Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Just walked out of verizon looking to see if the lte battery would fit my gsm galaxy nexus. No go. Batteries are completely different. Also my gsm battery cover will not fit the lte galaxy nexus. I they did that on purpose

  • damn verizon branding.. i would’ve imported the extended battery and cover but i hate this branded crapness.. i’m gonna wait till the device hits south korea at retail and then import my battery and cover.

  • just noticed the verizon site has the glitch again where when you go to vzw.com/galaxynexus it goes to shop.verizonwireless.com with some variation of galaxy nexus after that(it switches too fast to copy) before switching permanently to the gnex signup page…wonder if they are getting ready for something lol(probably just getting my hopes up but maybe)

  • First thing i’m going to do when I get this phone is go into a verizon store and ask if they have a cover that says google instead of verizon. 😀

    • Dude, the logo is on the back. It’s just logo. The Google logo is on my old HTC Hero. That phone was a POS. Don’t obsess over a logo : )

  • I rather have the extra battery with the battery charger for the same price and double the power

  • Hate to be “that guy” but I went to 2 Verizons tonight, and both told me the 15th isn’t looking good anymore. Of course I realize these guys don’t know any more than we do, they just said they haven’t heard anything, which makes it highly unlikely it’ll release in 3 days. I just want this damn phone already 🙁

    • I came here to post the same thing.  I went to my local store tonight to score the extended battery, which I did, before they get snapped up on release day.

However, I will say that while the sales dude said they know nothing and the phone is not in their inventory system, he looked surprised and laughed nervously when I said “why do you have a bunch in the back, then?”  He said he couldn’t say anything about that, but he claimed there has been no word at all about a release this week.

Two comments about the new battery cover: it’s smaller and much more slippery than I thought it would be.  I had sort of prepared myself for the worst case on size, thinking it would be huge.  And, the thing is slippery enough that I’m thinking I’ll need to get a case for it, because I do not want to drop my future nexus due to this slippery back.

    • Costco here knew nothing about it tonight as well, said they hadn’t been told anything about the 15th and didn’t even have the phones or any materials yet.

    • Called and store near me, said that the same thing. How much do you want to bet the droid 4 is out before this thing.

    • STOP IT…..JUST STOP IT…..were going to stay positive for the next two/three days…so just settle down now

  • Still getting the battery charging dock with the extra battery. Getting a second battery you have to have in the phone to charge is pointless imo. Not only do you have to plug the phone in twice as long but you can’t effectively use it at the same time. 1850 * 2 = 3700 and never having to plug phone into a charger is the best deal in my opinion. Unless you go threw two batteries in one day without being able to charge the the used battery after putting the fresh one in is the only reason you would have to plug the phone in to charge a battery. *DING DING DING WINNER*

  • Camera looks a bit odd with it, like they didn’t make the back piece curve in to mold closer to the camera.

  • Keep us posted. Wouldn’t hurt to try. My local Verizon store reps aren’t being helpful.

  • Think I’ll just buy the spare battery with dual charger. Doesn’t bother me to carry on a day I might need that extra. Better deal imho.

  • The battery connectors for the LTE are on the right, the connectors on the GSM are on the left. The batteries may be reversible, leading the LTE battery to be used on the GSM unit, but the NFC antenna is built into the battery, so that may affect the NFC from functioning. Without having a LTE version, this is pure conjecture though.

  • Everytime I look at the droid life header I see Galaxy nexus now I cant even study for finals. That means im gonna fail all my classes because verizon wouldnt give me a date. which is going to cause me to stay in college forever causing me to lose lots of money. Therefore leading to me cancelling my Verizon service because I cant afford the bills anymore and I will never get my engineering degree.

  • NEXXXUUSSSSSSS….all of this is killing me.  Wonder if the verizon associates where I’m at are dumb enough (or cool enough) to sell me one tomorrow.  Looks like I’ll be making some calls.

  • Why buy this when an additional battery and charging station are probably the same cost but double your battery life instead of only adding an hour?

      • not all of us feel like lugging around a battery all day in our pockets… my other pockets for my wallet, keys… 🙂 rather have more charge than have to change it to…

        • For me it’s all about convenience and bang for your buck – five second swap after work for a full battery on Friday night, or wait for your phone to finish charging and show up late to the party? =]

          • Don’t matter because I am never late to the party. Seems like the party always just gets good right around the time i get there. But that’s mostly because I rock a GN LTE. and a really big cock. that’s why i have all the ifan’s hitting on me, guys and girls!

      • Can’t argue with the implementation here tho.. +1 to Samsung for the design. I was able to get my hands on one of these at a VZW store.. Quite the beauty to behold. Slimmer than it looks in pics, barely wider and 1/3″ taller than my Droid X. ICS was so smooth. Hoping VZW makes this Thursday THE day!

    • Its not like you won’t have two batteries if you get the extended battery.
Buying the extended battery fits my use case better. I prefer to have a larger primary battery that I would rarely have to switch out for a second battery. As such, I won’t need a dedicated charger because it should be seldom that I actually have to charge it.

      • You’ll have two batteries yes, but only one “charger.” As far as seldom having to charge it.. This will add an hour onto your usage time, not half a day. Just sayin’.

  • Next mission, finding a unbranded extended battery cover… preferably one that gives credit to Google.

  • glad you pointed that out, because the international version (I know it’s not LTE) is getting high marks on the battery.  i’ve heard as high as 28 hours.  most are getting 16-17 hours with some remaining at the end of the day.

  • glad you pointed that out, because the international version (I know it’s not LTE) is getting high marks on the battery.  i’ve heard as high as 28 hours.  most are getting 16-17 hours with some remaining at the end of the day.

  • Ok i understand that this is a Galaxy Nexus commenting section but why arent they talking about the Droid 4 coming out.  Yes GNex is a great phone in all but I want a physical keyboard.  Anyone have any set date or around when the droid 4 is coming out?

  • Believe it or not i bought mine today from a Verizon store that asked that i don’t say where they are located. It was the last one. I don’t have it yet but i should Thursday, yes the 15th! This of course is subject to change. This is no B.S. people! If you search around some stores will pre-sell it. I did check it out and it’s awesome!

  • Just to be sure… All of you who were complaining about the LTE version being .5 mm thicker than the GSM version are the same people talking about putting a monstrous otterbox on this thing, right???

    • no, the battery will extend the compartment to the same level as the camera lens. if you look on the standard model the lens is a little raised. practically no gain in bulk.

  • Sing to Caribbean Queen – Billy Ocean…song was on the radio for some reason as I was reading this post earlier so now stuck in my head…someone shoot me please…

She dashed by me in a plain white box
And all the geeks followed cause it was the dream
In the blink of an eye I would sign on the dotted line, yeah
It was an ice cream sandwhich phone I wanted to tame

    Verizon you goofed
    Now you’re delaying my dream
And my og is about to die
No more blur on my phone

I lose my cool when I see a new release date, mmm…
    And I get so excited when I see a droid-life post, mmm…
On screen software buttons that you cant ignore
Phase beam wallpaper never seen before, mmm…mmm…mmm…

I was in search for a google expierence
Just looking at my phone, yeah
blur was the furthest from my mind

    Verizon you goofed
    Now you’re delaying my dream
And my og is about to die
No more blur on my phone

  • because Verizon is selling all 4G batteries half off in store for December, this one will only be 24.99 in store

    • What is a 4G battery? Does my battery have an LTE chip in it? Do i have to pay for a line of service for my battery as well as the phone? chip in a battery, in a phone with a chip… starting to sound like inception.

  • you start finding it creepy when you dream you are at a best buy store and somebody gives you the galaxy nexus for free. it makes me enjoy my dreams more than real life. thats usually not a good thing.

    • Both the same. All of these were taken within moments of each other. Sorry they’are a little out of focus.

      • really? dam, so basically its like a seido when the stock is 1650 and seido is 1800? if so…ill definitely buy for the little extra juice… but then why does it come with an extra battery door if the same?…value? lol

  • Finding the Nexus is like finding the G-Spot…you know it’s somewhere in the back but they won’t show you where it is

  • Based on my rough calculations(rounded to the nearest quarter hour) you should expect the following with the 2100mAh battery:

~45min longer for heavy users(6 hours with 1850mAh)
~1hr longer for med users(8 hours with 1850mAh)
~1.5hr longer for light users(10 hours with 1850mAh)

    Worth 50 bucks?

    • fahk… no, no its not! wow that really puts it in perspective for me. battery life of 8 hours in 1 day is just so piss poor.

    • Thanks for putting that in perspective. Only reason I was considering it is because of the “slight” difference in thickness but for $50 I’ll stick with stock. I’m not a heavy user anyway.

    • Well most of us were goig to get a second battery anyway though….but if we get this as a second we would have to also carry the back around xD I think I will stick with 2nd stock battery. Also hoping for third party accessories *fingers x’d*

    • Me too! I’m glad it’s not just me. I woke up this morning after dreaming about it, just knowing it was released today. After scanning all the blogs, I went back to sleep to dream. : )

  • Alright gentleman, I can absolutely promise you that these are real pics and videos of the extended battery. I can promise this BC I am the one that took them. I tried getting more in the video but had to be very sneaky BC of a very anal manager who was already cutting the reps with looks for even bringing the phone and the battery out from the back. The manager wasn’t there yesterday when I first saw all of this, but my phone was too dead to take any evidence away with me.

As far as the cases go– I would be very, VERY surprised if the the phone (with the extended battery) would be too large to fit anything. The car dock, the portrait and landscape docks, the otterbox– all should definitely be usable with the extended battery. Its so slim that at first they put the wrong back plate in the box with the extended battery. If I hadn’t told him he was doing it he would have never known. You’ll know for sure when you see it yourself, but this is the slickest extended battery I’ve ever seen. Probably BC its the smallest increase in mah’s that ive ever seen.

      • It has a super, super slight raise to it that you can really only notice around the perimeter of the plate (that starts 1-2 millimeters from the perimeter). Honestly, other than a very slight bulge that you can barely see, there’s very little difference. Here come the bulge jokes.

    • So, are you gonna put those things back in the box and sell them as new never opened items? I’ll be buying mine online.

  • I bought one – now I just need a phone to stuff it into.  I worry how it will work with the car and desk docks, though.  If they still work, I’ll be keeping this in all the time.  I bet the boost is worth at least a couple of hours.

Also, I went by my best buy and radioshack stores to see if I could scam them into selling me one, but they were all wise to the “do not sell” notice. They both had them in stock, but no car docks yet. The best buy phone dept manager said Dec 15th, for what it’s worth.

    • Same thing happened to me. I couldn’t walk of the store with it because it wasn’t in their system yet. I do have my name on it and he told me to check back tomorrow 14th. Hopefully this phone will be mine for the taking tomorrow!

    • I had a dream and then i woke up and decided to take advantage of verizons extended return policy and rock the razr for a while until the nexus comes out but this phone is so amazing i may not even get the nexus now. Once all the vanilla ics wears off it truly does come down to who has the better hardware and im not so sure sammie is ready in that department compared to motorola.

      • In specs of hardware Samsung > Motorola.
        In build quality Samsung Gingerbread(Blur).

Getting the Galaxy Nexus but will definitely miss the build quality of my OG Droid.

        • plus doesn’t the razr have the t.I. omap 4430, over clocked to 1.2 and the nexus have a 4460 under clocked at 1.2? One of the first things I want to do when I get my nexus is find an over clocking program that will crank that bad boy up to 1.8 so I can take it to my friends house who has an iPhone. And then pretend I don’t have it over locked and have us run a benchmark for comparison. It will be a good day.

  • I’ve had the double sized extended battery from Seidio on my OG since it came out and I personally don’t mind the bulk at all in exchange for the doubled battery life.  In fact, it makes it easier to hold on to.  The retained form factor here is nice for those who are looking for that and I’ll probably get this extended battery initially, but I hope someone puts out something later in the neighborhood of double the capacity, though preferably still with NFC.

    • You are ABSOLUTELY correct, Seidio extended batteries – usually come in at least double, and sometime triple original mAH – are the very best available. Yes they are bulky, and no I don’t use one all the time, but man is it every nice to have one when you need it.  I have had 6 hour calls and still had battery left at the end of the day.  I do wish they would make better looking covers though.

Who needs a case – all you need is a inward facing clip, and left the massive battery hang out.  A thicker battery really does make it easier to hold. Bring on the 3600…

  • ~ One Galaxy Nexus $299.99
    ~ One Extended Battery $49.99
~ One Otter Box Case $54.99
~ Getting Verizon to Pull Their Heads Out Their Ass and Release the Nexus…..Priceless

  • man i really hope this works with my GSM Galaxy Nexus!

*EDiT* Forget it , it has a Verizon rear shell.. Id rather throw myself from a bridge than put that on my GSM Beauty

    • The extended battery should fit with the stock battery cover, as shown somewhere on the interwebz.

      • could definitely believe this is possible. Might be a tight squeeze, but wouldn’t surprise me at all.

        • as a matter of fact, hopefully they come out with this battery for the GSM version so that Verizon users could buy it and have the piece that says Google, instead. Someone with access to both versions should see if the batteries are compatible with each other.

          • Plus a rom with NO Verizon apps that would be nice to have pure phone that Verizon hasn’t screwed with.

          • im going to stop by the verizon store that sold me my LTE holster case 2 weeks ago (perfect fit on my GSM) and see if he will lets me try the battery and see if it fits..

    • i know that’s what I was hoping they would do. But of course, Verizon makes the money from the accessories. You know they had to slap their name on it.

    • Thing is for that 550 boost it would be a lot thicker, talking 2mm thicker. It would be noticeable.

      • Ya, but if you have 2mm with a curved back it will probably fit in you hand even better. I have the extended battery for the Droid Inc and yes it makes it about 1.75 as thick, but it also more comfortably fits in my hand. Plus, my battery life is almost 2 days with moderate use. I never have thought about that battery life since I bought it!

        • Sounds fair. Just wanted to make sure you didn’t think it would add less than 0.5mm thickness. “Slight increase in thickness” is very subjective when it comes to this kind of stuff.

  • I saw this phone in imaginationland with man-bear-pig. He was half man, half bear and half pig.

      • Assuming you charged it with the phone it will be ready but im not sure i would want to charge two batteries with my phone. Correct me if im wrong but i dont believe this comes with a charging cradle for the battery.

        • 13.5% more usage time than the standard battery. Seriously, it totally depends on your usage. If you get 8 hours on the regular battery, you should get approximately 9 hours, 5 minutes with this.

          • Seems like you usually get about 2 hours extra battery life out of the stock OEM extended batteries. I would just as soon wait for third parties to come out with beefier extended batteries that are 800 mA or more in capacity. I don’t mind a slightly beefy phone as long as it last me a day and a half easy. My Samsung Fascinate is twice as thick with the extended battery I have on it and it’s still very comfortable and lighter than most phones.

  • Hell yeah. I hope they let me try it out in the store before buying it though. It really all depends on how it feels in the hand.

    • Feels great in the hand. I was honestly surprised by the size of the phone in general, but even with the extended battery it is hard to tell any difference just by looking, let alone holding it.

    • Like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like!!!!
