LG is Taking Software Updates Seriously Now, Opens Software Upgrade Center

LG just made a pretty big announcement surrounding the future of software updates as they relate to their smartphone business. The Korean electronics giant opened the doors to a new Software Upgrade Center that’s purpose is to deliver “faster, timelier, smartphone operating system and software updates” worldwide.

LG says that they are investing “significant” resources into this Software Upgrade Center, which will develop and deliver regular OS updates to their smartphones. Not only that, but this facility will ensure a “consistent user experience on LG devices by continuously testing the stability and compatibility between hardware and software after updates.”

This new Software Upgrade Center will try to roll out OS updates at a faster rate in the countries where they sell phones, so that should mean not only in Korea, but in the US too. The first update out of this new facility will be the Android Oreo update for the LG G6 in Korea, followed by additional markets.

Ummm, yeah, this seems like huge news, especially if you were looking forward to May’s unveiling of the LG G7 ThinQ.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • As long as they continue to produce phones with displays that remind me of the term “train wreck”, who really cares what they do with their software.

  • I know it’s anathema on DL but I just can’t get too excited one way or another anymore about updates…my TMO S9 got Oreo maybe three weeks ago now, and my life has changed about zero percent. Check that, just my phone experience has changed about 0.01%, it’s just not noticeable any more. If I were 3+ major upgrades behind then OK, maybe I’d feel the pain. But all the releases are pretty darn good now, it’s really just not much of a thing anymore. And trust me, it’s nice not worrying about it any longer.

    • um, the s9 launched with oreo.

while I have a very low bar set for OS updates from any major OEM, I do expect security updates monthly, which is kind of a big deal that even that level of updating is not happening from any of the major companies.

  • HAHAHAHAH! LOL! As a V30 owner on T-Mobile, let me tell you. LG does not care about software updates at all (and neither does T-mobile).

  • What’s the difference between “faster” and “timelier” in this context?

  • Whatever… I don’t trust any Android OEM. They’re all garbage when it comes to device support.

  • So LG are now effectively trolling their customers now with announcements like this, as we all know that these are empty promises from a manufacturer that cares nothing for its customers.

  • I wonder if they’ll actually update the software on their phones or just change the version number in the settings. Seems that’s something they like to do with security patches.

    • Same. Workaround is to buy a 6,400mAh battery from Gorilla Gadgets. That’s what I did. Not the answer you’re looking for but it does help tremendously.

        • That’s a good point. I generally don’t use cases so I will say I spaced and didn’t even think about that when I made my comment. Is there room in your wallet case for a regular size spare battery?

  • ….anyone really going to go g7….by the time it rolls out in later june or july, we ll all be thinking Pixel 3.

  • sounds like what every manufacture claims they do already… including LG. isn’t this list of things what we already expected every manufacture to do?

  • Had to recheck the date of the announcement. Thought it was an April Fool’s Joke at first…

    • yep. Got mine in Nov 2016….not sure its going to make it 2 full years. Loved all my lg flip phones, and my g2. I dont hate the G5…but battery drains ridiculously quickly. Random restarts (no boot loop yet).

      • Same here… Do you think the G5 will see 8.0? Where do you buy your batteries? I’ve found the batteries I have purchased have been fakes.

        • I have 2, got a spare and a battery charging cradle when i got the phone (part of the deal, along with the useless photo add on i cant be bothered with). Mine are OEM. Im not going to buy anymore batteries. Im going to switch over to Project Fi, im just waiting for my phone to die before upgrading. I dont like the idea of upgrading earlier than 2 years. Upgrading, bah, its buying a new phone. Without any discount from big red for a new phone there is no point to being tied to a contract. Im on a tangent, but this is my month testing how much data i use when i bother putting my phone on wifi (never felt the need with unlimited data)…trying to gauge what a typical month will look like using data to see if Project Fi is worth the savings.

  • After they failed to release Nougat for the LG G4 and all the bootloop fiasco, I learned my lesson and went with Samsung. I honestly do not miss my G4. When (if) they decide to make good hardware and software I might be back, but I will seriously think about it.

    • IIRC, they promised Nougat for the G4 & V10. Then they said it was going to remain on Marshmallow. Then they changed tunes again and said Nougat WAS coming for both. The G4 still ended up not getting updated and the V10 only saw Nougat in some overseas markets and domestically from T-Mo. I got a V20 in late 2016 but after Samsung finally got their act together & got back on track with the S8, I gave up on LG and am not looking back. My wife is on her 2nd G5 and that is it forn us as far as LG handsets. They still make nice appliances and TVs, however.

  • So instead of releasing a new phone every year, they’re going to get hardcore about making their software lean and always updated so that it keeps up for two years. I can definitely get behind this.

Originally I thought this was dumb because I have a V30 and I’m still on 7.1 and I’m just irritated but maybe that also means they’ll keep my V30 updated longer. With the rerelease of the V30 maybe they’re looking to keep VERY similar hardware updated for longer periods of time.

  • does anyone really think this is going to change anything in the us market… Samsung has the most android market share and wont boss the carriers around why would anyone think lowly LG could do better?

    • Maybe LG will bypass them and offer some kind of beta program that you can flash from LG Bridge or something like that. That’d be dope.

  • We’ve heard this refrain over and over again by each manufacturer in turn.

At this point, the burden of proof is on them and I will not and can not trust any of them until their whole device portfolio goes through 2 years of major OS updates and 3 years of monthly security updates.

So, see you in three years LG. If you keep your promises, I may consider one of your handsets in the future.

    • haha I remmember HTC was talking about taking updates seriously like 2 years ago. Nothing changed

  • LG’s lackluster update situation pushed me away from their devices. Looking forward to seeing how this changes things, especially when it comes to rolling out Android P.
