Why Aren’t You Just Waiting for the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2?

I don’t ask that question because I have anything against the soon-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy Note 8 or LG V30 or iPhone 8. I ask it because after experiencing last year’s Google Pixel and Pixel XL for months, taking a break to review other flagship releases here and there, and then returning to Pixel, I can’t imagine not at least holding out to see what Google truly has in store for the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 before making a purchase decision.

Of course, I’m fully aware of the flaws in last year’s Pixel phones. The lack of water resistance, the high-price tag, and the uninspired design weren’t for everyone and certainly gave me pause throughout the year. But look, all signs point to Google dealing with at least two of those issues (the price isn’t going to be lowered), while throwing in some added bonuses.

Seriously, don’t you think you should maybe wait until Google’s new Pixel 2 phones arrive before pulling the trigger on a new phone?

The True Google Pixel Hardware Vision

Google slipped up a bit last year when it told Wired that they skipped things like water resistance in the original Pixel and Pixel XL because they ran out of time. In a way, that was an admission that they were rushed after their fallout with Huawei, who was originally pegged for Pixel building, but also that the follow-up device may be the one to get really excited about. And from early leaks and rumors, I’d say Google isn’t going to let us down.

You’ve all seen the Pixel XL 2 render, right? That’s the one we believe is built by LG and will feature the same 6-inch POLED FullVision display as the LG V30. It looks gorgeous. Not only that, but it’ll have a premium metal and glass body, along with its own identity that it lacked last year. Let’s also not forget that LG is fully-versed in the water resistance department at this point, so I can’t imagine this phone won’t have some level of water resistance. Outside of that, Google will bring the goods, including whatever the latest Snapdragon processor is come October, enough RAM, enough storage, and what we can only assume will be one of the best camera a smartphone has seen.

Oh, but you might want the smaller HTC-made Pixel 2? It’s going to be equally as good even with the lack of a FullVision style display. You’ll get the same camera as the larger XL, as well as the same premium build, and same processor and RAM and storage, but HTC is reportedly also making sure they pack in front-facing stereo speakers for Google. Also, HTC recently got into the water resistance game too, so you know where that should lead.

Both phones are thought to have squeezable sides as well, a move that should produce something similar to the HTC U11’s Edge Sense, where you can squeeze the phone to open apps or the Google Assistant, take pictures, etc. This could be just one of the new areas that Google tries to set these new Pixels apart from the pack.

Let’s not forget about fresh colorways either.

Everything we have seen or read at this point paints a picture of Google’s new Pixel 2 phones fulfilling the vision they set out when they decided to ditch Nexus and create the premium Pixel line. Because they don’t seem to be rushed this year, we aren’t just getting some leftover mid-range phone shells from HTC, stuffed with high-end internals and a glass plate on the back. This time, we’re getting Google.

But disappearing headphone jacks

Yeah, I think you all know how I feel about Google reportedly ditching the headphone jack for the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2. If not, read this and then come back to us.

Software, software, software

You are probably going to get sick of me saying this so often, but after looking at the last 5 years worth of Android distribution numbers, it’s on my mind and something you should care about. You know the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will have the newest, cleanest, most secure version of Android at all times. That’s what happens when the company making the phone happens to make the software. You won’t get that experience with anything else except Apple’s iPhone.

Maybe you don’t care. Maybe you are fine being at least one full version of Android behind because companies like Samsung are at least giving you monthly security patches. That’s fair. That’s just not what I’d expect from a phone that could cost upwards of $1,000. If I’m spending that kind of cash – and I doubt the Pixel XL 2 is going to cost $1,000 – I better not be waiting until March to get software that came out in August. To give you an example, let’s look at the  Galaxy S8, which is still on Android 7.0 even though Android 7.1 went stable to Nexus phones in December 2016. That’s 100% unacceptable in any industry, let alone one that is constantly changes and evolving.

When the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 arrive (likely in October), they’ll run not only Android 8.0, but there is always the chance that they run Android 8.1 and include a special set of features not even available to Nexus phones. Google’s Sundar Pichai talked about this over a year ago, when he said that they were “investing more effort” into Nexus (at the time) by being more opinionated on design, but also on the software feature set that they could ship on top of stock Android. The original Pixel was only step one in that vision – Google has now had another year to invest further in those ideas.

Why aren’t you waiting, again?

Maybe you already virtually slapped me and told me to shut my mouth because you plan on buying the Galaxy Note 8 or LG V30 (or maybe the Essential Phone). I actually can understand why you might do that. The Galaxy Note 8 will have it all: big, beautiful display, dual cameras, S Pen, all the storage and RAM, decent-sized battery, water resistance, fast wired and wireless charging, and a headphone jack. The LG V30 will be right there as well with its big ol’ 6-inch POLED display, dual camera setup (one at f/1.6!), premium build, focus on media creation and consumption, and more than likely a DAC of some kind to bring you them quality beats.

But as I just mentioned, their software won’t be there. Samsung has gotten somewhat better with their skin, but I don’t know that LG has just yet. And again, when you are forking out close to $1,000, do you want average, not-up-to-date software? Maybe you do! But maybe this is the year that you stay patient and give Google’s vision for Android a try after being in Samsung or LG’s ecosystem for so long. I’m telling you, just as I told you back in December 2016, this could get awesome.

You waiting for the Pixel 2 or are you ready to pull the trigger on something else?

NOTE: The counter argument for the Galaxy Note 8 is now up here.

  • I’m not waiting because the phone comes out in November, too late for me.

Also the price Is too high for a Google made phone you have to earn that price premium.

3rdly i want a phone with a SD card slot

Coming from a happy Nexus 6p user.

  • I don’t buy flagships anymore because the price has become ridiculous. I don’t care what features you have… a phone shouldn’t cost $800. That’s why I’m not waiting for the Pixel 2 family.

  • My biggest issue seriously is the removal of the 3.5mm jack. I don’t know anyone who has come up with a solution to the fact that my car is older and doesn’t have bluetooth, but it does have an Aux port, and I use my phone for GPS. So I have to choose whether to listen to music/podcasts/audiobooks or to charge my phone, but I can’t do both with those dongles. If there was a Y dongle that had decent reviews where I could charge and listen, would be a total non issue for me and I would happily wait for the Pixel 2. But that Note 8 is seriously calling my name because of the 3.5mm port.

  • Nope. Got a S8+ on the trade in deal, killer price for a killer phone with almost everything I want. Would like front firing speakers, though. That’s the one thing I’d change on this. Other than that, it’s a great phone. Not paying twice the price for a Pixel 2.

  • Is this even a question? I respect the article but I am mind blown that people who are interested in the subject even have to read this. I mean, OF COURSE we are going to wait for the Pixel 2 and OF COURSE we are going to buy it. It doesn’t take a genius to wait for the most Superior device, it just takes a little patience, people, c’mon!! BTW, well said about software, my friend; wait so, people are still buying devices with the OS manipulated by an OEM, instead of enjoying the Superior UI of Stock Android? What is the meaning of this madness?!

[I’m on Nexus 6 still waiting for the Pixel 2 and my wife is on Pixel XL, loving every bit of it and making me “Jel” like “O”]

  • If they add some water resistance I would consider trading my xz premium in. Otherwise I am quite happy. It rains a lot where I live and have known more than one person whose phone broke from water damage in there pocket just running to there car lol. So I quite like the feature in case a downpour happens while out on a jog etc.

  • Awaiting Pixel XL 2 to replace my HTC One A9! Samsung’s S8 & Note 8 keep pulling me but I won’t give up this time. 😀

  • I’m not waiting because I waited last year and was disappointed at the price point. I had been using the Nexus line since Samsung was doing it and loved it. I didn’t need the slightly better flagship hardware and the price was a steal for solid phones. When the Pixel came out I was so disappointed that they slightly bumped up the hardware with a huge price bump. I bought a ZTE Axon 7 for half the price and couldn’t be happier.

I might have given the Pixel 2 at least a look but then saw the leaks about bigger bezels and lack of headphone jack (and no sd, which had already been standard in the Nexus line). I know a handful of people who have the Pixel and it’s a good phone, don’t get me wrong, but my Axon performs virtually the same at half the price so I’ll be sticking with that market for now.

  • False claims everywhere… I stopped reading halfway through… The superiority of stock Android is all in your head. The market share begs to differ. I like the stock looks, but the lack of features is just overwhelming. I always flash the most feature packed ROM I can find and slap a root, magisk and Xposed on it. Also all Android manufactures are making their own software, not from the ground up, but to some extent. And why would I wait for Pixel 2? It’s UGLY AF. Can’t look at it without my eyes bleeding.

  • Overpriced Nexus? No. Motorola, since they gave a big f*ck you to their customers in terms of battery, just to push more Mods? No. Samsung, with seriously nice design, excellent screens, native browser that supports AdBlocker, and Samsung Pay? Most likely.

  • My dad will definitely be getting the pixel 2 xl (coming for the 6p). I have a blue pixel XL, and might upgrade to the xl 2.

  • I’ve got a MXPE that I am looking to replace this year, and I really want to see what Google puts out with the Pixel XL2

  • Mostly price. I don’t believe $700-800 for a smartphone is worth it in 2017. The performance gap between premium and mid-tier is ever shrinking, and the value of the premium device will depreciate fast.

  • If you really want a headphone jack, last year’s Pixel is still one of the best Android phones on the market and Google has them on sale right now

  • Because nothing about the Pixel interests me and I could care less about the “pure Android experience”?

Good lord. People used to complain about DL and Samsung…oy.

  • I am waiting, after two years with the Moto X Pure, I’m ready for the new Pixel XL 2.

  • Because updates are its only unique selling point, really. Headphone jack removal is garbage and enough of a deal breaker on its own. Also, the note 8 and v30 might not get the updates, but their software has a lot more features. Updates are good, but so is having more than just a basic OS. No S Pen and all the cool things it can do. No audiophile and video/photo goodness like the V30 will presumably have. Back of the device looks weird. Costs way too much. Actually buying one would be difficult since Google always messes that up and can’t keep them in stock. No SD card support.

In short, updates are a big plus, but there are too many minuses.

  • I’m waiting on it, but I’m going to be cautious. Last year I went from the 5X to the Pixel, and the bugs were a dealbreaker. I didn’t send it back right away because I expected quick fixes, but I was very wrong. The Pixel wouldn’t work with Bluetooth calling in newer models of Honda Accord, and the problem wasn’t fixed until late spring. And I had a LTE connectivity bug (which was very bad but seemed localized to Verizon and limited cities in the US,) and I don’t know if it was ever fixed. After numerous calls to support and swapped phones, Google finally made an exception and gave me a refund. Other than the bugs, I really liked the Pixel, so I plan to give it another chance this year. BUT, if I notice any bugs that I can’t live with indefinitely, I plan to return the phone immediately and look elsewhere. Don’t expect Google to fix bugs any faster than Samsung or any other OEM, because they won’t.

  • I’ll upgrade when they pry my Shamu from my cold dead lifeless hands… or my battery dies.. or I break it and can’t buy another.. or anybody finally comes out with a suitable replacement. I would go Note 8 (had a Note 2, loved it) except I can’t stand the curved screens. Pixel2 XL 6″ at 2:1 screen ratio is too much of a downgrade, and no wireless charging kill it, don’t care enough one way or the other about the headphone jack, occasionally use mine but can live without it.

  • I wouldnt call rebadged HTC A9 and LG G6 shells “True Google Hardware Vision.” Apple got rid of the headphone jack so Google follows suit. I fail to see the “vision” part. Stock Android is great and so is a Camry but so what? It’s dull (not the 2018 Camry). No headphone jack…sorry who’s dumb enough to pay $850 or more to be inconvenienced?

  • Not buying it without a headphone jack, no matter how many idiots claim we don’t need one. There is zero reason not to keep that port, and the fact that Google had very good advertising last year (rightly) making fun of Apple for getting rid of theirs really makes Google look dumb. If Google does the same thing, again for zero good reason, then that’s the deal breaker.

  • I love my Pixel XL, so I am considering on going to the 2, but the lack of headphone jack is a bit annoying. If I can make a decent amount of my money back on my XL, then I will definitely consider upgrading.

  • You forgot to mention that the regular Pixel 2 will seemingly not have the beauty of the larger one. I might just keep my boring original Pixel.

  • There is NO compelling reason for me to change from my Nexus 6P. I need value added and i just don’t see it. I’ll keep my Nexus 6P until maybe the Pixel XL 3 in Q4 2018.

  • Have the 6p decided wanted a smaller phone. Got the s8. Hate Samsung bloat but this time they got it right and a headphone jack and micro sd to boot. It flies Samsung finally got it right. Has fm radio too so many little things work well.

  • The Pixel leaks so far have been meh and while your arguments hold true for most phones I doubt the Essential phone will fall victim. I am almost confident that the updates will be on par with the Pixels. And I am sure we will get the same set of features if not more on the software front. So I am holding out for the Essential but if the Pixels do turn out to be absolutely amazing I am sure the resell value of my PH-1 I will probably only lose 100-200 on the price. I am ok with that. But if nothing new happens on the Pixel than what we already expect then I will be completely happy with my Titanium build/ ceramic back pure Android with modular accessories PH-1.

  • Why am I not waiting for pixel 2?

No headphone jack + probably 1000dollars for the XL in 128GB internal because no sd support+ 4GB of RAM= I might even consider SAMSUNG before pixel.

As much as I love stock Android and detest TouchWiz, I feel like the note 8 might be bringing far more to the table than the Pixel 2 at this point. I am not happy to say that one bit.

  • I’m waiting for the Pixel 3 at this point. I got the Pixel and yea as all of you Nexus people have said, once you go pure, you never go back. My concern is that the Pixel 3 either won’t be on verizon or somehow verizon will screw us.

  • So here’s my take on it, I really like the expandable storage for when I’m traveling on the subway. I like to download YouTube videos, movies, and music so I can view/listen to them while on the subway. The fact that the Pixel doesn’t have expandable storage is Con for me but not a deal breaker given the storage is still pretty large at 128GB but 256GB would be perfect for me. Another thing is the yearly upgrade Samsung plans you can get on at Verizon (and I’m sure other carriers offer this as well) where you can upgrade yearly as long as you pay off 50% of the phone and stick to buying Samsungs. If Verizon had that kind of yearly upgrade program for Pixel phones that would be a big help in getting me to switch. Water resistance has become a big plus to me as I can now listen/watch stuff in the shower (I know I’m weird but hey it helps me wake up when I’m running low on sleep).

  • I feel like I am definitely the minority here. I pulled the trigger on the OP5 and it is the best phone I’ve ever owned came from the 6p. I was waiting for the XL2 however (Yes Kellen we all know how you feel about headphone jacks) but I NEED a headphone jack I am not buying a new car or using a dongle just because I want a phone that doesn’t have one….

    OP5 thoughts:
-SOUND: 3.5mm audio quality that comes from the OP5 is better than my 6p.
-SPEED: I used an S8 for about a week and it lagged all over the place.
-COST: the price to performance ratio on the OP5 is amazing.
-Battery life (wayyyyy better than my 6p)
-Cell radio and WiFi (works better than my 6p does)
-Sound from speaker (sound is ok, what I like is it’s louder than my 6p)
    -HATERS:
*Lack of water resistance on the OP5 (OP5 is more than enough water resistant look it up on Youtube),
*Only 1080p (I was worried but honestly looks better to me than my 6p display)
*Bad camera (This is not really a need for me I take pics and do video chat and for that I can’t really tell a difference in any other phone I’ve used)
*Jelly scroll (I haven’t had any issues with the screen at all)
*911 (Hopefully this is fixed now in case I need to call 911)
*Looks like an iPhone (I know but I think the iPhone is beautiful & OP5 has Android not iOS)

  • Always wanted wireless charging, water resistance, front facing speakers… can’t believe I need to add 3.5mm to my list of minimum specs. As for updates? They’re great, except they only last 2 years now? Not worth the Pixel price point! Maybe by the Pixel 3, El Goog will have more of a handle on chip design and can promise longer support timelines.

  • Im not waiting because I think the discount on the Pixel was good enough to just pick one of those up. Everyone I know still loves theirs. I WAS waiting until I saw that the smaller pixel was identical to the previous pixel but without a headphone jack. If they were shrinking the bezels but keeping the screen size I would have waited, but since its not getting any smaller no point in waiting AND paying a premium. Ill use my discounted PIxel 1 until they actually do something with the smaller phone, I dont want a phablet because I have a tablet.

  • Because the Note 8 is calling my name.

I’ve had the Note 2, Note 4, Note 5, and Note 7 (twice).
To me, the Note is the pinnacle of the smartphone world and my body is totally ready.

  • Pixel XL owner going with the Note 8.
Im Sorry, but after reviewing this year’s Pixel models nothing is impressing me.
When everyone is jumping on wireless charging an you are not implementing it.
    REMOVING THE HEADPHONE JACK.
Implementing waterproofing a year later. (Feels like google trying to pull an Apple)
I think i will spend my money elsewhere.

    • If my choices were having a headphone jack but having to put up with TouchWiz or no headphone jack but stock Android then bye bye headphone jack. I’m certainly not happy about no headphone jack but with Bluetooth headphones and a USB-C to headphone jack adapter I’d deal with it. No way would I put up with TouchWiz.

      • My wife has the samsung s8+ so from my personal experience playing with that phone… Samsung really took a minimalized design on touch wiz. it is no longer that slow and stuttering touch wiz of old.

Bluetooth – The Google Pixel is still having a lot of Bluetooth issues and it is a problem. That is with syncing and sharing music. i am using the android o beta to determine if the update will fix the issue, but i still having the same issues. So as far as moving to a totally Bluetooth solution, this is further reinforces my issues with removing the headphone jack.

USB-C headphones – it would be great if there was one standard for usb-c headphones. As for right now everyone is selling proprietary dongles… So it is difficult to just walk into the store and pick up a set of headphones. Also not only are the dongle proprietary they sometimes suck. So in most cases you will lose quality by using them.

        • We must have a very different idea of minimal. I’ve used the Galaxy S8 and TouchWiz is still awful. Bixby is a joke too.

For Bluetooth I’m not sure what your problem is. Maybe your phone has an issue or maybe it’s an issue with the Pixel design. I have a Nexus 5X with Android Nougat and have no issue with Bluetooth.

What do you mean standard for USB-C headphones? One of my co-workers has a pair of USB-C headphones that he has used with several phones with no issue.

Again, I would certainly prefer having a 3.5mm jack. I’d prefer the better audio quality compared to Bluetooth, not having to charge another device and being able to charge my phone and use wired headphones. However not at the expense of having a customized version of Android. The only thing that could make me put up with a custom version of Android (especially TouchWiz) is insane battery life. If the Galaxy S8 had a 4,200mAh or bigger battery that’s the only thing that could get me to put up with TouchWiz.

  • The lack of headphone jack makes this a deal killer. Kindve over the Nexus/pixel program right now anyways. Keep coming back to Samsung. Held out to the last second with my note 7 return. Was excited I was going to have another year to play with a Google phone after that note 7 crap shoot. I freaking hated the issues with the pixel XL!!! No thanks too screen burn. Seriously don’t know how no tech site even covers this. Hopefully LG didn’t do Google dirty like HTC did last year. Loving my Gs8+! Damn note 8s pen. May not even bite at that one this year.

    • No headphone jack does suck but certainly not as bad as having to put up with TouchWiz.

  • The Pixel experience rules. Good reason to keep rockin’ it and wait for the Pixel 3.

  • I am really disappointed with Google + Huawei and Google + Lg with their Nexus 6P and 5X respectively. Their failing phones with well known defects and absolute lack of support when the devices fail, curiously enough, just after factory warranty has expired has been awful, disappointing and disgusting for me and for many. I love Nexus or Pixel concept but all this events have made me seriously reconsider Google phones again… Don’t know which other Android based brand (OnePlus maybe… Nokia,…Moto…) will be the one, but if a Pixel 2 could be up for consideration then Google is going to change and improve it’s post sales support significantly and improve, correct and take responsibility when well known factory defects are identified, especially in a massive global way.
In the meantime lets have dreams of a potential cool phone in the Pixel 2 line.

  • Google would really have to knock my socks off on this one to get me to jump. After swearing I wouldn’t get the S8 primarily due to the FPR location, I got it AND the S8+ – ended up deciding I prefer the smaller one so giving the S8+ to my mom. The FPR location still sucks balls, but I’ve gotten used to it; still don’t like it, but used to it.

With that, I REALLY wanted to get the Note 8 for dual cameras alone (and I like the s pen for the occasional use it gets with me), but size wise, preferring to stay small at this point (hey sammy, how about an s9 with an s pen or mini note 8/9?). I just really wish sammy did dual cameras on the S8 like the G6 (that was and still is the reason I haven’t sold my G6 –> yet, sitting in a box collecting dust, but that wide angle camera ROCKS).

If el goog does dual cameras with one being a wide angle, that’s a notch towards buy for me. But I’m 100% confident they wont do wireless charging which I frankly truly love. Then you have samsung pay, which, honestly, I don’t understand why android pay can’t work the same way with MST? Seriously, why not? Though, I think the primary reason I love samsung pay is hearing the checker say “that won’t work here” only to have them astonished that it did (except for home depots and lowes for some reason?).

We’ll see what happens. I would say now it’s a no, but I’m a sucker for new flagships, so I’ll probably get one anyway. Damn mobile tech addiction!

  • “The lack of water resistance, the high-price tag, and the uninspired design weren’t for everyone and certainly gave me pause throughout the year. But look, all signs point to Google dealing with at least two of those issues (the price isn’t going to be lowered), while throwing in some added bonuses.”

Actually they aren’t dealing with the design either if you don’t want a phablet-sized phone. So the correct statement is “at least one of those issues” (assuming the speculation about IP ratings proves to be correct).

  • I’m waiting for the Pixel XL 2. No question. I imagine anyone in the market for the XL version who has even a passing interest in the Pixel phones is doing the same.

But if I was in the market for the regular Pixel, I would just go ahead and buy the current version discounted from Google. I think it is extremely unlikely that we are going to get a last minute surprise and the Pixel 2 is going to be radically different than the leaks (including a picture of the actual handset). The Pixel 2 is going to be a large bezel phone with stereo speakers, no headphone jack and probably water resistance. It will be a good phone (but not a great phone) for a ridiculous price ($650 before taxes if we are lucky). Unless you really, really need water resistance or stereo speakers it makes sense to buy the current Pixel before it is sold out or Google discontinues it, while you can still get the discount on a brand new phone. Or it makes sense to buy something else. The Pixel 2 just does not seem worth it for the price they are going to ask.

I suppose they could reduce the price which would be fantastic but chances are slim.

  • I’m not happy about about the lack of headphone jack and it seems like even the regular Pixel 2 is going to be too big due to huge bezels but for stock Android I can probably get over that. The one thing that I really care about most is something we don’t know yet. How big will the battery be for each phone. With the pathetically small batteries we get on most phones that is what I care most about now. I can’t stand non-stock Android but if the Pixel phones don’t include a reasonable size battery I’m going to have to skip the Pixel and try to find a phone with the least crappy customized Android that had the biggest battery. I’m guessing that will probably be Motorola.

  • I usually like most of the things you write Kellen. But dude… after this one I can’t help but picturing you standing in line outside of a “Google Store” days before said device goes on sale, excitedly waiting to be herded in with the rest of the flock.

    I jest… couldn’t help myself. ;-P

  • “Software, software, software… ”
    =
    Boring, Boring, Boring…

If only stock Android wasn’t sssoooo “plain”. Hopefully Google will continue to add more (useful) standard features to it. Then 3rd party apps won’t be necessary to accomplish what other OEM software already has baked in.

  • I was waiting for the Pixel 2. I decided to do so back in March. But now no headphone jack. Whether I’m charging while issuing the headphone jack or not (I do every week) a dongle is not an option.

The price of the Pixel 1 isn’t likely to come down to a justifiable price for last year’s tech, so that leaves me stuck on my Nexus 6 until it gets too long in the tooth to deal with, at which point I’ll have to give up on Google Fi and go to a carrier that has a phone that meets my needs.

  • The reason I did not wait is because I couldn’t buy the darn thing. It was out of stock for soooo long, just like any Nexus/Pixel phone. I can’t/won’t wait months to own a phone. If they want me to come back (I hope someday I can) they need to make sure the darn thing is in stock and not months later.

  • Just broke down and bought the Pixel XL, 200$ off with a free dreamwear hard to beat. We needed phones to take advantage of the free year of sprint service and could not bare the idea of using a lesser phone. If my service is going to be sub-par my phone might as well be excellent

  • Samsung started to “debloat” when the s6 came out then they went back to adding features. Samsung Experience runs much better but it still is slower compared to other snapdragon 835’s because it is clocked lower and still has too much bloat. For example i have disabled 100+ packages on my s8+.
The pixel 2 does look to be fixing the hardware shortcomings coupled with the smoothest android experience should make for a great phone.
Also are some phone sites losing traffic? I’m seeing more opinionated articles to spark controversy.

  • Pixels don’t have as good of hardware as other phones, namely the Note series. Software is only part of it. I care more about hardware.

  • I’ll most likely end up with a 2017 Pixel of some sort, unless the Essential phone gets praised like none other in reviews. But then I’d have to ditch Fi, so who knows.

  • Lack of headphone jack. I’ll stick with last year’s pixel as I do not believe the minor bump in specs will be very noticeable but the lack of jack will be very noticeable.

  • These phones might sell a million each. And only to the hold over Nextards (“herpaderrrrrp NNNNNEXUSSSSSSSS”)

Apple is going to put a out a midrange device to succeed the SE model and it will definitely give you eeeerections lasting more than 4 hours.

  • Because the Pixel is on sale, and I want a headphone jack and to save a bit of cash.

  • Excellent article, and I agree. I’ll be going from the Pixel XL to the Pixel 2 in October, unless I can’t resist the Pixel XL 2, even though I really want to get back to one handed ease of use in a pocketable form factor.

Google adds good speaker(s) and a decent level of water resistance this year, since they’re not “rushed”, and I’m good to go.

  • I AM waiting. There is nothing else out there released (or about to be) that holds my interest. If the phone is skinned – not interested. If it has physical and/or capacitive buttons on the front of the phone – not interested. The loss of the headphone jack is no biggie. Rarely ever used it. So, that basically leaves the Pixel 2 XL as my only choice.

  • I will wait to see which phone is the best, my Note 4 is getting old and slow, but right now I’m leaning toward the Hydrogen One by Red.

  • I’ve been waiting on the Note 8 since the Note 7 BS. The Note 7 was the best phone that I’ve ever owned. I don’t remember feeling that way about a phone since the OG Droid. When I had it I felt like no one’s phone compared to mine. From the beautiful display, to the new S-Pen features, to the fact that the camera was so bangin that my friends used the pics I took at their wedding as their Facebook wedding album, the phone to me was phenomenal.

“But, but, but, lag & Touchwiz. And Edge displays so gimmicky!” To you. To me, the phone [was] the best phone out there, just like whatever phone you use is the best phone out there to you.

    That’s why I’m not waiting.

  • I just got a new in box Pixel XL 128gb on Swappa. Got a good deal on it for $685…but then Google went and dropped their price by $200 3 weeks later. so….could have paid just a tiny bit more and have gotten the phone and 2yr protection plan straight from Google. O well…But now that full retail new is cheaper….so will aftermarket new and used phones. Getting a Pixel for around $400-500 is a excellent price for such an amazing phone.

My LG V10 was on its last legs and so switched back to my Moto X Pure, but that drains fast when just playing a 1hr long vid. Needed a better phone sooner, rather than later. To impatient anyway to wait until November or so for the Pixel 2. Then wait longer for people to get their hands on them to do in depth reviews and comparisons…and barring any first run production issues/defect…etc. I also looked at the HTC U11, Sony Xperia ZX Premium, and Mate 9. But the pure stock android and os update appeal of the Pixel won me over.

Don’t care if back design looks odd, its covered up in a case. Its far better a phone an super awesome camera. Well worth the upgrade from my LG V10 or Moto X Pure. And being able to download and install OS updates as soon as they are released from Google for the next 2 yrs, no other product line has that.

I definitely want dual front facing speakers lough…(nothing has beaten the Moto X Pure in that aspect.) I would hope both Pixel 2 models have them, not just one model. I would hope they would improve the camera even more as it does have lots of noise in low light and to record audio in Stereo, not Mono. A f1.6 cam in the LG V30 would be nice. Super slow motion feature like the Sony Xperia aslo would be nice.

No Headphone jack on the Pixel 2…meh…that is annoying having to use dongle adapter and can’t charge while in use. Would have to buy multiple dongles cause i lose one or want to leave one at multiple locations etc.Though, i do use a external USB Headphone DAC anyway for serious music time. But Bluetooth with AptX, HD, and LDAC support….don’t use wired much theses days. Even without those codecs, the Pixel sound great over Bluetooth using PowerAmp and its EQ.

Unless a catastrophic disaster happen to my Pixel 1, ill probably end up waiting for the Pixel 3.

  • Every year I get the large capacity 128 gb,I did with the Nexus 6P and 64 gb with Nexus 6. I tell myself that I need to hold out and I always end up selling it…damn u!!!

  • Had a a note 7 and we all know how that went so I needed a large phone to fill the gap and I didn’t want some old model. Then I heard about the pixel out of nowhere and jumped on a xl at launch day. I really love this phone and all I want for me to pull the trigger on the xl2 is some sort of waterproofing because of my job and smaller top and bottom bezels. Give me those 2 things and I’ll be buying it on launch check day again regardless of cost since I love the stock Android ecosystem so much. P.S. a 7 inch pixel tablet would be great to replace my ancient Nexus 7 2013

  • Oh, I’m waiting. I am eager to see what Google will be doing with these phones. It’s time to upgrade my 6P.

  • If they come at us with some Bulls#@t 3,300 mah or lower battery there is no way in hell I will give them a single penny. Moto Z Play (2016) is STILL battery king. WTF? A mid-tier phone from over a year ago is still power king. If google F’s this up then there is nothing to talk about. Also, get rid of that crappy “G” pill on the desktop that has no way to customize. I don’t want to see that garbage with no choice to remove it.

  • Take the Pixel and make it look like the S8+ and you have a winner. Sorry, but the Pixel is very plain Jane in looks but that software is awesome!

  • I think the most obvious reason is because the Pixel 2 lacks what those people need, be it a headphone jack that saves their daily lives and cures them of cancer, a pen that makes their finger obsolete, or whatever it is that sets the V30 apart (extra crystals or something for clearer images?) because really anyone not tied to those features has no excuse not to wait for the Pixel 2 unless they really just don’t like Google or their designs or something arbitrary like that.

  • I don’t know if this sounds rude but why do you care that others are not waiting for the phones? I’m patiently waiting for the Pixel 2 and will purchase it on day one and it doesn’t matter to me that others are not waiting. I will have my hands on the phone sooner because of people jumping ship.

  • I keep my phones for at least 2 years. So I’ll be using my Pixel XL until the Pixel XL 3 releases lol.

  • I’ll be waiting to upgrade from my 5X, no headphone jack is a deal breaker though, especially when i can get a cool S8 or something with one.

  • The reason I am not waiting for the Pixel 2 is that I feel truly betrayed by the Pixel 2’s design. If the renders are correct, it really does look like it belongs in 2016. I feel alright about the XL’s look but I am one who doesn’t want a giant phablet. The fact that the phones are not identical in form seems to me like Google is forcing people like me to choose a larger phone to get lost. The Essential Phone is really what the pixel should be looking like. It has a premium build quality of titanium and ceramic as well as a great modern display ratio.

I understand that software is important but for people like me willing to pay any price, we don’t want to compromise style OR performance. If the Samsung can create something beautiful in the S8 and Essential create the best build of any phone to date, why doesn’t Google manage the same? I had high hopes for the Pixel 2 but fear that it will lack the sex appeal of the S8 or Essential phones.

  • First Article: Original Pixel and Pixel XL on sale for $200 cheaper with free google daydream on play.google.com!!!!!!!!! Why aren’t you buying this second, omg greatest deal evaarrrrrrr

Second Article: UM, why aren’t you waiting for the new Pixel 2 and Pixel XL2?!?! They will be the greatest phones evaaaaarrrrr!!!!!!!!

Third Article: Why we didn’t buy the Pixel 2 or Pixel XL2…………………………….

  • Project Fi has been definitely a plus for me on my Pixel XL and a considerable effect on cost of ownership. May go to the 2 just to give my son this and save him a bundle each month. Surprised this benefit isn’t mentioned more.

  • Posts like these are really tone deaf and echo chamber-ish. Pixels have no expandable storage and now no headphone jack. There’s nothing to wait for as far as I’m concerned.

        • When your internal 128gb fills up, and you don’t like automatic, unlimited, cloud backup, just dump it onto your PC, bud.

          • I carry all my data with me #TheMoreYouKnow. Seriously though, I’m not here evangelizing my use case because it works for me. You don’t have to convince me about yours either, because it doesn’t work for me and I won’t use it. I need adoptable storage, period.

  • With the recent sale on the Z2 Force and the current sale on the S8, I can handle being a little behind when I am paying less than half the cost of a Pixel/Pixel 2.

  • Sorry, but I don’t care about your opinion. The headphone jack is a deal breaker. I won’t buy a phone without one unless it ships with a case with one. I need a headphone jack and I need to be able to use it when charging. There’s not a debate here.

  • Because not everyone wants to use a phone that “forces” you to use all of googles cloud services even for simple basic stuff.

  • Now I’m waiting after all those good points. I was leaning towards the Essential PH-1 but now will wait and see the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2.

  • Oh I’m definitely waiting for the Pixel XL 2! Retiring my N6 and it can’t come soon enough.

  • I just upgraded from the Moto X Pure to Pixel XL. Why? VZW made it cheap, and Motorola no longer cares about updates.

  • I’m waiting for the V30 and Pixel 2 XL… But the HTC U11 is still on the top of my list at the moment.

    • If I could get a carrier version of the U11, I’d have one right now. But work won’t pay for my phone if it’s not attached to my phone bill.

  • I am not even excited about Android O. Seriously, I don’t. If you talk about new features, like picture-in-picture, my S7 can already do that, not only videos but also other apps. Smoothness? I haven’t seen my S7 had any hiccups since it got Nougat (yeah, it was laggy on MM). I used to be obsessed with the latest Android version in years but I’m not anymore, especially the new release brings not many great things. In fact, I hate Android 7.1 because why the hell did our Big G have to increase the API level for almost nothing but exclusive features for Pixels? And right now, what is the percentage of users on 7.1? Google could have implemented their “Pixel skin” on Android 7.0 such as app shortcuts and built some APIs of 7.1 into 7.0.
Marshmallow (I’m talking about the stock one or at least CM13, not just the TouchWiz-based MM) was the worst release I’ve ever tried. It took too much time to install an app compared to KitKat and Lollipop and later Nougat, so once N builds were stable, I went up and felt so happy that it solved all of annoying things I faced on MM.
I have a few different Android devices built by different brands, and I spend most of my time on my S7. If I wanted to try out the Android O so I could jump to Lineage, and if I didn’t like it then I could jump back to Samsung. I have more choices of “experience” on the S7. However as far as I feel comfortable with everything I have for now, I don’t actually care about Android Oreo.

  • No headphone jack. Also, I’m really fond of my Xperia Z3C and its 4.6″ screen. So much so, that I literally just bought a new X Compact rather than wait for the new Pixel (yes, I’m aware there’s a new Xperia compact coming out soon, it’ll be more expensive than I can afford).

  • Because Google is unreliable in putting out new products such as half-baked (Allo) or announces but then takes forever (new sharing features) or launches but then can’t manage the supply chain to feed demand (Pixel).

  • I don’t want it: just paid $420 for a like new pristine mint XL on Swappa as a backup for my Project Fi account.

  • Just waiting here. I don’t trust my 6p to last another year. Google gave me a OOO swap due to the issues so i am ok for now but will be glad be rid of it as soon I can. Main thing i see with leaks is bessels the leek you show here looks great but we have also see the real life pictures of the alleagdy test phone with much bigger top and bottom bezels (looks like a 6p ) I can life with that but i like the render better as long as it has god front speakers.

  • Legit question because I haven’t kept up…. but will we need to be worried about LG’s bootloop issue for the XL 2? Or has LG fixed that problem? That would be my biggest reason to hesitate getting the XL 2.

    • I think they have fixed that issue. From what I have gathered, it was mainly only an issue with their 2015 devices.

    • This is my question as well. Had too many LG phones have this issue between me and my family.

  • Because we’re not all hypocritical shills who are okay with being told what we want.

EDIT: Oh yeah and the god-awful availability that has always plagued Google’s releases. Boggles my mind.

  • Another reason I may not wait for Google is that I’m trying to avoid overpaying for phones going forward. The OG Z Play completely changed my mind about what I actually want out of a phone. I never really felt like my S8 was worth MSRP for example. But it’s just a weird space to be in being as an “enthusiast” always wanting flagships because we just want the best.

    • I already crossed that bridge. It’s 600 series phones from now on for me. Hopefully the 630/660 ISP will get us flagship level photo quality.

  • You know, I was a bit hyped for the Pixel 2, but I jumped into Apple’s ecosystem. Main reason being the camera system (specifically the optical zoom), 3D touch, and iMessage. It’s hard getting a similar experience on Android (specially the ecosystem between the Mac and the iPhone). And as of now I don’t feel any remorse. Battery life on the i7 Plus has been superior than me previous Pixel XL. Apple Watch beats Android Wear (in battery and software).

Hopefully one day Google will have a similar ecosystem and just as stable’s as Apple.

    • I’m just happy my Android phone doesn’t try to launch iTunes whenever I plug it into a computer.

      • I don’t think I have ever connected my iPhone to a computer and the only times I connected my Android was to sideload OTAs because STAGED ROLLOUTS :@

        • People I work with plug into computers all the time because their batteries are constantly about to die.

Quick charging may not be an option any iPhone user cares about until they see my Pixel charge at least 2x faster.

          • You know, I’ve been using an i7 Plus for over a month, I have yet to run for a cable. It’s currently at 34%. 10.43 hours since the last charge.

I solved the charging issue by buying their 12W charger. It helped a lot. (Now I can charge it in about 1.5 hours using the 12W, vs 3 hours with the 5W charger).

Sure, I’ve seen tons of people struggle with iPhone batteries, but I have also seen the struggle with Galaxy’s and LG’s.

  • The only reason I won’t wait to get a Pixel 2 XL is if there’s some really spectacular deals on the OG Pixel XL.

  • My coworker has wanted to make the switch from Apple to Android for about 2 months now and asked my advice. I told him to wait until they announce the Pixel 2, then decide what to do. I showed him the article earlier this week with the leaked Pixel 2 photos with no headphone jack and he ordered a Galaxy S8 later that night.

  • V30 will be cheaper. Also is it actually going to be water resistant? As you say if one is spending almost $1000 on a device it shouldn’t go belly up just because it gets wet.

  • Because no carrier payment support (T-Mobile) means no deal. If I could JUMP to this phone I would be all over it.

  • So as someone who always had a Samsung phone and went Nexus 6P. I definitely am on the Google train now. If they got rid of this line, I’d probably go iPhone because updates are very important to me as I learn about security and software stability.

That being said, I love my 6P. Should I a) upgrade to the Pixel 2/Pixel XL 2, b) upgrade to the Pixel b/c of the discount offered currently, or c) just hold on to my 6P since it will get O and another year of security updates?

  • Because it doesn’t have a headphone jack. I think it’s adorable that you point to your opinion article on why you personally don’t need a headphone jack as a reason why it doesn’t make sense for anyone to care that the Pixel 2’s don’t have headphone jacks though. I hope you enjoy paying more money for a phone that has options removed.

Is this supposed to be an advertisement for Google? Why do you care that people might not want to get the Pixel 2 phones?

  • Frankly, I wasn’t blown away by the look of the Pixels. They just weren’t sexy enough. I actually like to look at my devices with lust before I can use them. Great software and UI can’t make up for fugly designs. Note8 or bust!

    • well, you always have women, or men, you can look at with lust when your phone doesn’t do it for you anymore.

    • You know, the Pixel may not be the best looking phone out there, but the thing just works flawlessly. However, I just wish it had one standout feature from the rest.

      • No, the Pixel did not just work flawlessly. There were Bluetooth issues and apps force closing. Why go under this premium Nexus branding and charge us more when its actually just the same Nexus experience all over again? I liked my Pixel – but it was not flawless.

  • I am waiting for the Pixel 2 XL… if my phone doesn’t kick the bucket before it comes out. It’s having SIM slot issues (not the tray, the slot). Also, I like my current wired, noise cancelling headphones and don’t feel like ponying up more money for the wireless version. The other issue is Google’s poor track record with supply: if my current phone dies while I’m waiting for the Pixel 2, I am SOL. I am torn between the Pixel 2 XL and the Note 8 (big! can take notes with pen! water resistant! headphone jack!).

  • Are y’all familiar with the term FUD?

    It’s what Apple does.

Put out a bunch of rumours about what you might could possibly put out there and generate Fear (of missing out maybe), Uncertainty, Doubt in the hope that people will wait for the later product announcements. (the term is more used in the software world, but whatever…)

    This article is exactly that.

“Here are some theoretical cool things that you might could get that may be better than those things that might could be better, are coming sooner, but hold on until we’re ready to put our stuff out, because undoubtedly ours will be better.”

I’m not missing the point that this article is not a Google article, but it might as well be.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m a Google fan (“Thanks you Google Overlords!”). But I’m not fan of BS marketing ploys.

    • The new Note and Pixel will be great phones. It all comes down to preference. You know Googles display will not be as good as the note or GS8.

    • Agreed. I like the article, but I take it with a grain of salt equivolent to the articles that are “Here’s our first look at the (new phone)” and it’s tagged as a Concept with expected specs.

    • I’m not sure if it is google’s FUD, but it seems like an opinion piece garners clicks and postings into the comments. What other news article has this many comments ever since they hid the comments section?

  • I’m waiting. I can’t pull the trigger on a non Google phone yet. I like my easily unlockable and rootable phones.

  • I’m waiting because my Nexus 6P is showing its age and I am so tired of waiting i thought about going Samsung S8+ but I am trying to be patient.

  • I am strongly considering jumping on the Iphone 7s after years of Android devices. 3rd Nexus 5x currently and none of my apps supported beta O. My kids all love their iPhones and not a single issue with a single device or ios version. I had been very excited about the Pixel 2 until I saw the bezels.

    • As someone from an iPhone household it has some amazing benefits. Find My Friends for the kids, sharing apps, music and photo’s on your accounts. All things Google can do, but getting the family to switch isn’t easy.

  • Kellen, I always love to come here to the site to hear your perspective. But you are hyping these Pixels up way higher than they actually are. I get the subjective bias, we all like what we like, but outside of software which most don’t care about running the latest version, the rumored Pixels look wack. The Htc Pixel 2 looks like trash. C’mon the design alone not to mention possible missing features with an expensive price tag. No way. The LG Pixel XL2 is another “meh” head turner for me with possible missing features. If you pay as much as Google will be charging for these units they shouldn’t be missing anything. I just don’t see how they set themselves apart from the pack for those that don’t care about software. Just saying.

    • What do you get when you add a bunch of features to a bad experience? A feature-filled bad experience. Just saying.

  • I’ll be all over it. Turned in the U11 to get the Pixel XL and man I love it. I only wish it had full screen and water resistance. And what do you know? It’s coming with it. So yea I’ll be all over the XL 2. Hopefully T-Mobile will be carrying it as well, but that would just be icing on the cake. Seeing as how I never used any of the Nexus phones, using a stock Android has been the best

  • Part of the problem is that Google is last on the Launch list by at least a month.

Our Kind (phone enthusiasts) generally just don’t have the patience at this time of year. Note 8, V30, iPhone 8…..then a month Later Pixel.

As for software updates, as much as I complain on the community’s behalf… I don’t care as much because there’s hardly a phone I’ll keep past 12 months anyway.

With all that being said.. After selling my S8… I just want a new stock device. But I want something different. Which is why I’ll either Pull the trigger on the Essential or just low ball myself into the Z Play (which i still want back). Depends on what I think I should spend.

  • I’m just keeping the Pixel I have. convince me the hardware will be THAT much better, that I will want to shell out the money to upgrade.

    • I’m with you. My Pixel is perfect after almost a year’s time- I cant’t imagine that I will be able to justify replacing it…but that’s not to say I won’t be tempted.

      • Based on what I know now (and making some assumptions about Essential), I’ll either buy an Essential Phone, a Pixel 2 XL, or just keep my Pixel (5″).

I’m not upgrading to a Pixel 2 (5″) with the big bezels – sorry, not gonna happen.

I might go against my preference for smaller phones and get a Pixel 2 XL assuming it’s not huge (I’m hoping that full screen makes it smaller than the Pixel XL).

But the Essential phone, being a small phone with a full screen, still has some of my attention despite the recent blunders. Will DEFINITELY wait for some reviews though (and probably wait for an Ocean Depth model if I go this route).

I definitely won’t hate keeping my Pixel 1 though. It’s damned good.

        • The Pixel 2 XL will be bigger than the Pixel XL which is already too big. The Pixel 2 even with its huge bezels will still be far more manageable.

      • My only complaint is the battery is as amazing as before. I don’t get 6 hours of screen on time anymore, now it’s like 3. Standby time is still there though so when i’m not using it it doesn’t die as fast as all my previous phones.

      • I don’t think I would ever give up a 3.5 mm for Bluetooth. because I know my pixel has discrepancies while playing music once in awhile and the car using Bluetooth. It’s minor but if you’re actually a music person who likes music, then 3.5 mm is the way to go imo.

    • I got the XL fully loaded during the second release, they have fixed everything that was an issue, my Bluetooth is perfect between my car with an aftermarket pioneer, my wife’s stock VW headunit, my headphones and my speakers in the garage. It also doesn’t have any of the weird screen glitches of going black or not coming out of sleep. To top it all off it’s miles above the Note even with the lose of pen.

    • Yup there is no reason to act like an iPhone owner and stand in line at the Apple store.

6.0 is fine for my phone, though I really do like 7.0 on my Asus 3S tablet.

      • I actually miss Marshmallow. I didn’t like the visual changes they made in Nougat. Marshmallow on my N6 was the Tits!!!

    • There is really not much performance difference from a 820 to 835 cpu wise. It is more or less the same speed but with incredible battery gains +40%

        • That is what qualcomm has stated and those are the results people are getting, including myself, from a snapdragon 820 821 to a 835.

    • I don’t have a Pixel but if I did the only thing that could make me upgrade would be if the new Pixels came with a battery that isn’t pathetically small like the current Pixels and almost every other phone on the market.

I’m currently on a Nexus 5X and I’m looking to upgrade this year or early next year. I really want to stick with stock Android and I’d even be willing to put up with no headphone jack to keep stock Android but a tiny battery is a deal breaker.

        • Then you must be a really light user.

The Pixel has a 2,770mAh battery and a 1080p screen. The Pixel XL has a 3,450mAh and a QHD screen. Those are tiny batteries for the screen resolutions. Good battery life needs at least 3,300mAh for 1080p and 4,000mAh for QHD.

  • I won’t buy another LG made phone, so that rules out the pixel 2 XL. Really… I’m sick and tired of making excuses for an $800+ smartphone. These manufacturers are screwing everyone is some form or another. My 6P is slowly dying and I have no idea what to replace it with. I’ve never had a phone as good at the M7. Is it bad I want to go backwards?

      • Even with the subpar camera, I’ve never had a better phone, both in terms of design and software.

        • I still yearn for the LG G2 sometimes – which I know goes against your LG thing (which I totally understand), but I loved that phone.

          • Buddy of mine had the G2. Fantastic phone! The only LG I owned was the G4. But everyone still wishes they could get an upgraded G2.

      • I think that’s a Load of crap, I liked the M7, but the Bluetooth functionality was complete garbage along with the pinkpurple tint. Software was amazing, but not nearly as fluid as the Pixel phones.

        • Never tried BT with my M7. Mostly because audio through the 3.5mm jack was astounding for a phone. And remember, the M7 had an SD800, which is quite a bit behind the 821. I also never had the purple tint (got lucky).

  • Samsung Pay with MST.

It doesn’t sound that great or even important to people who don’t or can’t use it, but it has been a serious game changer for me.

    • I’m in the same boat. BUT! I also have the Gear S3 Classic — and it has Samsung Pay, able to function without a Samsung Phone.
I’m considering jumping to the Pixel (on Fi) from my current S7. I love the expandable storage & water resistance / camera, but the stuttering has gotten to a point that I can’t stand any longer and I’m not nearly around enough water to warrant IP68 that as a high priority.

      • I really like the Fi pricing. I’d love to switch but unfortunately Fi uses the worst two cell networks in the country. I live in a large metro area (San Francisco bay area). T-Mobile is bad and Sprint is a joke.

    • I agree, MST is pretty damned amazing (at least here in the US). I don’t understand why the technology has been sold beyond Samsung – it’s pretty great! That’s about the only thing I’m envious of on Samsung phones though. But not envious enough to buy a Gear S3.

      • Samsung bought the company that came up with the tech. They own it other companies would have to pay them (I’m assuming A LOT) to use it. I’m all for others using it though. I’d love to see it added to Android Pay.

  • I’ve been burned by two Nexus devices in the past… so I’m kind of done with Google made phones, be they Nexus of Pixel.

  • I wasn’t planning on upgrading this year cause I love my Pixel & it’s still running great but then a friend said he’ll buy my Pixel from me, so now I’m gonna wait & see how the new pixels are.

  • I’m kind of hitting the point where anything over $500 I don’t even pay attention to anymore. It just never seems worth it. Just saw the Moto x4 leak again, I’ll see where that goes.

  • I’m not even getting anything quite yet (i’ll probably get something new next spring), but for me no headphone jack = no go.

I use that headphone jack in plenty of places beyond just headphones, and dont want to have to carry around a dongle, and also want to be able to easily charge and play at the same time.

  • I am absolutely waiting for them to upgrade from my 6P. I’m at that point where all I really want to read about are the Pixel leaks…

    • Same. My 6P dies at about 20% now. The battery doesn’t last for crap. My fingerprint hardware sometimes stops working and requires a restart. Very ready to move on…

      • Knock on wood, I don’t have the issue with mine shutting down early, but battery life is rough.

      • I have no suggestions for the fingerprint issue, but if you want to squeeze more life out of your 6p for relatively little cost, you could have the battery replaced. I had mine replaced and the phone is about as good as new. Helps me wait for the latest and greatest phone, whatever that may be.

        • Did you do it yourself or have it done? I’m interested in doing this too. Mine dies from 40% on down with the random battery die not to mention the battery doesn’t last nearly as it did a year ago.

          • I had it done, I think it cost me $80. The parts and tools I would have had to purchase would have been about $30 to do it right, so it was worth the extra $50 to insure against the high probability of me screwing up the repair.

          • Yeah I’m with you on that. Where did you get it done? Did you have the random battery die issue before? If so, did it fix that issue?

          • I said it to another person on here but contact Google support. They’ll replace it for free even outside of warranty

        • I too did the same thing and have experienced the same results after replacing the battery.

        • I havent had any issues(yet) with my 6P, but thats something I never thought of. Thank you.

I always thought it was a hardware/software issue vs the actual battery itself. Either way, glad your is working well. Thanks for the tip!

      • I had similar issues that stemmed from an OS upgrade. My 6P and pixel both died with some % (up to 40!) In the tank. A factory restore did nothing. A re-flash from my computer, fixed the issue completely.

      • Contact customer service, you might get lucky. Sometimes they give out refurbished replacement. 😉

      • If you bought it through Google contact them they replaced mine for free even though my warranty was expired

      • I am on my third replacement for this issue. I was out of warranty, but got them to replace it anyway. I’ve had the device since launch and returned the original device for another reason, but even it was only 9 months old at the time.

Point is, is that they said if this replacement that j received yesterday has the same issue, they’ll give me a full refund. Going to use that to purchase the pixel XL 2.

      • Had my 6p battery replaced in San Jose for $40. Made a world of difference but the first batch of batteries the shop got were defective and would die at 60%. They got it right after the second back from a different supplier. Main problem I have now is Bluetooth issues but still need to do the 7.1 upgrade.

      • Contact Google support. They replace 6ps due to batteries crapping out even outside of warranty! Done it for mine AND my wifes now. Def love their service

    • Get rid of that 6P it emits too much radiation. That is why it is always warm and has early battery failure.

      • That’s nice and all but we already know there’s a camera bump from the CAD leaks. The Pixel 2 is not bezel-less at all. Other than that it’s a nice little video.

    • Same here but from a Nexus 5, lol. One thing I’ll miss is wireless charging but just like the lack of a headphone jack, I’ll get used to it.

    • I would love a 6p with sd 820, 821, 835, 625, 626..

      Upgrade to 4GB of RAM

Keep everything else the same, I would pay some money for that..

    • it’s sad that Google doesn’t announce Pixel sales figures (thousands, you can “see” them in HTC’s quarterly reports)
which would instantly calm this SAMSUNG-sized hype over this “Google’s pure Android vision” humble success in reality.

      • I personally don’t care how many they sell (as long as they sell enough to keep making them in the future). The number of sold phones certainly wouldn’t sway my opinion on why I personally like pure android over other options.

    • Nexus 6p, what a terrible and overhyped device by android media. And you still want vanilla android and device made by Google? At iphone price?

      smh

  • because they’ve botch every single launch since the beginning of time and they never have them in stock? even for months after release?

Even if I wanted to, for a phone that has very little actual demand in the grand scheme of things its pretty hard to get. no idea why.

    • They’re much like Nintendo. Have great products but still don’t know how to estimate the demand or how to produce for that demand.

      • Suspect Samsung couldn’t supply enough displays to meet Pixel demand. That’s probably why Google offered LG $880 million to increase their capacity to supply OLED displays for Pixel 2.

      • For what? The Pixel 1 had no specials on BF, and they didn’t once reduce the price until last week.

I’m done with Google. Even on Verizon, hardly anyone bought the 1, because it is overpriced. I’m about done with Android. Everyone is so amazed that I say that, what with my undying loyalty since the Nexus One, but the getting timely updates for two years isn’t worth nearly as much as getting them for 5 with iOS.

My next phone may not be an iPhone, but it sure as hell won’t be a pixel.

      • This is my biggest regret. I got mine early November 2016 on the $300 credit for my S6…. My friends waited for black Friday and got theirs for effectively free on the edge program. I got $300 in credit, I think they got that same $300 in credit + $200 off that makes the monthly edge payment 0.

      • with unlimited storage on google photos app, you don’t really need a micro sd expansion anymore nowadays. especially since that unlimited video/photo storage is uncompressed original quality photo.

    • I love music, listen to podcasts all the time. To each their own, but I just don’t get this response. Bluetooth is pretty decent, and real audio sounds better on my home stereo anyway. I’m sure I’m missing something, just like I was last year when all the Apple critics were out. I just don’t get why you’d skip a phone like this for no headphone jack, but I’m not going to stop you either.
