The Samsung Galaxy Gear is receiving a significant update according to Verizon. New support documents from Big Red detail an update that jumps the Gear up to software build V700XXUAMK and introduces all sorts of new performance improvements, while killing off a feature for tinkerers.
The changelog is listed below, but it mentions improvements to battery life, S Voice search, pedometer accuracy, the NFC pairing animation, screen saver turn on time, and the messaging application. Verizon and Samsung also removed the USB Debug menu (wtf?), added support for VZW Messaging, now officially support the official Twitter app, and changed the motion menu. A couple of other bugs in the AlarmManager and Contacts app were squashed as well.
If you are on Verizon and own a Galaxy Gear, be on the lookout for an update coming through your Gear Manager app.
The Gear is a device that’s doesn’t require a stand – alone data service. So why in the HELL is Verizon pushing a systems update that limits my devices full potential?? Why, Verizon, and you taking it upon yourself to limit a device I bought and own out of a Best Buy store just because it’s connecting to my phone through bluetooth that’s on your network!?!? That’s like saying you’re going to push an update to my bluetooth earbuds headset to limit it’s use because it’s connected to a device that’s on your network. That’s bullshyt! I should have the FREEDOM to alter and use my device as I see fit without being dictated by a greedy bullying cell service company’s unnecessary interference. The Gear isn’t even a Verizon branded device!

Why is there a “Verizon” edition Galaxy Gear? Or rather, Verizon specific software? Perhaps you need Verizon software to interact with a Verizon phone?

when i just updated my gear i was pissed that usb was removed and one day bored at work just went in to my settings on the gear the go down to gear info and click and hit about gear and just keep rapidly touching model number a buch and boom usb is back SCORE!!!!!!!!!!

In any case, app development for this thing is ludicrous. I see 5…make it 4 (1 is in Chinese) new apps since release day.
Yea, the app availability is the weak link.. Samsung needs to take it upon themselves to make a bunch of apps for it.
That will happen the day they get rid of touchwiz.
Just another reason to pass on this thing. If you have no apps for your smartgadget, you are dead in the water.

A little off topic but, why are people concerned with Google Glass privacy issues and not this smart watch. Google Glass was even banned in some bar in Seattle. You think with the camera being more obvious on Google Glass people would be less afraid than the camera being on a wrist.

I don’t know what it is and I don’t wanna know! The ONLY VZW anything app I have ever used (dating back to the WAP portal StarTac days) is the MyVZW and that’s just to check usage and billing and whatnot.
It’s a Web portal for text messages. Works well.
