’t think its real though….no manufacturer would put all that in one package. Too awesome. Now they just have to get Sense off of there…..

  • I’d order 3 of these as soon as they were available. I would give VZW a blank check and they can write any amount they want on it if this was true.

      • it wouldnt be that much i mean remember they arent made in america so the labor is cheaper and would cost probably around 600 off contract
