Samsung Galaxy S8 Pre-Orders Were the Company’s “Best Ever”

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ produced “best ever” pre-orders for Samsung, according to a statement issued to press this morning.

They didn’t release specific numbers, but you have to assume we’re talking about a lot of phones.  Samsung said that pre-orders were 30% higher than the Galaxy S7 from the year prior. Samsung’s pre-orders sure seem to be going up with each new phone, including the Note 7 and its record-setting numbers.

Cool. Hopefully, they can keep them in stock, eh, Google?

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Wonder if/when the Note 8 comes if it’ll up the ante enough for Sammy to see these types of pre-order sales again? Or maybe even surpass the S8 in sales? The Note 8 will have more than a few features that we were hoping for on the S8/S8+ but didn’t quite get. Not to mention that fabulous S-Pen!

    • Up the ante? What ante? Samsung has made a name for themselves being an iPhone clone company, and that hasn’t stopped. Hell, they half-bake features and then can’t even get their half-baked idea right. Just look at their facial recognition. It unlocks from a photo held up. That’s not just stupid, it’s moronic and flabbergastingly insecure. The S-Pen, just a gimmick. You can’t handwrite on a phone faster than swipe typing, never mind a hardware keyboard, which someone can touch type on.

      • Just what I said up the ante, from one devices features to the next. The Note line has always been their premiere phone brand and if we look back on previous years they have always made it better than the S line of phones. I can tell you aren’t a fan of the Note series and that’s cool you have your own opinion. As for you saying the S Pen is a gimmick I’d disagree with you and I’m sure most people would. Gimmicks don’t keep being brought back year after year and it is typically a feature that not many people use. Not the case with the S Pen though. What other phone has even close to the technology that the Samsung phones possess? Iris? Facial recognition? New tech always has its kinks but Samsung pushes the bar further than any other phone manufacturer does. Kinks eventually get worked out too in time. I’m sure they will improve on the facial recognition so that you can’t use a picture to unlock it and most likely it’ll be fixed by the time the Note 8 releases. Hey that would be an example of “upping the ante”, in case you were still confused about what that is.

        • That literally just apologized for the flawed junk that the Note 7 was before they burst into flames. The Note phone S-Pen is a gimmick. Give me one use case that it actually has that I should care about.

          • Frankly I don’t know what you personally care about nor do I need to convince you. Point is, gimmicks are a trick to attract sales and are generally short lived. The S Pen is there to stay as long as there is a Note line being produced. Bottom line. You can hardly call something a gimmick when the majority of people use it more often than not. Look it up.

          • The dictionary definition of gimmick is pretty clear that it doesn’t matter if it’s short lived or not. The lousy S-Pen is a gimmick, and now you can’t give me one lousy use case for it. That’s a pretty clear…

          • kind of funny you actually looked it up. Never said the definition had anything to do with it’s longevity but it’s just common sense. The S Pen has many uses none of which I’m sure you care about seeming that you are insistant on calling it a gimmick either way which is fine with me. Like I said before I don’t need to convince you nor do I care to. Can’t teach logic to someone who apparently has none cause if you did you’d know why I said they are generally short lived.

          • You mean seeing, not seeming. Probably a mistake you made with an S-Pen.

Logic? What does the S-Pen do that your finger or a hardware keyboard doesn’t? Name me one thing, and you win the argument.

  • After working for larger firms that were willing to pay for my cell phone I retired my personal phone and took the company issues iPhones. Just moved to a smaller firm that doesn’t offer company phones, although they do pay $50 a month towards your bill. Came back home to Android and this phone, its been a long 5 years but I am pleased with the S8+ and all the things I loved about Android. Feels good to be home.

  • This is how people are responding to the end of normal-sized phones and rediculous aspect ratios on phone screens? Ugh. Hope Google and Apple don’t follow suit. 16:9 and 16:10 are the most perfect phone aspect ratios.

    • I have to say that, after using this phone for a week, I really have no desire to go back to 16:9. I love this form factor. Feels pretty great in the hand

  • course they were higher, a lot of the Note people were getting Galaxy phones to tide them over until the next Note.

  • Definitely enjoying my purpose. Waiting on DL to post about remapping the Bixby button. I wanted to do this at first but honestly I don’t see the big deal and why map it to Google Assistant when you can simply say “Ok Google” or just long press the home button, it’s pretty redundant to use that button

  • I returned mine to verizon on sat (had it since thurday). Something about it wasn’t doing it for me. Coming from the Pixel XL the camera was on par if not better but it felt the same and wasn’t worth the price (paid for it straight out). I was also have issues with MMS/Group messages, they would come in separate text and not load images. Spoke with Verizon who could not help with the issues. Happy both phones use Nano chips so I just stuck the new sim card back into the Pixel. I was running the Google now Laucher btw. The Touchwiz wasn’t my style.

  • I’m enjoying my S8 a lot. I loaded Google Now launcher and disabled Bixby, and I’m really digging the rest of the phone. I’m only debating whether I should have gotten the 8+ but I am coming from an N6 so it will probably take a little while to get used to the smaller size. But I wanted a smaller phone this time around so I think I have up to 30 days to return it.

It’s a gorgeous piece of hardware, that’s for sure.

    • Did you take the update yet? Did that kill the app drawer for Google Now Launcher? I had to switch to Nova to get a working app drawer without using the TouchWiz launcher.

      • I got the Day 1 update and it killed the remapping of the Bixby button. Other than that everything else is working like it should, including the App Drawer.

    • I came from an N6 as well and have the S8+. It is just as tall as the N6 but a lot easier to hold. I think the S8 fit my hand better but the S8+ is still very comfortable to hold (no complaints on my end). I just love big screen phones and didn’t want to downgrade my screen size.

      • I wanted more screen real estate because my eyes ain’t all that good but didn’t really like the tallness/thinness of the S8+. Granted I haven’t held one yet and may hit Best Buy to see what it feels like. But yeah, the S8 is easier to hold after Shamu, that’s for sure lol.

    • I made the switch from the N6 as well and I’m more than satisfied with this phone. The only thing I’m missing is root for blocking ads, root explorer, and removing the stock apps with TiBu.

    • I’d recommend using Nova. You can disable the dock and status bar to take full advantage of the screen size and aspect ratio IMO. Also Samsung’s browser actually natively supports ad block and lets you sign into sites with biometrics

    • Did Samsung approve your Gear VR claim with your receipt? I preordered it through BB and they denied me.

      • You have to submit something that shows your pre-order date. Did you get a pre-order confirmation email or if you log into your BB account, do you see the pre-order info?

Also, I would just photoshop the receipt to show the pre-order date. It’s is perfectly legit to do that since you are entitled to the promo. The problem is that Samsung is using automated OCR to process these.

      • I uploaded a PDF of my BB order details from logging into my account. No issues whatsoever, it shows the order date (which is preorder) and the date I picked it up. My submission was approved.
