Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Well, I just bought one for my wife who still has a 16GB Moto X 1st gen. It’s showing its age in updates, or lack thereof, from VZW. She’s going to hate not having Drive Assist.

  • FYI Google extended it’s $150 discount for the 5X to July 10. They make it clear on their website (fi.google.com) and DL readers have verified that you are only required to pay for one month of service after which you can leave Project Fi with no early termination fees. The cheapest monthly plan is $20 so that means you can get an unlocked 5X for:
    16GB $199 + $20 = $229
    32GB $249 + $20 = $269

    • I used this to buy a 5X and I used Project Fi for such a short period of time (3 days) that google refunded my money.

      • Son of a gun, really? And they let you keep the device at the discounted price? What plan did you choose/how much did they refund you? Just the $20?

        • I picked the $30 plan. I was legit hoping Project Fi would work in my area (it didn’t) cancelled it after the three days and they refunded the remaining data I didn’t use and the remaining days on the 30 day plan. Kept the phone and use it on Verizon now.

          • So they most likely didn’t refund you for using for such a short time. They most likely refunded you for it not working in your area, IMO.

          • Correct but more specifically they are refunding me for what I didn’t use.

    • You are better off just buying a 5x outright for $229. You don’t have to deal with the $20 (plus tax, which is a few bucks), porting your number, then porting back, and being without a usable number for a few days.

      • Or you could just buy it with a different Google account, so you can buy it with a new number and not have to port your number. that way you will not be without a usable number for any amount of time.

        • Precisely my thoughts. I don’t use my Verizon number anways; only my GV number which is under my Google Apps account. Since I can’t use a Google Apps account with Project Fi anyways, I was thinking I would just get a new Project Fi phone number under my personal Gmail, cancel, pop in my Verizon SIM with unlimited data plan, then I’d be free to sign into any Google account I want on a new unlocked 5X.

        • That’s a good suggestion. Personally I don’t think it’s worth it to save $5-$7, but if someone wants to buy it from Google that’s an option

          • For the convenience that Google gets you if you ever have a problem? I’d pay more for that.

      • You don’t need to port your number, just activate the service. Buying it from B&H might still come out a few bucks ahead without taxes, but if somebody really wants to buy from Google there’s no “hassle” involved there.

        • That’s true if you use a carrier number, but if you use a GV number you’d have to port it

        • Agreed. I would’t port either. Just give it whatever number so I can test Fi, and then cancel the service and just use the phone with my existing carrier SIM.

  • Hoping Google doesn’t F up the next Nexi devices like this again. First ones in a few generations with no wireless charging and while on the all metal 6p, ok fine, but this one is plastic, would have added a dollar at most to the manufacturing cost.

And I know, then it would have a feature the higher priced 6p doesn’t. Still, for me that alone means no sale, I won’t do no wireless charging again, ever. Especially now that my new truck has it built-in from the factory.

Plus, the screen on this is just not good. Can’t even view it with polarized lenses on in landscape…just, black.

When it drops to $150, maybe just to see / play with new versions of android, but anything over $200 is too much for this thing.

  • Zero complaints about this phone since the camera update. It performs like a champ and I have never had storage issues. 16gb model, but I am reasonable and store everything on the cloud (Google Photos, Play Music, etc.). There is no need for more storage anymore.

    • “There is no need for more storage anymore” … if you have unlimited data. For those that don’t, SD storage for photos, music, etc., rules.

      • Agreed. While I have WiFi most places I go, it’s pretty ridiculous when people act like everyone has an infinite amount of data everywhere. Why not have 4GB phones with just enough room for the OS? Put everything in the cloud!

        • That’s exactly what carriers want us to start doing because for them it’s: “Cha Ching!”

      • I have a 1gb plan, and never use it all. I take tons of pictures and listen to music or podcasts for 10 hours a day.

        • You stream music and podcasts *over your data plan* for 10 hours a day and never use up your 1gb plan? BS!

          • You said you store everything in the cloud in your first comment, then you said you take tons of pictures, and listen to music and podcast for 10 hours a day which judging by your first comment, you do not play them locally because you store everything in the cloud, thus you must stream them from the cloud. You also specifically mention your 1GB plan with no mention of WiFi usage, so it is completely reasonable that @MicroNix:disqus thinks you mean you do all that over your 1GB mobile data which is highly unlikely.
Maybe you could elaborate on how you do all that with a 1GB data plan, because it does not sound possible without relying on local storage/WiFi.

    • “There is no need for more storage anymore”

      For you

I don’t think I could possibly disagree more, for most people 16gb is NOT enough.

I don’t even store much media on my phone at all, and in fact on my current phone with an sd card EVERYTHING is on the sd card and yet my 32gb internal storage is more than half full.

    • Outside of memory, it’s a pretty sweet device in the $200 range. Yeah, 2GB of RAM is low but it seems to fly on N, Nexus Imprint is great, I find the size of the phone to be in the sweet spot (primary reason I didn’t go 6P)… does it cut corners? definitely, but for a budget device you could do a lot worse.

    • Good battery life, smooth as butter, one of the best cameras on the market, fingerprint scanner, Nexus update schedule, usable size

      Your math is wrong

      • Good Battery, Smooth as butter? . . . I don’t think you’re talking about this phone based on the reviews. Not at all.

        • He’s probably one of those strange people that post comments about phones based on his own personal use/experience rather than based on other peoples reviews. So weird, huh?

        • I have the phone bro.. Updates have done wonders for it in every way. Certainly wasnt worth the starting price last fall, but for barely more than $200 it is a great deal

And yes battery life is bareeely less than my 6p. So Id say thats pretty good. And it literally doesnt lag or stutter, so yes. Butter

        • I have to agree with you. I just got the 5x, loaded on Android N preview 4, and there is noticeable lag compared to my Pixel C also running preview 4.

          • My theory? It didnt sell well initially because it was so janky at release. This left them with an overabundance of devices, and now even though issues have been fixed, its too late to get sales at the original price point. Also, $120 price drop in 9 months really isnt that crazy… some of the galaxy s6 devices have been popping up in the $300 price range, and the note 5 was the other day as well. Thats like a $400 price drop in a similar amount of time

  • FYI: The 32GB Nexus 5x (only in white i believe) is $269 after promo code DADSDAY16 on BH Photo

A few days ago that promo code brought the price down to $249, but it looks like theyve adjusted it. Still a good deal, and I wouldnt recommend people buy a 16gb phone these days. Apps, photos, system, etc all take up more space than ever, and in a few years if you still own the phone, itll be even worse.

    EDIT: Link added http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1194573-REG/lg_lgh790_a3uswh_nexus_5x_32gb_smartphone.html

  • A 16gb Nexus really was a bad idea. The only reason other phones can get away with 16gb is because they generally have an SD slot.

    • I agree and think no phone should be made at the 16GB level, definitely without expandable storage, but I’ve been able to make it work. Photos are always backed up on WiFi (I don’t take too many to begin with), I store a handful of albums of whatever I’m really into at the moment, and use most of the rest for apps and games with a little left over. It sucks in 2015/2016 that phones are released at this level with no sd slot, but depending on usage you can make it work if you want a low price on a pretty sweet device (IMO)… but yeah, spring for 32 if you can.

    • I just got a 16GB 5x for $199, and after loading up all my photos, downloading playlists and podcasts, etc I have about 2GB free. I can easily make due with 16GB, and for the price it’s not bad seeing as how a $750 iPhone 6s + is only 16GB I don’t feel that cheated. Here’s hoping this year no 16GB phones are released.

      • You can make it work for only so long. Add more photos and videos, download a few more awesome apps and then try an OS upgrade. Now you have to find what you can remove, even if temporary, just to upgrade the phone. Even on the iPhone with 16GB this is an issue.

    • I have 47 apps installed on my 16GB 5X and have 8GB left. I can get by using Google Photos backup and T-Mobile free music streaming. I don’t have any games installed though.

      • Data Restrictions and no wifi.
But yea I know what your’e saying, I do the local spotify and have my collection uploaded to google music.

          • Data? Unless you have unlimited or something like t-mo you are paying for data. Compare that to having it all on SD and using zero data to play your collection. Rather foolish to stream your own collection.

          • I guess…but then nothing on a phone is ever free that uses any network traffic.

You could also think of GPM streaming of your own library as a way to store your entire library and then pull down what you want/can fit over WiFi.
That being said..I stream music all day, 5-6 days a week on my phone via cell and I have maybe once crossed 3GB one time in a month.

          • Again, you are pulling it back down to your phone as you just stated so why have it in the cloud in the first place even if over wifi? For your own music collection, streaming will never beat SD. What do you do when you are on a plane? Pay for wifi????

          • The best of both worlds is to upload your music and playlists to Play Music, then just download your playlists. This way your music is synced between all your devices, and you don’t have to manually move music back and forth from your SD card.

          • I don’t have to move music back and forth from my 64GB SD card. That’s the whole point. Plus when I get a new phone I just swap the SD card and all comes over to the new phone. Best of all, I have it where I don’t have wifi or data. Again, Google thinking they can get rid of SD cards is a very poor and bad decision.

          • I think you are in the minority about this. Most everyone streams their music now, including techy hardware geeks like the commenters on this site.

I understand there are a select few that love their huge SD cards (and they are VERY vocal about it), but the ease of use of managing everything at the cloud level can’t be denied.
