Samsung is Showing Off Some Pretty Cool Concept Watches at Baselworld, Including a Pocket Watch

Samsung is at Baselworld right now, the luxury watch tradeshow taking place in Basel, Switzerland* each year, where the world’s top watchmakers (Rolex, Omega, and Patek Phillipe, on down to Oris, Seiko, and TAG Heuer) show off new pieces for the coming year. Why is Samsung at Baselworld? As a smartwatch maker, and a company who likes to dabble in the concept world from the time to time, they have some unique Gear S3 pieces to show off.

For one, they are showing off a “hybrid pocket concept watch” of the S3. I have no idea what that means, but you can see an image of it below. It appears to sport a mechanical watch movement on its backside, along with a smartwatch on its inside. That’s actually a pretty neat idea for pocket watch lovers. On one hand, you have the smarts of a smartwatch, but should that info not be needed or the battery die, you then have a mechanical watch to at least always give you the time.

Outside of the pocket watch, Samsung also put together a couple of Gear S3 designs that are powered by a Swiss mechanical movement. So these aren’t smartwatches at all, but are concepts that show what a mechanical movement would look like inside their Gear S3 case. They are a skeleton-style watch, which I’m not personally a fan of. Who cares, though – they are concepts.

Finally, in actual news you might care about, since none of these concepts will ever be sold, Samsung announced that they are releasing a “Value Pack” update to the Gear S2 and Gear S3 lines. These new packs will feature new content, like apps from Spotify and Nest, plus they’ll improve the alti/barometer, reminder capabilities, and S Health.

Anyone interested in a Swiss-powered Gear S3? Maybe that concept pocket watch?

*Hah, that said Sweden for some reason earlier this week. Whoops.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I already have a pocket watch. It does a lot more than tell time though. It plays music. I can play games on it. I can use it to read and send emails. Make calculations. Use it as a camera. Watch videos on it. Good calendar functions.

Oh, and I can make calls and send messages with it too.

I used job opportunity I found on-line and so I am delighted that I was able to earn such great money. It’s genuinely newbie-friendly and I am so blessed that I found out about it. • The Gear S3 Classic is one of the better looking smartwatches, but I’m not interested because it doesn’t run Android Wear.

    • Recent convert from Moto 360 and Huawei Watch to the Gear S3 Classic. The only downside to the S3 is that it doesn’t run Android Wear, BUT, the only reason I feel like it’s actually useful is because it’s not Android Wear. It lasts at least 2 full days with ambient mode on and WiFi on. My other watches maybe would work into the next day but never to the end of the second day. The apps on the S3 are lacking, but overall I use this watch more than the others. AW2 might be a game changer, though. I wish I had Google Assistant on it, but it’s probably the only watch that properly accepts phone calls and doesn’t screw up Bluetooth calling in my car.

  • Reminds me of that Kronos (?) watch that was being talked about awhile back. Mechanical watch with a smart watch face. The face was transparent until you received a notification or you touched the face. I like the idea of a mechanical watch with smart features overlayed. More of a luxurious watch before a smart watch. That’s what I would buy.

  • Does anybody know the reason why tizon watches can last two days and Android Wear can’t?

    • Probably because Android is running more apps/services in the background than Tizen is.

    • I rarely ever wear it two days in a row without charging it, but my Huawei Watch is never below 50% after a full day of wearing it with the screen always on. It’s usually around 60% when I take it off at night. Right now I’m at 86% with it being off the charger for over 4½ hours. Do the math and that would give me 16 hours before hitting 50%. With the watch only using a few % of the battery overnight as the screen and other processes turn off when the watch is sitting motionless on a desk, there’s no reason I shouldn’t be able to get a full 2 days of use with my watch.

    • My 2nd gen Moto 360 easily lasts 2 days. Do you actually have an android wear device?

      • I’m in the same boat as him. Had a Gen1 Moto 360 and a Huawei Watch. Huawei was way better, but the Gear S3 blows it out of the water. I’m just hoping Android Wear can get back on par with Tizen. Samsung is doing way better, but their apps are lacking.

    • Yes, because Samsung is actually using modern silicon. The Gear S3 uses 14nm FinFET SoC that’s still the bleeding edge of fab until the Snapdragon 835s hit (at which point it drops to 10nm). Almost every Android smartwatch is using chips based off of the old 400 series Snapdragons that’s 28nm from 2013. The original moto 360 is based of the even older TI OMAP 3 SoC. These things are comparatively hot, power hungry and large and there’s been very little advancement since they first came out.

  • I know if they did sell a Smart pocket watch( at a good price) I will be one of the first people in line to buy one

      • 15-20 years ago, a friend had a watch (Maybe Swiss Army brand) on a backing that attached to his belt. I loved the idea. Especially, when I was randomly punching brick and stone (Martial arts training). So part of me loves the idea of a pocket watch or something on my hip.

But then… if I”m going to reach into my pocket for a watch, then why not reach into it for my phone?

    • I always wanted a pocket watch. Don’t know why, I just thought they looked classy. My desire for them though has since faded.

    • You guys realize that our phones are basically already smart pocket watches, right? What you really want is a round phone with a chain?

      • the two. are completely different. both make different statements. and people would be more forgiving if you pulled out a elegant looking pocket watch to check the time/notification. than you taking out your phone

  • Still waiting on that S3 vs. LG Watch Sport comparison…Any day now fellas any day…

    • You know DL is not the only website that talks about this topic, right? There are comparisons on numerous other sites already for LG Sport vs S3…

    • You’ll be waiting. We haven’t really done reviews of Samsung’s watches. They don’t run Android, we haven’t seen many requests on them, and so we just basically share news is all.
