  • Motorola is going to srew themselves without the wi-fi model being released. Apple is releasing the wi-fi iPad at the same time as their expensive model, and I think some people may just buy the iPad 2 wi-fi model because of the greed of Motorola. This is rediculas! I will never buy these damn carrier prodicts – why the hell are these companies making these bad decisions? Greed is all I can determine.

  • Actually no, Verizon was the one who the mandatory activations had come down from, and the ones who made the decision that would be discontinued.

  • Costco was adamant on a data package despite my desire to buy the device at full retail.

    While they will refund the activation on all XOOM purchases (yay!) via mail-in rebate (sigh), you still need to pay for at least one month’s data off-contract.

    I should have offered to sleep with them. It wouldn’t be nearly as bad as enabling bad business practices.

    VZW, Best Buy, and Motorola online store don’t give a shit, though. You can grab a XOOM box, drop $800 + tax, and leave. They may insist on it being cheaper if you get into a two-year contract, until they whip out a calculator and have it pop up $480 minimum (for a $600 device that’s going to be obsolete in less than 1.5 years), but otherwise you can still get the device without any bullshit and activate if and when you want.

  • bought it. love it. it’s definitely awesome. accessory wise i only went with the screen protector. i’m going to handle the device for a week before deciding which accessories I really need. the keyboard is tempting as is the stand. I definitely should get a case for it though.

    overall impressions…it’s definitely fast. it automatically synced all my apps. i had to uninstall a few apps that are not compatible with xoom as of yet. the cnn app specifically made for this tablet is beyond awesome. both twitter and fb do not render well on this device and im hoping for an update soon. angry birds plays very well on the device and the widgets are nice. the android market displays tablet specific apps and there’s maybe 10-12 so far.

    I can’t wait for flash…i showed this to my coworker who has the ipad and they are completely jealous.

  • Another thing is that its impossible to sign up for MyVerizon if the Xoom is the only device on the contract since it sends a temporary password via txt message.

  • Just went to check it out but I didn’t buy one. It was definitely tempting. Very compelling device. The best buy I went to in chicago said they only had one left at 3:30

  • Now if they get Eclipse and the Android development kit working on it, than maybe. Anything that costs as much as a high level laptop should also be able to perform software development duties.

  • Mine arrives tomorrow. I use a Samsung Tab now at work and I use it all the time. The larger screen and faster proc will be well worth the price. For actual productivity and not just play/movies/etc, it will be great! Keyboard and case will be here from Amazon the following day (Verizon’s discount system online was broke…)

  • Oh.. I thought they launched with a wi-fi only Xoom?! Well there totally goes my interest in buying one, if you don’t have to get a contact then what does the phone run off of? Does it not have wi-fi capability? I’m really confused?

  • Walked across the street at lunch to a Verizon store and played with one for a while; cool but NOT $800 cool…

  • Interesting note. I let them sweet talk me about the data plan and ended up refusing it. Finally I agreed to 1 month of service, if they dropped the activation fee. But then as they rang up my Xoom, case, and screen protectors, the total came out to just over $700. So either the new verizon employee that rang me up, messed up and gave me the subscription price, or they signed me up for a 2 year subscription without me knowing. I’ve checked the receipt and it mentions month-to-month that ends after the next full month of service.

  • I keep pinging @motorola every couple days to see if they’ll spill the deets on the wifi XOOM. Think I might opt for a Nook Color to tide me over with Honeycomb till then.

  • i just got back from the verizon store played with it for 20 minutes or so, and gotta say i dont think it is worth the 600 to 800 bucks plus accessories and taxes. i think the most i would pay for one 400. dont get me wrong the xoom is fun and entertaining, but i can pretty much do all of that on my phone. big bust for me : /

  • Just left the Verizon store and on the way home. Wifi only running off my rooted Droid X’ no problems. This tablet is sweet…

  • If u do get a month to month with Verizon, you cant even access your account because they cant send you out a text with your password and they have to send it to you by mail. I was pissed, there is always something with Verizon
