Thanks to the FCC, we have learned that NVIDIA is working on a new tablet (product number: P2290W), possibly a follow-up to the SHIELD Tablet and SHIELD Tablet K1. While many details remain confidential due to NVIDIA’s successful filing of the Request for Confidentiality slip, we have learned a few things by digging through the hundred plus page reports, available for all to see on the FCC website.
First, the dimensions of the tablet are 8.58″Β (L), 4.84″Β (W), 0.31″Β (H), it weighs 350 grams, and it featured a 5,100mAh battery at the time of testing. Furthermore, it features dual-band WiFi connectivity, and also features a microUSB port; not USB Type-C. As you could probably guess, the tablet features Bluetooth LE connectivity, too. For specs, that’s all we know at this time, with no specifics being mentioned regarding display size, processor, or amount of RAM.Β
Keep in mind, FCC filings are never a sure thing, meaning it could be a while until we see this product, if ever. Two years ago, a SHIELD Portable-like controller device entered the FCC, which many thought was a SHIELD 2. Now, with it being 2016 and NVIDIA going full steam with Android TV set-top boxes, we will probably never know.
Time to share your wish list. If NVIDIA is working on a SHIELD Tablet sequel, a true sequel that is, what would you want to see from it? For me, I’d like an 8″ display, Tegra X1, 4GB of RAM, Android N, and a big ol’ battery. Yup, that’s what I want.

What I would like from the new Tablet is 8GB of RAM, 6GB minimum. Since we’re not seeing this Tablet any time soon, it should be paired up with the Cortex-A73 Processor (due to release in 2017) along with their unannounced Tegra P1 SoC with 256-core Pascal GPU. A minimum 64GB storage option to 256GB.
To be honest though, I rather see them make an untethered HMD for VR. Get us the Shield VR, Nvidia! OLED 4K display for each eye using the Pascal architecture on a SoC.
Pascal is out. Am I the only one NOT wanting the X1 but the new Gen GPU?
Tegra X1, 4 to 6 gigs ram, big battery, big storage, and bring back LTE and the stylus (with a slot to hold it).
I got my kid the original shield table with LTE. It’s a great tablet but I’ve been holding out for the X1 update. The K1 was a letdown. Sure it’s cheap but with no LTE it limits the usefulness to me while on the road (I really don’t want to also carry a mobile hotspot if I can help it.
basically i just want a 7 to 8 ” tablet just like the shield, the same in every way but have it look like a big HTC one M7 (aluminum build) and have IR blaster and be able to run dolphin flawlessly , this is all i ask , come on nvidia stop wating time with the self driving car meme and get to building it
“For me, Iβd like an 8β³ display, Tegra X1, 4GB of RAM, Android N, and a big olβ battery. Yup, thatβs what I want.”
this plus an metal build something that is identical to the HTC one M7 from the front and has an IR blaster and retaind the SD card slot and stylus of the original shield
I don’t understand how a “gaming” tablet can not have wifi n when my 2013 phone does…
Not sure what you mean, but the Shield tablets have always had WiFi.
WiFi 802.11ac maxes out at about 150mbs, while WiFi 802.11n uses double the bandwith to increase max speeds to about 300mbs…
Are you sure? I was pretty sure that ac is supposed to be faster than n
Yes, I am sure. You may be thinking of g. n>ac>g.
I own a Shield tablet…
According to some brief reading on Google (see one example here: http://www.securedgenetworks.com/blog/802-11ac-vs-802-11n-Infographic-Which-wireless-solutions-are-better) and my personal experience in the IT field ( I am only in sales, not an engineer but do have familiarity with these sorts of things) I think you are mistaken. Wireless ac is faster and has more capacity than n.
You are correct! For some reason I had them firmly reversed in my mind… My apologies!
“For me, Iβd like an 8β³ display, Tegra X1, 4GB of RAM, Android N, and a big olβ battery. Yup, thatβs what I want.” <- like he said π
I’m hoping to get rid of all my micro USB charges and have only USB C all around the house so USB C would be a must for me
Dream tablet would be 12″ 2560×1600 AMOLED display, Front facing stereo speakers with 2 HTC 10 style subwoofers on the bottom, and another 2 speakers on the back like the idol 4 line, Tegra X1, 6gb of ram, 256gb of storage with micro SD, and near stock Android.
The unicorn carried it across the rainbow to the pot of gold π
It’s definitely too small for my tastes.
Ehem…. That’s what she said
Since it seems like no new nexus tablet, beef up the internals and call it a day. Shield already gets quick updates. Update ram and processor along with battery and price it at $199 like the K1
I’d start with the X1, 4 GB ram, 64 GB internal memory, and 8″ display. I would also like a redesigned power button that’s easier to navigate.
A lot of people disagree with me, but I like my tablets in full… 10.1 inches please. 8 and 9 inches just doesn’t seem necessary with a 5.7inch screen on the Nexus 6P. I read a lot of research papers on my tablet and the screen real estate is much appreciated. Please and thank you.
Why not get a pixel c tablet? They’ve gone on sale already once if i remember correctly and the square root of 2 aspect ratio would be great for reading research papers since it’s the same ratio as paper.
There are quality control issues with the Pixel C. Some units’ displays aren’t registering scrolling very well apparently. Some only noticed as time went on through extensive use. I did my research on it already π
Why I went with the Ipad Pro. Lol.
like Melissa explained I’m amazed that any body can earn $9357 in 1 month on the internet . read the article https://www.facebook.com/Canada-US-UK-Australia-and-New-Zealand-online-jobs-1603538373295103/app/190322544333196/
I’m hoping they don’t increase the size. I can still fit this thing in the front pocket of my khakis. Handy for a lot of reasons like when I want to play a few rounds of my favorite game in the bathroom at work. π
Faster processor, more RAM, more disk space, IR blaster, built-in Chrome-cast and, what the heck–how ’bout an FM receiver just to piss off the competition and prove once again that NVIDIA ROCKS!!!
OH Nvidia Nexus Tablet, Nvidia Nexus Tablet, Nvidia Nexus Tablet…….please please please!
It’s called the Nexus 9 π
Pixel C? It’s got an X1 in it.
The k1 would be perfect if it just had more storage options. They banked too much on SD cards. Every time I try and format my SD as internal storage it causes lag issues as well as some apps just not working right.
I’ll admit I don’t use my Shield tab for much more than a few games, but I haven’t noticed any difference in lag after I formatted my SD card as internal storage.
In all fairness, that could be the SD card you are using too.
64gb sandisk uhs-1, that’s one of the fastest cards
While I don’t want to besmirch the good name of sandisk, I’ve had 3 of their 32GB uhs-1 microSD cards and 1 64GB uhs-1 cards go bad on me and the first indication was the speed started slowing way down, then the card would un-mount itself. Sandisk was really good about replacing them each time, but it is possible your card is going bad.
It did just go bad on me, replacement is installed. Personally I think the format as internal option is too rough on SD cards they aren’t meant to have data written to them constantly like that. I just have it set up at portable storage atm, no issues that way
Still love my Shield tab. Would just like to see an IR blaster, AMOLED display, and bigger/better battery life, along with a 2016 spec bump, of course.
Why are people still hung up on IR blasters, especially on a tablet that you are not going to use to fool around in a bar or something? I control my Samsung HDTV, Onkyo stereo, Tivo, and Sony Bluray player all from a single app on either my Nexus 7 2013 or my Droid Turbo 2. Most modern electronics have IP based control nowadays.
I have kids, kids lose and/or break everything they touch. After having an IR blaster on my phone, it has been a godsend so I’m not searching for the remote literally every time I go to watch TV. Using the Anymote app in the play store, it’s basically a Harmony remote that I can configure macros for as well, so I have have one single page/remote that controls all of my equipment perfectly. My speaker bar, although it supports CEC, so I can control it through my TV (which I can control by IP), but only for volume and not for changing inputs or adjusting sound modes. Same thing for when I get in bed and want to watch TV, but the wife is sleeping on the remote or it’s buried/lost somewhere. Also, I have some window and floor fans that have IR remotes, so I can control those from my phone as well. It’s incredibly handy just around my house, and going from my One M8 to a Nexus 6P shortly, I would like to have a tab of my own with an IR blaster to offset this loss a bit.
I’m having a very hard time resisting the snarky response to “wife sleeping on remote”. Actually, I think that is snarky enough and let’s people use their imagination.
Nice, I hope they stick with that size since I LOVE my Shield Tablet K1, only complaint really is that the way the speaker grills are they trap specs of dust I have to blow out with a can of air sometimes. That and 16GB internal is unfortunate, though at least adaptable storage exists now. Nvidia is one of the only companies making good, smaller tablets and updating them with near-stock Android, that plus the awesome magnet cover!
8.9″ Nexus 9-style/size would be ideal IMO. Type-C would be absolutely awesome but I guess I am going to give up on ever seeing a high-end Android tablet that’s not the Pixel C for the forseeable future. Samsung’s Tab S2 refresh is a total joke and that’s likely to be the only other “high end” Android tablet release this year.
I bet this Nvidia will still feature 16GB storage + microSD slot too.
Pixel c is pretty swank though, with the developer discount code it’s hard to beat. Even without the discount, it’s a really really nice piece of hardware
I kinda want a tegra x2
