Verizon Adds Mexico and Canada Usage to Go Unlimited Plan

On January 25, Verizon will add a new feature to its Go Unlimited data plan: usage in Mexico and Canada. This addition brings it in line in terms of features with the upper-tier Beyond Unlimited plan, though there are some things to be aware of.

When the Go Unlimited plan picks up Mexico and Canada usage, that means no cost to use talk, text, and data when in Mexico or Canada (as well as unlimited calling from the US to both countries). However, there is a 500MB per day cap for 4G LTE speeds on data, though data will continue to work at 2G speeds thereafter.

Verizon tells us that the change is for both new and existing customers.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • The biggest problem with this plan is the ongoing costs to Verizon will be similar to that with T-Mobile. If you recall, T-Mobile had an ‘ad campaign’ with a rateplan feature called “Mobile Without Borders”. Mobile Without Borders features provided unlimited calling while traveling in Mexico. It was a part of an MVNO service sale agreement with Telcel and Carlos Slim.

Essentially, this ad campaign and complex deal structure allowed T-Mobile to advertise unlimited service in Mexico and Canada as a limited-time promotion during a time when AT&T was investing in tangible assets, bought Nextel Mexico, and converted the network technology to scalable LTE service across Central America. T-Mobile negotiated a wholesale agreement at a per-minute rate. Which is great for creating short-term ad campaigns.

Because AT&T is the only company with a network which it owns and manages in-house that provides coverage across Central America and Mexico, I expect Verizon to need to introduce caps or reduce usage amounts just like T-Mobile did when roaming agreements need re-newal and rates needed re-negotiation. Verizon will probably inform its customers about billing system updates to their plan via a facebook wall post or other inexpensive delivery options such as SMS text messages or robocalls similar to what T-Mobile had to do.

    • The Unlimited data plan introduced last February you are referring to already includes Canada Mexico!
