LG’s Android skin, currently known as UX 6.0+, is by no means my favorite. It’s not that attractive to look at, it’s bloated with stuff and things, and more than likely is the reason I keep finding myself setting most LG phones aside after polishing off a review. And that’s too bad, because LG’s hardware is getting really good, I like what they are doing with dual cameras over other implementations, and the V30 is poised to be their best phone yet, maybe by a mile. But you know what LG is doing with their time and money instead of revamping that Android skin into something that could be a selling point? Creating professionally made videos on how they spent an enormous amount of energy putting together a wallpaper. Yes, a wallpaper.
The LG V30 will have a wallpaper created from a vision of “realistic light movement and mysticism” that utilized angles, colors, contrast, and “dispersion of light” because wallpapers need a “mysterious atmosphere” to be great. I’m not making this up. LG – and this isn’t the first time – created both a blog post and 1-minute long video to talk about the phone’s stock wallpaper.
I just can’t. Happy Friday!

I think the skin and features on the G6 is fine. Personally, the android stock skin and features are boring as sh!t to me. I also didn’t like what Samsung was doing with their touchwiz skin when I messed with the S8 at Best Buy.
Could lg’s skin be a bit more polished, sure, but that’s no reason to constantly bash them to your readers. Stock and touchwiz need a lot of help in my opinion. Plus Samsung is the king of crap features in their skin and its difficult to navigate and find things in the settings.
Most of the readers of this site have never even used the lg skin, but bash it constantly because you write articles like this.
I thought this looked familiar…

IMO, the skin was great with the G2 UX, then UX 3.0 from the G3, and UX 4.0 from the G4.
After UX 5.0 it has turned to garbage. I am waiting for an LG UX 5.0 compatible theme that will bring back the style and icons from UX 4.
Ok someone explain to me why the skin is bad? I have had many LG phones so I’m not getting the outrage. What do other skins do, give you free handjobs?
If an icon is one pixel to the right compared to stock…
I was sold on the V30 until I saw the Mi Mix 2. Now I’m torn unless it doesn’t come out in the US.
After using a Nexus 6 and then a Nexus 6p I jumped on an LG V20. I find it refreshing to have the bells and whistles that are lacking on the Nexus phones. Who knows ho long it will last.
Hopefully the Pixel XL2 is based on the V30 hardware
Other than not having a headphone jack….sure.
Whaaaaat? Isn’t the Pixel is 100% Google design???
You’re implying a great skin only takes time. It also takes skill, which apparently they don’t have in that area.
Gotta justify the $800+ price tag somehow, you know?
As a live wallpaper that changes colors like it did in the video while they were moving the lights would be dope!! I’d install it on my xl! Cheers
This comment was spammed, i don’t know why, I didn’t mess with the Guidelines of this Site so I’ll post it again.
I think you’re a little too critical on LG’s Software, take a look at their Optimus UI from the days of the LG G2 and look at their UI on the LG G6 that is today, I’ve had the LG G2, great device! but the Software in that time wasn’t polished as far as performance is concerned, I’ve owned the LG G6, and not only is their Software well polished, it’s less jittery compared to it’s competitor (Samsung), some days it’s just smooth sailing with a few bumps on other days with the LG G6.
I even played with Demo Units of the LG G6 and Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 stuttered more than the LG G6.
Your statement about LG’s UI implies that they never bothered to refine it, when in all actuality they have, bit by bit, the LG G3 was the first step in overhauling their UI, G4 their second step, G5 their third step, G6 their fourth step.
The refinement I feel you’re looking for is something along the lines of Stock Android, I can’t stress this enough, not everyone is fond of Stock Android (including myself), for those who are fond of it, the Pixels are at your disposal.
And if any software that is “bloated with stuff and things” it’s the Galaxy S8, Bixby is just one of the “bloated with stuff and things” you can’t disable or change unless you sideload it, which is inexcusable, LG gives you more freedom to do what you want to the UI, with Samsung however there are some restrictions.
Android is not only about “Be Together, Not The Same”, it’s also about Customization, freedom to do what you want to your Smartphone, and I feel Samsung goes against that.
LG’s software isn’t the end of the world, there are much worse UI’s out there and LG’s is not one of them IMO.
And as far as LG making a video about them creating a Wallpaper, I would agree that it seems a bit exaggerated, but I commend them for their creativity and Descriptive look to detail, again, a bit exaggerated, but not as bad as you’re making it seem either.

Optimus UI 2.0(the LG G2) was the best. The G3/UX3.0 and the G4/UX4.0 are also very good.
But IMO since UX5.0/G5 they have not refined anything.
Everything about LG’s product design, branding and especially marketing strikes me as still being highly “Korean” in nature. Not that this is an inherently bad thing but I think it does pose more problems for them in the NA market than it does in Europe, Africa, and Eastern markets.
Yeah I tried a G4 between my Nexus 5 and 6p and the skin is why I went back to a Nexus. I just hated it no matter what I did. It was to the point that I had replaced every stock app I could with a Google app and I still hated it. I’ve played with a G6 at best buy and it does seem massively improved now but then I opened the dialer and was like “um I’ll wait for the next pixel”
For the love of god, LG, why?? DROP THE SKIN. It’s really simple: you’ll save lots of money, and people will like your phones better. NO ONE buys an LG for your skin, whatever it’s called. Some people like me actively stay away from your phones because of it. So no skin = more revenue + lower costs = higher profits, and better PR buzz. Win/win/win. And that’s my free business tip to you this fine Friday.
Agreed 100%. I can see Samsung & perhaps HTC making a case to stick with TW & Sense but EVERYONE else will save $ and pick up accolades by going bone-stock Android, the possible exception of something like the camera app and maybe a few lockscreen customizations.
And just as many people stay won’t buy a phone with “stock Android” because its bland, boring and shows not creativity. Its a two way street.
Interesting, you really think so? I’ve always assumed that 95% of phone buyers have no idea what a skin is, and that nearly all of the 5% who do prefer skin-free. I figure skins are a talking point for phone store reps but stock Android could be too, there’s lots to talk about. So that’s an interesting perspective you have, not one I hear much.
He is right, ever since JellyBean, the LG UX has been better than pure stock. The only exception is LG UX 6.0.
Yes I have used several pure stock AOSP-based ROMS, from ICS all the way up to Nougat.
95% may not know what a “skin” is, but that doesn’t mean they don’t prefer the look and feel of a Galaxy UI over stock.
I can give them a pass on the “stuff and things” based on the fluidity of the UI. The V20 was the smoothest Android device I’ve ever used outside of a Nexus or a Pixel.

Kellen must have gotten *another* call from Samsung reminding him of his allegiance.
Except the Pixel is his daily driver, so, yeah.
You’re new here, aren’t you?
Jeez, forget one little sarcasm switch….get /roasted
“’bloated with stuff and things” Why I jumped the sammy wagon.
I used the LG v10 running Nougat and the Skin was actually fine with me. Way better than it was on Marshmallow. Especially after applying a Pixel UI skin from their LG store thing. It didn’t seem that much different from stock Android if you used third party apps and launcher.
Whats left to reveal about this device?
Differences between standard and Plus variants: storage, wireless charging, DAC specs, pricing.
Preach. It’s my gripe about my G6. A launcher and icon pack can only do so much.

I would consider getting this phone over the Pixel 2 XL if it was bootloader unlockable.
