Verizon Introduces Prepaid Family Account With Discounts for Multiple Lines

Verizon introduced something today called the Verizon Prepaid Family Account. No, it’s not a family plan, but an account that includes multiple lines and is prepaid. I know, that sounds incredibly confusing. Let’s try to figure out what this is!

According to Verizon, the Prepaid Family Account is a way to get multiple family members onto Verizon Prepaid, so that everyone has their own data allotment to pull from. The benefit to having a family account would be that Verizon gives you per line discounts as you add more to the account. The amount of the discount all depends on which prepaid package you choose.

For example (and you can see this in the chart below), if you buy four Verizon prepaid lines at 10GB per line, you’ll pay $60 for the first line, which is the full price. However, as you add more 10GB-$60 lines, you’ll get a $20 discount for each new line (up to 5 lines). So for those 4 lines, your price would be $180 per month without a contract or background check (plus taxes and fees). The math there is $60 x 4 lines – $20 each for lines 2-4 (60 x 4 – 60 = 180). That make sense at all?

To keep it simpler, let’s look at the Unlimited plan. If you and your spouse each want unlimited, you’d pay $140 per month for the two of you. That’s $80 for each line, minus $20 for line 2, thanks to the Prepaid Family Account discount.

As you can see below, the 10GB or Unlimited plans offer the $20 discount per lines 2-5, the 7GB package offers a $15 discount per lines 2-5, and the 3GB plan only offers a $10 discount per lines 2-5.

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Two people on 3GB plans for $35 each? That’s basically as good as Fi pricing with more data. I pay about $30-35 monthly but always try to keep my data usage around one GB to keep the price down.

  • I tried 5 different carriers and found that metro pcs is better service than at&t, Verizon and cricket for example. I pay $150 for 5 phones on unlimited. Metro PCS is best all aroundand well be even better after sprint merger

    • MetroPCS/T-Mobile is the best until you go into a thick building, basement, elevator, or rural area of the country 🙁

  • Wow even their newest “deals” are a joke. I can get unlimited on 4 lines with Cricket for $160! And that’s *with* taxes and fees which no doubt will add a lot more to that $180 on VZW for 10Gb each. So really, you are probably pushing over $200 for the VZW plan. Yeah, what a deal…

    • And you get cricket service with 8 Mbps data caps. Some people prefer verizon based on where they live and rather not have the limited speeds. This is coming from someone who has used Verizon, switched to Cricket, then AT&T prepaid. I’m moving back to verizon once I get an upgraded phone (Since the OnePlus 3T doesnt work)

      • Damn, I love Verizon because I get service almost everywhere, but 8 Mbps is double or more than what I get on Verizon. If I could get 8 Mbps with Verizon, or someone with their same coverage I’d be set. I see 1-4 Mbps about 95-98% of the time. On a rare occasion I see up to 20-25 Mbps.

      • Some people may require more than 8 Mbps but for a PHONE, this has been more than adequate for me and totally worth not getting boned by Verizon anymore. Anyone with a “family plan” with more than 2 phones knows exactly what I’m talking about.

  • Can you mix and match plans? Could I go with a 10GB but my wife and daughter go with the 3GB since they use substantially less data?

Edit: Would that pricing then be $60+ 2x($40 -$10) = $120 total for 3 lines?

    • Yes you can. Or use the $40 plan for the main line and get $10 off the other $40 plan and $20 off the $60 plan so a total of $110
