Getting this ASAP – I’m a gamer and I’m not ashamed of it…emulators will be enough for me for awhile, but if something outstanding comes out, nothing will beat playing it with a true controller. There is a niche market for this phone of course, but at least its being served by someone, right?
its hard to look at this phone as anything BUT a gaming device but all gaming points aside the fact that its running stock gingerbread is great! motorola should take note and stop pretty much everything they are doing
I’m sure it may look like stock Gingerbread, but in reality I’m sure there are some customizations deep inside to support the gamepad drivers, gaming DRM etc. I’ll wait for a dev to dig deep inside before calling it true vanilla Gingerbread. I’m sure Sony didn’t make it easy to simply rip the gaming platform out of the phone, which vanilla Gingerbread would allow, even if gamepad support had to be replaced with keyboard commands.
Off Contract Price? Just wanting to see if Big Red is sticking with those lower prices we saw earlier this year.
Can’t believe a damn controller gets gingerbread…
3g and not 4g…. And this is supposed to be a gaming device. Obviously not an online gaming device. Android has a perfect opportunity to surpass ios in gaming. And they can do this with online gaming. Sadly the only online game I’ve seen so far is link 4 (connect 4) by playmesh
Still no news on the lg revolution? That’s the phone I want.
the #1 question will be is…..will the battery be able to handle this?
This phone only has a single-core Snapdragon processor and the screen is very poor. It is dimmish with marginal contrast even at the highest setting and in “normal” outdoor light is almost impossible to see compared to other phones. Battery also isn’t that great and the phone won’t last 24 hours with light use. It’s outdated before it’s even released, short of the gaming pad and stereo speakers. There are enough games in the android market, and psx4droid will run dumped psx games (that you own!) better than this can run them if you get a dual-core device.
Not to mention, many of you are screaming for vanilla Android, of which this definitely is not. In fact, with all the customizations that Sony had to do to get this stuff running on Android, it will be very difficult or not even possible to run custom roms on this even if it doesn’t have a locked bootloader.
I originally really wanted this phone when I heard it announced. I have a PSP Go and love it. The form factor is awesome. The more I thought about it, though, and with recently released / soon to come phones, even the hardcore gamer in me couldn’t legitimize getting this phone now. Common sense also kicked in that first and foremost this would be my communication device, and I’d rather have a slide-out keyboard than the gaming pad.
I’m going to pre-order one!!!
So excited 🙂 Taking my Droid Charge back and I am getting this phone!!
Passing on this…Looks cool though, if you are still in high school.
This phone would be a contender if it had a little more muscle. I just can’t bring myself to sign Verizon’s 2 year blood contract for a single core device.
Also, no LTE.
Does anybody know the full retail price? Thanks 😉
Does this phone have hdmi port?
I have tried it… it is a very cool phone. It has several good games pre-installed… SIMS 3, Crash Bandicoot, etc…
Uh… no.
that is cool it will have stock GB on it and not some krap sony skin slapped on top.
I’d have to see it in Action, it would definitely be an upgrade from my OG Droid.
A PSP AND a phone in one? Sign me up! oh wait. I’m not 16 anymore lol. I now blast emails with my qwerty, not dragons with my d-pad.
I have a 17yr old that’s due for a new device in June. I wonder if he’d like this? Seems like a good piece of gear from my research. I know he play’s the hell outta Madden11.
I get a phone to be used as a phone. I have a xbox 360 to play games like that on not a tiny 4 inch screen. I think this will be a good seller I just don’t see the point with psp’s and all that out why anyone would want a phone like this unless they are getting it solely to play games on and phone functionality comes second.

for most gamers I know, phone capability comes in at a distant second, if at all. They prefer the type of communication that invovles a headset and yelling “headshot” 😛
i wanted this but they waited too long to release it. i had to get a new phone back in Feb…sigh. oh well maybe in 2 years i can get the Sony Xpheria Play 5 😉
If that slideout gamepad were replaced with a slideout keyboard, I would actually probably get this.
…… the main selling point of the phone is the gamepad, this comment shouldn’t even be acknowledged…….
Just an opinion, does that make you upset?
Funk yeah.
But not as upset as you showing off your rank to a tech site.
The only thing I use my slide out keyboard for is my Game Gripper. So yeah, I vote gamepad.
yeah, i’ll wait until this comes out in a dual-core version. then i’m all over it. otherwise, this has great specs (and by great specs i mean VANILLA GB!!!!)
For a “gaming” phone you would’ve thought this would have had a Tegra 2 or other dual core processor.
this is the link with all the info on the phone you guys are asking about. http://developer.verizon.com/play http://developer.verizon.com/play
at this point i might get this just for stock gingerbread…
Tempted but I’ll wait for the second coming.
It needs more internal memory for apps! Only 400mb!? I came from an incredible and got a VZW Play from I/O and my app storage is already full and all the apps that can be on my SD card are there. Other than that, battery life is better than my Incredible (w/ the Dinc using a 1750mA battery), 4″ display is gorgeous, and loving the game controls. It’s a little bulky but very sturdy and comfortable. Other than the storage and the notification light being on the unlock button, love the phone! Waiting for 2.3.4 for gtalk w/ voice!
Forgot to mention, stock gingerbread = amazing. No skin to slow the phone down!
Please tell me you’ve put a PS emulator on this… would the game pad buttons be mapable to control an emulator like PSXfordroid?
From what I have read, that is the case.
Not me. Sony is too hackable.
Isn’t.. that.. a good thing for us?
I think he’s talking about the PSN service which was not a good situation. But unlocked bootloaders are good 🙂
Not when you lose all of your personal data including credit card info… still pretty upset over the whole psn debacle.
Shit happens. I work in IT security and a cyber attack can happen on anyone if the attackers know what they are doing and want it bad enough. Nothing is ever completely 100% secure.
I do similar work. Whenever people as me “How can I make my computer the safest possible?”; I tell them “The safest computer is one that is not connected to the internet and turned off.”
ask*
thats why theres an “Edit” button
There’s an edit button?
although you guys are correct, the security vulnerability was something Sony knew about for a LONG time and didn’t do anything about it. overall the safest network is one that is “up to date”
Sort of like a lot of the security issues with android that only the nexus phones got a patch to?
There were reports stating they did have up to date servers. This is the internet we cant believe everything thats posted. thats posted.
this is so temping
Next Gen or previous Gen snapdragon?
Haven’t confirmed, but guessing it’s the same Snapdragon that’s in the TBolt.
it has the Adreno 205 GPU so its second gen
