Because we all take massive amounts of pictures of our pets thanks to all of our pets being awesome, Google is making it easier to locate them all in Google Photos. Starting today and rolling out globally, Google will start showing your cats and dogs in groups alongside all of the people you currently see.
Instead of just a “People” category, you’ll find a “People & Pets” category that includes your furry friends too. You’ll be able to name them and quickly make albums or movies out of the pictures of them. Additionally, Google says that you’ll also be able to search by breed, so you could search for a Poodle or Maine Coon and find results, plus they are letting you do animal emoji searches with cat and dog emoji.
Google didn’t specify if you’ll need a Photos app update or if this is a server-side change. My guess is the latter.
Google Photos is awesome.

Weird, my dog has been in the People feed forever now… Yet, I do see a lot of false positives. Maybe this will fix that
Too bad the rest of Google Photos sucks from what I can tell. Tried to use it as a solution to store my photos going from a 128GB Pixel XL to a 64GB Pixel 2 XL but I don’t think it’ll work.
No way to import an existing folder structure and have it maintain it? It wants to sort everything into year > month > day folders. DUMB.
Photos are already sorted in the app by day month year… I am using a iphone 8+ for a study and my photos show up right.
That’s not what I want.
I want my photo structure that I’ve been using for 10+ years to be recognized and maintained by Google Photos. I have one pictures folder with 12 sub-folders named like “Sports”, “Car Stuff”, “Motorcycle Stuff”, etc.
I uploaded 4000 photos to Google’s service and it broke 100% of my organization and re-sorted everything based on year > month > day the pic was taken instead of grouping things together.
For example: I have a folder with my motorcycle pictures that is organized by “bike 1”, “bike 2”, etc. It completely undid that.
So I had bike pictures mixed with sport pictures, for say, 2017>9>8.
As far as I can tell, that’s how it works. Which is terrible.
Call me crazy, but wouldn’t it have been smarter to research this before uploading 4000 photos? Maybe start with ten and see what happens first? Or check the Help section to see if the sorting options you want/need are indeed available?
Seems to me you have no one to blame but yourself.
Not really a problem. I have backups of everything so I restored it in like 5 minutes. My point was whether it was 10 photos or 10,000…using Google Photo’s ‘backup’ function of an existing phone/structure…it gets completely broken.
Google Photos isnt meant for that, so its not the programs fault that you are trying to use it outside of the intended method… a solution for that would be Titanium Backup maybe
Not sure how my ‘use case’ is outside the realm of what I’d expect a ‘photo sharing and storage service’ (their words, not mine) to be/do. Creating albums from an existing folder structure on upload seems like a pretty common sense thing to do.
I’ll look into TB, thanks.
Google actually does have a solution for this – to keep your organization AND be able to use the auto-organization features of the app. Don’t use the uploader, instead upload directly to Google drive, and check the box:

That said, it is a free app and way smarter than anything on the market. It seems like you are looking for more of a dropbox solution.
Thanks. I did this, actually, at one point after the main test failed and it did maintain my structure in the Google Photos folder on the drive, but when I went into the Photo’s page…there was no albums. Have you tried this yourself? Is that part still a manual effort (creating the actual albums to keep all of my car pictures in one place, for example)?
Thanks for your suggestion, I’ll continue to mess with it until I receive my P2XL in hopes of finding a solution so I can offload about 35GB off my phone (between my music and my photos).
and google photos has been like this since it launched. I personally like the way it is. Free storage for 4k+ pics wow you want more that that… sheesh
Not free. I have 100+GB of space I pay for. Willing to pay for more if need be. But way to read into it whatever you want lol.
I do use it to store my original quality…. Google photos saves pics up to 16mp at there original quality. Show me a smartphone camera that has a higher than 13mp shooter. Also with the pixel and pixel 2 you free original quality storage. Yes it will compress 4k video to 1080p video that is the one trade off. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/35e2aebcfbb06ce508b64a9b547a2753009d48f7f640c884f10f7d746bd0aa84.png
i see nothing. just the usual stupid people
It’s likely a staged rollout. You’ll get it eventually. ????
Was hoping they would add this, but had no expectation that they actually would. Well done Google. Made my day.
