On May 9, Best Buy is planning to sell unlocked versions of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Like last year’s US unlocked Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge models, these phones will be sold without any sort of contract and will also work on all of the major US carriers. They are arriving with a solid $25 discount too.
Best Buy will sell the unlocked Galaxy S8 in Midnight Black for $724.99 and the Galaxy S8+ in Midnight Black for $824.99. See, a $25 discount over most carriers.
There are a number of us around here that would rather buy an unlocked version of a phone if given the choice. They typically lack unnecessary bloatware and carrier branding, leaving them feeling like a phone we actually own, rather than one we are renting from Verizon or AT&T or Sprint.
Now, we can’t post up unlocked news without pointing out the fact that Samsung has been slow (to put it nicely) to update the unlocked Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge from last year. That could change this year with the S8, but we don’t have official word on that happening. Keep that in mind as you consider waiting for these unlocked phones to arrive.

While I do really like the unlocked versions, it’s equally as easy to just go to XDA and grab the files and flash the unlocked software to a carrier phone. Verizon’s logo on the back doesn’t bother me THAT much.
That was putting it on very thick… samsung has pretty much abandoned the unlocked S7 phones and haphazardly sent security updates. There is NO value in buying the unlocked from Samsung and this is what you should be reporting… bad form.

No it was Gold also. My S7E is Verizon but I flashed the Unlocked software on it. Might be the same this time too.
Yeah I’ll stick with VZW version. Had the S7 edge unlocked version but as mentioned barely any updates. But one could flash the VZW firmware on them which was fun.
Sadly, I’ll go with the Verizon version. If I dump them, it will still work on every other carrier except Sprint.

Sammoble reported 2 weeks ago that Samsung vowed to get on top of updates with the unlocked models, at least for the security monthly updates. They said it will be a monthly update instead of quarterly.

Also, seems like the article is talking about a carrier unlock, not a bootloader unlock. 🙁 So this “unlock” doesn’t matter for devs.

I’m also conflicted because of T-Mobile’s new gigabit LTE… what are the chances the unlocked version will give me those same speeds? I imagine quite low.
Don’t fall for their hype. That’s what they want you to believe. They demo that in their labs. Real world speeds won’t be anywhere close to it. There are already a lot of areas with congestion, it doesn’t help that they’re giving away free lines and now they are forced to offer HD video by default.
Unlocked phones avoid carrier crapware, but you still get a ton of Samsung crapware. I’ve owned a couple of Samsung Galaxy phones in the past, but no more. These phones look pretty, but the software experience with the crapware and slow security updates is unacceptable.
If Google could release this design and the same software.
