Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: One Month Later

Our review of the Galaxy S7 Edge has been up for a little while now, and having used the device for a solid month at this point, I feel as if I should share my final take on the device before I get something else in my hands. Unsurprisingly to many, I’m sure, the Galaxy S7 Edge is still my vote for the top device released so far in 2016. It’s pretty early in the year after all, but from what I have seen thus far, I don’t think the LG G5 or HTC 10 have what it takes to overcome everything the Galaxy S7 Edge offers.

Over the course of this month, I have been very happy with the phone’s overall performance, and thanks to an update that recently came from T-Mobile and Samsung (I have an unbranded T-Mobile variant), my battery life has even gotten better from what I experienced during my review period. While I was usually hitting the hay with about 10-15% of juice left at the end of each day, I am easily seeing 30-35% battery left come bed time. For me, this is quite adequate.

GALAXY S7 EDGE SILVER

Other high notes from this past month include the Galaxy S7 Edge’s camera, IP68 water resistance, and theming software Samsung baked into the phone. Usually, one of my main gripes with Samsung phones is the UI and color palette choice, but with themes, all of that is changeable and I can get pretty darn close to a stock Marshmallow look if I try hard enough. In addition, I have been using Nova Launcher to strengthen my customization options. For real, if you don’t use Nova, you’re doing Android wrong.

As for the previously mentioned camera experience, the aspects I notice most are the speed of the shutter and the time to focus. When switching between subjects inside of a shot, the phone is very quick to focus, and as soon as it is focused, I can begin shooting instantaneously. There is hardly pause between shots, which makes shooting my fast-paced dogs very easy. When they are running around the yard, I want to be able to capture those silly faces they make, and when you have a phone that can snap shots back-to-back in rapid succession, it makes life so much easier. I continue to rate the camera experience on the Galaxy S7 Edge as the top of what Android has to offer.

Let’s also get back to water resistance. While it may seem that IP68 is a trend we just recently started hyping, I can’t say enough good things about it. Now, when a new phone is announced, if it doesn’t have this feature, I almost feel ripped off. If Samsung is able to build a device of this standard, while making it resistant to tons of water and solid ingress, then why don’t other OEMs? My point is mostly directed at HTC. The HTC 10 is a damn good looking smartphone, but really, they couldn’t give that thing IP68? Or even IP67? As it stands, the HTC 10 has very little water resistance, so little that you really wouldn’t even want to splash water on it. For HTC to charge $700 off the bat for the 10, higher water and dust resistance would have been appreciated. Now that I have a phone that I can do whatever with, like completely use when it’s raining outside or in the kitchen when I am making dinner with no fear of it getting ruined by spilling something, I don’t want to lose that added experience. As an example, I have been watching baseball with my Galaxy S7 Edge on the counter, all while rinsing off salad leaves and veggies. Then, with my hands still wet, I can move the phone out of the way. No worries at all. As a consumer, that added peace of mind is great.

GALAXY S7 EDGE SILVER

With all of the good stuff out of the way, let’s talk about what I don’t like and my fears of having this device in the future. As we all know, Samsung and carriers have not been the best about delivering updates. Yes, they are getting better, but it’s still nowhere near Nexus levels. You think because the Galaxy S7 Edge is the “new” phone, Samsung is magically going to send updates more quickly? Please. The Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 were once considered new phones and look at them, only recently receiving updates to Marshmallow. As someone who relies on having the latest and greatest software from Google, that is purely unacceptable. Not too long ago, HTC began promising 90-day update windows for when new versions of Android launched. 90 days isn’t too bad, but to this day, Samsung or LG have been nowhere near a timeline like HTC promises. When it comes to the update game, you just can’t trust these companies to deliver the goods in a timely manner. Sure, you might see a few updates quickly, but in the long run, you will be left behind like every other flagship buyer before you.

Prediction time: The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge won’t receive Android N until November or December, at the earliest. With Android N release scheduled for “Q3,” bet your bottom dollar that you won’t see an official update for these phones until months after that.

Lastly, my only real gripe would be the single speaker on the bottom of the phone. It’s placement is bad. The sound is weak. The overall external audio experience on the phone leaves much to be desired. It’s shallow, tinny, and lacks any sort of audio depth. The fact that I constantly need to cup my hand over the speaker to hear it is definitely a downside.

And there you have it, my month with the Galaxy S7 Edge in a nutshell. The performance, battery, and camera are still fantastic, but I fear Samsung will screw me when it comes to updates. As it stands right now, if I had to stick to one phone for this year, it would be the Galaxy S7 Edge. It delivers everything I need and then some.

If you own the Galaxy S7 Edge, please feel free to share your ups and downs with the phone in the comments section. Do you agree with my assessment?

  • A right telephone to cease being, to give way to another species, each year of the life, a step in technology, not to say, the update it is a passage, OBLIGED! Sinners repenting come soak yourself with your Galaxy s7 without you disturb, spend your time receiving photographs and videos without thinking of its capacity, are always ready to download the heaviest files, because which knows, if your chance is not there. See how much Facebook is good and install it, see how much Whatsapp is soft and put it up to date, humiliate if you are not yet with the step, are not the arrogant ones, because that which undercrust will be to raise. It is known as in the book which Kana will not inherit version 6.0 Android, only those which are recent will know its taste and those which spend their time making scandalmongering will remain in the hell of Version 2.0.1, and as we know it already brothers and sisters these telephones warm up as iron vis-a-vis a signal 4G LTE of Dated or Wifi. Repent and Join us with the sheep-fold of the new versions and are already ready for the acclamation from what has to come. It is my wish for you because me I am already saved.

  • I have the S7. Only issue is the glass and pressure sensor. I had my keys in the same pocket and regret the scratches. I sometimes find the pressure sensor too sensitive, wish there was an adjustment. Other than that, very much like the phone.

  • I’ll probably get this when a bootloader exploit + CyanogenMod build is available for it. Samsung flagships run CM like champs.

  • There is more to having a Nexus phone but if you think you are having the same benefit in any non-nexus phone who am I to rain on your fantasy? I for one will never again buy a Samsung phone or any phone that is locked down.

  • Very much agree on the waterproofing. It’s not that I’m dunking my phone in water just to confirm if it really meets the spec, but the peace of mind in day to day activities is huge. Just the other day I was out with friends when it started raining. Immediately everyone with phones out moved to shield them from the moisture, but I (admittedly being just a LITTLE bit of a jerk) just kept doing my thing.

Coming from the S5, I think TouchWiz is hugely improved. When I got my S7 edge the first thing I did was load up Google Now launcher, call it a force of habit. About a week later, just for kicks, I tried out TouchWiz, expecting to be back on GNL within a day or two. A couple weeks later, I’m still on TouchWiz. Maybe a real power user would notice the difference, but for me it’s doing just fine – more than enough for my needs and to meet my expectations. I love the browser too – quicker than Chrome with a lot of Chrome’s best features, and the fingerprint scanner for website logins is brilliant.

Battery life greatly exceeds my expectations. All the reviews said, expect to get a day or better, but at least how I’m using it, I get more than two days until I get to the 20% where I like to charge up. In my office where signal strength is weak, my S5 would hemorrhage power trying to connect if it was doing anything but sitting idle (outside the office it would get 3-4 days easy), while using the S7 I can still get a solid day and a half streaming music from Milk player (another great Samsung app) for eight hours straight. For all the power this phone has and its big screen, that’s excellent.

One negative I’ve found is Bluetooth signal strength. My S5 could transmit to the receiver in my stereo system from anywhere in the house and come through sounding great. The S7 is much more sensitive to distance from the receiver and even orientation, and I wouldn’t really want to leave the same room add the receiver if I wanted good reception. But I’m keeping the S5 for music player purposes anyway, so not a huge issue.

All in all, an excellent phone.

  • Have any of you found a good tempered glass screen cover for the S7 edge? The reviews on Amazon are underwhelming and I don’t know what company to go with.

  • So how is development on this phone? …..crickets….. Locked bootloader, no custom recovery = no buy from me. I like Samsung as a company but our US carriers have too much control over a device you purchase. Maybe one day a developer edition will come out? Prob not on Big Red though :'(

  • I really wanted to like this phone as im coming from a galaxy S6 edge. Well, after a couple of weeks, i couldn’t keep data connections. Id have to toggle from global to the lte/cdma, and back to globle to get connected. Verizon had me try everything possible including a factory reset with the old and with a new sim card. Now that I’m out of my 14 day window, they’ll replace it with a “rephurb”? I don’t think so. Not after I paid over $700.00 for a NEW product thats less than a month old. So I sold it to a friend who’s into fixing electronics, sucked up the rest of the cost and wrnt back to my trusty S6 edge. To be honest, since theMM update, the S6 edge had been every bit as good, and fadt as the S7 edge was. Im even making it the whole day battery wise. So dissapointed with the S7 edge, and Verizon. Buy the way, ive been with verizon 24 years, have 5 lines and still got burned. And the could give a rats a__.

  • first i was really annoyed by TouchWiz (colors, icons, notification UI and UX) but then they made another System UI which can be downloadable externally, called Good Lock… And they promised to deliver update to this every 2 weeks and I stated been using two iteration of theirs update and so far it done really well in their updates …

you can grab APK here https://twitter.com/htet_will_/status/723416091356057600

  • Samtards will always say important things are NOT important because having a S pen or multi window makes up for everything else. We don’t care if our Notes and S5’s , or S6’s don’t perform as good as other devices, we have multi window. Who cares about the latest and greatest update, we have an S-pen. These guys bragged and supported Samsung even when they had the cheapest, slow, hiccup, laggy devices on the market. Original galaxy, S2, S3, S4, S5, Note, Note2, Note3, Note4. I mean these devices were horrible in just about every aspect. Yet you could always count on Samtards to tell a different story because they never owned anything else to see the difference. Now that Sammy is FINALLY offering some decent devices, you don’t stand a chance of pointing out a negative.

  • I love my S7E…I literally begged, borrowed, and stole to get rid of the slow, cranky, glitchy S5. This phone is what that phone should have been. If the S8 is better. I can’t imagine what that would be like.

    • I love the trade in program. Once a year you get chance for a brandy new one. You got a house payment & car payment a phone payment is the lesser of the two. How about the note 6. There talking 6 gigs & a 823 processer. Pretty soon will be talking to et and other planets!!!!!!!

  • A “Non removable battery” phone is a huge stupidity. I love the s7 edge but I’m going to buy the LG G5 today. Just because of that.

    • Good luck waiting for modules. Extra bucks after paying 600 plus. Installing them is great fun too wait till you try. Ha ha!!!!!!!!

  • Got my silver S7 Edge last week. The “theme” ability is a huge plus. It is delaying my usually quick move to bullpen launcher…Nova. The screen is amazingly beautiful. Because of the edge, the screen really pops out and gives it a 3 dimensional look. Everyone I have shown it to is blown away by it. I really don’t think at this point you can praise it enough.

    • I love the camera. I show people closeups of still’s. They can’t believe how clear they are. Kinda a wow factor. Wrinkle city you can’t hide much!!!

  • Am i the only one experiencing slow perfomance on my s7 edge? Everyone keeps talking about how great the s7 is but i wish i could say the same.
I miss my s6 edge+. I have the same apps that i had on my s6 edge+ so it’s not a problem of too many apps. I have a class 10 64gb sd card installed which is only used as storage for my camera pics.

The s7 lags when switching between apps and is slow when browsing the Web (either with samsung’s ad blocking browser or chrome) be it wifi or lte, i find myself waiting a lot for tasks.

I use my s7 at the same locations that i used my s6 edge+ at, so it’s not a network issue.

Tldr my s6 e+ was faster and snappier than my s7 edge 🙁

    • Had the same trouble after using smartswitch to transfer my apps from my retired S6edge. Since, I’ve factory reset the phone, restore my users data without app, and fresh install my apps. Since then, flawless experience. If you’re in the same situation I was, you may tried that method. Hope it helps

  • I LOVE the S7 Edge. My only complaints are the “edge” doesn’t have the same cool features as the note Edge, the fingerprint magnet aspect of
the design and bloatware. Otherwise it is an amazing phone. My previous one overheated and I got a new one by warranty today. Hopefully I got a faulty unit
and won’t run into any issues. I was always an HTC fanboy until I tried the S6, I got the s7 Edge and refuse to go back. The HTC 10 was a letdown compared to
    this phone.

  • Tim, have you, or anyone else here for that matter, noticed that certain notifications just stop working on your s7?

All of a sudden I won’t get email notifications at all, then find they’re somehow blocked, or not and I turn them off and back on again and then they work again. Or, the problem i have now, the SMS app no longer provides notifications (not on wear either) and I’ve tried everything short of factory resetting the phone to get those working again and no such luck.

Using both default Samsung apps for email and SMS so always on screen shows the notifications (though for some dumb ass reason the Samsung email app doesn’t show notifications there; yet(?)).

    Finding it irritating as fuk!

  • I’m surprised that it’s still as speedy as the first day. Understandably, everyone says that when in reality, they usually notice some lag here and there. I’m not saying the S7 is perfect; I’ve had a few shudders mostly when I’m throwing everything at the device and have way too many apps open. But a month in, and it’s still speedy. I have been noticing my battery life dying quickly but it’s most likely due to something I did and not the phone itself. I once got 17 hours in a day with heavy use and 23 on power save modes with the same useage. Now I’m getting around 11 hours. All in all, the best device I have ever owned. Lol its also kind of funny how my iPhone using friend asked me to take pictures of her just now. Her iPhone is on her desk and I asked if she wants me to take it with her phone and she said no, she wants me to take her picture on mine.

  • what do you mean by unbranded version of tmobile S7Edge, also have yoy tried Samsung pay, I love it.

    • He could mean that his version doesn’t say T-Mobile on it like mine says Verizon

      • well I got mine a Tmobile and it doesn’t say Tmobile anywhere but in the software, that is why i asked

        • I think that’s what he meant. I have “Verizon” branded on the back of mine.

  • I received my TMobile Edge a few days before the release date, so I’ve had plenty of time to know this phone.. My only problem with the phone is the ultra sensitivity of the touch screen. I understand there’s an update released to correct that.. Besides what was mentioned in the review, about the camera, the low light capability is amazing. Coming out of a LG4 and before that S5, the feel and look is substantially better, although the back power button, is a better arrangement on the LG4.. While on comparisons, the battery life has no equal, all day is not euphemism, but a reality. Don’t hesitate to purchase what in my opinion is truly the latest an greatest.

  • I have S7 edge (Exynos model) and it’s fantastic phone, but what is normal battery duration. I’m a normal user not heavy just make some calls, sometimes play small games for 10 or 15 minutes max. I recharge the battery every 20 – 22 hours. Is it normal.
I’m very disappointing from indoor camera video recording. The focus is very very bad, a lot of details are gone just you push record button “especially for human skins, Its less details and less saturated”. and the zooming issue which enforce me to record with 9.6MP without video stabilization and not full hd quality
Is there is a solution for this

    • On LTE only, I recharge every 20h with around 6h SOT. On WIFI I can reach 8 to 9h sot.

      • I’m not using mobile data at all, and it drains like I said before. My battery drain in stand by and always on display is off. Hope solve it in next update as I saw update which improve battery status but I haven’t it yet.
        What about camera issue?

        • No camera issue here so far. What’s your problem ?
You should try the agressive doze mode from greenify (no root), it improves a lot my standby time.

          • I mean when you open camera app if you want to take photo no problem in that but when you start pressing record button the saturation of photo change ” become less saturated (colors temperature)” and the details of object become less ” if you try to record a video to your hand for example the hair in your hand will become not seen well unless you manual focus it” and “try to record a video for a human face it become something like cartoons (I mean it there no temperature in face)”. all of that is indoor under artificial light, but outside it’s good.
            I hope you understand me

          • Are you refereing about overprocessing on people’s face? It’s maybe du by the beauty face mod bein enabled

          • I’ve just saw your video and picture, there’s lack of texture here, have you tried it in better lighting conditions ? You’ll be able to know if this lack is due to bad lighting conditions, which is a possibility

          • you are right video outdoor is brilliant and in good lightning is good, so my camera is fine
PS: after many charge cycles the battery is very good

          • Yeah ikr battery life have been flawless for me, can’t kill it in a work day, however battery life seems to have worsened with the last update (ADP1)

          • On the contrary for me, This update improve my battery life substantially as it’s the first update for phone in my country

          • Since that update my “android system ” comes second on my biggest battery drainer… :/

  • I absolutely agree with you about the placement of the “speaker” being on the bottom of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. I constantly stream video’s on YouTube and due to the poor location of the speaker when I turn the phone sideways to get the best viewing of the video the speaker is placed right where I naturally put my thumb to hold the phone. I quickly realized this after the sound was near non existence that my thumb was actually covering the speaker up while holding my phone sideways to view the video. Extremely frustrating. Now I have to hold my phone in an unnatural position everytime I turn it sideways and this is very annoying since I view videos quite frequently. Hopefully samsung catches this in near future and moves the speaker elsewhere. Seems poorly thought out if they would have taken a moment to test phone from users stand point they would have caught that. Thank you for pointing this out…I’m glad I’m not the only one annoyed by this.

  • You need to cup your hand over the speaker to hear it? Oh, i get it ,your use to Boomsound and now your deaf…granted this speaker is not the loudest but comming from an Htc m7, m8, m9, it has a higher quality then i expected , no one should have to cup their hand around it, i went to the edge because htc dropped the stereo front facing speakers and this gave me a reason to change to something new in my experience , if the edge had decent front facing speakers it would be the best slab out there , i have a jam alloy stereo blue tooth speaker to help out but i still prefer boomsound for it’s excellent stereo effects and partial ear melting qualities it’s not always about volume but the quality of the sound, the edges mono speaker is not as bad as some describe it ,.. it does the job for most youtube videos some games and music , not hd movies or anything else that requires oomph! Otherwise it really is not that bad.

  • I will have to agree with this review. Only thing is the speaker on the phone is fine Imogen. I use SkullCandy Hesh 2.0 headphones when I’m going to be watching videos for a while or listening to music.

The S7 Edge really is the best phone this year. The Camera is amazing and the display is amazing and… I could go on and on.

  • HTC 10 has great speakers. Hard to do that if the phone is water proof. Samsung speaker is bad, as you say, but has the waterproofing. Look at Sony’s for both pretty good speaker sound and waterproofing.. but that’s the exception, and even those aren’t as good sounding as HTC.

Of course I’d love it if the 10 managed to be water proof while still having great sound, but it seems such tech is just not there yet. I’d love it if it had wireless charging as well, while keeping the metal body. But those couple negatives are less overall compared to the three huge negatives with every Samsung device (speaker, buttons, software).

    • If you got sound problem for 129.00 you can purchase a bose sound link. How can you expect good sound out of phone.

      • If I want to use an external bluetooth speaker, I can do that, regardless.

I expect good sound out of a phone because companies who’s devices I’ve purchased such as HTC, Motorola, and Sony, do provide good sound out of a phone. And yet the HTC 10 with really good sound, costs less than the Samsung GS’s with their awful speaker.

  • Choice is purely individual. For example, fromm all manufacturers phones i have best expirience so far with htc. All 3 i had still work fine as on day one. This will make influence surely on my choice. 10 is lacking in some specs behind s7 edge but it offers no1 durability s7 edge can never offer with its glass construction and very sensitive screen. Audio expirience on 10 is a class above than on s7 edge. Smoothness in operating and no loss in performance over time is also advantage of 10. Baterry is smaller than edge but slightly better than s7….good enough. I don’t shower with my phone and it’s enough for me that 10 can stand rain or snow . So it depends what you expect from your phone. I explained why my choice will be 10. Price though could be lower from European point of view and htc should offer same to us like in USA. Thats the only problem i have with 10.
And i congratulate htc for 10, they corrected 10 in all the right places inspite their situation and low resources. So now it’s time that we users help htc by buying best phone htc made till today.

  • I love my S7 edge. My only gripes are the edge can be too sensitive to touch at times and the swipe functionality in this phone is not as good what I had with the Droid Turbo.

  • S7 Edge battery life it’s fantastic for me, as an update I care less, the function perfect. I love it, but always I afraid it going to break in my hand, it’s light and thin.

  • Just switched from an iPhone 6 plus and I couldn’t be happier to make the switch back to android. Question: for those that own the s7 edge, do you use a screen protector on it?

    • I use the screen knight full body (front & back) wet application protectors & works/protects great. I tried the front tempered glass but looked like cheap plastic. EBay item number: 152001890104

  • Just can’t see spending that much. Since 2013’s Moto X I haven’t spent over $500 on a phone and they’ve all been great.

  • I own the same Galaxy S7 edge as you, IMO is the best phone hands down. The only thing I wish it had is HQ front-facing speakers

  • Love the S7 Edge and I agree with you on the speaker, too weak for such a great phone. The only other issue is have is screen edges while watching videos can get a little annoying to hold the phone without hitting something else on the screen, like fast forward the video or just exiting the app all together.

I got a great clear cover from Samsung that helps a little with that though.

But this is the best phone I’ve ever had hands down

    • These issues being reported with functionality due to the Edge screen seem to make it really not worth having. I always thought it seemed like a gimmick since they Samsung played around with the tech with the Note Edge. Nothing I’ve seen since has shown me it’s not still a gimmick.

    • I’ve had this happen on so many different Android devices, and still not entirely sure why…

Galaxy Tab S 8.4, LG G Pad 8.3, Moto RAZR HD, Shield Tab K1

I don’t know if it’s an Android problem or an SD card problem?!

  • I completely agree that IP68 is a useful and tangible upgrade in user experience. And I agree that it would’ve been nice if the HTC 10 has a higher rating. That being said, I’ve never had a phone die on me from using it in the rain, ever. I feel like it’s been a bit overly dramatic, as if IP53 is completely useless. Hell, I use my Moto G, HTC One M7 and even an HTC EVO 4G LTE for runs, and there’s been more than a few times where I had to run back in torrential downpour and all those devices survived either handheld or in an armband that’s not waterproof. All those phones have survive so far perfectly fine.

  • Well coming from the note 4 the s7 edge is a beast my battery can last up too 2 days the games are blazing fast just like the rest of the phone. The only time my phone ever heated up when I used my mixing app one time. Once you get it you can put it down really.

  • Not here to bash Samsung by any means but on a day to day basis I use a galaxy s7 edge, LG G5, and iPhone 6S plus and soon will add HTC 10 to the mix when it ships. I’m a pretty hardcore phone user an average day for me is nearly 1000 texts 2 hrs of phone calls and 4 hrs of miscellaneous streaming while I’m working of netflix, hulu, and directv. Now with that being said I kill all the phones well before the day is over (my iphone 6S twice sometimes 3x a day) but I’ve noticed some issues with them all. LG’s battery life has gone down quite a bit since ive been using it but has been the best performer (no lag yet), Samsung galaxy s7 edge I have screen burn already which is irritating by far and I had to get the wireless battery charger for it which has noticeably heated up the phone like crazy and a really bad stutter when I load up and play star wars now to the point where I gave up and load it on my g5, and the iphone is just too slow and inconsistent for me performance wise and has an even more terrible lag that’s is hair pulling ridiculous and battery life is by far the weakest on it. But I will update this post after I’ve uses the HTC 10 for a month and give you my opinion on it!

  • The S7 Edge is a gorgeous phone. But then I think of some things. Glass back, no USB-C, no Quick Charge 3.0, no adoptive storage, TouchWiz, Update wait, Meager audio. Seems the HTC 10 checks all those boxes and comes equal or close in most other things. The 10 is not released yet, so the camera tuning may or may not resolve some of its noted concerns. I prefer the larger screen size of the S7 Edge, and I wish there was a 64GB option for either one. But, it seems the 10 checks more of the important boxes for me, especially if they can tighten up that camera tuning.

    • Oh yes it is bro, last samsung phone i used was the S4. you wouldn’t recognise TW and its performance 🙂

      • I had the s6 for a little while. It was better outside the random ram issue which they fixed. Happy to see the JANK is ggone for now.

    • For now, jank is quite minimal. Same level of jank you’d find on the Nexus 6P, to be honest. I find that a reboot once a week helps resolve many slowdown issues.

  • We had two Galaxy S7 Edge’s for about 6 weeks now. Still fabulous. Only one minor problem. If you don’t have a case those curved screen edges keep registering my palm when holding, so sometimes I can’t scroll until I adjust my hand grip a bit. Otherwise everything is this article I agree with. It’s currently the best darn phone hands down. Anyone else having this grip issue?

    • I’ve seen that written about everywhere. I don’t own the device though.

    • I have the edge, but i only have that issue (rarely) when im in bed on my side scrolling, but it got better after the april patch 🙂

    • So the point of the Edge display is what? It seems only negative to me, unless you just love the look of it (the look is also a negative to me as it distorts the edges of video/images).

      • For multi-taskers such as myself the edge is a bit easier to swipe than a screen with bezels. I use it everyday to glance or launch my calendar, notes and music player. However for most people the curved screen is subjective and a lot more for aesthetic looks. To pay an extra $100 bucks for just a curved screen, not worth it, but because the GS7E has a bigger battery and screen, well worth it. As far as the grip issue, if Samsung has a patch to fix this then the phone is practically perfect, I’m on Verizon; thus slow on updates so having seen it yet.

  • Everything you said sound great and true.. IP68 is great, Display is awesome on s7 and battery is great too(but not awesome). Software is great on S7 but I still don’t like it. sound feels okay and performance so far so good. I might be getting HTC 10 as I’ve sold my S7 edge but I know S7 edge is best phone around followed by HTC 10 and then LG G5… only thing I lust about S7 is its display that is it.. and I wish HTC 10 had AMOLED display…. than I might be putting HTC 10 first and S7 edge second. I watch movies on smartphone a lot.. and before I don’t feel much watching on LCD display (Moto X pure) but as I’ve Nexus 6p so feels like Videos are hard to watch on Moto X display ( In general on LCD displays).. if you don’t have AMOLED display then you would be okay with LCD display as well but if you happen to feel the difference once then you will always find fault in LCD. BTW if you don’t watch video on your phone then AMOLED have not much advantage over LCD bit better viewing angles sun light legibility.

    • I had it for more than 2 weeks so I didn’t feel any lag and I use a lot of phones and I notice these things a lot like stutter, crashes, lags but in those days I’ve never seen any of such. but before that I had Note 5, S6 edge+, S6 edge green, S6 and Note 4… and I’ve felt lag in every phone. after a week or two they start to lag but S7 edge was smooth till last day when I sold it.

    • Had it for 1 month. As fast as day 1. The nexus 6p hangs and lags worst after 15mins of use

      • Come on. No way. I’ve got both as well and the 6P is definitely still smoother. Not to mention it’s running N for me now.

      • i want what your smoking.. I had teh S7 Edge and sold it because well… its touchwiz.. Yes, touchwiz on the S7 edge has improved from previous galaxy but touchwiz is still touchwiz. My S7 Edge started to lag from time to time. Not always, but it did. Did it lag more then my Nexus 6P? I would say yes it did. My 6P will have some hiccups occasionally but not like the S7 Edge. the S7 Edge is definitely a fast phone overall with the SD 820 (after you restarted the phone after experiencing lag). Its beautiful, feels nice in hand when you hold it. The Camera, and screen were awesome. S7 Edge has the best screen out right now.

        • So you sold it because of a launcher that could just as easily be replaced with another like Nova?

          • Lol you think touchwiz is just a launcher? Your comment tells us you don’t know much about phone software.

I’ve always use nova launcher on all phones I use.

          • Didn’t mean to say launcher. Sorry. My point was that he sold a phone for reasons that are somewhat insignificant in the scope of things, in my opinion.

          • software performance is a big deal. why have a phoen that looks nice, and takes decent photos but phone lags. Give it couple months and its going to lag to the point where you’ll be pissed. I have owned MANY samsung phones in the past and every single one of them lag.

          • Nova can replace their stupid launcher but it doesn’t prevent the “system” from taking up 1.5GB of ram on a fresh boot. Touchwiz and Samsungs bloat services are always running in the background and you can’t kill most of them. That’s what we mean by Touchwiz.

        • The exact same thing I experienced on the S6 edge. Went from a N6 to a S6e, then sold the sammy to buy a Moto X Pure. Samsung really needs to work on optimizing their UI. There’s no reason for the S6e to feel slower in day to day than my M8 (which I also still have). On a fresh boot the S6 was a beast, and the same when benchmarking it. But the random freezes and app crashes and overall lag was just too much and especially for how much they were charging for the 64GB model ($850)

      • Get serious… Hanging and lag is non existent on the 6p. One of the fastest and smoothest phones on the market. The S7 edge is also a great phone which i would consider owning.

        • im serious, the 6P starts to lag after a while of normal use and animations become choppy, especially when you leave an app and leave it in RAM due to the crappy 810. Aside from the jank that starts to appear after being on for a couple of days, just search for it on reddit. many ppl are restarting their 6p daily to not have to deal with that lag.

    • I had that too – just wiped and restored – back to its speedy self. I’m guessing it has to do with the Android updates, but just a guess. Do what I did – you’ll be back to normal.

    • This was certainly my experience with the Galaxy Tab S 8.4…

If there was an S7 Edge GPE, I would be all over it like a bad rash!

  • I unfortunately dropped my phone out of my hoodie pocket when exiting my car. Phone had a case on it since day one, a pretty sturdy case, but it hit the ground on the exposed “edge” part of the phone and cracked quite easily. In the days following the cracks have splintered all over the screen and my screen is increasingly just a broken mess.

I have owned every Samsung Galaxy S Phone as well as every note phone, although this is my first Edge phone. Very disappointed at the vulnerability of the edge design. My note 5 would not have cracked from such a fall in it’s protective case. ( I know because I dropped it many many times without incident ). My first screen crack with a Samsung phone ever…extraordinary since I’ve owned so many over the years.

When my replacement comes, I will keep it in a case, plus have a screen protector on it that I hope will keep the same result from happening when I eventually drop the phone again…many many times.

  • If you upgrade your phone every 6 months then you’ll never have an update issue again. In a perfect world right?

    • Note 4 > G4 > V10 > S7 + S7 Edge in the past year….. buy/sell on swappa and have next to nothing in my upgrades IF you buy low and sell high.

      • Agree with you both. Nexus 6 & Note 4> Nexus 6p and note 5 > s7 edge and kept Note 5. Damn Gear VR. Swappa is a gem CPU379.

  • Typo toward the end, regarding speakers: “It’s placement is bad” – yes, I’m a grammar nazi 🙁

  • Coming from LG G4 and V10 which I thought were awesome. Wow the S7 is just way above them and everything else. I’m with ya on the speaker, but amazing in every other way!

    • Just switched from an iPhone 6 plus. I honestly didn’t think I’d like it for some reason. But I have to say I love this phone. Like you and Tim said I love everything but the speaker.

    • I have the v10 along with the 7 edge. The v10 is a hell of a lot of fun. The edge tops it but lg did a great job with the 10. I hope they come out with a v 11. Love the screen and camera along with the military rating.for being tuff!!!!!

    • I love the v10 it’s a lotta fun to use. The screen is large and & 4gb’s works well with the 808. I hope they come out with a v11 soon. I think it’s one of lg’s best.

  • I love my S7 Edge, but I still find myself reaching for the 6P more often. Both take great photos, but the S7 Edge definitely beats it overall. The fingerprint sensor on the 6P is a lot more consistent though. I find myself getting misreads with the S7 Edge on a daily basis. Before anyone mentions it, I have already setup my fingerprints multiple times and in different positions. I don’t use any of the edge features and I disabled the always on display.

    • You should pay attention to when you try to unlock the phone and it rejects it, and remember how you put that finger on the home button. i’ve redone my FP like 3 times, i remove the old one and add a new one with the experience that i collected from when the phone rejected my FP. now its 95% accurate. i might do it 1 last time to iron out any last position i missed 🙂

        • I dont mind it. If this solution will fix my issue im happy to spare 30mins to make it perfect 🙂

          • What irony ??, the button is not circular which makes it harder for the sensor to always get the same picture of your thumb everytime. Im pretty much teaching the phone how i usually place my thumb when i want to unlock it, which in retun gives me a higher chance at successful unlock 🙂

          • If you have to keep changing how you use the phone to make it work properly, then as I said the phone is training you. If you don’t see the irony of that given that you’re supposedly “training” the fingerprint sensor, I don’t know what to tell you.

          • You dont have to tell me anything. Im showing how i place my finger when i want to unlock, therefore im training it 🙂

          • Exactly, which by now its pretty much trained to every position i use when unlocking 🙂

          • Yes. I only have 1 print registered, and by paying attention for the first couple of days, you will pretty much have 1 print that never misses

          • maybe you don’t but others might. and I do might when I train my phone sensor and it rejects after sometime cuz I didn’t put my finger correctly. why iPhone 6s don’t reject or my nexus 6p why samsung have to reject. I think its bit inferior implementation. even I had better experience with HTC One A9 in term of reliability

      • It defeat the purpose like you have to be so careful to use a phone. it should be seem less, like you didn’t know fingerprint is there.. like on 6p or 6s

        • Not for me. Im more than happy to pay attention to what i do. See i only drop big cash on stuff that i love, so finding out small quirks and fixing them makes me happy. So, its fine by me. Aside from the fact that this phone is so good i cant help but forgive it for this 🙂

          • Maybe you are, maybe you use pin or pattern or password on your phone and I never used to these things and entering password, pin I never liked it. (yes it have advantages like lost or stolen) so when I bought my first phone with fingerprint sensor I thought it would be quick but it was annoying (it was Note 4 actually) so I didn’t use. then came s6 with improved version. it worked for some time like hour but when I use my phone with less attention I get misread which is annoying for me so I turned off. I had same experience till Note 5. then i bought my first ever iPhone 6s and its fingerprint sensor was so fast and like it is not there for me. I press button and its unlocked.. on s7 edge sometime I’ve to press button and I’ve to tap again. to unlock but some time it wakes up and unlock(so inconsistent) and now take Nexus 6p its again great

        • It is learning how to set up your fingerprint so you do NOT have to be so careful later.

    • Same experience with me. I had S7 edge along with Nexus 6p. s7 edge was great over all fast but I felt Nexus 6p bit faster in UI animations and most of all scrolling, beside that I had always issues with fingerprint sensor and its consistent with all samsung phones. from S6 to S7 edge I had all. I turned off this on my S6, s6 edge, Note 5 and s6 edge+ after 2 days of purchase.. but I have not such issues with 6p. BTW I think S7 edges takes faster pictures but not better than Nexus 6p especially when 6p HDR kicks in. 6p pictures feels like have ore detail.

      • I had the same experience last year as well. I never had the S6 Edge, but I did encounter fingerprint issues on the S6, S6 Edge+, and the Note 5.

  • I have to admit, I am pleasantly surprised at how strong the GS7 (Edge especially) is faring one month in. The HTC 10 is the best phone they’ve released in years but it still seems to be to be a half-step behind Samsung, especially considering the asking price. And the LG G5 falls way short of the mark set by the V10, which I still consider the sleeper hit of 2015.

Honestly, I would get the GS7 Edge if I *had* to but I’m going to wait for Moto’s 2016 flagship and the Note 6, along with the Next Nexus.

    • If the note 6 is anything like the edge I will go for it. I can’t imagine 6gb in a phone. Major tom to ground control. How about an 823 processer!!!!!

  • Hate to say it, but my s7 is super laggy. Using a 6p at the moment and it’s completely lag free. Also, the s7 only works about 40% of the time with Android auto in my GMC truck (AA from the factory)…just won’t launch most of the time.

Also, terrified of dropping it since I don’t use cases. It’s one thing to ding it or maybe crack the screen, it’s another to do all of the above AND crack the back too.

      • I just put a dbrand skin on mine and I gotta say I’m a little bit impressed with them. Sure, it won’t do much / anything about cracks but it will prevent scratches.

    • 6p is fast but it is not lag free. sometime app stucks or it delays to unlock phone and other. but its fast and faster than s7 edge I had both and I switches to 6p after week of using s7 edge as scrolling felt faster on 6p and also animations felt faster

  • Download Good Lock from the Galaxy app store. It’s amazing and it will give that stock Android experience

    • I tried it and didn’t like it. Volume adjustments tied ringtone volume to notification volume which I really hated. I may have not given it a fair shake, but I preferred the out of the box experience with Nova launcher. To each his own I guess.

  • I’ve had my S7 Edge since day one now, I love it for the most part except for the battery life. I’m not that heavy of a user, but my phone currently sits at 53% having unplugged it at 9AM and 230 now. I have the Verizon variant with Nova Launcher. What is draining my battery so much?

    • check battery stats for more detailed info. I also recommend checking out the xda page, they were super helpful with my initial battery problems. I usually dont hit 50% until 7pm although I do charge a little bit in my car on my way home from work. but i’m a mid-heavy user ~4h screen on time

      • +1 for checking the battery stats; I found an app that I always install that was using 15% of my battery life!

  • The IP68 is the best. Went to some springs and was snapping photos and 4K under water no worries, dumping it in glasses of water at restaurants to freak people out, and it’s an easy way to clean it off of fingerprints.

    • Do you know if it’s resistant to salt water? I’m not planning on dunking it at the beach but it’d be nice to know if I drop it, it can resist it. So far I see people say yes and no so I don’t what’s the truth

      • Not a good idea to do that, salt water will bring corrosion, stay in pool or a river

        • I Invite you to my beach (just bring your girlfriend, beer and your s7, then you can leave and I can test the s7 and your girl for you)…

      • I took mine surfing and it was fine…You just have to wash it with fresh water after or the moisture detection will say its wet and not allow you to charge you phone. That also applies to taking it in pools. Nothing a fresh shower won’t fix.

        • Basically yes and no is what I’m seeing lol. At least from your experience I can rest assured if it happens it won’t be the end

      • I wouldn’t, but it’s nothing a decent clean can’t fix.

There are plenty of high grade, no-residue, plastic friendly electronic cleaning solvents on the market.

      • My S5 resist a few drop into my saltwater fish tank. But usb port was hidden. With the S7 and its exposed usb metal port, I don’t think I’m gonna try. I have a lot of stainless stuff that have been ruined by saltwater from my fish tank. You can maybe give it a short dive, but you’ll have to use a lot of fresh water to clean it after…

    • So you are that guy dunking you phone in water to freak people out….So am I hah!!a its just too much fun seeing people flip when its under water and it is the best way to clean it off.

      • IKR, i’ve used my S7e on therme pool during my trip to Budapest. People’s faces were like (0.0′)

    • How about duel pixel camera & wireless. I owned two turbo’s 1&2 the v10 & 6p. The focus and speed on the edge is like apple pie & milk. I think the edge is one of the best ever made. Samsung really listened to the consumers. I think more companys should listen to us!!!!!! There is nothing wrong with great choices.

  • I have the S7Edge for almost a month, couldnt be happier, already on April security patch. its blazing fast, battery life is nthing short of impressive. I can confidently say, i’ve never been overall happy with a phone li i have been with this one. its Absolute Perfection, i can’t find a single flaw so far for my usage !!!

        • Same. I really hope these changes go into the Android N update. since that’s basically the only “drawback” you can have against this phone !

      • Its the international G935F, damn amazing piece of beauty. I can almost feel the love that went into making it 🙂

        • You are a disgusting pig who likes to talk without any backup. Jackass moron. Samsung Whore. Samsung Faggot. How’s that for a start? We’ll have fun.

          LOL, LEL, LUL.

    • I agreed, S7 Edge (Verizon) is the best phone I have ever owned, hands down, couldn’t be happier. No update has ever been life changing, so when Android N comes, it comes, this phone does everything I need it to do.

      • N is pretty much the only version of android that won’t improve TW in a dramatic manner !

      • The i phone 7 is the only phone that’s got a shot against the edge. There the only phone that cares about ip ratings of 68. I love wireless and specs on the g5 & 10 are not even close. But they demand big bucks!!!!!

  • “And there you have it, my month with the Galaxy S7 Edge in a nutshell. The performance, battery, and camera are still fantastic,” and that’s why it wins. Android N i’m not worried about. already have multi window on my S7 😉

    • That’s the beauty of samsung phones. So many features like multi window, shrinking the screen for one handed use, etc. Not getting the latest Android version is a non factor for me. My Note 4 with 5.1.1 has way more useful features than a Nexus 6p with N beta.

      • Updates arent just features. They also include security patches and bug fixes. So tgey are still important no matter how much you tell yourself they are not

    • Exactly. But it seems like most Android fans in the Nexus camp scream fast updates fast updates. When N is already a non factor. I still haven’t seen anything I would be happy to upgrade to it for.

      • I have a Nexus 6 & I’m considering upgrading to an S7 Edge. I’m over having the “fastest” updates. I’m all for having the best features & the S7 Edge is on top of my list.

        • I have always tended forward Nexus or close to stock implementations, like moto or Sony. But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the s7 edge! I bought and returned the s6 last year in favor of going back to my Sony Z3 compact. But the s7 has really surprised me! With material theme and Nova, I don’t feel like I’m that car from stock. And I don’t miss flashing ROMs and rooting that much; the locked down bootloader on my T-Mobile s7 is disappointing though. Would like to maybe have that option… But overall, I’m very happy with this device! You wont be disappointed!

          • One other thing; don’t know if this is an option for you but I’ve heard the exynos variant has even better performance and battery life; I think that’s what Kellen is using. I went through T-Mobile so exynos was not an option.

          • Yeah I don’t think so either. I’m going through T-Mobile so it’s not an option lol

        • If you want the best the edge rocks super fast & focus on camera is the best. Spend the money and don’t look back. Monthly payments make it very easy. The g5 and 10 are very good phones but the edge is it. Funny thing is I was never a samsung fan I just wanted the best. Don’t forget the trade in program with monthy payments!!!!!!

      • Because with a carrier-branded phone, when there’s a bug or significant flaw, it will take several months to get fixed. Or you could end up with Samsung dropping support after 1 year like they did to my tablet.

        • They have committed to 2 years on their flagships. S5 is on Marshmallow now so that commitment stands.

          • My S5 isn’t on Marshmallow yet T.T probably due to using a less popular provider though so I can’t fault samsung

          • I don’t know that provider. But mostly now, carriers are the hold up I would suspect. Same as Att, every other major carrier has pushed it out but them and they were one of the first to soak test it.

        • Apple dropped support with my original iPad pretty quickly too and you got the iPad 2 that is on iOS 9.

      • I think Jellybean was the last update I really thirsted for. That was the one with “Google Now”, right?

      • For Samsung being as big as they are, they should have the $$$ to pay developers to roll out updates a bit faster. HTC is able to do it just fine which is why my HTC M8 recieved Marshmallow before they rolled out the update to the GS6.

        • Please understand that updates aren’t 100% just depending on the OEM. Carriers play a part also and some times with the delay.

          • Been with Android since day one, and 18 phones later it’s safe to say I understand the software update cycle. Samsung has never been known for their software skills. Just fancy screens, and cameras.

    • I have a 6P and fastest updates aren’t all it’s cracked up to be especially when TW already has some of the ‘new’ features already baked in that Android N is just now adding. I’m looking forward to the Note 6 and keeping my 6P as a backup…

      • I went from a Nexus 6 to an S6 edge, and as nice as it was to have the extra goodies, the phone felt bogged down and way slower in day to day than my older N6.

      • Wise choice and i’m sure the note 6 is going to be a great phone and their talking 6gb. The 6p is a very nice phone. What a backup!!!!

    • The problem I have is that Samsung phones tend to slow down after awhile. And than when you finally get an update, it makes the phone worse. I’m still bitter at Samsung for the lollipop update to my old note 4. Totally trashed that phone.

      • Doing a factory reset isn’t that hard. Many Nexus users flash custom ROMs or factory images and have to set up their devices again quite often.

        • Oh I did. Multiple times. Still nothing. That update was horrible. And yeah, I flash Roms all the time on my current 6P.

        • A factory reset can’t fix poor software optimization. That’s why my Moto X Pure, Nexus 6, and M8 felt faster than my S6. Great hardware needs great software.

      • The gs5 was the same way. Lollipop killed my gfs gs5 she was so pissed. She bought the s7 and loves it but only time will tell if they can keep up performance. My note 5 has been solid tho

      • Really? I got my marshmallow update on GS6 and it feels like a new phone. It has gotten so much better. So I’m not sure what you are talking about..

        • You know how bad it’s been typically for Samsung. Don’t act like you don’t know how it’s traditionally been for Samsung and their terrible updates.

        • My S6 edge was terrible for the first few months. After Marshmallow rolled out it helped my friend’s S6. By that point I had already sold mine. It shouldn’t have taken nearly a full device cycle for Samsung to make their phone as fast as it should have been on day one. In a nutshell and from my experience Samsung’s software feels the sloppiest (maybe second to LG). Whereas my Nexus and HTC devices always feel fast. Samsung makes fantastic A+ hardware, but their software always feels a few steps behind where they need to be.

      • Really? My Note 4 feels just as snappy as the day that I got it. I honestly don’t see a reason yet to upgrade from my Note 4. Also, like Tim said, if you’re not using Nova Prime you’re doing it wrong lol. Seriously put Nova on it and it’ll change your phone. I love everything about the Note 4

      • My Note 4 was a champ for a year and a half before upgrading to S7Edge, not sure what you are talking about. To be fair though, I don’t load my phone with games or crappy apps, like facebook or angry birds.

      • Slowdown is more an Android issue I believe. I’ve had multiple Android phones (Nexus 4, Moto X, Nexus 6), and they all slowed down over time. A factory reset seems to buy more time, but the slowdown is much faster than when the phone was completely fresh. It’s part of the reason I keep upgrading.

One factor is the amount of ram a phone has, and apps getting more demanding. I think also the filesystem itself may start slowing down over time, depending on how it’s used and the device itself.

But yeah, luckily new phones come out regularly, so we always have a better option to upgrade to 😀

      • My S6edge only gets better w/ 6.0.1, S5 users on 6.0 reports good improvement, maybe garbage updates are a thing of the past too *finger crossed*

      • My Galaxy S6 remained as fast as the day I bought it and Marshmallow made it even better, especially the battery life!

      • Lollipop trashed my Nexus 5 so it wasn’t an issue exclusive to Samsung by any means. Only got resolved with 5.1.1.

      • I updated my Galaxy S5 to LOLLIFLOP February of last year when Verizon spit (I mean that literally) it out. Totally trashed my phone and everyone else’s S5 out there. The update that followed in late March, 2015 that was supposed to fix all the F**KUPS barely did anything. The 3-Way finger pointing marathon that ensued with Verizon pointing at Samsung, Samsung pointing at Google, Google pointing at Samsung did nothing to make me feel any better. Finally got the phone replaced and have stuck with KitKat ever since. Verizon tech support both in the stores and at customer service say I’m doing the right thing by not upgrading the OS. Apparently, the very first batch of Galaxy S5’s to come out had no issues with Lolliflop. Obviously, Samsung changed something right after that 1st batch.

  • I’ve been enjoying mine. Really fast and snappy. No lag. I dig the curvature on the back for ergonomics, just hope we can get N sooner rather than later
