Oh Boy: Google’s Pixel 2 Strikes Pose for the Camera in New Pictures

After Friday’s leak that gave us a first look at the HTC-made Google Pixel 2, we’ve now got two new photos to add to the story. These photos of the Pixel 2 appear very much to be of the prototype variety, but you can certainly recognize the device.

Below, you’ll find both images that come courtesy of GSMArena. Their source suggest that the phone will feel better that the original Pixel in hand because it’s more “sleek and elegant.” They also said that the units they snapped photos of here did not have headphone jacks.

Other than those details, we’re left looking for additional clues in the pictures and we aren’t finding much. You’ve got cameras, flashes, and fingerprint readers all in the places we expect them to be. We’re seeing those dual front-facing stereo speakers up front again too. This looks like the phone from last week, yet not quite as modern as the LG-made Pixel XL 2.

Let us know if you spot anything else.

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I don’t mind the bezels of the of Pixels, don’t love then either. The new PXL2 seems to be the right ratio for me. You need a bezel if you intend to use it comfortably in one hand. I am glad they put dual front speakers in the phones though. Part of me wants to skip this cycle entirely and keep my OG for another year as I don’t feel the improvements will be significant enough.

Or keep the OG and grab an Essential to have as the new hotness.

  • From what I’ve read so far regarding leaks we have a solid idea that this will be the Pixel 2 but I haven’t seen anything leaked about the XL 2. Do we even know if LG is building it or if it’ll be HTC as well?

  • Bluetooth still buggy and no headphone jack is a bad mix. Also those bezels, waste of space anymore.

Got the previous pixel on discount, if I dont like it I will likely just hold out for an iphone 8 if those rumors are true (knowing I have to limp along with my N5x for a while).

        • How Bluetooth could be buggy on the Pixel 2 when the Pixel 2 has yet to be released is beyond me. But that’s why YOU’RE the psychic!

          • You know there is this thing called software on the phone right? Its called Android. And its very similar across devices. Turns out all of the last Nexii and the current Pixels run Android.

And this current version of Android, well actually since 6.0.1 has had an issue. They tied the bluetooth volume to the “absoloute volume” of the system in order to let bluetooth devices control system volume.

Problem is if the device has no volume control it sets the system volume to max and distorts media.

Its been in every release since 6.0.1 despite Google calling it “fixed.” They released a workaround that works in Beta but then they break the permissions in the release. Odds are its still going to be broken in O since they cant seem to figure that out (or more likely dont care enough).

    • If it has the new aspect ratio then the smaller Pixel will be taller than the current model.

  • Dual speaker looks hideous and so does the back.

I love the pixel, it’s my daily driver. But they didn’t improve anything.

  • This is a step backwards, I guess I’ll be holding on to my pixel for another year. I understand the ppl that still have the 6p will be buying this but this phone looks ugly, If the bezels were smaller I would have bought it, poor google. I’m positive that this phone isn’t water resistant

  • Someone needs to have an intervention with whoever are the decision makers over at Google.

    This thing is embarrassing.

    • You’re right. They should be addressed because of a supposed leak of a prototype of a phone we will see in a couple months. Schedule that intervention today!

  • It’s really not a looker, but I’ll most likely end up buying this unless the Essential phone has astounding reviews by the time the Pixels launch, or the XL is minimally larger despite the ginormous screen.

  • All I need to know is a definitive yes or no on the headphone jack. If there isn’t one it makes things simpler on what my next phone is. Namely it won’t be a Pixel phone and I can move on to looking at other phones.

      • Probably the same part of this appears to be of the prototype variety, that you don’t understand.

  • Someone did something with the real Google; they were so much better than this. It’s got to be embarrising to the man in charge of design to say the least. Kudo’s to them for returning the dual front facing speaks but the Nexus 6 originally shipped with shorter bezels, dual front facing speakers and a headphone jack. There is no technical excuse for this.

  • Looks great, can’t wait to have one in my hands! Unless Nokia can tempt me away. We’ll see… but Google is doing good things here.

  • Those are some Xperia sized bezels! At least they will house front facing speakers as well.

  • Waaaaaahhh bezels, Waaaaaahhh camera hump, waaahhh no headphone jack. Buncha babies. Looks like a straight up successor to the 6P which was great. I look forward to listening to glorious front facing speakers and being able to hold it/hand it to people without me and them accidentally pressing the screen or having it slip.

      • What? Follow the Apple playbook? So as we say and STFU? Thanks but I know more than my share of mindless apple drones. If Google does something stupid I won’t buy their phone. Simple as that.

    • Yeah I agree. I absolutely love my pixel XL. The ONLY negative thing I can find about this phone is the lack of dual speakers. It’s the only thing I missed about my 6P. I was crossing my fingers all year around that Google would bring the speakers back and they did! If I have to lose the 3.5mm port to get the speakers, that’s fine. I can still use my wired headphones with the USB C adapter and I have a decent set of BT headphones. So I’m not sweating that so much. Now if we can just make sure the camera is as good as the original pixel, then I’m 100% in!
Anyways, with all this complaining about bezels and headphone jacks, nobody is even talking about which version of Android it will be shipping with. I’m hoping we get 8.0 with it! Anyone heard any rumors about this?

  • Maybe next year they’ll place the bezels in the center and the screens on the edges. Play a reverse psychology game

      • The Nexus line might be dead, but this will always be Nexus Season for a lot of us.

      • No it isn’t. At the end of the day Pixel = Nexus. All it is, is a name rebranding. Which was stupid. Hey let’s drop a brand we’ve developed for years and has solid name recognition for Pixel. Whatever

  • No thanks. And I have a 5X. Gonna ride it until it dies at this point. These new phones are too expensive to jump at, based on the incremental improvements.

  • Did this person have an earthquake hit them when they took the full body shots? I mean, I don’t expect everyone to know what “composition” is nor be a pro, but holy bob dude. Pretend like we want to see this clearly.

  • It’s like I’m having flashbacks to the pre-release OG Pixel days with some of these comments. So many doom and gloom reactions about the bezels except now that Google has actually made use of them for a legit reason (front-facing speakers, how many phone’s can claim that these days?) ya’ll are STILL complaining. Meanwhile, I’m like…

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/73911c0f9d348bd4ff6512b008837644776fd1569b1811a52607040f204c43e2.gif

Because I know the minute this thing releases it’ll be highly praised, and immediately sold out. How am I so sure? BECAUSE IT HAPPENED WITH THE FIRST ONE.

    • Yep. Been happening since the Nexus days, in fact. First comes the hate, and then the haters buy it.

  • Can someone clarify if the Lg version will have stereo speakers or is it just the htc version?

    • The LG version won’t have 2 Front Facing speakers…that’s all we know so far.

        • unless its some odd set up like the htc 10 or if they’re small/not visible…hmmm if the htc version is a tad bigger than the htc 10 display then i will go for that one 😉

        • I mean we’re making assumptions off leaks. So far the leaks point to FFS only on the smaller device.

    • All I thought when I owned that phone was “Man, I wish this was smaller.” Well, Google done did answer my prayers and I couldn’t be more excited. The only way I’ll consider the Pixel 2 XL now is if it too has some sort of stereo speaker setup and is ergonomically friendly.

      • From the leaked images it seems like only one speaker on the top for XL 2 Maybe they’ll use a bottom speaker as well. I might be wrong tho

        • Yeah I thought the leaks show two speakers in the front. I seriously will be disappointed if they fail to bring those back to the XL 2.

    • The front looks incredibly similar to the 6p, which isn’t a compliment as far as bezels are concerned.

      • It seems like what happened is that originally HTC was developing both the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 together, and then LG was developing another phone independently. My guess is the original Pixel XL 2 by HTC looked like this too. Google wasn’t happy with the HTC version of the XL 2 and the LG designed phone became the XL 2 instead. I can’t say I blame them, the leaked LG XL 2 design is so superior to this design that even Stevie Wonder can see it.

        • This is what I’ve been saying forever. Google was going the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7s route but decided there probably wasn’t room for both in their portfolio

      • You mean the part of the phone that you look at roughly 99% of the time? Sorry, but after seeing the newest crop of small bezel phones, it’s tough to go back. Not to mention the fact that Google is going to try to charge a premium for a design that already looked outdated last year.

        http://i.imgur.com/mvpSYVc.gif

        • The bezels are ugly as sin, but so are my Pixel’s and that wasn’t a deal breaker. The headphone jack omission is unfortunate and inconvenient, but also not a deal breaker. If they charge $700 for this and the camera is not better than last year’s, DEAL BREAKER.

        • I have the G6 then I got the u11. Guess how many times I’ve used the G6 since. Until there’s a practical purposes for the dumb aspect ratio, it has no benefit. And if you’re watching a video the bezels will be just as big on the XL. And like I’ve said, one will still work well a year later and the other probably won’t.

          • I totally agree, I watch TV series a lot and for me I have to crop on my S8+ but on my U11 GoT looks better and sounds better with inlcuded headphones than those Samsung phone. S8+ is great phone but for multimedia U11 is better and it could have even better if only it had AMOLED display.

        • Even DL isn’t gonna be able to love on this phone with its shockingly dated design. Sad!

        • It’s not that bad to go back. It’s just in your head and it’s reviewers put in your head. I bought 2 S8+ love the display and front design now using U11 I don’t miss those bezel less thing. Though I wish U11 had AMOLED display. BTW front of U11 might look dated but back is really awesome and Samsung can beat design only at front else back of Samsung phone is bland and old

    • LOL! That’s Wildcats. That movie was filmed at my high school Lane Tech football stadium. I can see myself in the audience at one point. It was hot as hell in June/July and they told us to wear long pants, gloves, and a coat cause the scene was supposed to be set in the cold.

    • Actually it’s fine a lot of people wanted the Google pixel to be the Nexus 6p remake. And this is definitely it. I personally am getting the XL2 when it drops.

    • I wish Google would have started the pixel line back when they owned Motorola, and just produced the phones out of there.

      • So true. The Moto X2 with a leather back, perfection. For me that was an iconic design that they didn’t need to improve at all. Screen ratio sure, that would have evolved.

    • There just aren’t enough slim bezel OLEDs to go around. As it is Google had to pay billions towards LG’s new OLED factory just to secure some for the XL 2. Apple created huge demand when they switched from old LCD displays and producers need to adjust.

Even Apple will be doing without slim bezel OLEDs for 2 of 3 iPhones this year and other companies continue to release phones with regular bezels like the HTC U11. Until LG, Samsung and Sharp can finish building new facilities and increase production of these new OLEDs supplies will continue to be limited.

      • I doubt it.i had iPhone 7+ for six months I didn’t felt need for headphone jack. And now using U11 and I am really liked included headphones. It seems people will get use to this removal of 3.5

    • SAMSUNG’s most recent RECORD profit: $12.6B:
      ✔3.5 jack:
      Galaxy S8
      Galaxy S8+
      >Galaxy Note 8
      >Galaxy X (foldable)

      LG: losses
HTC U10/Pixel (no 3.5 jack): losses
Moto Z (no 3.5 jack): FLOP
      Essential (no 3.5 jack): DOA

the result of removing PERFECTLY FUNCTIONING AND CONVENIENT 3.5 jack is obvious.

      • I like how you conveniently forgot to mention the record sales of the iPhone 7 lmao and ignored the fact Lenovo declared the Moto Z one of their best sellers last year.

      • Lol that you think people aren’t buying HTC instead of Samsung because of a headphone jack

        • Yes. I was eyeballing an HTC, until a friend offered me a free S8+. I am more than willing to go with something other than free if it’s good. But lacking a jack was a deal killer.
