When is Android Oreo Coming to Your Phone?

Don’t own a Pixel or Nexus and want to know when your phone is getting Android Oreo? According to Google, it could be before the end of 2017. During the Android Oreo announcement, Google listed out a handful of companies that they have worked with in order to get Android Oreo ready for dispatch as soon as possible.

When is your phone getting the Android Oreo update?

The blog post from Google states that “by the end of this year,” hardware makers including Essential, Nokia (HMD), Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony are all “scheduled” to launch devices running Android Oreo or upgrade them to it. In other words, if I just listed the maker of your phone, there is a good chance that that company’s next phone arriving this year will launch with Android Oreo (LG V30, Galaxy Note 8 come to mind), but that there is also a chance your phone will see the update before 2017 is over.

As we get more specific dates from these guys, especially for phones like the Galaxy S8, G6, Moto Z2, or U11, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I’m not on the beta program for my Pixel XL, but does anyone know when I will get 8.0? Just “rolling out” or is it expected way later because I’m not on the early beta program?

  • This is really why i switched to Pixel. I was tired of the yearly wait for Samsung to think about updating.

  • I hope this means the Huawei Mate 10 will come with Android 8 when it is released and not just updated to it shortly after release.

  • I find it interesting that the Nexus player finds itself on the list once again, a device that came out the same time as the Nexus 6, yet the 6 is left out 🙁

    • Probably because the Nexus Player has a 64-bit CPU while the Nexus 6 is 32-bit.

  • Since I only buy a new phone every 2-3 years, I never expect to be on the latest version when a new version is released. I have a S6 edge+ now on verizon and surprised I had nougat for a few months now. Its a new phone year for me as long as I can settle on either Pixel XL2, V30, or N8, but if I decided not to go with the pixel, hopefully V30 and N8 still launch with oreo.

  • Considering that Nougat is 13% of distribution pizza graphic, most people will know Android Oreo by the time we celebrate Android Q or R.

  • Yikes. No mention of ZTE. Hopefully my Axon 7 will get it by the end of this year if not Q1 next year at the latest. We were promised at least O so it’s just a waiting game at this point.

  • “When is Android Oreo Coming to Your Phone?”

Today. It’s also coming to my tablet today.

  • Come on……Verizon. You’ve bee doing a very good with updating the Pixel. Don’t let me down 🙂

  • My V20 has only received one update in a whole year, so I guess LG will jump to 8.0

  • My Galaxy S7 isn’t getting an update until 2018 guaranteed. I’d bet everything I have on that.

  • The android mascot looks like it belongs to LGBTQXY and is confused what gender it is.

  • I still wouldn’t be surprised if the Note 8 Launches with 7.0, but I am more likely expecting 7.1.1. Gotta say 7.0 is working a treat on my S8+ I’m almost worried about what will happen when Samsung updates it.

      • I’d be shocked if a phone that was supposed to be announced (possibly avail for pre-order?) on the 23rd (TOMORROW!!!!) will have an OS that was just announced yesterday. Yes, I know it has been in beta, but Sammy is NOT NOT NOT going to release their flagship phone (especially in light of the N7 debacle) without thorough testing of a finished product. No Beta fills that gap. By the end of the year? Surely. But at release? I’d be shocked.

        • do you really think samsung didnt have access to the final build weeks ago? All will be shown the 23rd

          • I suspect they have the final build and are testing it. Agreed. Doubt highly if it will be on their flagship phone, especially given the “bomb” (pun intended) of the N7. They will have vetted the bejeezus outof that thing, you can bet. Indeed, if it does ship with Oreo out of the box, it means Google’s probably been sitting on a stable build release for a while.

    • Can you look and see if you can set “disable absolute volume” from within the developer options and make it stick? AKA leave the developer options and go back in and its still on?

There is a longstanding bluetooth bug that is only fixed by this but they have only had it so it could be set in the beta versions, the permissions are broken for it in the release versions.

      • I’m on the Nexus 5X, and it stuck. However, I haven’t connected any Bluetooth devices to actually attempt a test.

        • Thanks. I suspect that will get me. Its working great on the beta (the issue is with a device that doesnt have a volume control, been a problem since Dec 2015) but I was never able to get that setting to stick on my 5X on a release build.

    • Verizon has been pretty good about updates this year…the OEM’s, and specifically Samsung in this case, is who I’m worried about.
