Stumbling upon Droid Life randomly after purchasing a Motorola DROID in late 2009, then setting out to learn everything he could about Android, Tim quickly became an integral part of the site's comment section. After quite some time of strictly commenting on Droid Life, Tim was offered an opportunity to write feature stories for the site, such as custom ROM overviews, as well as interviews with Android community members. Following success of those, Tim became a full time writer and editor for Droid Life, now spending his time on news articles, device reviews, producing videos, and much more. Tim currently resides in Portland, OR with his longtime girlfriend and two wonderful dog children (Loki & Thor). In his spare time, Tim enjoys playing guitar, drinking coffee, practicing photography, and destroying kids on Call of Duty.

  • Nobody is buying a z and nobody is buying those mods…nobody wants to carry around extra stuff….make a bad ass unlocked moto x like device with a beast battary and call it a day….hows that so hard? i love my turbo2 but its far to wide, honestly cant wait to upgrade next year to something not moto for the first time in a very long time

    • Lenovo has stated that it is not. Rumors have been floating about the next one, but no real info yet.

  • Lenovo usually does it right when they buy a brand. Look at ThinkPad, still one of the most respected laptops for businesses.

    • ThinkPad, yes, is still VERY solid. I am typing this response on one right now, actually. But their consumer-oriented IdeaPads are pretty iffy and their Android tablets and phones have historically received zero support. Assuming there is anyone left in the Moto division to crank updates, going all-in on Moto branding AND support is a very good idea.

      • I agree not everything Lenovo does is solid. I have a ThinkCentre and a Yoga, I absolutely love both. Some of their other products though, not so great. They seem to have just thrown a bunch of stuff against the wall to see what stuck. But judging from what they’ve done with their IBM acquisitions, I have no reason to believe they’re going to tank Moto.

  • C’mon, Gina, bring it! Maybe you can breathe new life into our poor Moto…something you can be proud of!!!

  • Hope this is more “Lenovo becomes Moto” than “Moto becomes Lenovo”… I don’t really like the way they’re going with Moto Z phones, but I’m still interested in what they might deliver in the future…

    • Its not Lenovo becomes Moto. They already fired everyone that was Moto. They bought it for the name and can’t wait to discontinue support on the existing phones out there from prior to integration.

  • nice. now….get rid of the lenovo pricing and design language.

    • Z Play is epic too. Just got one for my wife and it flys despite the 625 SoC and even games well. She got 6 hours SoT yesterday… with 50% battery left.

      • Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !mj166d:

      • if you get the z play do you have to pick either verizon-only or everyone else with regard to carrier choices? Is there a version that will work on all carriers?

I love moto display to the point I don’t want to move on to anything else. While I’m not a huge fan of the Z series my 2014 moto x is barely getting me through the day.

        • Yeah, pretty much. Unfortunately there is no variant that works on all carriers like the Moto X Pure did. Although the Verizon variant is unlocked too and allegedly does support band 12 on T-Mo, I opted for the unlocked version for my wife so I wouldn’t have any issues with updating the phone when they’re available (I’m assuming the unlocked variant will get updated a bit faster than the Verizon/Droid model too). I was kind of annoyed by this too, since I have a 6P and like having the option to jump carriers at will, but being unlocked for 2/4 of the big carriers is probably fine.

If that’s not an absolute necessity, then I don’t think you can go wrong with the Z Play. The battery is absolutely insane and better than any other phone on the (US) market, including iPhones. It performs just as fast as my 6P in real world usage, the display seems just as sharp and gets bright, the camera is still above average (no complaints from the wife at least), build quality is solid. There’s really no reason you couldn’t be happy with it other than the carrier compatibility issue with Sprint/Verizon on the unlocked model.

    • you’re right it was a great phone I flashed more ROMS on that phone and then bricked my phone I don’t know how many times and still brought it back to from the dead.

    • I loved my Moto X DE for the unlocked boot loader. I also still love my Droid 2 Turbo with ShatterShield. I am not totally sold on “mods” and have not bought a “Z” yet, but I think they are still producing some of the best hardware out there. Customer service and support, yes that has fallen abysmally.

    • How?
$300 for a mod that makes your built in camera worse
      Low res projector
Maybe a cool speaker add on but expensive
Maybe a battery pack but clunky as hell

      • novelty factor. these nerds love to show off these novelties to their other nerd friends. it doesn’t matter that practicality and functionality in the real world is zero. gimmicks!

    • Not a chance. Haven’t seen one Moto mod out in the wild let alone a Moto phone itself. Nobody is going to pay for accessories that you have to carry around extra. Didn’t happen yesterday, won’t happen today and isn’t going to happen in the future.

    • Totally agree, now if only Lenovo would move back to what made Moto turn a corner with the x13 and move forward from there. IE unlocked for any carrier, decent size, reasonable specs, and the curved back again. No more of this flat slab hogwash they moved to

    • yes and i heard the Nokia c̶o̶r̶p̶s̶e̶ name is making a comeback in 2017 too. kind of like pissing in your pants in the snow. or two turkeys don’t make an eagle. or something like that.
