Telus Says Google is Releasing Android 6.0 Marshmallow on October 5

According to Canadian wireless carrier Telus, Google will begin pushing the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update on October 5 to the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6. If that’s the case, that’s probably also a good launch time frame for the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Google likes to ship new versions of its Android OS on its new phones. Also, October 5 has been mentioned to us by sources who are expecting “things” to kick off.

The information on the 6.0 update comes via Telus’ support area, but does show in a post that is 3 months old. Canadian blog MobileSyrup, who discovered the post, says it has been updated recently, so we’ll have take their word for it.

Can Google push out a public release of Marshmallow a week after it’s made official? Hope so.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

    • And you will get it, right after Android N 7.0 is released. Until then please be patient. -Sincerely Verizon

      • LOL I don’t know. This last update fiasco was more due to 5.0 being a unholy buggy mess, than Verizon taking their sweet time pushing the OTA. If 6.0 is better out of the box, then it might be a much faster update.

        • Droid Mini/Ultra/Maxx all still stuck in Kitkat land with 6.0 on the horizon… I guess its not soo bad as I dont enjoy the new lighter backgrounds in the settings menus…. it just seems like with any Droid I’ve had after the first year dont count on much in the way of OS updates…. Just updates for Security patches and to swap out bloat apps, gotta keep the bloat fresh ya know…

          • Yeah, true. My old Maxx that I keep as a backup is definitely in need of some Lollipop goodness.

          • Its just funny to see the OG Moto X lollipopped and the Droid Mini/Ultra/Maxx trio with Advanced calling 1.0 (VoLTE). They run basically the same hardware yet soo much work must have been put into keep them on different software levels…. Its just mind boggling…..

  • Is it expected that these Nexuses will work on all carriers (such as Verizon) like the Nexus 6 did? The Nexus 6 and Moto X Pure are the only phones that do this…and both have been made by Motorola.

    • That is still yet to be seen if the new Nexus devices will work on Verizon. Im thinking they wont because out of the 2 Nexus devices the one that has done the best has been the Nexus 6 made by Motorola. Motorola and Verizon seem to have a special relationship that has been working for them for years now…

      • Verizon and moto are super cozy ever since Verizon signed over the Droid to Moto exclusivity now. Probably why Moto and can sell without Verizon acting middleman too. No other OEM on Verizon can do that. I’ll be amazed, again, if Nexus is able to sell through verizon. But Verizon will somehow get it’s middleman cut I’d assume if it’s allowed.

    • They will. Verizon is allowing for unlocked phones to start working on their network. It started with the two iPhone 6’s and the Nexus 6 (few months after launch on the network), and every phone after that should have an unlocked compatibility, assuming of course the device has all of the relevant radios. You can see this policy working with the new Moto X.

  • As a gauge of the accuracy of that release, did the HTC One M9 get the CA issue fix and the StageFright v2 pushed today???

      • My N6 at the moment. Gmail uses the most power by the end of the day than anything and that is without even checking the mail.

        • Well that doesn’t seem right. I don’t think I’ve even seen Gmail at the top of the battery usage. Do you have a non Gmail email that you are using with it that may be causing your email to have issues receiving something? Maybe it’s continuously trying to receive an email that won’t come through?

          • I do have comcast and gmail on gmail app. It has been like this since 5.1.1. The phone is usually hot in the holder. I have googled it and other people seem to be having the same problem. I have great hopes for Marshmallow.

          • Well I don’t know why a system update would fix it. It sounds like it’s an issue with the app itself. Or one of your emails. Maybe try removing Comcast from it and see if it helps at all.

          • I am going to try the auto syncing to never, first and then I will remove comcast. Thanks for your thoughts.

        • Turn off the auto update. That’s from Gmail checking in with the host server…. I don’t have that problem with mine

    • My mom had this issue after upgrading to lollipop, looked at the battery stats and it showed 50% of her consumption. Fixed it the lazy way by just disabling the app.

      • Turning off the sync to never has made it go away. You only get email when you start up the app, though. No notifications as emails arrive.

        • She doesn’t really use the app that much since she uses the comcast email app instead. Disabling it was just easier then trying some stuff. Also the application had over a gig of cached files.

  • I have no reason to get neither Moto X Pure or Nexus 5x now.. I honestly believed that Nexus 5 was just not going to get anymore updates after Lollipop, but since I was wrong, I might as well just keep with my Nexus 5. It has honestly been the best phone I’ve ever owned. Moto X Pure’s size and battery issues, and Nexus 5x unappealing specs, don’t really sell me on getting a new phone at all.

I hope Telus is correct, that would be sweeeeeet.

    • me too… just installed a new battery in mine and it’s a lot better… not great but should be good for another year

  • Why not September 29th? . . . IF those phones are ready to ship Marshmallow is ready. Unless we’re also waiting for that date for Nexus orders

          • not sure why they don’t just delay it or wait til they can ship it to stores and then release it. would make it much better and not have to anxiously sit around waiting for shipping updates lol

          • True, but then we’d be sitting around looking at all the photos pop-up online of the shipments sitting on pallets in the back of stores, wondering why they haven’t gone on sale yet.

        • I’m an Android guy and even I know the iPhone isn’t available day 1. Its up for pre-order usually the same week of the announcement on a Friday. It arrives and available for public a week or two later. Not until this weekend will the latest iphone be ready for the masses, but it was announced a week or two ago.

      • That’s interesting. Wasn’t the N6 available on announcement day? And the N5 (my memory is bad)

    • On another site they say this date is when they will start the OTAs. I don’t know if that’s true but If that’s the case, hopefully the Factory Images will be available after their event.

    • They might be available to order on the 29th, but maybe Google isn’t expecting shipments/in-store sales to arrive until the 5th.
