We’ve Reviewed Pixels!

On this episode of the Droid Life Show, we’re talking Google’s Pixels almost all show long. Why? Because our Pixel and Pixel XL review is in, you probably own them, and well, what else do Android nerds want to talk about at the moment? Oh, we’ll probably find some time to answer a few questions from the Q&A session that opened up earlier in the week.

Join us at 10:00AM Pacific (1:00PM Eastern) for the fun.

If you miss us live, feel free to subscribe to us by following one of the links below. We have a video embed as well and will be chatting it up over at the YouTube page for the show. You can find it here.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Spilled at two different times, full cups of iced tea on my N6, even got in the headphone jack and speakers, and works great today.

  • I think there will be some initial hesitation on the S8, from people waiting to see if those things start melting like the note 7. we’ll have to wait and see i guess. I certainly would be one who would wait and see if I were thinking about getting the S8.

  • Le/max Pro3 review. Awesome reviewer. Wish everyone was this thorough, quick, and to the point. MKBHD could take a few pointers, along with everyone else for that matter. Amazing what a screen recorder app and some sreens can do for a review.
In a nutshell. Great phone, but no auto focus in videos. No eis/ois. Low audio recording in vids. Decent low light. Worth $300 all day long, but doesn’t match the Op3 for $400. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfTIx-DWcmo

  • I have a Pixel XL. For most consumers the Pixel is a great Android phone. The OS is buttery smooth, has all the standard features including an “assistant”, a great camera, and will get fast updates and can be had on a carrier. It just works. No gimmicks. The hardware is solid, doesn’t feel cheap and while boring looking in comparison to the Note 7, is not boring compared to iPhone. It’s a glass and metal slab. Feels nice.

I returned both my Note 7s on the recall so I know about stunning hardware of the Note 7. And I love the Pixel. But…. if you’re the type that can’t get past the fact an $800 phone doesn’t have any water proofing then this isn’t the phone for you. If you want Android and also just want a solid experience that works and is secure don’t hesitate to get the Pixel. It’s a nice device. In person it’s really nice vs. how it looks in photos. It’s glass and metal people, it’s not cheap at all (except for the water proofing thing 😉

  • I believe phone consumers are treated like dirt by oems and carriers. I dont think this will change unless some subset of users grows a set.

  • So is there enough info out there to really make a solid comparison between Amazon’s Echo and Google Home?

    • Android central says that Google Assistant needs a lot of improvement and is no where near as refined as Google Now, so I doubt Assistant could compete with Alexa at this point

    • No, but I just returned by Pixel XL: couldn’t justify it’s price when there were tiny incremental changes. My 6P flies on the Dev Prev 7.1.1 and getting decent battery life!

      • Thanks for the reply. I’m running the Dev Prev also and like it a lot. I agree battery life is fine.
