Via an update that will come this summer, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will soon support Google’s Daydream VR.
Once the device receives support, all you’ll need is a Daydream View headset, available on the Google Store for $79.
Additionally, Google states that LG’s next flagship device will also support Daydream, available in the second half of the year. Our guess is that will be the V30, but keep in mind that nothing is yet known about LG’s future plans. With these devices added to the list of supported phones, there will be 11 different devices to choose from for your Daydream needs.
Daydream launched 6 months ago and there are already many Daydream-ready phones which you can use to access over 150 VR apps. This summer, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be Daydream-ready via software update and, LG’s next flagship phone (launching in the second half of the year) will be Daydream-ready, making 11 total devices by the end of the year.
Get pumped, S8 owners.
Just in time for Note 8.
Google speak for noone will make the hardware our daydream compatible, so we are changing our requirements so we can actually get more than 4 phones out there in a years time.
I wonder if this has to do with the recent lawsuit against Samsung from Zenimax about the Occulus technology that was used…
I’m not sure what connection you’re seeing.
The current VR technology used by Samsung uses Occulus. They have their own platform, with Occulus backing. This could be an attempt to distance themselves from Occulus to avoid a similar 500 million dollar lawsuit, by offering to support Daydream from Google which doesn’t use Zenimax owned code. Otherwise, I’m not sure I’d see a reason for them to offer Daydream support, when they already offer the same thing from a Samsung/Occulus solution.
I guess I can see a slim connection there with them hedging their bets. But knowing Samsung and their urge to disconnect from Google, they’ll probably come up with their own solution at some point instead down the road.
The Zenimax/Oculus thing is basically over. Oculus was basically found not guilty of what Zenimax was accusing them of. Oculus had to pay some fees, but don’t expect Samsung to be trying to Separate from Oculus any time soon.
I’ll probably dump my S8 for a Pixel 2 by then…. But I’m assuming the phone needs at least 7.1 and that’s when the S8 will get it?
Wouldn’t this be an update to/from daydream, not samsung (phones)? I read it as a daydream/google update that will allow s8s to work with it. if it needed an update from samsung, especially to 7.1, it wouldnt be ready this year.
