Wouldn’t you know, there apparently really was a bootloop issue with LG devices. According to a settlement website ran by Girard Gibbs LLP, LG has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit for buyers of affected LG devices, which includes the G4, G5 V10, V20, and Nexus 5X.
For those who weren’t following this issue, there’s a Wiki here, but to sum it up, people were buying LG phones that consistently bootlooped and a class action lawsuit was filed in March, 2017 in regards to how the company handled the hardware issue.
As for what LG is offering in the settlement, affected owners can select either a $425 cash settlement or a $700 rebate towards the purchase of a new LG device. With $700, you can basically get any LG phone you want, or just take the cash and put it towards any other phone. The decision will be yours.
If you purchased one of the aforementioned devices and never took action, it looks as though you can still get in on this settlement, which is great news. To get started, fill out the below Proof of Claim survey by February 12, 2018. Of course, you’ll need your proof of purchase and any other evidence you can provide to prove you owned one of these devices and purchased it through an official channel. Beyond that, you won’t be needed to stand in front of a judge or anything. It will all be handled by email, according to the Girard Gibbs website.
UPDATE: The Proof of Claim survey is currently closed, likely because it had many people attempting to fill it out. I would wait a while and check back, or contact Girard Gibbs LLP directly through its website here.
UPDATE 2/1: The law firm has pulled the original sites that were linked to in this story. We aren’t sure why, but maybe they weren’t exactly ready to present all of the info just yet. We’ll do our best to keep you updated on the situation as it unfolds.
UPDATE 2/1 #2: The law firm’s website now clearly states, “There is no class action settlement.” Instead of any type of monetary compensation, it only says LG will provide an extended warranty for the bootloop defect for 30 months from the date of purchase. Beyond that, they say contact LG for any issues and if LG doesn’t address your complaint, contact the law firm.
Congrats, LG owners, you did it.
This really pisses me off, I’ve been in on the LG class action suit from the beginning, signed my documents after they finally settled to get the $425 and find out that is not happening. So customers get fucked again by big business and of across the law firm that represented us are Judas Iscariot, who got more then 30 pieces of silver to do that. They suck, LG sucks. The whole suit was a big waste of time.
I contacted LG & they promptly sent me a shipping label for my bricked Nexus 5x. Less than a week later I have a fully functional phone with repair listed as “replaced CCA.” I’m impressed.
I got a response today from the law firm.. this is it…
******************
Thank you for inquiring about the LG Bootloop Lawsuit. There is no class action settlement. We filed a class action on behalf of LG phone buyers, but the claims were compelled to individual arbitration by order of the federal court in Los Angeles.
After the Court compelled our case to arbitration, we agreed to represent a number of individuals who contacted our firm in arbitrations against LG. Those individuals signed agreements to retain us and provided us with documents and information to support their claims.
We do not have a signed retainer from you in our records. While we are not accepting new clients at this point, we recommend that you contact LG directly at 800-243-0000 or http://www.lg.com/us/support. LG has agreed to extend the warranty as to the bootloop defect to 30 months from the date of purchase.
If LG refuses to address your concerns, please let us know.
I got the same response when I called them and talked to Natalie just now.
Initiated a warranty claim with LG for my 5x. They sent me a shipping label so we’ll see what happens. If they wind up saying “sorry, no deal” and charging me the $20 inspection fee it’ll go back to being a paperweight.
LG is the only brand I haven’t had boot loop issues with. My Nexus 5, my Nexus 5X and my Pixel 2 XL and never had a boot loop issue. I guess I’ve just been lucky?
Both my Nexus One and Galaxy S2 had boot loop issues.
LMAO It went from “$425 cash settlement or a $700 rebate towards the purchase of a new LG device” to “30 months more warranty coverage”.
I’m sure this will REALLY keep LG customers from changing brands now.
NO MORE LG PRODUCTS FOR ME!
Just got off the phone with LG and unless you have the phone forget getting anything. I tossed both of mine after they died and were out of coverage. Who would keep them for paper weights? So really they are only at risk for those that are still working which at this point you would think don’t have the bootloop issue anyway. It is really a fake remedy for LG to offer since most of the phones that died are gone and they wont “repair” unless you can send in a phone. LG if you are reading this I have an LG TV, DVD, and an entire new kitchen. Those will be my LAST LG products. I even offered to provide proof of purchase to a supervisor and they said no. Oh and get ready to wait on hold for 30 minutes.
Well this is F’n BS.
so this post on their blog says there is not class action settlement and that the agreement was to extend the warranty to 30 months from purchase. What’s the real story? https://girardgibbs.wixsite.com/lgarbitration/single-post/2018/02/01/LG-Bootloop-Litigation
It seems hard to me that extending warranty to 30 months got misunderstood to $425 award or $700 to a new LG phone
I registered both my G4 and wife’s v10 devices with LG. You would think that a law firm would get that list of registerred devices and send out notifications. Pretty ticked off as I went through 2 G4’s (replacement lasted 7 days before bootloop, and then had the replacement G5 camera not focus issue which forced me to purchase a new phone).
Edit: and both phones I also completed paperwork for 2nd battery promotions as well as a free 200gb memory card with the V10. Should have had no problem being notified
Great. I never got notified, either.
Password please
I was never informed of this lawsuit as an owner of 5 different 5Xs and and LG G4 and LG G5.
If the G3 was included in this (The OG bootloop champ) I would be all over it. Haven’t owned LG since that bc the bootloop and hot battery turned me off from the brand
Please update or put up a new article as soon as new info is released on this
This is bullshiiiiiiiiit. I had 2 G4s with TMo that bootlooped. On one of them (mine) I actually sent it to LG for repair. I remember as I sent it the week before 4th of July in 2016, and they delivered it the day after. Only reason it took so long was the holiday. I never got anything in the mail.
My whole family had G4’s purchased on Swappa that had this issue that worked fine for the first few months we owned them. They were ticking time bombs. Two of them were repaired by LG (even out of warranty) and still had issues afterward. A V10 purchased directly from T-Mobile also had the issue. I swore off LG at that point. A few people in my office bought the 5X when it came out and one by one, each of them had a bootloop issue with them. I was a Nexus guy for years, but when Google abandoned wireless charging, I had to bail. After trying a few other phones, I’ve settled on the Note5 and one by one have moved my family over to Samsung. Sure, you have to use Nova to get rid of the GUI, but other than that, they’ve been stellar. No glitches (don’t ask me about the Motorolas we had either), great screens. Only complaint I have is battery life. Three years ago if you had told me I’d be a Samsung convert, I’d have laughed in your face.
But they’re #1 for a reason. They just seem to work. Not something LG can say. What a shame.
BS. I have a G6 thay I bought during the memorial day sale. Bootlooped during a Verizon update and store wouldn’t fix due to it being purchased from Best buy. LG took the phone no charge and restored it, their customer service was amazing, but with no explanation why it bootlooped. Loved my G4 and G6 but steer clear
G6 wasnt part of the law suit. G5, G6, v10, v20, and nexus 5x.
Currently the Claim Survey is asking for a “Proof of Claim Password”
Let’s see if we can find the password
What happens to the money that’s left over after all the claims are paid? Do the attorneys get what’s left? No wonder they nuked the registration site…
Agree. It is not fair that not everyone with the affected devices can submit the claim.
Call and leave a complaint that they did not widely publisize the class action. Note the time you left the call. Send an email. Do the same for LG. Im trying to track down the Judge who oversaw the settlement on the Class Action. Bombard his Chambers (office) with email and phone calls advising that LG did not appropriately notify potential class members, and has now closed off the settlement. With any luck the Judge can invalidate the settlement (or threaten to) and cause this firm to open it back up.
Keep me informed on this. I would like to help.
That’s the point it wasn’t a class action lawsuit, which blows even more because there are many who have a graveyard drawer of these devices. The problem is so wide spread that everyone who still has these devices should be allowed to send them in…
Agreed. I had two G4’s and a V10 that had the issue. The G4’s were purchased off Swappa, so they’re not eligible, but the V10 certainly would be as it was purchased from T-Mobile. I wonder why I was not alerted to the lawsuit in the first place?
Argh, I have 3 G4s that all died that my family was using. Hopefully I can still get in somehow. I still have receipts for everything. Bleh
Same. Phonearena has the direct number, I will call them tomorrow. I can’t remember if I got something in the mail for it, I believe I did, and filled out something online too, but it was so long ago.
I just called and spoke to Natalie Attar at the lawfirm and she said if I didn’t docusign forms a few months ago to retain the law firms services, then it us unfortunately to late to join in on the lawsuit.
I managed to fill out the survey for our two V10s when the news first went live this afternoon – I happen to have all of the necessary documentation handy because my phone *just* returned after a bootloop repair, and I had my wife’s e-mails as well. Any idea if I’ll be able to take advantage of this? It’d be nice to be able to move on from this phone…
Same here. Filled out the survey for a G4 and G5 right before the entire site went tits up. Fingers crossed
Are there any working links for this.. The link provided is dead
I know, I have two bootlooped 5X’s at home
Well crap ???? link is dead
I got the email on this today and am taking the $425 and not toughing an LG product. Had to esign a few forms. This has been going on for a while and I am glad I did the work to get the $ as that phone sucked..it really needed more ram and removable storage…oh, and to not fail.
Were you previously in contact with their customer service about it? I have two bootlooped 5X’s at home and am afraid that I’m out of luck. 🙁
yea, I think you had to sign up by a certain time, this has been going on for close to a year or more. I am honestly surprised there is such a nice settlement. I thought maybe a benny or less.
This has to be an extra bitter pill for you
What about the Nexus 6P bootloops, wasn’t there a lawsuit for that too?
Nope….
there should be ????
Batteries failing I would agree with. But I don’t remember any boot loop issues.
Yeah! Had a brain fart. It was the batteries. I just remember seeing red, it was so frustrating.
Google gave me a refurb even though my device was out of warranty.
The same law firm is also litigating the Nexus 6P bootloops. Better hurry and get in on that one before it’s too late
https://www.girardgibbs.com/nexus-6p-bootloop/
Not litigating they are investigating to see if they have enough proof to sue.
Google replaced my broham’s 6p with a 128GB Pixel XL; no (additional) cost out-of-pocket. That was late last summer. It’s worth a try!
all the links are DEAD….
Bang bang
“This survey is currently closed. Please contact the author of this survey for further assistance.”
Can someone provide a live link please? I have two bootlooped 5X’s sitting at home.
pretty sure you had to sign up months ago.
Says survey closed….shit.
I know, I have two bootlooped 5X’s at home
I’m seeing the same. Wanted to get a replacement for my mom’s Nexus 5x.
Amazing
