Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Does the Moto Z pull from the JBL Soundboost battery once the Z’s internal battery is drained? I’ve been seeing the JBL mod battery level stay the same while I’ve been using the Z’s battery.

  • Is it just me or is the battery on the Moto Z Droid Force smaller than the current Droid Turbo 2??? Oh but wait, we’ll sell you a Moto Mod to increase your battery. Seems like the new way for manufactures to get your money.

  • Kellex, When you have the battery pack installed, and you are charging, does it affect turbo charging? Do both the phone and battery pack have turbo charging abilities? Or does the battery pack keep the phone from charging at the turbo rate?

  • Motorola pulled an Apple before Apple pulled an Apple by removing the headphone jack.

  • I feel bad for motorola because they being really ambitious with this phone. I really like the mods but there’s a lot of risky factors. We still don’t know the pricing of the mods our even the phones for that matter. Plus devs still have to work on software updates for the phone and the mods as well. I just can’t see that this phone will get system updates in a timely manner. I’d rather wait for samsung since they should be putting the snapdragon 821 processor in the note 7.

  • I can’t say I’m terribly impressed. I’m sure I’m not the only one that sees this as a money grab for Lemoto. Won’t be much of a money grab since the add-ons are insanely priced.

  • Did I see that right? No piece of glass protecting the lens from getting covered with pocket lent/dirt on that projector? Maybe there is a compartment in it to carry q-tips.

    • Extended battery with Qi and a 3.5mm jack. Extenal DAC thrown in there would be icing on the cake. That’s the only conceivable way I would buy one of these. That said, I am slightly impressed so far with the base package but Lenovo will of course ruin things with late/no software updates, VZW exclusivity, and a lack of overpriced mods that add functionality that should have been there in the first place (Qi, 3.5mm).

  • Kellex, please clarify that whether Mods charge the internal battery or they act as the secondary native battery (I’m assuming the second case, atleast if the phone battery is full?)

    • It uses the mod’s battery when the phone is at 100%, the mod basically keeps the phone at 100% as the phone relies entirely on the mod until it is dead, then the phone uses its own battery.

      • So logically this means battery cycles (for phone’s non replaceable battery) are saved, right.. and this system is better than a battery pack (which are more affordable but lead to faster internal battery degradation)

        • Battery pack cases simply charge your phone up to 100% and continue to charge your battery, and for most of them, you can’t stop it. Some pack cases come with on/off switches. Actually, those cases on average give you about 3000 mAh of battery on average, and most cost about $70-$90. Now, the zero lemon is an exception, that costs $110 I believe, but offers about 8000 mAh of battery. But that thing is so clunky you may as well have a damned stupid tablet with call capability. This mod is a solution. Ok, if it is connected and the phone battery is below 100%, the mod will charge the phone to 100% then the phone shuts off its internal battery so that the mod can keep the phone at 100% capacity, like some fast chargers. If the mod is used 24/7 and/or connected when the phone has a full battery, the mod effectively never charged the phone. And I don’t know who in the world would complain about the 11.4mm thickness if the phone (not referring to you, Homes, just making an example) unless you are one of those fools who only uses beats audio products and only buys Samsung galaxy phones. I didn’t hear anyone complaining about the 11mm thickness of the Moto X pure, and that thing has a small (for what it packs) 3000 mAh unit, which I also heard very few complaints about. And that thing had a 5.7″ 1440p IPS LCD to power, and a 20nm processor instead of a 14nm. Without the mod, the Z should get the same uptimes as the X pure, but a 4,820 mAh battery with an 11.4mm thick phone is great. Sure, some Chinese brands have managed to stuff 5,000 mAh batteries into 9mm thick phones, but what FLAGSHIP has this and what will probably be an all round good experience?

  • Still astonished that moto didn’t do a shell that adds wireless charging. Instead you have to go 3rd party with a extra battery pack attached.

Seems like that would have been a very obvious one to do, guess not for moto.

    Lame.

    • They said wireless charging will be an option, from what I remember. I’m guessing it’s just not going to be released at launch.

  • Best Mod idea is definitely the battery packs because the phone is still slim. I personally wouldn’t buy the speakers, or the projector.

I just like the phone doesn’t in general, don’t really care for mods.

    • Me neither. First of all, I have no interest in having 16 different phone-sized items to carry around or keep track of. Second, they are more money that you have to spend. It seems like it’s just either adding things that should be built in (like a better speaker), or things that can be done with cases (like a battery pack or changing the look of your phone).

      • I don’t know How many times people have stated this, but battery packs aren’t equal to these mods, they never will be. Problem with battery packs (if not included in the case), you have to carry them around like a separate thing, Mods remains attached to phone itself. Battery Packs lead to increased usage of phone’s battery cycles, while Mods act as a true battery extension, meaning that Phone considers it to be a native battery and takes power from mods directly

        • That’s an extremely good point. I would almost rather have a system like this verses with LG came up with on the G5. On the other hand. I still prefer the conventional ” peel off a back door & slide a new battery in” .

The Note 4 and the V10 were the final & best executions of the old way of building phones combined with ptemium build/materials.

          • <<o. ✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤✤:::::::!ja190s:….,……

    • Plus most people already have bluetooth speakers now and headphones. Not to mention battery packs. Plus I’d be worried buying these then find out next year’s devices or the year after these won’t work on them which will probably happen

      • If they kept compatibility for two consecutive model years that would be sufficient for me

    • You can have over 4820mah once you add in their battery motomod, with the phone being 11.4 mm thick.

Everyone here bitches about battery life, but show me another flagship class phone that has that big of a battery in that small of a package.

      • sorry, Motoz Z itself DOES NOT have “that big of a battery in that small of a package”.
11.4 mm phone-case is probably the thickest phone out there and “its” 4,820 mAh battery is not built in.

+ SAMSUNG Galaxy S7 Edge has 3,600 mAh BUILT IN into a 7.7 mm body.
+ if you are a fan of no-name Chinese clone makers: Gionee Marathon M5 Plus has 5,020 mAh BUILT IN into its 8.4 mm body.

        • The Moto X pure is 11.06 mm thick and I don’t remember anyone complaining about its thickness. This combo packs alot more battery capacity into an overall smaller frame and yet is only .36 mm thicker. Doesn’t seem that extreme to me, but I’ll need to hold it in my hand to know for sure.

    • agree.
people want excellent battery inside their phones, not as a bulky +$50/+6mm case.

and until we see a smartphone with PC-like replaceable RAM, SCREEN and CPU independently, let’s forget the word “modular”.

  • Are the speakers in the soundboost tilted up? Otherwise, it seems with the kickstand open the sound is being directed into the table.
