Samsung Officially Opens Up Galaxy S8 and S8+ Oreo Beta With Samsung Experience 9.0 (Updated: Live!)

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ update that features the Samsung Experience 9.0 as well as Android 8.0 Oreo is now official. Samsung announced the update this evening as an early beta for select devices that will go live November 2. Owners of these devices in South Korea, UK, and the US will have an opportunity to test it.

Samsung describes the update as the Samsung Experience 9.0 that is “based on the Android OS,” which is a funny way of referring to your Android skin, but I’ll just leave it at that. The update does include Android 8.0 Oreo as well.

UPDATE: IT’S LIVE. GO! GO! GO!

If you are interested in participating in this beta program, you can do so by downloading the Samsung+ app to your phone. That can be found in both Galaxy Apps and Google Play stores. Once you have the Samsung+ app installed, you’ll open and look for a Galaxy Beta Program option under a “Registration” menu towards the top of the app. I’m not seeing it at the moment, so I’m either blind or it’s not live quite yet. Assuming you find the option, you’ll register and then head into Settings>Software update>Download updates to check for the beta file.

According to the beta FAQ for the US, eligible devices are S8 and S8+ units from Sprint and T-Mobile, as well as non-operator-locked devices and open-market versions. In other words, Sprint, T-Mobile, and the US unlocked units should work.

Anyone able to grab it yet?

  • I got it at 10:17AM pacific today and I am on and Unlocked S8+ (purchased from Samsung) but using VZW sim. So you can get it on VZW if you ordered an Unlocked version from Samsung.

  • So my device has already been registered. I always register my devices when I purchase them. With that being said, I can’t register my device again, when I try it says “Duplicate Device”. However, I still dont have the Beta Program option available anywhere in the Samsung+ app. Did I screw myself out of the Beta program by registering my device?

Side note, I was able to take advantage of the Beta program for 7.0 on my S7 Edge with no issues.

    • clear the cache on your samsung + app in settings apps
should show up on the top of the app when you reopen it

      • Didnt work. I think it’s because i’m unable to “register” my device at this time due to registering it back when I got it. So I can’t “trigger” the Beta Option to show up in my Samsung+ app. This sucks…

        • I registered my device when I first got it. Tried same thing, register again, and got same message. Still got into beta program

          • Well, then good to know it wasn’t due to me registering my device early. Guess I just didn’t make the cut. Maybe the Beta program was closed by the time I tried. Thanks for the info!

  • Got the update (Unlocked S8+) and enjoying it so far. Feels speedier to me. Edge bar is much quicker with no stutter. Some of the look has been cleaned up. I’m on NOVA though so not sure how much else has changed with default samsung.

Video still unusable with Image Stabilization on. Have to turn it off or else video recording stutters, at any resolution. Anyone else have this issue? Also if I have image stabilization on it takes a good 5 seconds after hitting record until it actually starts. That is minimized without IS off as well.

  • I had the “Enroll Now” option available in my Samsung + app but once I registered my device, I got a message that said I could download it once the official/final version was released.

  • Got it! It didn’t show up even after I updated the app. So then I decided to force stop the app and then re opened the app and wa-la! It was there! Yay! 😀 (T-Mobile S8+)

  • I keep getting “Unknown Error: Something is not quite right. Please try again” when I accept the terms and conditions after trying to register. I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S8+. Is anyone else having this problem?

    • Yeah I’m getting that. So you have package disabler or anything like that installed? I’m trying to figure out if it’s something I did. Someone else said switching from wifi to lte worked for them. Did that. Not even a reboot works. Wonder if the servers are slammed..

      • Nope. I don’t have that installed. I tried wifi and lte, but no dice. I was also wondering if it may have been the servers.

      • I haven’t had a chance to play with it since it was installing while I was in a meeting at work. I’ll be able to play with it tonight.

        • Please update me on the emojis. And update me know any new features? Maybe features that have been added to the S8 from the Note8. I really wish Google and the wireless carriers hurry up to apply RCS messaging for Android.

  • I have a verizon s8 that i purchased from samsung.com directly and then flashed the unlock firmware on it…
the card for beta enrollment showed up for me in the samsung+ app and 5 minutes after i enrolled i manually checked for updates, and it prompted for download….installing now

  • Not seeing anything either. I have a Verizon turned unlocked device, but do not see registration anywhere.

  • I can see why Verizon isn’t doing it. If something screws up cause they want to Beta test then that means warranty swaps and insurance claims go up.

  • I’m so confused. I’m sitting here looking at my T-Mo S8 and I don’t see a registration tab anywhere in the app. I see Get Help, Diagnostics, Home, Learn and Community. In the menu at the very top left (3 horizontal bars) I don’t see anything that resembles “Registration”. Also, when I tap on Samsung Galaxy S8 just under that black menu bar, I see my S8 (This device) and it’s listed under “Registered Devices”, so that leads me to think it’s already registered.

Also, I’ve read several reports that you had to ‘register’ for the Galaxy Beta Program in this Samsung+ app, not just the Global Beta Program that other users have to use outside North America.

Can anyone help clear this up?? I find it too hard to believe there’s going to be this magical neon lit light around a button that says “Get your free Android 8 Oreo beta here!”

  • Hundreds of users grabbed the beta today before Samsung caught on to our little early bypass 😉

      • The people who already flashed the beta just opened the Samsung+/Member app and re-added themselves into the beta. It was trivial, and now they’re guaranteed a spot.

  • S8 on T-Mo here, I’m not seeing it yet either. I’ll keep an eye out though. Thanks, Kellen!
