At last, Google has posted the ATAP session from Google I/O in its entirety to YouTube, and seriously, you all need to watch it. It’s the future. During this hour-long session, the ATAP team goes over many of the projects they are working to bring to consumers, such as Project Jacquard (smart fabrics), Project Soli (mini radars that make smartwatches the shiznit), and of course, all of the details regarding Project Ara. It’s all there, delivered in a way only Google could do.
Watch it and then embrace it, for it is the not-too-distant future most likely.

really awesome. I find myself interested in the Jacquard stuff….I dont know why. Soli looks awesome! ARA – confused….I was excited, but to know I would have to buy a new frame to actually upgrade is just pointless to me. It shouldnt be that way. I hope they find a way to make this work better so I can have a frame for longer, and worry about upgrading the modules.

Hey, can you guys write a big piece on software stability and optimization to get Google’s attention? I feel as though every update breaks something. BT breaks or wifi slows to a crawl, battery becomes really crappy, the device starts lagging/stuttering after an update (etc. etc,). There is now a risk to updating your device to the latest software which is really dumb, imo.
New features are great and all but what good are they when the update breaks something else on the phone? I feel as though Google has forgotten about this and would like to see them putting optimization and stability in EVERY update and assuring us all their updates (including the monthly security ones) are optimized 100%.

I’m just not on the hype train for any of this stuff. Jackets? Gestures? Meh.
Now, I agree – this is the groundwork research, and 1st gen. And I’m glad that Google has enough money to explore these concepts, because it benefits everyone through more competition. But as a consumer, this is about as exciting as 3D TV was.
the only ‘killer app’ for the modular phone is the replaceable camera. The other stuff I’ve seen that plugs in, while novel, is not something I would be actively seeking if the form factor of the phone is 1.25-1.5x the thickness of other flagship devices. I’m basing this on what I’ve seen of the phone in the video, and yes, I’m sure they’ll thin it a bit…But it won’t be Samsung/LG/Nexus thin.
The other part of modular phone that was somewhat interesting is now removed – swapping CPUs. I don’t know much about phone hardware other than what’s rattled off for the latest Snapdragon being used, but it leaves me to believe the ‘motherboard’ (whatever the equivalent on a phone vs. desktop computer) is too intertwined with the CPU to be able to drop a new one in. Oh, and then there’s the RAM. Can’t upgrade the RAM either.
If there was a phone that was a bit thicker where I could replace the CPU/RAM/Battery at year two, I’d be down. But right now, this just isn’t compelling.
ARA just sounds soo cool in theory. Imagine having a bunch of modules you can share anytime with a bunch of friends. Nice.
