Samsung and LG Also Say They Don’t Throttle Old Phone Performance Like Apple

Yesterday, Motorola and HTC told us that they aren’t throttling old phone performance like Apple was caught doing to the iPhone 6, 6s and 7. Today, Samsung and LG said similar things in statements to Phone Arena.

LG was a bit more enthusiastic in its statement, saying, “Never have, never will! We care what our customers think.” OK, then. Samsung was a bit more collected, noting that they use software tricks to adjust battery charging current and duration, but that they “do not reduce CPU performance through software updates over the lifecycles” of phones.

Here is Samsung’s full statement:

Samsung Electronics Co.,LTD.: Product quality has been and will always be Samsung Mobile’s top priority. We ensure extended battery life of Samsung mobile devices through multi-layer safety measures, which include software algorithms that govern the battery charging current and charging duration. We do not reduce CPU performance through software updates over the lifecycles of the phone.

So that’s four of the big dogs weighing in with confirmation that they don’t downgrade the performance of older phones in the way that Apple did because of aging batteries. Now we just need to hear from Google.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • While OEMs do not slow down their phones, the applications installed are getting updated for more modern devices in mind. That consequently puts excessive load on older devices. Together with deteriorating battery you have slow phone with very poor battery life.
Plus newer phones are updated with more efficient Android updates. So yeah, OEM do not need to slow down their phones.

    • A lot of things can slow devices over time just with what users do and put on their phones alone but atleast Androids aren’t being secretly slowed down on purpose for nefarious reasons like Apple has done.

  • Tbh I’ve never experienced it any Pixel or Nexus devices in my times with them. In fact, I remember major updates actually improving older phones like the Nexus 6P back in the day. I’d be surprised if they were like “Um, yeah, we done do that too.” Either way, the whole situation is shady af with Apple. Like, really? Your OS can’t withstand future updates without needing to sacrifice performance over stability? REALLY?

    • and then god forbid they dont update the older phones and become fragmented..AHHH the HORROR lmao

  • Lol no one else upgrades all of their devices at one time. We are forgotten as soon as the new version comes out. Shut up BIG 4

    • Pixel for fast updates and fast/smooth performance, other OEMs for hardware choice and more features. Contrary to Apple propaganda choice is a good thing.

      • I’m not an Apple fan and I will never own one, but they do keep their devices updated. Will the first pixel still get updates 4 years from today?

        • In iOS number old iPhones are updated but not necessarily in including the features which makes the update a joke. Along with throttling included in those updates they are hardly anything to brag about !

The Pixels are well supported, they will see atleast 4 major OS versions over 4 years with security patches continuing on afterwards. They get the latest features and no throttling is included in said updates. This is better than what Apple does imo.

          • Bottom line is all ios devices get something at the same time. Android is too scattered between companies and their phones. And as for the Pixel. It shouldn’t be hard to update anyway. It’s too plain for me. Vanilla is not my flavor.

I’ll stick with LG for now. At least I can use my headphones and charge at the same time.

          • That’s the beauty of Android. If you don’t value fast iphone like updates then you can buy something other than the Pixel. That you willfully chose and apparently prefer a poorly and/or slowly supported brand so that you can complain about it later is on you.

After all, the only way to get updates out to all Android phones at once would be to force OEMs to make only stock/”vanilla” Android phones and you don’t like that “flavour” of Android. Maybe you should be complaining to LG and tell them to make their own LG sourced OS so that their customizations to stock Android no longer slow the update process for you?

          • I’m going to always complain because there is no perfect phone, but I would still prefer LG V series over anything else at the moment. The positives outweighs the negatives. I have played with the pixel and it seems ok. Waaaay overpriced though and the no headphone jack pretty much closed the door for me.

iphone has a ways to go to win me over. I love it for my boys though. I have full control of everything.

  • Imagine all the people who got screwed over by Apple because they thought they had to upgrade their phone instead of replacing a $79 battery.

  • LG doesn’t need to throttle performance
The bootloop problem LG G4, LG V10, LG Nexus 5x
LG UI skin that is cluttery

As for Samsung touchwiz aside (Doesn’t the note 8 have newer, better Samsung experience version compared to the S8)
the Snapdragon 820 and 835 [845] both processors designed with help from Samsung are energy efficent
The clock speed of the Snapdragon 835 on Samsung flagship devices leaves much to be desired
With the Samsung Galaxy S8 plus having relatively the same battery as the earlier S7 battery capacity (compare the Moto Z to the Moto Z2)
Software updates aside the oem’s are full of it
Oh and keep looking at qualcomm processors the 62x series especially to see an exxample

    • Not sure what you’re trying to say here. After a year or less, iPhones are slower than Snapdragon processors because of their heavy throttling. It doesn’t matter how powerful the processor is in the beginning, if it’s slower than other phones after less than a year.

    • Bringing up phones that are 2(almost 3) generations old. Lol. Nice try!

LG’s skin is fine. No worse than Samsung anyways.

        • Was taking about the lg phones you brought up in the first paragraph. Bootloop was still a relatively small issue on those anyways.

The second paragraph? Yeah, I dont even really know what you were saying there. Was a pretty big incoherent mess.

      • So true. I just said the same thing on this thread. Apparently there are still some bitter people with buyers remorse. Their old LG purchase from two to three years ago continues to haunt them.

    • This regurgitation of LG’s old bootloop problem is like beating a dead horse. Bootloops occured on the LG 4, V10 and Nexus. These were isolated incidents. Several of LG’s budget and midrange phones never suffered from this issue. Constantly complaining about an old issue that happened a few years ago is silly. It’s like the guy who had a bad experience with an old Ford pickup truck and now claims that all Ford pickup trucks are unreliable. LG has moved on to better things and their quality control has greatly improved. They make great phones and there is plenty people on this forum that are quite happy with their LG purchase.

    • That’s a “feature”. LG is so proud of their boot animation that they think their customers should see it over and over and over and over! 😀
