Almost a year ago today, Google announced its new vision for Hangouts. It would break Hangouts apart into two apps – Meet and Chat – while adding advanced features to them. Meet was available pretty quickly to most, but Hangouts Chat has only been in beta or as a part of an Early Access Program. Today, Hangouts Chat leaves that EAP and will be available to all G Suite users as a core application.
What’s different about Hangouts Chat? While we have yet to use it (don’t worry, we will use it soon), you’ll see a fair amount of people compare it to Slack. Hangouts Chat is Google’s take on the modern project management, group messaging application. You can chat with everyone in your organization, make groups, and that sort of thing, of course, but the app includes integrations from other apps too. You’ll be able to work with Drive applications easily within chats, there are bots in chats to help you set meetings and find files, and companies like Kayak, Vonage, Uberconference, Freshdesk, and others have all setup shop within Chat.
In order to get Hangouts Chat, you’ll need your G Suite admin to turn it on for everyone. Once that happens, you can hit up the link below to install Android, iOS, and desktop apps.
Google says that it should be available to everyone over the next 7 days.

Can’t they EVER get anything right?
I’m so lost as to what googles strategy is for messaging.
I remember how happy I was back when they allowed Hangouts to handle both SMS and MMS, so I could use it as my only text messaging application. It was great! And then…
This is getting ridiculous.
Android Messages, Allo, Duo, Hangouts, Hangouts Chat.
Android Pay is Google Pay now, not to be confused with Google Pay Send, wich is the old Google Wallet.
This is why people use iPhones.
You forgot Hangouts Meet. Tried the Hangouts Chat app. For being in early access for over a year, you’d think it’s be polished up. It’s rubbish. Bland white UI. No navigation pull out drawer. Can’t switch accounts. No settings. Clunky and barely usable. Literally whipped up by one of their Jr. Interns in less than 30 min.
good to see that nexus 5 love…
so wait – what happens to the hangouts I’m still currently using in favor of the other stupid ones they tried to make people move to?
Nothing happens. That’s the irony of all of this. The once big dream of merging everything into a stable platform is gone. They prefer to separate things out. The more apps the better.
I finally see the light. This is not just another failed Google messaging app (though the name sure does make you think that — my gosh Google). This is another ecosystem entirely. Wow okay I’d like to try it. But wait a minute wtphreek, I have to install a local Windows software application?!
You need to have a G Suite account. https://chat.google.com is the web client in addition to the mobile apps. You want to use it a native Windows app: https://get.google.com/chat/
Oh wow okay so there’s a web client, Windows app, and mobile apps. At any rate, it looks like Google wasn’t quite able to get it launch ready in time for MWC. I’m not able to add it yet in the admin console for either of my G Suite accounts. Guess I’ll give Google another week before trying again…
I doubt they were wanting it ready for MWC.
Amazing
