LG G6 Gets a Quad DAC Too, Improved Over the V20

LG is bringing its serious take on mobile audio to its G line of phones this year. Last night, the company announced that it will feature an “upgraded” Quad DAC in the LG G6, similar to what we saw in the V20.

The Quad DAC (digital to analog converter) is made by ESS, the company who created the DAC in both the V10 and V20. Customers are expected to experience “exceptional sound balance” that “provides a sense of depth.” The DAC will also help get rid of (or reduce) noise and allow for finer controls over left and right earphone audio. With this new DAC, LG also states that the “path for transmitting sound signals inside the chip has also been widened” and that high-volume 32-bit HiFi sources won’t see interruption.

I’m hoping that all means something to you audiophiles. Either way, LG is proving once again that it is the go-to phone choice for those serious about audio.

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I am a V10 user and this is the only model that i can use the dac with all my apps with an cool app which somebody offers, is LG stupid never did it to users, and i will not buy the new LG to give up my rights to use the dac with any app i want.

  • I’m just not interested in this phone. Especially if you can’t release it way before the S8.

      • Same here, got a G4 for the wife when her G3 started the bootloops. The G4, V10 and G5 absolutely plummeted in value within a few months of release.

      • They make quality phones, but the perception is that they’re the cheap brother of Samsung. So ppl skip em.

        • Well they weren’t wrong. G4/V20 had bootloops. I guess Samsung had exploding phones, which isn’t great, but that was just 1 set of phones.

  • The LG G6 sounds like it’ll be the best in the G series, by far. Too bad it won’t have SD 835 though.

    • agreed, but the 821 is no slouch. my pixel is running fast as hell. its buttery smooth. I hear ya, but i dont think its a big deal breaker.

      • irrelevant….when the vast majority of phone sales and thus profit comes form the general public and not the informed tech geeks like us on these forums, those sheep equate higher number = better. smaller or older = not as good.

        • I firmly believe most people dont know the difference between the 820, 821 or 835. I dunno, to each his own I guess.

          • I agree 110%. Thats the point. Most people dont. And thats why most people equate a bigger number must mean better product. Even though the 821 will probably be as fast as the 835 from a human eye test…because the 835 is newer and is a bigger number will make people think phones with the 835 must be better than the G6 with the 821 cause “bigger is better”.

      • Indeed, wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me, but it would be annoying if they price it the same as the GS8 or other SD835 devices though. Hopefully they at least put a slight discount on it, but like most other LG devices, I’m sure it will go on sale within a few months of launching too.

      • You may be right, but if I upgrade, I want a fantastic jump in processing power. My S7 edge has the SD 820 and jumping up to SD 821 doesn’t seem like it’s a justifiable reason to upgrade.

        • that is logic that I cant argue. I have the V20 and pixel XL….I see a difference in speed between the two, but they are both the fastest phones I’ve touched. To me, there isnt a reason to grab the 835. i’ll wait it out. Saying that puts me in the same position as you are in….so I def agree.

  • well here is something I hate about the V20. the speaker….its better than a lot of other phones, sure. But with them pushing audio quality, why not put in a great speaker on this? I can record in HD….but I cannot listen to it on the speaker to hear its great quality….I gotta get some great headphones, then turn on the DAC. While I appreciate what they did, its just not making much sense to me.

    • cause considering the size of the speakers in phones, it will never be good quality or loud enough….you may get one…but never both due to size and space restrictions. The whole point of the DAC is so when you use wired or bluetooth to a REAL speaker..it sounds good.

      • such a great point….its nice to want the whole package though, right? but i guess that would shrink room for improvement the next go around.

      • Quick correction: the DAC in the phone is only active when you plug in headphones or a speaker, not over bluetooth.

  • I bet they’ll try and price this similar to other flagships claiming “oh we got all this other stuff tho”

  • In a sea of phones that are all the same, sound quality seems to be the make or break on the decision to buy, for me. It is the sole reason I didn’t buy the Pixel. I hope LG comes through with a stellar device.

    • They really arent all the same….

some run faster or slower whether its due to specs or android skin….
some have bigger or smaller screens depending on if you want pocketability or screen realestate…
some have better cameras than others…
some have more storage or less…
some with bigger or smaller batteries….

      etc..etc…

to me sound quality is the least important…since almost all of them sound decent to great on the speakers MOST people use. Unless you are a super audiophile, most people use the 50-150 dollar bluetooth speaker they bought or got for xmas of which they arent near enough to take advantage of this DAC anyway.

      • I think you missed the point entirely. MOST notably in the way you broke down the differences between smartphones.

        • “In a sea of phones that are all the same…”
My breakdown was actually quite on point to ur statement…..

          • Hardly. They are all rectangles, where the majority of the components that make them are the exact same thing. There is very little that differs from one phone to the other, outside of the minor improvements made to those parts from year to year. If you are incapable of seeing that, then you really shouldn’t be responding here.
