  • I cannot see the unlocked version on sale anywhere. Best buy is all about through Verizon and Google store says “Unavailable”. Is there anyone facing same issue?

  • One thing I want readers of this site to know is, there are people who do not want to update their phones — no matter what. I’ve even met iOS users who avoid updating at all cost. I also have friends who thought the world is ending after their Moto X was updated to a new version of Android. There are many reasons behind, but it could summarize into one sentence: people hate changes.

  • Let the sizzle die down, and see where it lands. What you can count on is attempted success, there’s lots of things to prove, let’s see if they do.

        • They will not have to. Verizon pixels may preload 2-3 carrier apps from the point of setup, but I’m sure these will be easily removable not only on your device but also via removing then from your Google account in there play store. Again an easy fix to a virtually nonexistent problem.

          • Locked bootloader and Verizon controlled updates.. Verizon has more of their hands on it than a few uninstallable apps..

  • I want to know if the Best Buy version will be like the Google store bought version or the Verizon bought version.

  • Why are you doing Google’s marketing correction for them? If they can’t figure that blunder out for themselves then why should they deserve my friends and family’s business? I’m not getting paid by Google, in fact they get all my personal data for free. Now that’s a rip-off considering how much they expect me to pay for the Pixel. It’ll be $500 by Thanksgiving because it just isn’t worth what they are asking.

  • Guaranteed failure! There is absolutely no way that Google’s Pixel phones can compete with Samsung when Verizon has exclusivity. I will never understand why Google chooses to follow Motorola’s failing methods for distributing their flagship handsets. It’s so 2006! Apple with all its loyal fans even gave up on that back in the day. I’m the biggest Google fan I know but I have to admit that they are horrendous when it comes to handset distribution. Remember the Nexus One release? This is almost just as bad. They’re crippling sales by expecting people to purchase there phones outright in order to get an unlocked one or by financing through Google. A lot of people aren’t going to go through the process of going online to purchase from them when their used to walking into their perspective cellular providers and buying a phone. Let me stop ranting! 🙂

    • Years ago, and a totally different ballgame bro. Google is serious as can be with these devices. Watch how this pans out in the coming months and you will be surprised. Hands on reviews are saying the touch latency is as fast if not faster than an iPhone due to end to end hardware and software optimization. These phones are going to kick ass and you should be happy about that!

      • I love your optimism man. I really do but what hasn’t changed is business incentives cooked into carrier purchases, family plans, carrier loyalty and more. But after that… Bills, kids bills, car notes, college tuition amongst others. The phone is going to be sick! The selling model says these things don’t matter and if you’re not in Verizon you should just drop a car payment or two to purchase one for your carrier. Goofy man. It’s not going to produce iPhone or Samsung like sales. I guarantee that.

  • And this is the price you pay, when you make a deal with the devil. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Verizon wanted those “Only on Verizon” signs plaster all over any advertisement; Google caved.

In today’s US mobile phone market this is suicide. You can’t expect your phone to be treated as a flagship when you’re “only” available in one carrier. People expect their flagship phones to be available in all carrier stores. Can you imagine the outrage if Samsung or Apple had partner with just one carrier for their new flagships? This isn’t 2007 anymore and carrier’s exclusives aren’t the hot sellers they use to be.

I am well aware that the Google store versions of the Pixel and Pixel XL are unlock and work with all carriers, however if you guys at Droid Life need to publish an article to inform us of this there is no way in hell your “average” consumer is ever going to know this.

  • The ads are Verizon ads, they aren’t from Google. Justike most of the iPhone ads you see they are the carriers paying for them and airing them. The Verizon exclusive is stupid to be sure but let’s hope it is a gen one exclusive as a worst case scenario.

    • Having the US’s biggest and best carrier featuring their phone front and center on their website, and paying for and airing commercials nonstop and print ads across magazines and newspapers everywhere, and pushing and marketing the ish out of it in their thousands of retail locations hardly sounds “stupid” to me.

  • Well, that’s fine, but since the Verizon variant will come with 8 preloaded bloatware Verizon apps I’d say the only way to go is the Google Store, ya know, just like Nexus phones.

So Google’s back to square one. What a failure

    • Although, to be honest, most things aren’t “Made By X Company”, they’re made by manufacturing companies.

    • The iPhone isn’t made by Apple either…HTC is just the manufacturer, just like Foxconn is the main iPhone manufacturer only difference is HTC has makes their own phone line also.

      • Exactly, and HTC has long served as manufacturer for other people’s devices. This is not the 1st time.

    • That’s really the only difference other than the bootloader can’t be unlocked on the Verizon version. Also, it’s said that only Message+, My Verizon, and Go90 are installed on there and they can be uninstalled through the Play Store.

      • On another note, how does the updating process work? Is there something in the the unlocked phone that’s not in the Verizon version that allows Google to push the updates to the phone (even if there’s a Verizon SIM card in the phone)?

  • Thought that was a bit off when I saw the Pixel commercial, but figured Verizon told them to do that. at least for now.

  • Local news station actually had a story about Pixel and the Google event on the air the other day and kept saying “Verizon exclusive” .. I wrote in to correct them…they never fixed it….

  • so Google wants to pivot from the Nexus “niche” techie customers and appeal to the unwashed masses with the Pixel YET they do a brick & mortar exclusive with one carrier Verizon? dumb move then IMO. the dumb move of an exclusive doesn’t match the strategy. most of the people i know head to their local mall and go straight to their carrier store to make their choice and buy their phone. or they go to the Apple store if iPhone. so 6-12 months from now i bet the majority of the unwashed masses will not have ever heard or seen a Pixel phone. ask your non-techie friends about Pixel. they will say – WHAT???????

these Indians running Google are tech smart but business dumb sometimes.

    • Well Verizon owns over 35% of the market. Probably worked a deal with verizon to push the pixel more.

      • IMO dumb to pretty much dismiss 65% of the market when you’re trying to hit critical mass.

        • It would have been best to be on all carriers no doubt. There are reasons there are always exclusive for carriers though. Maybe Google is so in love with apple that it also copied its launch. lol The iphone when introduced was an at&t exclusive

  • I’ve actually been seeing these ads more than with the past Nexus phones. That’s nice. But that “Only on Verizon” tag is stupid. I know it’s probably part of the deal with Verizon but they should have made it “On Verizon and the Google Store”

  • If the ad campaign is aggressive enough then I can see Google selling a few million of these. People like us on blog sites like this know that there phone will work on every network. Google needs curly hair Sarah to have an option to go in a store to get the phone. Once that happens and Sarah sees how great the phone is she will tell all of her Twitter followers to get it as well. She will be able to point to the billboards when she is out with her friends to show how popular her phone is. At least this is what I hope Google and Verizon wants to happen.

  • Hey Kellen what you wrote is a little confusing for me, at least. I just got off the phone with a Best Buy rep and he said that the Pixel they are selling is same one you would but from Verizon. Is there anyway you can add some insight to this. Basically I am just trying to figure out if the version from best buy will have the locked bootloader like the Verizon version. I am hoping this is not the case seeing how I would activate on Verizon anyway and I would much rather have the 100.00 Best Buy gift card and chrome cast. Thanks!

    • Right now, we don’t know if there are different model numbers for the one Google is selling unlocked, at Best Buy, or at Verizon. What I can see from the Best Buy and Verizon listings, is that we have model numbers of G-2PW2100 (Pixel) and G-2PW4100 (Pixel XL) at both places. Those are the same model numbers that strolled through the FCC and are still the only ones we have seen to date. Actually, funny note, Verizon has the numbers flipped. Hopefully they aren’t screwing up everyone’s orders with the wrong phones.

So Best Buy’s website says it is selling the “Verizon” version, but I’m just not seeing any proof of their being another version outside of one unlocked model that Verizon just happens to be selling. I also understand that we are expecting a locked bootloader on Verizon’s. We just don’t know for sure yet. Sorry. If there is really only one model number, then Google could potentially lock these by individual IMEI. If Best Buy is indeed selling the Verizon range of IMEIs, then yeah, it’s probably locked.

      • Thank for your insight!!! I also spoke with a Verizon rep and he was very helpful stating that he believes the Best Buy model will also have the Locked bootloader. Not sure where he go his information but it took him a little while to get back to me in the chat so I’m sure he had to ask around for clarification. Bum deal for fuse! on another interesting note Best Buy has the full price listed on there site at 699 for the pixel and 799 for the XL. The have a financing option at 27.00 for 24 month making the total 648.00 for the Pixel and 31.00 for 34 on the XL making the total 744.00 and 0% APR for both. This makes no sense and the sales rep had nothing to say about it other than they price match in store! Anyway Thanks again Kellen!

        • Kellin, Question for you. I have a $67 data plan ($80 w/15% discount), and $15 for each phone (not $40 off contract) have 3, and then have the home phone connect for $20 for a total of $160 per month. We are needing an upgrade really bad, but with Verizon if we upgrade thru them we have to pay for the phone average cost of $30 for a payment plan, then the upgraded phone contract goes from $15 back to $40 for 2 years. So basically $55 extra per month for an upgrade on contract, or buy on a 2 year contract for $300+, and the $15 still goes to $40 for 2 years for a total of $900. Cheaper if we just buy the $800 phone from Google, Motorola, or even Apple. Is there any other way to upgrade??

      • I’m under the impression that “Best Buy Mobile” sales phones from carriers, not unlocked. Therefore, the stock is from the same Verizon pool. Kinda like buying from a Verizon store that’s not an “official” Verizon store.

  • If you (Google) have to explicitly tell people this then you’re already fighting a VERY uphill battle, general consumers (usually for convenience sake) tend to follow whatever their carrier has on the shelf or is strongly promoting (with added goodies).

So this probably means that only Verizon’s preorders for existing customers are doing well, for now.

That in-store exclusivity can really bite you when you’re trying to really compete with the big dogs. (less visibility = less sales)

    • It seemed to work for Apple for several years. DROIDS still sale well. (mostly b/c the agents push them hardest. I’m actually looking forward to walking into a Verizon store and see what they push me to buy.

  • As an added note, I asked a Verizon rep about phones purchased through Verizon and they are still unlocked. I knew they would be but just wanted verification. That way we can decide to go to a different carrier even after purchasing it through Verizon if we want to.

    • Don’t know if the updates will be managed by Verizon though, so be careful about that.

      • If verizon manages the updates for this phone that’s a major flaw in google plan…. I’m currently waiting to chat with a google rep to clear that up…

    • Interesting exchange on Verizon’s website:

Does Verizon GUARANTEE that all Android updates will be available the exact same time as the updates are made available to the unlocked versions sold directly by Google? 1 answer

Jskinvest, we appreciate you reaching out. We know how important updates are for your smartphone. Not all updates are beneficial to the Verizon experience. We are not able to guarantee every single update the Google offers, but we definitely do offer updates for all of our smartphones. – Marcus

  • Safe to say this week has been a debacle for google. No doubt Pixel sales will suck, doubt we ever see the numbers though.

    • It doesn’t seem like a debacle outside of Android enthusiast websites. I’ve seen lots of positive coverage online, as well as on the news and in print. I’m not saying these will be a sales juggernaut, just that there’s been a lot of good press.

        • I’m aware of that, as I’ve owned Nexus devices going back four years, but the Pixel is being advertised and given a mainstream consumer push in a way that the Nexus line never received.

          • No, but taking out multi-page ads, airing commercials, and plastering the Pixel on billboards helps with the mainstream push. I never saw an ad blitz like this for any previous Nexus device. It would appear that Google is laying the groundwork to get the average consumer to realize that Google also makes phones that compete with the iPhone and Galaxy/Note series.

          • It’s great that it doesn’t affect you. It does me. I will wait for Pixel 2 and hang with my Nexus 6 and wait for the dust to settle.

          • It has to do with AWS-3 spectrum that is involved with 700 mhz spectrum that T-Mobile bought. I suspect it has to do with coverage improvement but may also increase speeds with sharing of different bands to double and triple download and upload speeds. Looks to improve the middle states with coverage and can’t hurt.

  • some people are just stupid. they hear verizon exclusive and start assuming things that it will only work with verizon

  • Google is FINALLY being serious and I like it! I kinda want one of these but as long as Samsung is selling phones I don’t see myself buying anything else. Wish the Note 7 would hurry up and get back on the market, I’ve literally been checking for it every weekend.

  • There are some things I need to know about the differences between the two before I purchase one. Will Verizon version get updates directly from google? Will the version sold on the play store have wifi calling on Verizon? And will tethering on Verizon work with the Verizon model without trying to charge me?

    • answer to your first 2 question is YES.
I am not sure about tethering part.. but with shared data thethering is a non issue

          • Yeah, I’ve searched it. Nothing said that Google is managing updates on the Pixel that is sold by Verizon. Because the bootloader is locked on the VZW version, it leads me to believe that Verizon will be managing the updates, like every other phone on their network, outside of iPhone.

          • Interesting exchange on Verizon’s website: (meaning take with a grain of salt)

    • Regarding tethering, are you asking because you’re still on a UDP? If so then I would think it would work the way it always has, you’ll need to root and install the hotspot switch of your choice, as the phone will still not allow you to tether without being on a tiered plan. At least that’s how my Play store purchased phones have worked on Verizon.

    • Personally, I’m not sure why anybody who knows how to use the internet would buy the phone directly from Verizon.

      • Only reason I can see is if you’re on a shared data plan and the +2gb is important to you. I dunno.

  • Is the Verizon model the exact same as the one sold through the Google store? As in what bands it supports? I’m curious about this for traveling internationally. Thanks

  • Won’t Verizon’s model also have a locked boot loader? Also curious to see if it will be filled with bloatware.

    • Yes, the Verizon Pixel bootloader will be locked down. Google confirmed as much. Not sure if it will have any VZW bloat pre-installed, though.

      • That’s one thing that would push me to buy through the google store. No bloatware, no possibility of them removing or adding anything.

    • Yes, and I believe it will only have Message+, My Verizon, and Go90 (but these aren’t supposed to “count” as bloatware because you get install/uninstall them from the Play Store)…

  • I don’t understand why people are complaining about the Verizon “exclusive” part. Were you able to purchase a Nexus 6P or 5X through a carrier? No. So the Pixel phones are the same as the Nexus phones except now you can purchase on through Verizon as well. What’s the big deal?

    • Because a huge portion of people buy their phones through carriers they don’t want to pay full upfront cost for a phone and would rather finance through them.

      • You can finance them through Google. Exactly the same as financing through a carrier…

        • Yes but if you’re already established with your carrier you’re almost guaranteed approval for the phone. No need to apply elsewhere.

          • That’s a weak argument. I’m well established with Verizon, but wanted the unlocked version. Was very quickly approved on Google and bought the phone through their financing.

          • Not really arguing just saying what most “non” tech people are going to do. If my wife wanted the pixel or any phone for that matter she’s going straight to the carrier. And they would let her finance it through them. I’m gonna guess that most consumers don’t even know google sells devices on their website.

          • Which is why the “only on Verizon” marketing here doesn’t really matter that much. If most “non” tech people are going to go straight to their carrier anyway, then what difference does it make if “only on Verizon” isn’t there or if it said “only in Verizon stores or at the Google Store”? If AT&T folks are going straight to their carrier, then the Pixel will either be one of the available phones there or it won’t be. In this case, it won’t be for a period of time. Doesn’t matter what the commercial says. On the other hand, if somebody sees the commercial and says, “Wow, I really want that phone! I guess I’ll have to switch to Verizon to get it” then Verizon gets what they paid for.

          • Google’s ad push isn’t even in full swing. Their intent is to position this as an iPhone competitor, they’ll make it clear you can get it through them.

          • And I fully agree with buying through google. But most people choose the easiest way. Not people like me and you who read these websites. Maybe that will change with googles advertising, they’ll push people to the google store.

        • Verizon customers on certain plans get a discount on service for financing with Verizon. I currently have a plan they no longer offer that is already $20 cheaper plus I get $25 off per month for each line I have a financed phone on.

          • Same here. I gave up my unlimited plan a few years ago because Verizon gave me 21gb for $100 plus my 20% employees discount I get my data for $80. My phone lines are $40 each with a $25 credit which makes it $15 per smartphone. I have 2 phones and 2 tablets. One line has a monthly iPhone and my bill with takes is $185 a month. With the unlimited plan is was almost that amount with just 2 phones.

          • I have almost the same thing. $67 data plan, and $15 for each phone, have 3, and then have the home phone connect for $20 for a total of $165 per month. We are needing an upgrade really bad, but with Verizon if we upgrade thru them we have to pay for the phone average cost of $30, then the upgraded phone goes from $15 back to $40 for 2 years. So basically $55 extra per month for an upgrade on contract. Cheaper if we just buy the $800 phone from Google, Motorola, or even Apple. Is there any other way to upgrade??

          • Your line fee stays the same so long as you’re out of contract. When you finance a phone it just plops that onto the end of your bill. If you go with a 2 year contract (rarely makes sense on your plan) the line fee on that line will bump up to 40.

    • I’m not really complaining…it’s just odd to me that they’d limit themselves in the public eye in that way.

      • It reminds me when the iPhone came out. It was exclusive on AT&T for like the first three generations.

    • Before last years Nexus phones, the Nexus 6, 5 and I believe the 4, were available on other carriers as well. It would just be nice if that was the case with the Pixels.

  • THATS BS…because like most people i buy my phone through MY carriet which happens to be AT&T. Its NOT being sold by AT&T and is only being sold to verizon SO…it IS accurate to say its a verizon exclusive. Sure…you can buy it from Google and use it elsewhere…if you can afford it

    • There’s no difference… If you can afford it through VZW why can’t you afford it through the Google Store?

      • i have a corporate discount with my at&t account linked to my employer…is the only way i can afford any phone in general. Why would they make this a verizon exclusive if they planned on selling as many phones as possible?

        • Who knows? Since VZW is the biggest carrier in the US, maybe they wouldn’t allow it on their network unless it was exclusive. Maybe Google is playing the long game, and giving spendy Verizon users first dibs on Pixel before rolling it out to the rest of the carriers in the future after Big Red has had their belly rubbed with this exclusivity deal.

          • Im having a serious dilemma on what my next phone will be. I have a galaxy s6 that has a YUGE crack in it. Was thinking Note 7 (but like my phones fire free) LG v20 (battery is too small) and then the Pixel isnt on my carrier. I wish some of the Chinese Manufacturers were sold my At&T but as of right now…im going to have to wait and see what else comes out.

          • A lot of times the employer discount is only off the data portion of your plan. Not the entire bill or the equipment. So they’ll give you a percentage off of your bill but usually the percentage off is only taken off of how much your data package cost. At least that’s how it is on Verizon

          • Yes, I have this on mine as well. Some companies give phat discounts. Mine is exclusive to iPhones and Galaxies only.

I also get 25% off my AT&T shared data bill.

          • I have an s6 from them as well…though i dropped it and it has a YUGE crack in it which is why im in a desperate search for a replacement.

          • I’m waiting for these to be released and amazon to do a huge shelf clearing sale on 64GB Nexus 6P’s. grab one of those and run it into the ground over the next 2 years. will be my last and final google phone.

        • You know you corporate discount doesn’t apply to the cost of the phone right? Just the cost of your plan…You can still get the discount with your own phone

          • i just looked and it says they give a percentage on the purchase of an upgrade…..and since it would be on the NEXT at&T program that puts the bill of the new upgrade in with your bill then it is in fact on the phone

        • corporate discount is on your talk/text/data part and wont be applicable on your phone payment. so i dont see the issue here

      • so if im on AT&T i can get financing through the google store to work with my AT&T bill?

        • It doesn’t work with your AT&T bill. It would be a $25-35ish monthly bill separate from AT&T. Yeah, another payment, but it’s no more expensive than going through your carrier.

          • That’s nice you get a discount on the phones as well. Most people don’t have that option.

          • Just as most people cant afford things outside of their carriers. Google finance sounds great…but the update plans on verizon, at&t, tmoble and sprint are all easier then that is my point

          • Well most carriers are making you pay full price for the phones now anyway.

I’m sure they had to make deals with Verizon to keep branding and as much bloat off the phone as possible. Also to get them to push the phone and other things to ensure the phone is a success. If they can build up the Pixel brand they will be able to have more say in where they sold.

At least if you really want the phone there are still options.

          • and i get that…but im going back to my original question…questioning why its a verizon exclusive

          • Trying to get a new brand out there is tough, even for Google. Giving them the exclusive probably means Verizon will push it harder, put less bloatware on it, and perhaps even advertise it for them.

          • Guess ill either wait for the next samsung (that will hopefully bring back the removable battery) or try the LG v20…or something else.

          • employer discount dont apply to phone payments. its only on your talk/text/data bill

          • WRONG!!! Mine helps with the purchase of new phones. Dont know which one you have…its different then mine

      • Just a reminder to all going for the Google financing that it may incur a hard pull on your credit report. For some people, that might not be worth it.

  • Is the Verizon model specific to Verizon (In that it also isn’t unlocked like the Play Store model)?

  • The people they are targeting are carrier first people… I’m sure once the phone is actually available, the Ad campaign is going to shift to the Google Store. Let’s not pretend Verizon doesn’t have power here though… I’m sure they negotiated this into the contract.

    • Which is fine. It’ll just be another reason these phones fail to sell. ~scorned Nexus 5X owner~

    • This was my thought when I read it was a Verizon exclusive, NO BLOAT. I bet you google said, hey VZW we want you to carry our new flagship. VZW followed with sure, what can we pre-install in it? Google said, NADA. Verizon finished with, well then we want exclusive rights to it. Google caved.

    • The issue here is that Google is losing out on a huge opportunity by running these ads and partnering with Verizon. Why? Because most people buy their devices from carriers directly. They’ve no interest in figuring out where to go to buy a device online, and it looks like Best Buy may be selling it only for Verizon (or, at least, the extra incentives to buy it through BB are tied only to the Verizon model).

Here’s the scenario: It’s time to buy a new phone. Joe walks into his carrier store (let’s say AT&T). Joe sees that the Note 7, iPhone 7, etc. are available for demoing in the store. Joe has heard about the Pixel phone though, and is interested in checking it out. He’s As a longtime Android user, he’s really excited to see what Google has done with their “first” phone, so he inquires about it. The sales rep tells him, “I’m sorry, but that device is not available through us. It is only being carried in Verizon stores.” Joe, a customer of AT&T for 10+ years, has no desire to switch carriers just for a particular phone. Joe ends up walking out of the AT&T store with a Note 7/iPhone 6s (because he didn’t want to lose the headphone jack).

      • I’d agree, but some people really care about WiFi calling. I’ve never had it, but maybe someone can show me the difference when I say, “use Hangouts/dialer for that.”

    • The “pros” are really only “pros” for Verizon (buy though us and you’re stuck with us, at least until you’ve paid it all).
In some cases, though, once the phone is released, you could get it “quicker” (from the store) than waiting on it to ship from Google.
One other possibility would be those little promotions that VZW does from time to time to entice you to buy whatever phone they’re pushing at the time whether it’s Samsung, Apple or LG.

  • I got $300 in trade in for my beat up note 5 because it’s towards a pixel. And was able to use an upgrade with a 2 year contract to get a subsidized price because I’m on a business account. Landed a few dollars short of getting pixel and daydream vr for free

    • My wife’s doing this too… if I decide to get one, really takes the burn off knowing I paid next to zero for her’s.

    • I probably would have done that too, but I read Verizon’s version of the Pixel is going to be behind on software updates.

      • Google said it the updates were coming straight from them. The only VZW influence is a locked bootloader, and as of right now, the rootability is in question for Pixel phones.

        • I read differently, I think Android Central or Business Insider said the VZW ones would be delayed. Hope you’re right though.

    • This should be the practice on every major carrier in the US. Pixel in Verizon stores only = Less than stellar sales.

    • The wording is horrible. Many people still think it’s a Verizon exclusive even after so many articles stating it doesn’t. I hope VZN paid good money for the promos…

      • One thing to watch out for though is that some plans (including mine), are currently giving a $25 discount for financing a device through Verizon which stops once your existing device is paid off. Finance through google and you lose that discount and then are paying Google on top of it.

        • And that is a good thing for sure… for those of us that change phones often though and pay out right for them doesn’t really matter.

        • Unless you’re on a more everything plan 6gb or higher and have the grandfathered 25$ month to month discount. Then you’d want to go through Google so you don’t lose that. Because if you do it through Verizon you keep that 25$ discount but it’s considered a device payment discount and it dissappears once the phone is paid off

      • And you’re paying the exact same amount for the phone in the end so I don’t see what the difference is, nor your point?

        • Good thing some of us don’t find them overpriced. I see Google’s iPhone and I’m all in.
