Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Whatever…Gingergread…Smingerbread……..the Thunderbolt is the worst phone I have ever owned. I bought an extened life battery and it still drains it in 7 hours. I downloaded the LTE toggle app and app killer. This phone is worthless. Speed doesn’t mean anything if your battery is dead. Also, two times on vacation this year this phone cost me thousands of dollars because the reception was so bad. I had zero bars and my wifes Droid x had consistantly 3-4 bars. Also the phone is heavy and not easy to handle. By the way who was the wizard that put the charging port on the same side that touches the ground when you have the kick stand down!!!! Battery dead and you cannot plug in the charger to  watch a damn movie. Verizon is sending me a new Droid x 2.
    Good riddance!!!!

  • So besides the quick settings… has anyone found a reason to flash this other than its shiny and new?

  •  you also lose the glowing green at the top during a phone call, which for whatever reason, I sorta like…

  • I and my buddies were found to be checking the great techniques located on the blog then unexpectedly I had a horrible feeling I never thanked the web site owner for those strategies. My young men came as a result excited to see them and have actually been using these things. Many thanks for being so thoughtful as well as for obtaining varieties of perfect subject areas millions of individuals are really desirous to learn about. My very own honest regret for not expressing appreciation to sooner.

*Drops the mic and walks off stage*

  • also.. has the Wi-Fi always been b/g/n? I’m kinda going through this to see what changes abound. lol

  • so.. this ROM told me to “insert SIM” to make calls.. is that normal? lol

  •  not impressed enough about gingerbread to give up my built in camera for a broken built in camera. i can wait

    •  Agree I am going to wait until a more finished build arises or verizon actually releases the official ota.

  •  Kellex try to see if netflix works on this GB build for the thunderbolt. Let us know what you find.

  • god, i just want a vertical battery status indicator and the gingerbread lock screen animation. i hope that comes in the final build

  • Eh. I hope there are some behind the scenes advantages because that really looks like some lame advancements to Sense. I’m not really a fan of social updates under the clock, its too intrusive and reminds me of Motorola. Categorized apps doesn’t really excite me and the slow scroll would be annoying. The only good thing is the Quick Settings in the Notifications, but you can just have a widget for that.

Well, my minds made up. ROM it is. Either Bamf, a Debloated Sense or I would really love some Pure Vanilla. Mmmmmm

    • Gingerbread itself was more about behind the scenes changes, and not so much visual things. That and Sense 2.1 is only .1 higher than what you had, so it’s not like that is a big change in itself.

      • Yeah, thats very true, it is a small increment. I’d be interested to see what those behinds the scenes do for the user experience over a period of time. As far as stability, performance, optimization and things such as that.

    • I agree … The social updates thing only shows one update at a time – so not really useful for me.  The categorized apps is nice, but not really a big deal (all the apps I use are already on screen, so I rarely go into that screen anyways) – and even if I did, the slow scroll would get old pretty quickly.  I do like the quick settings – but I’ve already been using the “Quick Settings” app from the market which gives me effectively the same notification bar functionality.

If this is all that the update brings, it’s not selling me on getting it.  Rooting and finding a good quality ROM is sounding better and better.  Had wanted to go a while linger before doing that … but not seeing any value in waiting any longer.

      • Agreed on that. Rooting and ROM it is. I just haven’t found a good walkthru thus far. The only one I came across was on Android Police I believe, but it was for the lengthy rooting option. I’ve yet to find instructions for an easy root that make me feel comfortable doing.

        •  i did the easy root poseted on here, http://www.dev.droid-life.com/2011/03/23/htc-thunderbolt-easyroot-s-off-released/

if you follow the instruction you can’t mess up, very clear…just be warned, you’ll lose all your apps and data

        • Android central forum a has a great write up for both windows ans mac step by step with pics it was very easy.

  • Nothing hear that excites me when I’m running das BAMF 1.6.3 remix. I’ll wait for the gingerbread remix!

    •  i had terrible battery life, after i didnt get the ota update i got impatient, so i rooted, loaded BAMF remix 1.6.3, overclocked to 1.45 Ghz, get at least 10 hours with HEAVY use

      • I’m sitting at 40% battery left.  My phone has been unplugged for 2d 9hr 46m.  I’d say some the roms/kernels have decent life.

        • Wow that’s starting to sound like my battery time on my xoom. Its amazing what a few tweaks to a kernel can do. Got to love the Devs!!!

    •  For what it’s worth, my Bolt will last 20+hrs on standby in 4G territory.  But I’m not a heavy user, I use my phone for about 3-4 hrs a day, mostly in a single session.

  • They built that beautiful quick settings menu in the notification drop-down, but they couldn’t add in an LTE toggle? Seriously?

    • If the community has anything to say about it, I’m sure one will be added for those who aren’t scared enough to flash it. A 4G toggle stock would definitely not hurt though.
