HTC U12 Apparently Shown Off During 5G Industry Event

HTC was present at a 5G Industry Alliance event on January 29. At that event, the company showed off a device that is now being reported to be the upcoming U12. While we do have photos from the event, confirming that a mystery phone was indeed on display, HTC did well of covering up anything of value that we could learn from seeing it.

From these photos, we can take away that this reported U12 has on-screen buttons, a healthy amount of top and bottom bezel, and at one point somewhere in the world it had access to a download speed of 809Mbps and nearly 50Mbps up. We assume those speeds are from a 5G network, but it’s safe to say that’s not the focus of this post.

The photos may not be a treasure trove of information on the device, but it is something.

U12 5G event

We are not expecting to see much from HTC later this month at MWC, but as we reported, that comes as no surprise. HTC has been sticking close to home lately, holding press events and product unveilings from Taiwan. We assume the same will be said for this year, too.

Thoughts on the U12? Are you excited for HTC’s 2018?

Tim

Stumbling upon Droid Life randomly after purchasing a Motorola DROID in late 2009, then setting out to learn everything he could about Android, Tim quickly became an integral part of the site's comment section. After quite some time of strictly commenting on Droid Life, Tim was offered an opportunity to write feature stories for the site, such as custom ROM overviews, as well as interviews with Android community members. Following success of those, Tim became a full time writer and editor for Droid Life, now spending his time on news articles, device reviews, producing videos, and much more. Tim currently resides in Portland, OR with his longtime girlfriend and two wonderful dog children (Loki & Thor). In his spare time, Tim enjoys playing guitar, drinking coffee, practicing photography, and destroying kids on Call of Duty.

  • I’m sure I’ll get hammered here but its all good. Honestly I just don’t get this push to 5G. In reality we have no need for speeds like that still for the average consumer. On top of that the carriers will spend a boat load of $$ to build a network that isn’t needed currently. How about they spend time, effort & money on getting the darn 4G LTE network running as the speeds ppl expected and they sold us on. We get no where near the down & up speeds they like pushing in sales ads & commercials. Hello LTE Advanced, for something that is suppose to get up to 300 Mbps I don’t think I’ve ever even seen it top 100Mbps
