Here’s an interesting little fact about the new HTC 10 – it supports Apple’s AirPlay. It may even be the first Android to do so.
What’s AirPlay? It’s like Google Cast, only for iOS devices. In other words, AirPlay is the technology from Apple that lets you stream music or video from your device through an Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled speaker.
There are apps on Google Play that will let you stream content through AirPlay devices already, but HTC has essentially licensed the software and built it in natively to the 10. That’s pretty cool news if you happen to have a house filled with Apple TVs and other iOS devices.
Any chance we’ll see other Android manufacturers do the same? Would you like to see others do it?

My M9 just got an update to the HTC Connect app enabling Airplay
Now if they announced they had iMessage that would have been a real coup.
This shouldn’t be a shock. Apple and HTC have an agreement to swap info. Look it up. Like Apple can’t sue HTC because of this agreement. HTC is a joke and it’s sad because I use to love them. If they leave the Android market I don’t think a person would be shocked and most wouldn’t even care. The only person they can blame is HTC themselves.
Great job HTC at leveraging some of Apples tech to use with their products. Seeing that each can use each others licenses this should just be the beginning of what HTC can offer.
Cool news if you happen to have a house filled with Apple devices or disappointing if you don’t have said devices but still have to pay for this license fee (built-in to the cost of the phone — which is already $50 – $100 too much). Sigh…
If you have any old android devices laying around, you can turn them into airplay receivers. PC’s too.
I hate to jump on the “iPhone clone” bandwagon, but there’s no denying the similarities. Is anyone worried about this given that HTC is supposedly making the next Nexus phones? (Unless I’m misremembering)
This is actually very interesting. I’ve obviosuly got Google Cast devices but we have Apple TVs in our offices and conference rooms for meetings so this is very neat. Almost a worthy reason (along with other great specs) to buy one of these.
iPhone clone has iPhone features. Ohhhhhhhhh
All it needs is an itunes account on it.
Guess you’ll be horribly surprised to find Moto had iTunes on their phones…

Dumb comments are dumb!!
Wow nice move Htc!
I don’t care if it supports airplay or not, I care if it supports all carriers. Does anybody know if the HTC will sell an unlocked version of the 10 like they did with the A9? Except preferably a version this time that supports both CDMA and GSM carriers?

Thanks! That’s great news! It’s weird though, I see in the specs that it supports all of Verizon’s and Sprint’s bands but it says that it will only work on AT&T and T-Mobile…
Could be a certification thing. I’m not sure.
Ya I contacted HTC, they said it’s on VZW to flip the switch… I contacted VZW they said nope, they’re not gonna flip it. Guess they didn’t want it on their network because it’s Unlocked and they can’t bloat it out?
Of course it does.. It’s an Apple clone… Just look at it…
No, actually Apple asked HTC to let them use their design of the Antennas and they have an agreement on using each others hardware designs, that’s probably why Apple let HTC use the licence for the Apple Play.
lol no. HTC is paying Apple per device shipped.
It’s really irrelevant. If you’re going to use Apple suite of featured apps and services you need to use an Apple device. I wouldn’t use either. Apple is more concerned with selling you “the image” than a serviceable product. I mean what the hell you still have to use and connect your phone via a cable to a pc using their provided music/media distribution software to do ANYTHING meaningful as far as really managing the device. Hello, 1998 calling they want their technology back. As far as HTC, they lost all credibility with users, or at least myself, in having such massively intrusive crap filled versions of Android on their devices and being ultra slow or nonexistent on updates.
I read in an interview that HTC is all about supporting competitors services like this because they feel it just makes sense overall. They’re even up for supporting multiple payment systems like Samsung Pay. Really, this is a smart move on their part…
Samsung Pay would be a bonus on any phone.

I doubt Samsung would license it to other companies, it’s a big draw for people to Samsung
I actually have a love, hate relationship with Samsung Pay. I love using it, but i hate that it has basically made every non Samsung device a non starter for me. After 4 years of avoiding HTC the 10 has a lot of features that i like (not as many as my Note 5), I’d ike to try a different OEM but i can’t give up Samsung Pay.
Huge draw. The only reason why I would even consider Samsung.
“It just makes sense.”
It makes Sense?!
Eh?!
Sense?!
.. I’ll show myself out.
…
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Samsung do this.
It’s a nice to have. Do we know if it Support APTX HD for Bluetooth?
They support already quite a lot with the QuickConnect feature, although it doesn’t include AirPlay yet. It’s in general smart to support as much as possible because people not only stream at home … they might also want to stream content at a friends home who use different hardware. The easier it gets implemented and the more protocols it supports the better it is … it’s something I’ve always missed on Nexus devices. OEMs like HTC, Samsung and other do a much better job on this.
Probably.. HTC is one of the only ones thats used aptx
My sister has an Apple TV and I was able to cast YouTube videos to it with my Nexus 5. Is this different?
Youtube has it’s own cast type method. I’ve done it on LG and Vizio TVs with iPhones and Android.
Yes, I guess it works if you have an Apple TV and don’t want an iPhone but want an Android device to do the same as the iPhone would do
Yes, AirPlay is a different protocol. It allows audio/video streaming to devices that support it. AirPlay actually works really well, we use it weekly to present video content over a projector.
this would be my phone over the s7, if it only had a 5.5 inch screen. Still waiting on a good bigger screen phone.
Very strange and unexpected addition, but a nice one nonetheless.
Honestly the more i read about this phone the better it sounds. I don’t see why so many people are saying its bad.
I think it’s one of the best looking android phones this year. I’m not a big advocate of HTC. My last HTC phone was the Thunderturd, but this phone is definitely my favorite so far. I’ll be interested to see how well it performs.
Yikes, I had the that one too, what a bad memory after having the Incredible.
People like to complain… Well and it’s slightly overpriced to be honest. I think it’s shaping up to be a great all round device….but let’s see how battery life and the camera reviews.
Looks like it’s the best camera on the market now.

Oh snap!
Yeah no kidding. and a bit yeah. but i’m sure thats to compensate for carrier licensing but yeah battery will be the most important part for me
If you’ve ever crossed over platforms, this is a pretty nice feature to have. And the apps on the Play Store do not work well. It’ll be interesting to see if it works well on the 10, but I love that they added this.
If they’re paying to License it, it better work well.
Indeed – it should, in theory, work a lot better than the Play Store options – on par with Apple devices…. in theory.
I use air audio. It’s perfect. It needs a rooted phone to be worth using, but it’s amazing.
Yeah that’s the story with a lot of them unfortunately (or fortunately I guess). It’s half-baked, at best, if you aren’t rooted.
