Back in 2013, now-former Android engineer Dan Morrill explained to us that mashing the “check for update” button in Android was a waste of your time. Fast forward to today and things have changed for the better, according to Googler Elliott Hughes, as long as you have the latest Google Play Services. The “check for update” button now works as you want it to!
At the time, Morrill explained Google’s gradual rollout of Android updates and the fact that within the first 24-48 hours, only about 1% of devices would ever see an update. So even though we might have told you that a new update had started rolling out, hammering on that “check for update” button every hour or few minutes wouldn’t ever do anything if the 1% had already been filled. He also explained that tapping the “check for update” button the first time was actually doing something (like rolling the dice), but subsequent taps were a waste if you missed out until the next batch (like say the next 25% of the rollout) was scheduled to start. Unfortunately, if you weren’t a part of that group either, or didn’t tap the button in time, you’d again miss out until the next batch.
Starting now, though, that all changes as Google has tweaked the “check for update” button to flag the action as “user-initiated” and will let you bypass those 1% or 25% limitations. In other words, if an update is ready to rollout, even if it’s in the early stages, you hammering the “check for update” button will send you the update. That’s huge news!
Here is what Hughes said:
One thing I haven’t seen the tech press notice is that the button in Settings to check for an update actually works now. If you’re running a current Google Play Services, you shouldn’t need to sideload an OTA or flash a system image just because you’re impatient…
How does this interact with the gradual rollouts of new releases, you ask? When a device checks in because you’ve specifically asked it to, we flag that this is user-initiated and so you’re not subject to the usual limitations. So even if we’re at 1% rollout and 1% of users already have the update, if you manually check you’ll still be offered it, even though a background check at the same time wouldn’t.
I should mention that this is more than likely just for Google products, like Pixel or Nexus devices. Your Galaxy S8 or LG G6 or HTC U11 probably still function very differently.
Hammer away!
Yeah still not happening for me, 7.1.2 6P on Project Fi. Something is missing here, like maybe this is only the case for builds beyond 8.0.
Has this worked for anyone yet? I am on a N5X. Google Play Services v11.5.17 (440-169142033). Tips?
The key here is the Play Services. I’ve seen the Play Services update roll out in stages as well, and my guess is that won’t change. Android Police usually does and apk teardown of the latest play services and has it available to download and sideload. Every time that I can remember I would check my version and it would be older than the downloadable version, even after checking the play store for updates. I wouldn’t be surprised if that update would take weeks to get to everyone as well, therefore meaning weeks until your check for update button works as stated.
It’s a bunch of bull as far as I am concerned. N6 still stuck on 7.0 and the Match security update. After mucho mashing. The promise of fast, direct updates had been as truthful as the cake.
I mashed that button for a week trying to get the September patch on my unlocked pixel XL before resorting to sideload. Waving my BS flag here.
Per sarge
We don’t recommend hitting your Samsung device repeatedly because…well you know.

This new feature will be rolling out over the next 6 weeks
Do anyone know when Huawei p10 plus will get it’s update
Moto x pure… Check for update… Nope still on Marshmallow
I gave up and sold mine, or I’d press that button again for old times’ sake.

Pretty sure it’s still not going to do anything for my phone.
It’s about time! What a great concept! Allow the update to be queued when the owner asks if it is available!
Ha ha ha, this might be THE quintessential DL article.
Doesn’t appear true. I’m on 5x 7.1.2 August 5th update, and I heard the Sept update was out. I mashed that check button 10 times and no update.
I am in same situation and I am on google Fi service
It wasn’t true for my pixel c. I clicked that button about every day…nothing. I finally got the ota update on its own.
*Except the Nexus 6P. The Google black sheep.
Only because the 5X users aren’t as vocal. And have mostly moved on.
6P users could live with early battery shutdown for a while, waiting on a solution. 5X bootloop, not so much.
Agreed, the 5x is a hateful phone. Lucky Goldstar anything has always thrown a giant red flag though, I don’t care how much anyone apologises for it.

I’m glad they’re finally doing this! I won’t have to resort to flashing an OTA image anymore due to this being useless to try….. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/0553d24760c1774529cd7020516a43d48cabe5afa0865dc4428c8126ec7c541c.gif
I hope this is true! I have hammering it on my Nexus 6P to no avail so far.
Finally!
It never made sense to have the button in the first place if all it meant was that you were going to randomly select me to be able to download it. Also, although I understand the sentiment behind gradual rollouts I never agreed with it entirely. Great for the average person who doesn’t care but for me, who is in the know and wants my update, just give it to me damn it!
I have a feeling those of us on the Moto X Pure waiting for Nougat are still SOL though.
Marshmallow until our solar system’s sun is exhausted and the earth is rendered utterly lifeless.
Okay, probably after that too.
Best case, maybe the final Marshmallow security update for the Pure will also remove the “Check For Updates” button? LOL
Great, but this year’s pixels look like a pass for the most part negating it for me :-
Google Fi 6P on 7.1.2 – nothing happening for me
I only just got O like 2 days ago and it failed to install the first time. AND I was a beta tester. Keep mashing you’ll get it.
Still not happening
6P user on 7.1.2…no difference here. When is “starting now”?
Soon!
When will then be now?
Soon!

Anyone know when my Droid X will get ICS?
In the coming months
October 32nd, man. Guaranteed!
Per sarge
Damn. Been a while. Nice.
When Fede gets that new LauncherPro version completed. 🙂
You’re taking me back!
I’m running Liberty ROM anyway
The LauncherPro rewrite will be availabe next month.
Congratulations! Your comment has officially won Friday, September 22, 2017. I think we’re all waiting for what has to be the most epic rewrites in the history of rewriting things that need to be rewritten.
Jokes aside, there’s actually a functional KitKat ROM for it – https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2670547
you gotta trade it in for an X2 if you want ICS 🙂
This is great since now joining the beta to get the stable won’t need to be a thing.
I wonder when they changed this? Veggie the Sept. security patch hit my XL, nothing happened when i hit the Check For Updates button.
Someone probably got sick of you leaving suicide notes when things didn’t go your way.
My OG Droid is still waiting for Oreo!
Finally.
About Darn Time!… Just checked…no Android P. Yet

perfection.

“Damn you people, go back to your shanties!”
Not so fast there, Galaxy.
Google has notoriously slow rollouts of OS updates, so this is huge news. Back when I had Nexus phones the agonisingly slow rollouts infuriated me. Hallelujah!
Too bad this is just in time for no more nexus devices 🙁
The legacy lives on in the Pixels.
The legacy lives on starting at $849
It *starts* at $649.
Pretty much every high end phone is that level now.
I’d be super excited if I didn’t already have Oreo/Sept update.
As it is…meh.
I’m sure I’ll appreciate it when Parfait hits. 😉
Popsicle
I suppose they could go Peppermint. Ech…
Obviously going to be Android Paczki (poonch-key) with as many new changes as there is calories.
Paczkis are freaking great! ????
Def gonna be Pirog in reference to our new Russian leadership. Lolololol
Neat.
the update. That’s huge news!
