May’s Android Security Update Goes Live for Nexus, Pixel Devices

Google just dropped the May 2018 security patch for Nexus and Pixel devices on us. If that seems odd to you knowing that Android P Developer Preview 2 is probably coming tomorrow, try not to stress. Google (almost) always drops each month’s security patch on the first Monday of the month and that happens to be today, the day before Google I/O. Also, a bunch of people won’t jump on the Android P DP2 (which will probably be a beta and open to all), so those still on stable Android Oreo need those latest patches.

At this time, we already have both factory image and OTA files, so choose whichever works best for you if you don’t feel like waiting for the update to show up on your device.

So far, we are seeing new 8.1.0 files for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL (OPM2.171019.029.B1, OPM4.171019.016.B1), Pixel and Pixel XL (OPM4.171019.016.B1), Nexus 6P (OPM2.171019.029.A1), Nexus 5X (OPM4.171019.016.A1), and Pixel C (OPM4.171019.016.C1)

Google’s phones are getting the May 5 security patch level.

Update notes:

  • For the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, Google has now updated the notes to show that build 8.1.0 OPM4.171019.016.B1 is for “Fi Carriers.”
  • The Nexus 6P May build has been pulled too.

You can grab each image or OTA file at the links below. For instructions on how to flash a factory image, here you go. For instructions on how to flash an OTA .zip file, here you go.

As more files arrive as well as additional details, we’ll update this post.

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I have a 2xl on T-Mobile it is Monday 14 and there’s no update can somebody tell me why?

  • Battery life is even worse now on the 5X. Be aware. It dropped 2% while just typing this MESSAGE… WTF?

  • For the 4th month in a row the monthly update has once again hurt battery life. Things as simple as browsing and Facebook over wifi is not draining the battery at almost 20%/hr. That’s DOUBLE the battery drain compared to the first few months of owning the phone.

  • Here we are on the unlocked Samsung S9+, and still on the fracking February security patch. I will NOT be purchasing another Samsung device.

  • Downloading now. A fix for the battery life issues caused by the February, March and April updates would be nice but I really hope the May update doesn’t make battery life even worse.

    • I need this update to finally fix the swiping issue that was supposedly fixed in the April update.

      • are you talking about how swiping away notifications on the lockscreen is really difficult? If so I’m having that problem too, just updated to the may security patch and still having the issue.

  • “Check Update” button just worked on my Pixel 2 XL and Nexus 6P…

  • There’s 2 May builds for Pixel 2 XL. OPM2 and OPM4. Anyone know the difference?

    • for April’s update, OPM4 was “Telus and Koodo Only”, so I’d imagine that’s the case for May as well. I’m not 100% sure but it does look that way.

  • Out of curiosity has anyone ever gotten the check for update button to work? Mine has never worked.

        • The last few months, yes. However, it doesn’t seem to be working for me this month, as the OTA update is already going out.

          Curse you, Google! ????

    • It works. The problem is that when Google makes these items live on the website it doesn’t automatically make it available to download(OTA)…. which is ridiculous if you ask me.

It’ll be live within the next 2 hours.

    • The check for update button finally worked for me on the day the April 5th update was announced, but so far it isn’t working for the May 5th one today.

    • Mine works on the Pixel 2 XL.
I hope they fix the stuff they broke with the February security patch. Last month’s patch was suppose to fix it but didn’t for me.

    • Nope, never, not once ever has it worked on release day. I’ve had a Nexus/Pixel phone since Nexus 5.

    • My phone is unlocked, so I never bother with the update button. I just download the image and run with it.

    • Mine worked with the last update, but that was the only time in recent memory that it has.

It may also have something to do with the dev preview. There have been times where I didn’t get the security patch, but it was included in the OS update.

  • worth noting those that want to use DP2 tomorrow probably shouldn’t download this security update as it may cause conflicts of install, possibly?

    • It won’t have any affect on people who want to go from stock Oreo with the May security patch, to Android P DP2.

      • What if the build date of DP2 is older than the May security patch update? I thought I recalled this happening each beta.

        • Factory Image flash will still work fine and DP2 will be available as a factory image.

      • So if I install this May security update, then tomorrow I want to install the DP2 Android P beta, there won’t be any issues? Guess it’ll bump us back to the April security patch??

        • For the most part, yes. There is a chance DP2 might include the May patch, but most likely it won’t.

      • Typical for this time of year I’ve thinking about trying different phones(xz2 or u12)…but then the beta comes …and that’s that.

        • I know… I have a P20 coming on Thursday but I’m sure it’ll collect dust once I’m busy with DP2 on my P2XL.

      • Pretty sure he knows that. Just excited.

I can’t help being excited about it either, though I know it’ll most likely come with another round of “OMG!! White!! Gah!!” BS.

  • I can’t wait to see what’s announced during tomorrow’s IO keynote!
