Since Samsung and LG are changing aspect ratio we need to start showing a stat for screen area.
A 2×1 AR screen has about 6.3% less screen area than a same diagonal sized traditional 16×9 AR screen.
Effectively it’s even more of a difference if viewing 16×9 content on a 2×1 display (black bars take up a bit).
The 5.8″ GS screen is 13.52 square inches. That’s about the same as a 5.6″ 16×9 screen.
The 6.2″ version has a bit over 20% more screen area than the 5.8″, but with the obvious trade-off of larger dimensions.
All in all while I haven’t used any of them yet, I think I like the 2×1 AR change. It will make reading text easier, and holding the phone one handed easier. For years I’ve been talking about the width being the most important figure for one handed use. Specifically saying under 70mm is key, or 68-69 ideally. Props to Samsung for hitting this perfectly at 68 (for comparison the original Moto x was 65). This is a full 1.5mm less wide than last year’s 5.1″ GS7, yet includes a screen with the area of a “5.6 incher”. Impressive.
Of course they’re quite a bit taller, sure, but at least these new “candy bar” phones will be easier to hold in one hand.
First I’ll buy an fire extinguisher an then order the phone. More interesting news updates on S8… http://mobilenewsflash.com/#search/galaxy%20s8

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Samsung is doing what I want in a smart phone… got ride of that F***ing home button, and kept the headphone jack on the bottom… SWEET!
Looks good. Too bad never see any of this in a Pixel format
No front facing dual speakers? Super /s
Samsung is such a coward /s
TouchWiz will still slow it down after a month and when the next Android version comes out it’ll be 4-6 months wait.
The next version is already out. 7.1.1 is the standard, but these come with only 7.0?
Mehh.
Anyone know if both the S8 and S8+ have the exact same curved screen as the Note 7 which was less of a curve than the S7 Edge?
Is it Quick Charge 3.0 or 4.0 capable? Can’t find this mentioned anywhere.
I’m wondering if that 3000mah battery will be a step down from my S7 Edge 3600mah battery. Hardware wise, obviously, but will the software and 835 make up for it?
The 10nm snap835 should more than make up for it.
Still disappointed in the battery size though.
If I read it, right, waterproof? Only thing I wish it had would be physical home button, removable battery and solid software support, but can’t have everything.
They mentioned that there was a home button embedded under the screen that had tactile feedback.
WHY is the s8 so BIG??? I thought the whole purpose of edge displays was to keep phones in the same size but increase the screen size? I guess for those of us who want a flagship phone in a manageable size, we are still only left with the iPhone option
You are obviously a troll or an idiot. Either way, the above comment doesn’t make any sense!
chill out, he’s asking a simple question. there are many of us that would’ve enjoyed a 5.5″ S8 around the same size as the regular non-edge S7. I have the S7 Edge and personally want a smaller phone.
There are even some of us who be very happy with a 5″ screen with the smallest surrounding phone possible.
I went from a 4.7″ screen to a 5.5″ screen and I would actually like to go back a little smaller.
I would be VERY ok with a 5″ version of the S8 with the same specs.
The S8 is actually narrower than the smaller non-edge S7. Thickness and weight are the same. The S8 is just a bit taller than the non-edge S7 (6mm, not much). Overall, about the same size.
the batteries look paltry.
Yeah, if these had 1Ah more I might consider then. They’ll prolly hit something like 6 hours screen time thanks to the Snap 835’s 10nm, but that doesn’t cut it any more. I’m not settling for under 12 hrs screen on time for my next. Current ZTE Blade V8 Pro is excellent with 8+ hours but I’ll be upgrading to the ZenFone 3 Zoom with 5Ah, should make it over 12 hrs.
Yes, I use my phone all the time ,so my Xiaomi Redmi Note 3’s 4000mah battery is also not sufficient for me.
And you can swap the back button to the left with software in the settings
Damn this year’s flagships are looking amazing.
Are there really stereo speakers?

Fast Charge.
Yeah. QC 2.0. Ugh…
No way – SD 835 is capable of 4.0 – someone please confirm!
Confirmed on the other Android site i their S7/S73 vs. S8/S8+ comparison article (don’t want to link to competition, hopefully that’s enough info for you to find it).
That doesn’t come with any improved charging speed, though – Samsung is sticking with its Quick Charge 2.0-based Adaptive Fast Charging technology again this year to ensure maximum compatibility with legacy accessories.
If true – that’s insane. All QC products are backward compatible.
Dealbreaker – as my current Note 4 features the same 2.0 technology
Any confirmation that this features quick charge 4.0?
even though the 835 supports QC 4.0, its up to the manufacturer to support it
Will the Chinese version work on US carriers? Specifically, Verizon?
Does it have iris scanning/facial recognition capabilities?
Boy did Samsung design this phone well. Depending on the reviews, how the software performs, and what Google does for the next Pixel, this may be my first Galaxy S phone.
So is this the first phone that’s finally faster than the one plus?
This is the first Samsung phone that I would actually own. Finally, no physical home button! But, still waiting for word on the Pixel 2.0. Google better bring it.
It looks very good and I know what you mean when compared to the Pixel. But I just got my wife the Pixel and it does not matter what the phone looks like once you turn it on and start using it. I’ve used Nexus phones from the beginning (currently rocking a N6P) but the Pixel is so much better with the software that I know it is going be my next phone.
What about the 1000fps video rumor and at what resolution?
Yay…headphone jack!!!!!

I’m ready for the S9
Damn, I loved that the S7 was still relatively compact. Guess that’s over.
This is a weird comment.
What, did you look at the screen size and not the actual dimensions of the phone? The S8 is about the same physical size as the S7. Only very slightly taller, and narrower even.
I’m still not regretting my G6 purchase. Coming from a G7E, and a Nexus 6 before that, I cannot tell you how excited I am to go back to a flat front.
I’m considering getting the g6 I have the S7 edge now. What do you like about it? And what did you have before?
My G6 on Sprint is actually being delivered today so I cannot speak on that yet. I’ve had the S7 Edge since day 1, and while it’s a great phone, I just want a change. Couldn’t resist the free Google Home and 49′ HDTV promo.
Don’t. That’s all I’ll say. Or try it out.
I’d buy this or likely the note 8 if it came with a flat front and back. but without…no. #edgesucks
Software looks so much better. Swipe up for the app drawer is a huge win….
I’m already more impressed than I thought I’d be with the hands on videos…… Waiting for Droid Life. But I’m very impressed so far.
swipe up for app drawer has been on Nova for as long as I can remember
Yea but I’m not talking about Nova.
nova launcher had this for years
Action Launcher, too.

This has what to do with the price of tea in China?
whats he talking about if hes not talking about swipe up feature?
@murphysmagnet:disqus? just install the launcher if you want it, no?
3000 mAh? You gave HTC crap, better bring the heat to them…
Quick Charge 4.0. 5 Hours in 5 minutes. Batteries can be smaller.
Has QC 4.0 been confirmed? I know the 835 supports it, but a leak a while back showed Samsung shipping the phone with their typical fast charger that has shipped with its flagships since the S6 (QC 2.0 speeds)
That makes no sense if the S7 has qc 3.0
nope, only had QC 2.0
It does not and neither did the Note 7. The S7 and Note 7 shipped with the same fast charger that supports QC 2.0 speeds.
I stand corrected. 🙂
No it doesn’t – the S7 has 2.0 QC
The HTC U Ultra is also larger physically than both phones, though only slightly more than the S8+
lol because that battery is just fine for the size of the phone.
less efficient processor as well?
that too. U Ultra is just a straight up failure.
Yeah but there have been smaller phones that have much larger batteries. Droid turbo anyone?
I’m currently using the Droid Turbo 2…Worst Android phone I’ve ever owned.
If you’re referring to the HTC U ultra didn’t that have 2 displays with 3000 mAh?
Dude, the 6.2″ version is basically smaller than my 6P…
Which is insane. Because I can’t stand the size of my 6p but Samsung did an incredible job with that.
