LG Asks What Your Ideal Smartphone Would Feature, Probably Purposefully Outs G6 in Doing So

LG will announce the G6 at MWC, I think it’s safe to say that that much has been confirmed. We know that the LG G6 will feature a 5.7-inch QHD LCD display with a weird, but could be cool 18:9 aspect ratio, and slim bezels. We also know that LG has ditched the module idea from last year’s G5 and will instead try to make the prettiest of pretty devices. But what else is coming in this year’s flagship from LG? I think the video embedded above tells us a lot.

LG just posted this video to their LG Mobile YouTube channel and it asks a bunch of people what their wish list is for the “ideal smartphone.” Everyone runs through options and ideas, all of which LG likely wouldn’t mention unless they plan to include these things in a new smartphone. For example, no one says, “I want modules!” They do, however, say that they want a really big ass screen in a small body that is waterproof, more reliable, and won’t slip out of a hand. Someone also gets really excited about being able to “Capture it all at once!”

In case you missed any of the ideas here, let me recap on what the LG G6 will have:

  • A big ass 5.7-inch QHD LCD display, that is great for multi-tasking.
  • A phone body that isn’t huge and can be used with one hand. While I’m skeptical of any 5.7-inch phone being one-hand-friendly, LG will do what they can to shrink the body while incorporating single-hand software modes. (They already do this, but hey, focus is a good thing!)
  • Some sort of interesting texture or finish that will make the phone easy to hold.
  • Water resistance! The LG V34 in Japan is IP67 rated, so it’s no shocker that the G6 will be ready for your toilet.
  • Cameras that can capture everything, which probably means dual cameras with one having a wide-angle lens like we have seen on the last couple of LG flagships.
  • Either a better protected body or a new screen replacement program, since they do mention wanting a phone being “more reliable” and not having to “keep paying for fixing a cracked screen.”

Got all of that? The G6 will be here by February 27.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Waterproof, lots of storage, excellent camera, no stupid modules, and don’t make it super thin. I’d rather have a chunky phone with a massive battery. Plus thin phones are hard to talk on up to your ear with your shoulder holding it.

  • Make it so it doesn’t break when you drop it. A big battery. Bring back the steel and rubber. AMOLED.

  • If it had specs like the Mate 9, but with water resistance, it’d be the perfect phone.

  • front facing speakers with a 3500+mah battery and i’m sold. just wish it wsa coming with an amoled screen…seems they are sticking with the LCD panel again, in 2017.

    • Which is somewhat odd, as LG is about the only game in town for (AM)OLED TVs. SMH. Seems like someone at LG could figure out that synergy exists.

      • I know….I bought one on black friday this past year and it was cheap. the picture looks good…but they are power hogs. I like the POP of an amoled. I wonder why they stay away from them?

        • I can only assume the manufacturing process hasn’t matured enough yet for them to scale the size down yet. But that’s all I got– and it’s a pretty big stretch in my mind. We’ll see.

          • It’s weird because it’s making _big_ OLED tech like for TVs that’s been difficult. Small OLED hasn’t been a problem for years now.

LG’s been doing LCD displays for so long, it’s probably just corporate inertia more that anything. Their TV group being separate from their Display group.

          • Yeah, you GOT TO believe their is someone high enough up at LG going “WTF are we doing here?”

    • I’m waiting to see what the Nokia 8 releases with. Take a look at the rumored specs. Looks like an absolute monster!

  • 1. Software: a) vanilla android, b) fast, c) timely updates
    2. Front facing speakers
    3. Great camera
    4. Amoled display.

  • LG G5 is the worst battery life phone I have had in a long time. It needs to be charged 3x per day. How is this not a higher priority?

  • 5.7 Amoled display, Front facing speakers, top of the line camera with laser focus and very good low light shooting, bootloader unlockable, Large batt, not Pixel level expensive, HAS to have a headphone jack. That is all….

  • 5.5″ QHD AMOLED display
    Front Facing stereo speakers
    Top of the line SOC
    4GB RAM minimum
    64GB minimum storage
    Stock Android – NO SKIN
    Large battery
    Quickcharge or equivalent wireless charging

Now, I made no mention about the camera on purpose. I’ve never made a decision about a phone purchase because of the camera. I could care less about the camera. It’s good to have in a pinch, but it isn’t a deal breaker if it isn’t the best on the market.

    • This, exactly, except I want to see it in 5″ and 6″ versions. 5.5″ is the worst of both worlds.
Also I appreciate a really good camera. Wouldn’t make a purchase just for this, but I would decide against a purchase it the camera is bad (one of the only reasons I didn’t get the One M8).

    • They’re probably trying very hard to ignore those people and pay attention to the “big screen, small body” people.

    • I know. I’m 100% all about the big screen people. Those people are smart. Big screens are great. BUT, not one single person mentioned putting a HUGE battery in it? Like, 5000 mAh or more? Not one!? Or at least saying “Great battery life.”

  • how about like moto and htc and put a “suite” of apps on top of stock android!? Maybe they’ll have less software issues. Kellen even mentioned that the VZW one had issues. People don’t need “stuff” as he says, they need a good solid fluid phone.

  • LG + Reliable = Does not compute

My dishwasher nearly burnt the house down and my G4 died thanks to a known manufacturing defect.

  • 5.7 inch 18:9 is the same width as a 5.2 inch 16:9. Sorry too small. Rather have the V20 5.7 inch. heck it’s small than my 5.5 inch G4. Not going DOWN in size LG.

      • No I’m not. That doesn’t matter if all the rest of the stuff has to be squeezed into a smaller space.

      • I didn’t believe him at first, but then I did the math.
A 5.7″ screen at 18:9 aspect ratio is 2.549117494 inches wide.
A 5.2″ screen at 16:9 aspect ratio is 2.549358446 inches wide.

However, the height difference is significant at 5.098234989 inches vs 4.532192793 inches

Although, this is all just screen size and does not include any borders/bezel

        • If you’re correct, I think that’s a really good thing. A typical phone with a 5.2″ screen is easy to handle due to the narrow width. LG might be on to something here. I just became interested. Thanks.

  • All I have to say about this is that if they miss their chance to do a massive ad campaign featuring “Fly Like a G6” I will be both shocked and massively dissapointed.

    • Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !mj39d:

      • I mean they just have to do it. Especially now that I’ve had that frikkin song stuck in my head since I posted this. They owe me for that.

        • I doubt anything will happen, but I reached out to them on FB & Twitter just to put it at them lol.

  • A phone that lasts a whole day (16 hours+) with heavy usage on one charge. None of this “our phone will last you 24 hours on one charge” but actually only 2 hours of screen on time crap.

But we all know that won’t happen.

  • I think by reliable they mean a quality experience like reliable hardware, reliable software, ect. So probably a more polished software experience like iOS is known for

  • Why is dropping the phone in the toilet such a common problem. It is mentioned almost any time people bring up water resistance (or proofing if you’re an idiot).

Maybe I’m a unique person (maybe I have an unrealized super power), but I have never once dropped anything in a toilet that wasn’t intended to go there in the first place.

      • @murphysmagnet:disqus – THIS. Had a cell phone since 2001, had a pager before that. NEVER dropped it in water. Last year, all of that changed, and I almost had to give up my beloved Note 4. Extremely lucky that I didn’t. Water resistance adds another layer of protection above that. God willing, I won’t “aqueate” my phone for another 15 years. That said…

    • Unfortunately the rest of the world is not as awesome as you. We shall create an award called “Master of Toilet Phoning” and award it to you for a perfect record in not dropping your phone in the john. This day will go in infamy.

    • I think people that put their phone in their back pocket are the ones that have issues like that. Generally speaking girls have tiny front pockets so naturally they have to put it in their back pocket or purse and it’s easy to fall out if your not being careful when dropping your pants to use the bathroom.

    • If you put it in your back pocket, it’s not too difficult for the phone to slide out as you’re dropping trou and settling in. It’s never actually happened to me, but I’ve had some close calls.

      • Was going to post this. I finally got my wife to stop putting her phone in her back pockets.

In my own personal experience, with the people I’ve come across in my life, the ratio of women to men that have dropped their phones in the toilet is realistically 10:1

    • “but I have never once dropped anything in a toilet that wasn’t intended to go there in the first place.”

guess that makes sense since the browns were never going to make it to the superbowl in the first place

    • I guess you don’t have kids. Just replace “toilet” with anything containing water and you’ll see the benefits of a waterproof phone instantly.

      • I think you need to reread what I said you obviously missed some of it or it holds true.

I have 3 kids and they don’t play with my phone. I also completely understand and appreciate a water resistant design. I just don’t understand the problem of toilet drops.

      • And now I have Nick Kroll as C-Czar from the Kroll Show talking about being a toilet baby stuck in my head.

    • I dropped my Motorola V60 in the toilet in 2002, but it was in my shirt pocket. I only do holsters or front pants pocket now. That was my first & last liquid damaged phone.

    • The last device of mine that took a swim in the toilet was a pager in the summer of 1995. I had it clipped to my belt and it slid off. After that, I switched the way I wear my belt so that the buckle end is on the right-hand side (where my clip would be). I no longer use a belt clip, but the habit has stuck.

  • Nobody leaks their own sht like LG… but I like it.

Nobody said “Fresh New Software Experience!”?

    • Yeah, on paper the specs look pretty good for most LG devices, but I have never been a fan of their UI. I suppose I would/could acclimate, but why would I want to? Can’t they just fix it? Had an LG tablet for a while- it was STUPID wonky compared to my Samsung (and that’s not just a UI dig, it had many more hardware issues as well).
