Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Such a decent phone only to be screwed by Verizon yet again. Sure you can pay full price and bring it over but how could Verizon even mess that up. This phone is 3 months old already and you got 2015 flagships about to come out. Sales on these phones are only good for a short period of time. Then it gets to the point of just waiting.

  • Verizon can eat my butt. I’m trying to give them my money and buy two of these. And they just keep on effin me and effin me. 4 months late, come on.

  • Update: The video has been pulled! The nerve of that Verizon trying to cover their tracks.

  • So for Verizon, do we get the Nexus, wait for the S6 or M9? For those that already have it, how is your experience with the Nexus?

  • I’ve had my VZW Nexus 6 since Dec31 and all I did to activate it was put in my VZW sim, power on, & enjoy! Suck it Verizon!!!

  • I kind of hate Verizon after their stunt they pulled today after the FCC announcement on Net Neutrality.

  • So the phone will be FIVE months old by the time Verizon makes it available.
Complete with its last year processor, at the same time (or after!) the M9 and S6 are released.
And that logo looks the most like a bad tacked-on tramp stamp that I’ve ever seen.
Just the latest fail from Verizon (with some of the blame on Google too for the totally botched N6 launch). At launch I somewhat jokingly predicted it would be into 2015 around Feb by the time Verizon gets it. I guess that wasn’t even far enough out.

  • What I am wondering is if all the Nexus 6 devices from the Google Play and Moto stores will get the Verizon Advanced calling, or if that is just going to be a feature the Verizon version gets. Assuming of course, the Verizon Version gets the Advanced calling features.

  • The turbo charger in the Verizon Nexus 6 also magically makes the phone weigh less. That’s what has taken so long.

  • He’s really bad about not glancing at the notes off screen.

Edit: on and mine just arrived from Motorola. Screw you Verizon. No need to wait for your silly branded version.

  • I’ve said it once, but I’ll say it again. I wouldn’t be surprised if 5.1 shipped with this device.

    • Just curious if the nexus phones we bought through the play store will get VoLTE calling since it might not have verizon crapware

  • Thanks Verizon… I was looking forward to getting my N6 fully compatible with your system today and getting advanced calling 1.0 now……

    • LOL good point…I wonder if Advanced Calling will hit the same day as launch. I’d be VERY surprised. Hell, I’d just be happy if Visual Voicemail could be installed (Verizon’s flavor)… yes, I use Google Voice, but occasionally it doesn’t catch every call.

      • I use Google Voice(Hangouts) as well and that just happened to me today. It caught some of the call but the voicemail didn’t come up properly so I don’t know who called me because the number is not in my contacts. I’m surprised normally the voicemail doesn’t catch the call or it comes up a few days later.

    • I was pretty sure this wasn’t going to happen since we still don’t have visual voicemail that works. I checked last night/this morning and knew that it probably wouldn’t be today.

  • I only buy my phones off-contract but it still bothers me that carriers have had the Nexus 6 priced at an on-contract price of $249.99 or higher when it’s full price is comparable to phones that are $199.99 on-contract.

  • Lool. Verizon leaks are always the least reliable. They’re always pushing back the date for something…. I’m guessing they don’t want take away Marketing hype from HTC and Samsung… You know… Devices they actually care about.

  • Really don’t understand why they are holding the launch back, the turbo has had plenty of time for itself.

        • $650 vs $200..? Good reason for most people I’d say. Esp. considering you’re going to pay the same per month regardless of if you’re on contract or not.

          • If you on an VZW Unlimited plan … better to buy it from Moto directly. You can get on a monthly payment plan if you want. With VZW and Unlimited … you can not do Edge. You would just have to buy it out right.

          • Yeah, if you didn’t have another line to transfer upgrades to, you’d be right. Not the case for me though. I’ve been transferring my upgrades to another line so I can get new phones on contract (renewing my unlimited data contract still) without losing my unlimited data.

          • Similar here…..take my mother-in-laws upgrade and I get the new hardware at subsidized price and pass down my previous hardware. All while maintaining that glorious UNLIMITED 4G data!!

          • Yeah … unfortunately not all of us have the luxury … me included. I did get in on that weekend free-for-all back at the end of September 2013 where VZW was allowing customers with Unlimited Data plans to upgrade at subsidized prices and keep their Unlimited Data plans in tact. My wife and I both picked up a Droid Maxx each. That was a good day, but I’ll soon need to upgrade … Nexus 6 is looking good … but I just may hold out a bit longer to see what else comes down the pipe in the near future.

          • Have you checked out the Best Buy method too? I know not too long ago, people were able to order phones on-contract through Best Buy and keep unlimited data. The issue with that though, was that you had to have them deliver it to your house, not do it in store or they would replace your SIM (killing your UDP) and put you on a new data plan. It would tell you that you’re going to lose your UDP when you ordered it though the site too, but as long as you used your existing SIM on your current phone, you wouldn’t lose your plan.

          • Yeah … I looked at that method too when DL posted it … but I’m locked into my 2 year agreement still when I renewed my Unlimited Data plan back in 09/2013. If that method still works, it may be a future option, but it worries me that I will be agreeing to a new data plan at the time of purchase and just fooling the system by popping in my old SIM. I have a strange suspicion that some day VZW will to a massive correction and wipe all those plans out as you cheated the system.

We’ll see this Fall when my 2 year agreement is up … one thing is for DAMN SURE … I’m not giving up my Unlimited Data!! 😉

          • I did the same thing as you – got a Moto X in Sept 2013 when that was going on, so I’m on contract until then. I recently upgraded to a 2014 Moto X via Swappa, and my plan is to keep doing that (or buying new phones if I can find discounts) to keep unlimited. Either that or I switch the whole family to Cricket, but I hate the idea of giving up Verizion unlimited. I’m concerned that they might just wipe out all the unlimited data plans at some point. Once we’re not under contract, I’m not sure there will be anything to stop them.

          • Never knew about Swappa … just looked it up …thanks.
I’m with you … keeping that Unlimited Data plan until they boot me off of it. Cricket is not an option for me … their coverage is awful. A friend of mine had Cricket for about 3 months and he could never keep a call and had crappy reception EVERYWHERE!! VZW is the king of coverage … though AT&T has been coming on strong too.

          • Hmm, your friend’s experience seems odd considering AT&T is only slightly behind Verizon in coverage. I know lots of people on AT&T and just a few on Cricket, and everyone on AT&T likes their coverage. After I switched my husband over to Cricket, he gets a signal everywhere I do. Could be something weird about where your friend lives. But anyway, Swappa is a really great place to buy and sell slightly used phones. It’s safer than Craig’s list and ebay has higher fees. There’s also the Best Buy method, but I’m too chicken to try it. I can’t imagine they’ll leave that loophole open for long anyway.

          • i think after a certain amount of time after your contract ends you get a small discount on your monthly bill. I know my mom is still using an iPhone 4 and they lowered her bill by $10 a month until she upgrades. Or she could have upgraded for free on any phone basically. Not a huge deal, but $10 is $10.

edit: it might be a substantial amount of time after your contract ends, I’m not sure exactly.

          • you do not pay the same amount if you aren’t in a contract… Monthly service fees are less when you are out of contract. The cost becomes a wash. On contract with Verizon will cost you the more when you have to pay 20 more per month for 24 months plus the $250 for 20*24 = 480 + 250 = 730 for a 650 device.

          • News to me. So you’re saying they drop your bill by $20/month while you’re off contract? I’ve never heard of that. And I have no “service fee” listed on my bill for them to cut other than the specific plans I’m paying for. So I’m not sure where they would take the discount out.

          • Its the same way the reduce the service fee when you buy a device on Edge, maybe they call is an access fee, not a service fee. sorry it looks like this on their site: eligible to receive up to $25 off their monthly line access charges…. this is the same you get once you’re off contract too. so its even more expensive now that the math was wrong with 20, its actually 25 a month.

          • Hmm, will have to check into that. My mom’s line (that I use to transfer my upgrades to in order to keep UDP) is currently off contract. It just went off contract in December and my bill hasn’t been cheaper since then.

          • with me, i no longer have unlimited, so maybe it has to do with the stupid “more” plan I have… which “more” stands for it cost me more!

          • i commented above, but this is how I just did it:

I did some digging around on verizonwireless.com.
Go there, log in, to go My Verizon (top drop down menu)>My Account>My Plans and Services
On the right side, click Add/Change Features. There should be a big button that says Get Discount if you have lines that are off contract right now. Just did it and I got $25 off PER LINE (for two lines). So $50 off my plan just like that!

          • Found this on the web… google search: verizon Month2Month discount — this is what you need to ask for once your contract is up. $25 off…

          • I did some digging around on verizonwireless.com.

          • Odd, just verified that my mom’s line is month to month on my account. I went to that Add/Change Features page and I don’t see the button for “Get Discount”. =(. Is it under the “Premium products” or “Free Products” tab?

          • I just looked and there is no button that says “get discount if you have lines that are off contract”. Both my wife and I have been off contract for months now. However, we still have unlimited data. Could that be the reason it’s not available to us?

          • Hmm, that is a good question. Someone in the comments here mentioned that is was for the More Everything plans, so I guess that has to be it :/

          • do you have more info on this? like a source from verizon? im curious to look into this. I bought my N6 through Google and I wasn’t even aware of a discount. My contract actually ends in May so im curious on what i will save.

          • I spoke with a verizon rep about it the out of contract access fees… I was actually talking to them about something else when they brought it up..

          • Thats when you will get the discount. May. Then technically you are on month to month. If you call 611 right now they can confirm the Line access discount for edge or month to month users. If you still are in a contract you cant get the discount. The discount is $15 off per line on 4GB and under or $25 off per line on 6GB and up. Again this discount is only for lines who have finished out their contract or are on edge, with a more everything plan.

          • You don’t just get a discount because you buy your phone full price or your 2 year contract ended. As I understand it, it all depends on the plan you’re on with them (older plans vs newer share plans)

Back when my family was on an older Verizon plan of limited minutes, limited texts and a set 2gb of data per line (Galaxy Nexus days). when I picked up the Moto X 2013 Developer Edition for $400 in that sweet November 2013 sale, my 2 year contract with the Galaxy Nexus ended December 2013, but because of that Verizon plan we were on, the bill wasn’t any cheaper for anyone in the family even though all of our 2 year contracts ended December 2013.

There were two things that needed to happen for me to get a discount on Verizon for buying my own phone. The first thing is that we had to update our family plan to Verizon’s share everything plan (You also needed to do that if you wanted to use Edge payments). The second thing, which didn’t happen until 2014 was that Verizon didn’t originally even give you a discount if you brought your own phone (same thing with Edge, which is why it felt like Edge was double dipping you). Later on in 2014, I happened to see news from Spring 2014 that Verizion would now give you a discount so that when the family finally ‘upgraded’ the plans to the family share everything plan, I had to call up Verizon and basically lay into a service rep (and wait on hold for a while she had to figure everything out) until she finally flipped the switch and I was getting $25 off my line because I wasn’t on contract or Edge payment plan.

Now with the family share plan, we get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and a shared pool of data and I finally get my line discount for having my own phone, which is now the Nexus 6 on Verizon with my portion costing me a total of only $45 a month 😀

          • I never had to lay into a Service rep. I was able to activate the discount through My Verizon when I was off contract on a More Everything plan.

          • I’m off contract for a year and my bill has not changed, so the subsidies are still somewhere hidden in my bill

          • It’s like paying for insurance with “accident forgiveness”. The deductible (in this case, early termination fee) is “hidden” as part of your premium/monthly payment.

          • let’s also not forget… buy the phone through Moto and get 2 years of warranty $150 compared to VZW (I think) is 7 or 8 a month (168) and cost more per incident than Moto plan.

    • It looks like it might be black? The renders are darker than any renders of the blue, but they still look like it could be blue. Who knows.

      • Was reading on Reddit that they were just poorly done renders and it is actually the Midnight Blue. But who knows haha. Dbrand skin fixed that for me!

    • I should call Verizon stores and bug the employees about it being shown as available online. Just to be spiteful and maybe employees complain enough about be calls that corporate for a split second considers treating customers better before continuing to do what they’ve always done, treat customers like crap.

        • I’m a retail customer service manager. Ha. I only have these fantasies as some sort of fulfilling revenge for what I put up with.

          • Agreed…I love seeing comments like that as if we aren’t regular people or regular customers who deal with the same stuff as every other customer

  • Maybe they pushed the N6 launch aside for the BlackBerry Classic launch today. Which wasn’t really a launch and you can’t get the device until the 5th.

  • I’m so glad I got it off contract from moto. No ugly verizon tramp stamp and i didn’t have to wait at all for it. If you’re looking to buy this phone, do yourself a favor and get it from the play store or moto so you don’t have to deal with verizon’s bs.
