  • this morning’s android 2.1 ota update droid rumors

what’s better on a monday morning that some android 2.1 ota update rumors?  our “end of the week” has come and gone and motorola has left us with nothing except this timeline which uses the buzzword of the month, “soon” in glorious fashion.  many have lost hope and have also moved on from even thinking about the update, but there are still a few running wild with rumors, speculation and fuel for this fire we refuse to put out.  enjoy…

droidforums.net member on flash coming with 2.1…

First time poster, long time reader. I do contract work for Verizon every so often. Today while working I asked the manager about 2.1. Was informed that the update will roll out the end of the month WITH FLASH! He said the inclusion of flash was the reason for the delay. By now I know not to get too excited but it makes sense and the guy seemed to know what he was talking about.

droid life reader larry with confirmation for today…

So I went to Verizon this morning in reference to a jbl speaker that busted on me anyway I asked an employee about 2.1 for Droid and he said it will come out today and Droid Eris will be shortly after the Verizon store I went to is in Vidalia,GA

and finally, a forum dweller who is living in rooted la-la land…

I’m over it and I know most of you are too. 2.1 is over rated and missing some key features that all of the custom ROM’s already have. For those of you wanting 2.1, do yourself a favor and install a custom ROM. There are a few out there but I’m running sholes, and others have had good luck with BB.

So post up why you wont’ use 2.1 even when verizon finally pushes it out to the few phones out there that are un rooted.

the few phones out there that are un-rooted?  you mean the 2,499,900 that are un-rooted?  anyway, this is likely our last rumor post as the speculation has gotten a little out of hand.  if we have official news, we’ll definitely have it for you, but at this time we’ll be moving back into our regular programming.

    with that said…stay tuned!

    Cheers Chad!

  • nexus one / sense ui style 2.1 launcher for motorola droid

while we continue to wait for android 2.1 to be sent from verizon over to our droid devices, we have another launcher for you to play with and kill some time.  this new launcher is essentially the nexus one 2.1 launcher we posted before but has the look of htc’s sense ui.  the creators (xeodoxus) have also fixed a couple of the bugs, made it run a little smoother and overall made it feel just a little more stable.

    check it…

update:  after doing the video, i realized that you can long press and get your 5 mini-cards for shortcuts to screens.  if you long press on the browser or phone buttons, you will get these.

update 2:  after more testing we’re running into some of the same force closes as the previous launcher.  we also have a report of a phone unable to restart after installing this launcher.  please install at your own risk.

    instructions for installation…

    1.  go into settings -> applications and check the “unknown sources” box.
    2.  visit this post from your phone’s browser.
    3.  tap and download this file onto your phone:  Launcher2-app.apk   (alt link)
    4.  tap on the downloaded application once it has finished.
    5.  install it and tap your “home” button when installation has completed.
    6.  you can check “default” and then select “launcher” to set it.

    (cheers once again alldroid.org)

the rest of the android 2.1 apps you need:

    1.  nexus one / sense ui launcher
    2.  new eclair gallery with multi-touch
    3.  genie news and weather 2.1
    4.  launcher 2.1
    5.  music app 2.1
    6.  clock app 2.1
    7.  flan gallery 2.1

  • verizon’s droid page says "new" software update?

update 6:27pm:  reports coming in from numerous droid users that this has been on the site since december and is likely just referring to the 2.0.1 update.  i guess anything gets us excited these days.  apologies for the false hope!
    ______________________________________________
after seeing the release that went out to employees of verizon on the 2.1 ota update and now seeing this, you have to figure we should see our motorola droid notification to upgrade at any time.

here is a zoomed in version…

the link to the software update only takes you to the old 2.0.1 update page, but you can definitely feel the heat.

And if anyone can find out if that has been saying “new” since the 2.0.1 release, I’d love to know.  I cached it back to 2/10 and it was still there.  has this been there all along?

    Cheers @davidtaylorjr!

  • verizon employees told droid update "coming soon"

i was hoping to not stir up the rumor mill again, but this seems actually worth reporting on.  android central received a release that went out to verizon wireless employees today telling them to prepare for the android 2.1 update…

to back this up, i talked with another motorola rep this morning who confirmed that the ota update will come from verizon and not motorola as many have suggested.  does this really give us any sort of timeline?  obviously not but releasing the update to verizon is the final step before we all receive it.

a PR contact of ours at verizon also chimed in with this…

Coming soon is OK. The DROID over-the-air software upgrade is expected to roll out soon.

    stay tuned!

  • handmark brings 2010 winter olympics to android

app developer handmark, of tweetcaster fame, has released a free 2010 winter olympics app that should provide a great way to keep you on top of the snowless games.  opening ceremony is tonight and by tomorrow we should be in full swing of everything from curling to hockey.  who’s not ready for some fake snow and 53 degree weather action!

this app actually looks like it could be useful unlike many of the other hundred or so olympics applications.  it has a drawer function reminiscent of the app drawer on your home screen which gives you options to check out live happenings, pictures of the day, champions, quotes and any other words on the street.  not bad actually.

as long as they can stay current with coverage, photos and news, i might actually use this little guy.

  • still no motorola droid 2.1 update

today marks the first day of the end of the week, the same end of the week we were expecting updates of android 2.1 to be rolling out to our motorola droid devices. where are we with that? still stuck in limbo. still stuck with questions and no answers. still stuck with many frustrations.

here is what we do know…

    • after a botched january 24th date from verizon, we could only speculate on our next ota update.
    • then surprisingly on february 8th, we received notice from the “official” motorola facebook page that the 2.1 update would roll out to our phones sometime “this week.”
    • rumors started to fly that wednesday, february 10th would be day 1 of rollout.
    • on wednesday the 8th, our dreams were in sight as the release notes for android 2.1 surfaced on the motorola website.
    • 2 hours and 100 blogs posting the link later, the notes were gone and the world turned upside down.
    • there were phones calls to motorola which received answers of “it should be rolling out anytime” to “we have no timeframe” to “no it’s not coming.”
    • live chat conversations with moto reps who gave us mixed news.
    • the official motorola twitter account has now gone silent.  their facebook page has been filled with hatred and silence.  now all we have is as a source for updates.
    • from an email response via their support department that i received this morning i can tell you that we are stuck in the same place as yesterday…with no answers.

to see a company as large as motorola put out official releases, retract them, and then go into silence is a little alarming.  now, i’m sure that the population of droid users that are obsessing over this update like we are is some tiny percentage, but to see the online uproar it has created over the last few days should be enough to generate some sort of response from them other than “we have no official information.”  the worst thing anyone or anything can do in a time of, well for lack of a better word, “crisis,” is to go silent.  just ask one really famous golfer how that tactic worked out.

on a side note, to those of you spreading hatred like your life depends on a system update to your cell phone of all things is pretty disgusting to see.  in no way does this impact your life other than something as simplistic as the opportunity to tell your friends your phone is better than theirs.  i know we have egos, and i know we  were led to believe one thing, but why the hate?  this is still a leading piece of technology and in time we will have an update that is hopefully far more polished than anything we could have expected.  everyone just relax.  your frustrations are understood, but please, lets all take a deep breath and leave the puerile venting to ourselves.

sorry to go all deep on a friday, just needed a release.  as we have any other relevant info, we’ll be sure to have it for you.

  • our chat conversation with a motorola rep on the 2.1 update

we are still digging as hard as we can to find out details about the supposed upcoming android 2.1 release to our motorola droid with our latest step as an attempt to swindle a motorola rep.  we had minor success.  our conversation started out slow but ended fairly well i think.  check it…

Leandro P.: Hi, my name is Leandro P.. How may I help you?
    KELLEN: Hey Leandro
KELLEN: I have a DROID and was wondering if the 2.1 update would start today or tomorrow?
Leandro P.: Let me help you with this
Leandro P.: There will be an update to 2.1 coming soon. But we do not have a date yes. You can periodically check on  for updates.
KELLEN: I’ll have to check that. One other thing, when you guys announced it would be this week, has that date now changed?
Leandro P.: It did not change, because we do not have a date. I am not aware of any official information that would tell us that it would be launched this week.
KELLEN: Oh, I just saw on your official Facebook page earlier this week that said the 2.1 update for DROID would be out this week. Was that not right?
Leandro P.: I can not confirm that. All I can tell you is that it is coming soon.
KELLEN: We’re just really excited about the update!
Leandro P.: Yes, and Motorola is aware of that. You will see the updates on that site that I provided.
KELLEN: Update is there now? 🙂 OK I’ll keep checking back. Thanks for your help.
Leandro P.: You will have to periodically check to see the news.
    Leandro P.: You are welcome
KELLEN: So when should I check back?
Leandro P.: It would be good to check every day
KELLEN: So that must mean it’s coming really soon? 🙂
Leandro P.: It is coming really soon.
KELLEN: You’ve been a great sport. Have a great day.
Leandro P.: You have a great day too, thanks.

as you can see, he didn’t necessarily give me an exact day, but he said you should be checking back almost daily for updates and the “coming really soon” part should at least help you crack a mini-smile.

you can continue to check out our running rumor list here.
