Verizon Galaxy S8, S8+ Being Updated With Daydream Support

As listed on Verizon’s website this morning, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are receiving updates, both getting support for Google’s Daydream VR platform and a few other changes.

To utilize the awesomeness that is Daydream, you’ll need a Daydream View headset, which is purchasable through the Google Store for $79. You can also find them on eBay, Best Buy, and Fry’s. Once you have your phone updated and a View headset, head over to Google Play to download the Daydream app, if the update doesn’t automatically include it.

In addition to the Daydream support, Verizon notes a new button for the navigation bar, which allows you to hide the bar at anytime. It’s a little dot button and pressing it will quickly hide the nav bar should you want it gone. A simple swipe will make it reappear. Enabling and disabling this button is done via the Navigation Bar Settings menu.

Be on the lookout for this update to start rolling out shortly if you haven’t seen it pop up already.

  • This also brought the July security patch – better late than never I guess πŸ™

  • funny thing is when I got my s8+ and did the transfer daydream transferred to my s8+ and the headset worked.

  • Just like the T-Mobile update awhile back someone hasn’t flipped the switch yet server side as neither my Work Verizon S8+ or personal T-Mobile S8+ yes I have two S8+s, show as compatible yet in the Play Store. Forget sideloading too as that doesn’t work I’ve tried it.

    • Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !pa100d:

  • Hey does anyone find the navigation bar more annoying now? I feel like it used to blend into the background but now it’s white all the time even after I turned the full screen button off.

  • Updated software and updated the Google vr services app but still can’t download the daydream app and get “incompatible phone” when I put into my headset. Bummer.

    • I think Samsung has to flip a switch server side. T-Mobile got an update a couple weeks ago with Daydream support, but it still wouldn’t work. I even sideloaded the Daydream app, and it says incompatible device when you place the S8+ in the Daydream.

  • Is VR really a thing, or are compnaies just trying to make it one? I have Google cardboard, and it’s neat, but it definitely didn’t make me want to invest 10 times (or MORE!) the amount to get something better. Thoughts?

    • I got in on the free Gear VR on the S8 launch. I previously had the Note 4 + Gear VR Innovator edition. While I can say that the software and hardware are leaps and bounds better than they were a few years ago, it’s still a very niche item and not quite ready for primetime.

I am just glad to have finally gotten the update on VZW allowing for hiding the nav bar. It works very well and makes book reading & web browsing in portrait mode that much better.

    • Only thing I’ve really found compelling in VR is porn.

      It’s pretty cool.

      • BWAHAHA… Seems like you’re on to something there. Maybe Strange Days, the movie? Unrelated: what a FANTASTIC username, sir.

    • I got the free one from Samsung, and I used it a few times… but yeah, not really a thing in my opinion. It was alright, but nothing I’m interested in doing really even once a month. I don’t think I’ve used it after a week of getting it back in… beginning of June maybe? End of May?

    • VR is definitely not something useful in a phone its decidedly a Gimmick. Now give me a VR headset for my PC and I’d probably never leave home, gaming in VR is amazing on a PC at least. What I would really love to see Google, and Samsung do is concentrate more on AR(Augmented Reality) as an Designer and Mechanical Engineer AR is the way forward.

  • Got it yesterday. As has been reported with the T-Mobile version of the update, it has removed most of the color choices (including black!) for the nav bar (for apps that don’t add their own color or follow your installed theme). But the hiding function is cool, so…..

    • Wow, that not the most recent update even. I got that update a couple weeks ago and got a new one 2 days ago lol.
