Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I tried it. It worked quicker than google maps and took me on better routes than Google did. Also, it requires fewer clicks to actually get the directions. I’m a convert.

  • I deleted the app because it automatically closed the app when it was interrupted by phone call or trying to run another app. NO GOOD

    • TomTom was the first gps solution I fell in love with on my old Palm TX with that hockey puck receiver. I used that from Illinois to Florida with no problems. It was super cool to be the only one at the time to have a portable unit (back then those gps units were $1000). Android is gaining so much popularity over (I dare not say it’s name) and I have that gut feeling it’s getting close to release. People are beginning to see that Android has true potential.

  • Props for an all Lego QR Code. If only the table could’ve broken right when they stuck the last one on…

    • Agreed!
MapQuest ALWAYS has a tendency to send me on the longest routes possible!
      Not a fan.
      Google Maps FTW!

  • The biggest problem I see with Mapquest is that their data and maps are wayyyy behind in updates and have so many incorrect entries that it makes it almost useless. Guess you get what you pay for!

  • Mapquest kicks ass, they almost always have a marginally faster route than google. In hichhiking races, they use the mapquest time as the benchmark, its almost impossible to beat.

  • easier than googles. makes more sense to use and everything is right there. no guessing like google maps

  • Mapquest? did they say Mapquest? BWA HA HAAA HA HAA.. yeah Mapquest

    right.

    that is so 90’s

    • if you value getting where you want to go, then you’ll see the problem with it

I mean, it’s Mapquest.. when were they ever reliable?

  • things i need in a GPS app:

1 – maps that work in the US and Canada. (i guess this would mean offline maps, since i have no data access in Canada. anyone know if a GPS satellite can find me without data?)

2 – the app should run from the SD card.

    3 – free map updates

    everything else is just gravy.

  • There’s only one feature that might tempt me away from Google Maps but Mapquest ain’t got it. I want customisable and celebrity voice guides. My old Palm Treo let me choose from Mr. T. “Turn left fool!, Kim Farrell “You have reached your destination, oooh! “, Arnold Scwarzenneger “Turn right if you want to live”, Gary Busey, Sean Connery, or even use my own voice.

  • I used to use Mapquest before I had an Android phone, but with Google Maps, no need for it anymore.

  • Another free tool in the toolbox. In case Google Nav is messed up from an experimental rom or whatever, then maybe this will work in the meantime. And, it’s Free!

  • Supposedly, their navigation works in some countries where Google navigation doesn’t work. I haven’t tested this yet, though.

  • WOW, this is awesome. MapQuest is a great service, and now their on Android. Will definitely give it a try today maybe and see if it’s just as awesome, if not better, than Google’s Navigation…but that’s pretty doubtful. I don’t think anything in the Market can stand up against the Titan that is Google Nav!

    • GM does when you use the map without using the Nav. for instance when you open the map and get your location using GPS your dot shows up on the map and while you are driving look towards the bottom left corner it shows you your mph plus the direction you are headed 🙂

but yes it does not show when you are using the Nav, which would be nice.
