Samsung is hosting its developer conference in San Francisco next week and it may act as the showcase for Bixby 2.0, according to a report from the Korea Herald. The report also suggests that Samsung already put someone new in charge of the smartphone assistant because of a “lackluster” response to it so far.
Chung Eui-suk is now the head of Samsung’s service intelligence group and in charge of further developing Bixby. Chung has been with Samsung for a bit and has previously worked in research roles at Samsung. This move takes Rhee In-jong, Samsung’s mobile chief technology officer, off of Bixby development.
Today’s report sure hammers home this idea that Bixby hasn’t exactly been well-received. It talks about how most consider it a beta and not necessarily a polished product thanks in part to it still struggling to clearly understand all commands. Of course, it also points out that the English version of Bixby was delayed for a couple of months.
But the big announcement here could be in the form of a new version of Bixby. Samsung is expected to announce the new version during the developer conference, a version that will “supplement the incomplete parts” of Bixby 1.0. They are thought to offer more developer participation going forward, as well as expand into additional third party services and products, including those that aren’t smartphones. (I’m thinking it’s time for that Bixby speaker, no?)
Samsung’s annual developer conference will take place October 18-19.
How many of you are using Bixby regularly? What would you like to see in Bixby 2.0?

Bixby has actually worked pretty well so far. My biggest complaint is Bixby home, it takes way too long to open and doesn’t have much useful information.
I think I actually like the V30 implementation of that idea the best so far. It’s super fast at updating and just has a few things that are easy to glance at.
I use Bixby on a nightly basis for one thing to start my sleeping sound app. I find it annoying or old school that I have to hold the button and talk at the same time. I used it while on vacation recently to send a couple of text messages to people in the group I was in, but I can’t see using it for that now that I’m back to the real world.
Bixby must die.
Just got the note 8 and I’m actually pretty happy with bixby so I’m surprised at all the negativity. Bixby is capable of some pretty specific commands. I use Google now launcher and the button for bixby when I want to use it
Too funny! Public: “Bixby, eui suk!” Samsung: “Wait, I know how we can make it suk more…Put Chung Eui-suk in charge!” Public: “Now it’s going to really suk!”
It probably did 30% of what I wanted it to do, and it’s slow. Tried using it exclusively for a week. Only lasted a few days.
That is great for the people who have s8 phone and not the same for the other phone that can not have Bixby on their phones
I like using bixby and google assistant. I like the ability of bixby to do multiple steps in one command. If bixby had Google’s voice recognition it would be awesome.
Here is a protip.
get rid of it. Worst part of my S8+ is I now have a button on the side of my phone that does nothing. Completely disabled.
I don’t use any voice assistant too often but Bixby definitely has a leg up over the rest for local tasks. My main complaint would be it’s a little slow watching it complete the command so hopefully that improves over time.
I really wish they would put their time and effort elsewhere. Improve touchwiz, add more features to the Spen or anything
Because they can’t do both?
with that remark are you saying you actually use bixby?
Ok Google….
Bixby really isn’t that bad, it’s just kind of unnecessary. Google Assistant does a better job.
Google assistant doesn’t do local tasks on your phone.
Exactly, seems most just echo others without really having used it.
Bixby voice actually seems to work pretty well at performing the tasks I ask it to do although I’m not sure how useful the are. What I really want is for Samsung to fix the Bixby homepage so it’s not a generic total piece of useless crap.
Bixby 2.NO
How does it hurt you?
For starts, now I have weigh into my decision when considering a samsung phone “Do I really want to deal with an extra button that I’ll probably hit accidentally repeated that launches an assistant app I have no interest in using?”
Second, I’m forced to put use a 3rd party launcher since the native launcher hijacks one screen for an assistant app I no interest in using.
Just stop Samsung…sometimes less is more.
I have it disabled.
Idea for samsung. Have Bixby linked to google assistant. And then remove bixby.
Brilliant!
I actually use Bixby on occasion. It’s more reliable than Google Assistant when it comes to contextual commands (i.e. “Remind me to feed the dog when I get home”). Plus, I have to confess that I enjoy earning points towards my Samsung Pay Rewards every time I use it.
But I never know what I can and cant ask it. Samsung points would be nice though.
