Shockapotomus! Samsung Won’t Debut Galaxy S4 at CES

According to a report out of CNET, Samsung will not unveil the Galaxy S4 at CES, next month. I sincerely hope you do not find this news to be a shocker. We told you yesterday, after Samsung posted their CES teaser video, that you shouldn’t think for a second that we would be seeing the next Galaxy phone, but as expected, some news outlets jumped to wild headline grabbing conclusions. Remember, the Galaxy S3 is still selling like crazy. The Galaxy Note 2 is still brand new and selling like crazy. And Samsung has typically waited until early Summer to announce their new Galaxy phone.

But beyond all of that, Samsung is bigger than CES when it comes to mobile. They’ll show off TVs, maybe a new tablet, and probably something to tie mobile in with those TVs, but that’s it. They’ll have their own press event, probably in April or May to reveal their next big phone.

Kellen

Itโ€™s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but thatโ€™s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I wish they wouldn’t roll phones out so quickly, anyway. You make a two-year commitment, then out comes a new model and you look outdated. That’s one reason I like my Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro — it’s truly different, made for outdoor use like when I’m out on a property search with my real estate clients in Austin. I have it on AT&T’s 4g lte network, too, which means the photos I shoot fly on e-mail.

  • Personally, I’m glad they won’t announce the GS4 so soon. I think the manufacturers should slow down the pace of releasing new devices because the differences are not always enough to justify the expense of buying a new phone and nobody likes feeling their device is obsolete only a few months after buying it. I know it creates motivation for people to buy more but I think most people still buy on a 2 year cycle as they get upgrade credit. If there were fewer devices released each year, the manufacturers could focus more on software updates and the devices they do release could spend more time in the oven, so to speak, so they would be higher quality. Fewer devices would also make development easier for the ROM community and for app developers. I hate to praise Apple for anything but I think they have the right idea in releasing only one iPhone per year.

    • Amen to that. I have a GS3 and am very happy with it, but part of what will determine my future loyalty to Samsung will be the extent to which they continue to support the device with future software updates. They are off to a good start so far, but I agree that it will help things if they stick with the Apple model of one product release/year rather than 2-3. Do one annual release for the S series and one annual release for the Note – anything more is overkill.

    • I SO agree!!! The point about not wanting to feel like your phone is quickly obsolete is the critical one. I just got a new phone from AT&T (on their 4G LTE list, the HTC One X) and, as a graphic designer, really like the style. but if it’s outdated in a year I’m going to look from a professional standpoint behind the times. That sucks.

  • Up vote for “Shockapotomus”.

I would rather wait until the polished Nexus phone is ready than get another Thunderbolt turd. Samsung has proven that can make some really nice products.

    • So you’re waiting for a polished turd, cool. Yes, Samsung has proven they can really market some nice plastic ๐Ÿ™‚

      • I saw a TV at best buy this weekend by Samsung with Motion control built in. It wouldn’t surprise me if they tried to move that success more-so to their other divisions.

    • Same here. They’ll have to pry Unlimited from my cold dead hands. Or at least until the next awesome phone is released.

      • well i will buy the s4 at full price…unless they steal away my unlimited. if that happens i say bye bye to big red. I’m sure many others would be with me there!
