Google is spicing up conversations in Allo today through a new update. We’re talking about the perfect emoji or sticker, joining the Fantastic Beasts hype, and customizing your chats with themes.
Now, in Allo, as you type out sentences or have conversations with someone, Google will recognize the content and suggest the “perfect” emoji or sticker. For example, you could see burger or pizza emoji or relevant silly stickers of food if you are talking about dinner. The suggestions, which show through a Smart Smiley button, change based on the words you type and the “sentiment of your message.”
For themes, Google is giving you the option to add a background to your chats. As you’ll see below, that could mean anything from watermelon-esque styles to straight up black, to help with your eyes and battery.
With Fantastic Beasts hitting theaters this week, Google is now pushing out their related sticker pack in Allo. You can see a preview of it in the GIF below, but it should also be available for download.

I really only use Facebook Messenger for friends and Hangouts for SMS integration because I has a desktop client. I’m open to using Allo and I want to like it… but it’s really falling flat.
Allo is a good messenger that is being completely brought down by the lack of SMS support. Fix it Google!
SMS support and backups/saved history are a must for this to be successful…
Not one person on my contacts has Allo. I’m sure not many even know what Allo is. They ether have a built in SMS or iMessage and Facebook chat.
Build an iMessage type app already Google. You don’t listen to anything people want huh?

Sounds about the same as me except I don’t use Facebook Messenger that much.
I’ve been a long time Google Messenger user. But trying different stuff out lately. I tried Textra, AwSMS and Yaata SMS. All have good and bad. I can’t seem to find one that just has everything. AwSMS comes close but the dev doesn’t update it very often.
I really like Textra for SMS but looking for something like Hangouts. I like the idea of Whatsapp and E2E but not many people I know use it and the ease of Hangouts from my Gmail is great.
Yeah, as far as web messaging, I don’t know. Everyone I talk to uses SMS.
WhatsApp is God.

I can’t find anyone that uses it. I like the E2E but then I would have to try and convince everyone to switch over.
For SMS I use Textra. I also have a Hangouts group with my car buds. Then use Telegram to chat with my family… its a mess
That is exactly my issue, way too many. I would like one unified app like iMessage but with good E2E and if its a SMS it tells me so I know its nots E2E.
I’ve seen Signal being thrown around in comments when it came to E2E. I’ve never used it and I don’t care about E2E so I can’t tell you how it is. But maybe check that out.
But iMessage is platform specific.
I know which is crazy. That needs to be opened up to all platforms or someone needs to come up with a real viable alternative.
I use Whatsapp. My family and some friends use it. I don’t understand why the U.S is still stuck on SMS. Most people in Asia use messaging apps like Whatsapp or WeChat. Nobody there text anymore, it’s so archaic.

Another useful request would be for Allo to have a section to tell me what friends had Allo so I could use it with them rather than send a crazy 3p SMS. You know, exactly like DUO does.
If you choose “Start Incognito Chat” after pressing the compose button, it will show you a list of your contacts that have Allo.
Not very convenient or intuitive, but that’s a workaround for now.
That’s pretty neat. There are two of the problems right there.
1. this should be the first thing you see.
2. If we don’t get a web client or other device ability to use this then it’s not encrypted, so why do we need to start incognito?
Just encrypt from the get go and then maybe i can understand the lack of other devices.
Also It seems to be a current list of people with Allo installed. I know i used it with one co worker who removed it, (Not sure if he opted out) and he’s not in the list anymore.

For a company who has their finger on the pulse of the entire internet, Google sure is tone-deaf it seems.
Or, perhaps, they know more than we do 🙂

The absolute worst feature of allo are the suggestions. They’re almost always ridiculous and clutter the app. Can I just turn them off permanently?
Are you talking about the suggested replies? No offense but I actually think the suggestions are one Allo’s best features. I’m consistently amazed how good these are.
Who is running Google….a bunch of tweens? Damn the stickers & themes, how about SMS support, Hangouts integration, ability to archive/save conversations to Google Drive, integration with FB Messenger/Whatsapp, etc, etc, etc????? Someone put an adult in charge of the Allo team at Google ASAP!

Besides people that work at Google, I can’t imagine one other person on the planet using Allo. What a disaster that app is.
And yet if I send a message with Allo to someone who doesn’t have it, they never receive it. That’s the update we need.
